The Highway to Hana is infamous for its sharp curves, sudden rain showers, and yearly death toll. It is also jokingly called "Divorce Road" for the amount of couples who dare to traverse it without a guided tour. Do not be those people! A guided tour is really the only way to see this road safely, plus it's the funnest way to see the road! For $200 it is well worth your time, patience, and safety to take a tour, and I would solely recommend Valley Isle Excursions for this job.

Our day started by being picked up from our hotel which was incredibly convenient as we did not have a rental car on Maui. We then were taken to a gorgeous breakfast overlooking an old plantation. Following breakfast, we began our tour with Travis. Side note, ask for Travis as your tour guide. He is a Maui native and was absolutely fantastic, he really made the trip! Once we met Travis, we boarded the 12 seater bus with only 6 in our group due to COVID precautions. Then we were off!

Our first stop was at Auntie Sally's Banana Bread stand. Travis will tell you to buy two loaves of banana bread as they as fresh and warm from the oven. You should follow his suggestion. We only bought one and immediately regretted it! There are no bathrooms there but a bathroom stop is quickly up the road and also serves to take pictures along the coast. Then you proceed on the actual road to Hana, with a wonderful narrative by Travis about the history of everything you are seeing including plant names/varieties and waterfalls. Be warned, Travis will make you sing "Waterfaaaaalllllllll" as you pass each one LOL.

We also stopped at a road side place for another bathroom break and the opportunity to buy souvenirs. Our lunch stop is actually Travis's Aunt's house located in Hana, Travis's hometown. You eat a light lunch and have the opportunity to buy some jewelry the Aunt made with materials around her property. This is also where you will change into your bathing suits because after lunch we stop at one of Maui's famous black sand beaches. Travis knows the route well so our group had over an hour at the beach (which also has bathrooms). From the beach we went to a lagoon with a waterfall. Since we hit the waterfall on the way back, it was far less crowded and everyone in our group had an opportunity to swim in the lagoon.

On our way back we had one last stop at Travis's Cousin's road side stand where you can get some seriously good shaved ice and ice cream! After that stop, there are no more bathroom breaks and the tour is almost over. All in all it is about a 10 hour day. There are plenty of stops to eat, go to the bathroom, and take pictures. I would only ever do this tour again with this company and Travis. Thank you both for an unforgettable experience!

Good Afternoon, Thank you for choosing Valley Isle Excursions for your Road to Hana tour and for writing such a wonderful review. Travis is an amazing tour guide. Once you go out on tour with him you become family as you can tell. Travis being from Hana is very knowledgeable in the history, the road and the plant life. I will make sure to pass along your very kind words to Travis as well. Thank you, Autumm Director of Sales

I booked this tour a year ago before our trip was cancelled due to COVID. The company was very flexible, rescheduling twice without an additional fee. From a customer service standpoint I would give them more than 5 stars if I could. As far as food goes, breakfast was at the Mill House and was good for us since we don't need anything heavy in the morning, but if you need a heavy breakfast you may want to bring something additional since it's only fruit and pastries. Lunch was subpar for me - I ordered the chicken Caesar salad and the chicken was kind of sketchy so I ended up eating lettuce. Anyone who ordered the turkey sandwich seemed happy though so would recommend choosing a different option than the salad. But we stopped at places in the morning and afternoon for banana bread and ice cream, so it more than made up for that. For the tour - We had Glenn as our guide and he is just full of stories and legends and all sorts of information. I learned so much about Hawaiian culture just from listening to him. He is a safe driver which is a MUST for this road - I have to say while on the road I have never been happier to not be driving. I would recommend to anyone to book a tour rather than try to navigate yourself. If you get a good tour guide like Glenn he knew exactly the best places to stop but was willing to accommodate any differences in interests or special requests. We stopped at the rainbow trees, multiple waterfalls, state parks etc. There are opportunities to swim if you would like but we opted not to.

