About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- praguemcgraws0 contributionsLeave the driving to Valley Isle and enjoy the Road to HanaThe whole day was amazing! Our guide was entertaining and informational. The views were great and the experience at the black sand beach and swimming in the waterfall were quite memorable -- though the waterfall water was freezing in February! We even got a surprise final stop at a beach to see tons of sea turtles basking in the afternoon sun. A full day that was well worth it. Highly recommend. We considered driving the Road to Hana ourselves, but this tour was much more relaxing than looking for parking at every stop!Written February 18, 2025
- peggyh350 contributionsBook with this group! Our guide, Joe, made the trip fun and stress-free. Not only expertly handling the curves and other drivers, but he’s full of knowledge about flora, fauna, history, food, and culture. Totally worth the price.Written February 13, 2025
- OnAir343698139710 contributionsWhat a great day on the Road to Hana! The Road to Hana was an amazing tour. So glad we had Paula to do the driving. She was awesome and very knowledgeable. So much more to see when you're not driving. Paula went beyond our expectations and made sure we didn't miss a thing. I highly recommend this tour. You won't be disappointed.Written February 12, 2025
- K9003ZYanthonym0 contributionsHighly recommend“Uncle” Joe was a terrific tour guide. He was so knowledgeable and accommodating. This was a special tour and a must do if you have the time. The views were spectacular, one more beautiful than the next. We highly recommend this road to Hana tour.Written February 6, 2025

- Mary16750 contributionsExcellent TourWe tend to drive ourselves on trips such as this, but opted to let a pro do the driving on the road to Hana excursion. We had a great time and felt the trade offs of cost and loss of flexibility were well worth the benefits of the tour. Our guide, Joe, shared a wealth of knowledge about Hawaii past and present. It was fantastic even thought it rained off and on throughout the day.Written January 30, 2025
- DFamilyOf40 contributionsGreat morning - it can be coldIt was an early morning with a small group but a great experience. // Billie positioned us in the very best protected area and provided us with insulated capes which were definitely needed to protect us from the cold wind. On the drive down, he shared information on the spectacular views. // Tips for others - assume it is windy and cold (30-40 F). Bring winter-ish clothing - warm gloves, toque, winter (or puffy) coat, heavy socks, consider thin long underwear.Written January 28, 2025
- msu_mom0 contributionsGreat tour!We had a great time on our tour. Daniel was our guide and he was knowledgeable and funny. It was great to see everything without having to drive.Written January 28, 2025
- IowaCityMD0 contributionsLots of funGreat guide in Charleston with interesting commentary all the way. Great scenic stops. Road in much better shape than when I did it in 2008. Now if they could just take out some of those curves!Written January 27, 2025
- Vinayakbs0 contributionsGreat TripI took this trip on the last day of 2024 and it was worth doing. Narrow road to Hana was beautiful full of dense forest and habitat. Mountains, forest and ocean makes the drive wonderful and great experience. It is almost 12 hours tour but at the end you will not regret it. Our guide Daniel was excellent with commentary and information.Written January 27, 2025
- DFamilyOf40 contributionsGreat trip!Wonderful day! It was great to be able to walk off the ship and be met . Daniel (as I expect most of the drivers are) was superb - knowledgeable, friendly, helpful, and most of all, careful driving. Thanks!Written January 26, 2025
- gwatki0 contributionsIf you’re considering a self guided tour, don’t. Do this instead! We had considered doing a self guided interior ourselves since we already had a Jeep rented. We both agreed that we were glad that we did this tour instead.! They have everything time perfectly so that you can pack as much in to the day as possible. The guide was very friendly and informative. We highly recommend this tour and would do it again in a heartbeat! Thank you for a great time!Written January 23, 2025

IMPORTANT: If you are going to watch the Sunrise from Haleakalā you need to use Valley Isle Excursions!!!
My wife and I came to Maui for our 5 year anniversary and this excursion was one that we were both dreading and excited about. Dreading because we had to be awake at 2am to get picked up but excited to see the sunrise from the top of the island. Well the Valley Isle crew took all that dread away! When we got on the bus they made everything comfortable so that we could all sleep during the long drive to the mountain top. Not only did they make sure we were all comfortable, but they made sure we were one of the first groups on the top so we would be right up front and not stuck behind anyone during the sunrise. It really is an amazing experience and I highly recommend it!
Be sure to wear layers because it is COLD at the top but warm at breakfast. We made the mistake not wearing layers.

This tour was absolutely amazing! It was a once in a lifetime experience. Bill and Bryan were our tour guide. They were knowledgeable, engaging quite funny. They knew exactly where to put us, the time to get us there, and provided us with protective wind gear that was essential on the cold mountain top. the skywas starlit, we saw a shooting star, from the black starlit skies to the gorgeous beautiful sunrise was like a religious experience. These guys were the best. Must thing to do on the island of Maui.

Alika was our tour guide for this trip, and he was very knowledgeable about the land, the cultures, and the history of Hawaii. He was a pleasure to have as our tour guide. He was friendly, entertaining, and considerate.
The sunrise on top the mountain was beautiful. It was also very cold, and I thought I had come prepared with my sweatshirt, but the wind cuts through clothes very easily. The tour provided some very nice ponchos to keep us warm, which was welcomed. Alika also offered us ginger candies and water since the roads were very curvy and could make you sick.
After visiting the mountain and on our way back down, Alika offered to stop at a “secret spot”, which was a nice, cute pit stop that involved listening to the menehune and Alika’s take of the Hawaiian folklore.
The breakfast was nice at a very nice restaurant on a farm. It was a very nice area with nice ambience, and the restaurant was empty as I think they only serve breakfast for tours. The only issue is the restaurant was all the way back in West Maui, and that time I was starving. It would have been nice to have the tour offer some snacks, since you have to be up so early to get to the mountain top.
Another small issue was the AC in the van. There is no control for individual seats to adjust their air flow, so those in the front of the bus get a lot of cool air and those in the back get way less. It would have been more comfortable to have each seat have better AC control.
Overall this was an enjoyable experience, and I would recommend everyone experience a Mt Haleakalā sunrise at least once on their trip.