Good Afternoon, Thank you for choosing Valley Isle Excursions for your Road to Hana tour and leaving such a great review. With COVID bringing so many changes that are out of our control the least we can do is try to accommodate any cancellations and reschedules without any extra fees to our customers. The Mill House is a new location for our continental breakfast and they also prepare our lunches. We keep the breakfast light which is recommended before hitting the 618 switchback turns. Due to COVID we had to change our lunch menu as we were no longer able to offer our buffet style lunch. I will pass along your concerns with the chicken salad to upper management and the Mill House. Glenn is a wonderful guide. He is supper patient and very knowledgeable as well. I will pass along your kind words to him to. Again thank you for your wonder review and we hope to see you again in the future. Thank you, Autumn Director of Sales

Our driver picked us up at the scheduled time and was extremely knowledgeable, friendly and entertaining. The bus was comfortable with 4 empty seats and only 3 other couples. Breakfast was delicious and served in a very attractive outside restaurant with beautiful gardens. Our driver “Andre” ( he has a beautiful Hawaiian name that I can’t recall), entertained us with his extensive knowledge of the island history and plants growing along the road, interspersed with jokes. Bathroom stops were frequent and sightseeing stops were always in safe places ( unlike some of the individual drivers we encountered along the way). I highly recommend this tour rather than trying to drive this oneself, it is a very dangerous, winding road and would be exhausting for the driver. A beautiful drive in pleasant company.

Good Afternoon, Thank you for choosing Valley Isle Excursions for your Road to Hana tour and taking the time to write your review! Our Breakfast location is at Maui Tropical Plantation and they have some of the most beautiful grounds on the Island of Maui. I often spend my free time there. Andre or Mana (Hawaiian name) is very knowledgeable and he loves sharing his Hawaiian culture and history with is guest on tour. You are correct in saying the road can be dangerous. With 618 turns and 51 one lane bridges its best to go on tour with an experienced driver. This allow a stress free day to enjoy the beauty of Hana! I will pass along your kind words to Mana and we hope to see you again in the future! Thank you, Autumn Crisp Director of Sales

We were assigned a guide who has been in Maui for about 3 years, by his own admission, not a local with expert experience and knowledge of Hana as advertised. There was no cultural perspective. Information and dialogue about Hana was extremely lacking. Our guide spent the day pointing out the same 2 or 3 types of plants over and over again as the bulk of his narrative. All guests wore masks during pick up process. After the breakfast and back on the bus, masks were off. Not mandatory, we were told we could make our own decisions. I kept mine on. This was early December, beginning of Omicron.
After our lunch, where at least 4 vans of people were together, guides announced it was time to put bathing suits on for swimming at Black Sand Beach. There were two tiny bathrooms for all the people who needed to change and/or use facilities, leading to congestion and wasted time. At Black Sand Beach, there were larger bathrooms suitable for changing. However, the beach access was closed due to rough surf, so swimming was not possible. Not Valley Isle's fault for sure, but as excursion experts would they not know this before arrival?
The road to Hana is a very long day. It is great not having to do they actual driving, to relax and look out the window. When using the services of a tour you need to consider the realities. You will spend much time during pick-up, drop off process, stopping for bathroom stops you may not need, sitting shoulder to shoulder with people who are not required to wear a mask. Some parts of the day which should run with a little more planned efficiency are somewhat unorganized. Although promised, you may not get a guide who is an expert, or who is at all informative. And it is not inexpensive. This was my Hana experience with Valley Isle.

Aloha EnzoX2 Thank you for sharing. Your feedback is helpful and valued. There are some things we will look into and work to improve to avoid future experiences like this. Masks should be worn while on the cruiser. We will remind all of our guides to enforce this policy. I will inquire if there are ways to be notified by state park officials if and when they close beach access at Waianapanapa. Generally, our guides are pretty great at running very time-efficient tours and in sharing unique insights of both local and native culture. I am not sure who your guide was but do know that we do provide our guides with continuous training, learning and professional development opportunities. Mahalo again for choosing Valley Isle Excursions and taking the time to share your experience. We are always working to improve in our abilities to deliver great memorable Maui experiences with our guests. Malama Pono - Stacy

AMAZINGGGGGG! My girlfriends and I all loved the road to Hana trip! We had Joe as our tour guide and we loved him! He picked us up ON TIME, and the whole time he entertained us with so many interesting stories and facts about the island and every time we passed by something he would tell us about it. Before booking the tour, I was contemplating driving the road to Hana myself but omg I’m so so so so glad I booked the tour. That drive would’ve been impossible for me. It was so tight and nerve racking. But wow Joe drove it effortlessly. He always was so calm and relaxed. His voice was relaxing. He was so nice! If you are wondering if you should do the road to Hana; this is your sign to DO IT! It is truly beautiful, Mother Nature in all her glory is captured on this tour. And if you think you should drive it yourself, I would honestly say don’t because you’ll be so focused on driving the windey road (full of twists and turns), so you won’t be able to really enjoy and focus on the beauty all around you. You can also request for your tour guide so ask for JOE! He won’t disappoint! We were able to get aunt Sandy’s Hawaiian bread, and swim in waterfalls, and visit the famous black sand beach. All in all, we are so happy we did the road to Hana with valley isle excursions and Joe was our tour guide!! Thank you for an amazing time!