Aloha!
Mahalo for touring with us and for taking the time to share this helpful feedback. Yes, the breakfast location is a bit of a length away. I will share the concern with management and hopefully we can consider including a snack post-sunrise to help hold everyone over on the way back down the mountain. Take care!

Surprisingly, probably not worth getting up at 02:00 am for. The sunrise was spectacular but lasted maybe 90 seconds, with over 90 minutes waiting in the cold and dark in a group of maybe 500. We knew it would be cold and had dressed appropriately but did not anticipate the sheer wind force and wind chill. One of our party had to stay in the van due to the sheer wind force. The tour company did all that could reasonably be expected, no criticism of them.

Mahalo for sharing your feedback. We’re glad to hear the sunrise itself was spectacular, but we understand that the wait in the cold and wind can be challenging. We do our best to prepare guests for the elements, but the weather can sometimes be unpredictable and intense, especially at such high elevations. Your experience is valuable, and we appreciate your honest perspective. We hope that despite the conditions, you still took home some beautiful memories from your time at Haleakalā. Mahalo for joining us!

On time departure, engaging guides, bathroom stops, handy hooded blankets for warmth at the top, a clear night with a full moon, arrival at top with time to relax a take pix while waiting at top. Best surprise was Spenser, one of our drivers sang a beautiful and moving version of the sunrise welcome chant to the sunrise with a park ranger !! AWESOME!!!
We stopped for breakfast at Maui Tropical Plantation and then dropped off back at the car.
Great trip, great guides - Spencer and Guillermo, moving singing.
Bus does need suspension overhaul!!

Our guide, Spencer, was nothing short of awesome! When you’re being picked up at 2am from a hotel and driving up a mountain of switchbacks, he took extra time to take each turn slowly so we could sleep. Spencer also shared every planned bathroom stop, ETAs, sunrise time and made this a very relaxing trip. We got the best, unimpeded view of the sunrise, hearing the chant as the sun was welcomed. Spencer brought us to a great photo op overlooking the valley isle, stopped to show us silverswords, and got us to breakfast and back to the hotels right on time. I would highly recommend this experience, and they mean business when they say dress warm! The ponchos they provide were a lifesaver😊

Aloha KatieW3935MX,
Your experience with Spencer sounds absolutely incredible! It's clear he went above and beyond to ensure your comfort and enjoyment throughout the journey. From the early morning pick-up to navigating the mountain switchbacks with care, Spencer's attention to detail and consideration made the trip incredibly relaxing. The unimpeded view of the sunrise, complete with the traditional chant, must have been a truly magical moment. It's wonderful to hear that Spencer made sure you didn't miss out on any photo opportunities or fascinating sights along the way. And yes, dressing warmly is key, but it's great to hear that the ponchos provided by the company were a lifesaver! Thank you for sharing your unforgettable experience, and we can't wait to welcome you back for more amazing adventures in the future!

We went the morning of 5/2/23 on the first full day of our honeymoon trip. Highly recommend laying into your jetlag and taking advantage of a 2 am pickup not feeling that bad. Our tour guide Guillermo was excellent. Gave plenty of audio and history while also plenty of time to nap and rest on the bus. The sunrise was BEAUTIFUL. Couldn’t have asked for better. The breakfast after was also delicious. Great group and great team. Took all the work out of seeing the sunrise for us. Remember to dress warm! They give out insulated ponchos but below 40 degrees and windy standing around for an hour gets chilly.

Billy was an amazing tour guide. He ensured we got the best spot to watch the sunrise. The windproof ponchos kept us warm and cozy while we stargazed and waited for the beautiful colours of the sunrise. Breakfast was delicious and we were back in time to enjoy the rest of the day at the beach. Would recommend anyone going to Maui does not miss out on this magic experience. Thank you again Billy.

This was a great sunrise tour, even though we had to get up really early! Our guide Alika was outstanding, and gave us great information and also let us nap some on the way up to the summit. The native Hawaiian chant he did as the sun rose over the crater was a great experience. It's cold and they supply parkas, but they're really just capes with zippers, so bring plenty of warm clothes and gloves. Outstanding experience, and would definitely recommend.

Great tour. Our guide, Alika, was very knowledgeable, funny, friendly, and sensitive to the needs of the people on the tour. Weather is a big factor as to what the actual sunrise looks like. We got lucky there. The tour cost was comparable to similar tours and was well worth it. Rock star parking spot in each of the lots where we stopped.

I don't understand how you can select a time for this tour, given that there are hotel pickups and the whole point is to see the sunrise? What is the difference in the tour if you pick 2 AM vs 3:30 AM, etc.?
Written October 14, 2019
The early ones are to see the actual sunrise. The later ones are if you just want to go up to the crater without worrying about the sunrise.

Hey, I think, reaching the Haleakala Crater needs a bit of Hike. How do you plan to accommodate that as a part of the tour? Do you guys take everyone or once you take everyone to a point it is up to individuals if they want to hike? Thanks.
Written September 29, 2019
The tour takes you to the parking lot and then there is just a short walk to the lookout. Some people went higher, but I believe you technically need a permit to hike, but it is possible. We were there about 1.5-2 and then were taken to other spots in the National Park.