Just wanted to thank Travis (Ikaika) for an excellent tour. I’ve done the Road to Hana before on our own and this was WAY better. Travis immediately knew everyone’s name on our tour which made it so personable and enjoyable. It was entertaining and interesting the entire time, not one dull moment. Since he is a local who grew up in Hana, you get the benefit of his knowledge and comfort on the road. He shared so much about Hawaiian history, about the names and purposes of the plants/trees/flowers, we stopped at several beautiful and unique local stops for food and locally made goods, he pointed out every single waterfall (had us singing “waterfalllllllll” every time, which is still stuck in my head), taught us a “chant” in Hawaiian. This was what put it over the top for me - all the interesting information about the culture that I would have never learned had we done this on our own. Breakfast was at the very beautiful Maui Tropical Plantation (a very nice way to start the day), we stopped at a beautiful spot and had lunch outside and honored his aunt with the Hawaiian clap song he taught us, and he made a stop at a waterfall for people to swim in. He was also very, very funny and had me laughing many times throughout the trip. Thanks Ikaika for a memorable adventure that my mom and I will always remember. I showed my kids the video of you jumping into the waterfall and they were very impressed! Until next time….thanks again, Margie

On our first trip to Maui we wanted to see as much of the Island as possible. We decided to do the Road to Hana to see the sites and to see them safely. We decided to book a charted trip. The price was great and the company provide hotel pickup, breakfast, and lunch. Our driver, Travis, was very professional. He picked us up on time and drove very safely through town and gave us the history of the sugar cane plants and the other sites on our way to breakfast.

Breakfast at the Maui Tropical Plantation was amazing. The staff was great, the food was tasty, and the atmosphere was beautiful. The property was very well taken care of and so peaceful.

Once we left breakfast we continued on our trip to Hana. Just like on our way to breakfast, Travis, gave us the history of Maui and kept us entertained. One of our first stops was Aunty Sandy’s Banana bread. The bread was so tasty and hot out of the oven. It is made with Apple Bananas which gave it a very rich flavor. You have to stop and buy a couple of loaves on your trip.

We continued on the road and made several stops, and Travis pointed out the different trees we were seeing. He taught us the Hawaiian names for them as well. When we made it to Hana, Travis gave us a tour and shared the rich history of the beautiful town. We stopped and had lunch which was pretty tasty as well.

After lunch we went to black sands beach. The water was cold but felt amazing. There are caves, blow holes, and lava tubes to see. The only way to get access to this beach is with a permit, and by taking the charter, the permit is included.

On our way back, we stopped at the Kaumahina State Wayside park. This is a safe place to swim beneath a very beautiful waterfall. After a nice refreshing swim, we stopped and got some shaved ice at Half way to Hana store. Another spot you have to stop at.

Overall, this trip was great. Travis was great, the road was beautiful, and I would recommend this charter to anyone looking to see the Road to Hana.

This is an all-day tour which might seem interminable without a guide who keeps you engaged in your experience. Travis exceeded our expectations with his wit, knowledge and obvious pride in his homeland. The Road to Hana can be a harrowing driving experience, so we were grateful for his driving ability while keeping us entertained! We highly recommend this tour.

Highly recommend this tour, and if you could request “the local boy” you will have an amazing time. They are by far the best drivers around the road to Hana, and doing this tour will save you the stress of driving the whole way and back with all its twists and turns and one lane bridges. Lunch was provided however we made multiple stops along the way for food so we were never hungry (also definitely get Aunt Sandy’s banana bread and their kalua pork sandwich!). We also stopped at the most of the major points and had time for some beach time and waterfall swimming. Overall, I would recommend all my friends and family to go on this tour with Valley Isle Excursions!

Our Road to Hana trip with Kobi was amazing. Kobi was entertaining and informative and made us feel at ease with his masterful driving on the challenging, twisty road to Hana. We learned so many unique bits of information about the local culture as well as new trends and developments happening in Maui. The tour is perfect with the right number of scenic stops and restroom breaks. The lunch options were good too. Getting to buy some local banana bread and Huli Huli Chicken - very delicious. The small size of the group meant that everything ran on time and we got to know each other well which it made the experience more fun. Highly recommend Kobi and Valley Isle Excursions. Five stars all the way.
