About
I’m Don Burgess, a Frederick resident interested in sharing my passion for heritage tourism and historic preservation as they contribute to preserving and creating a city’s “Sense of Place.” I’ve been a history buff of this region for years, and my role on Facebook as Frederick Tour enables me to combine my love of things old with my skills with things new. I’m a semi-professional photographer who has photographed, shown, and sold images of Frederick, Harpers Ferry, and other regions. See more details about tour in itinerary below and at fredericktour.org We can give tours year round. If it is raining/snowing (light) and you still want to take the tour, we can do that. If it is raining/snowing (hard), we can do a virtual "tour" indoors (groups of 8 or less). Upon request, we can offer theme tours such as churches, architecture, or Civil War, or even photo shoots.

This was a wonderful walking tour that would be great for anyone who has an inkling of interest in the history of Frederick.!The tour guide, Don-is a genuinely friendly guy whose knowledge of Frederick can only be achieved by living there! His delivery of information is animated and unique. Even though I’m very familiar with Frederick, I learned a great deal. It was a quick 1.5 hours and an easy walking route! I recommend it to both locals as well as out-of-towners!

The guy is a long time resident and history/Civil War buff. Tons of stories. He’s even gone and got some pictures from a long time ago and as he walks you around the town he can show you buildings that are standing where the buildings you are looking at were and he can show you people standing in front of those buildings. This was pretty cool. Total distance walked is not a ton but well worth it. Anybody with reasonable fitness can do this tour. If you do the tour in the morning you should eat lunch at one of the local eateries and then go visit the Civil War Museum of medicine. That was cool too.

The guide combined the history of Frederick with the Frederick of today. He talked a lot about Civil War characters and we saw several churches, banks, city hall, and other buildings. The tour is rather long, and there is a lot of standing. He was sometimes difficult to understand. I feel that the tour would be better if it was 60-90 minutes, rather than 2 hours.

Don is a colorful storyteller with a sense of humor. His tour was intimate – like a (very knowledgeable) friend who takes you around their town and points out the cool bits, much of which you wouldn’t get from guide books and plaques. He integrates history, architecture, art, and contemporary life of Frederick. Don was super accommodating: I had a narrow window for the tour, and he made it happen with little advance notice (plus a generous, spontaneous tour by phone of Shepherdstown Battlefield from where I called him to set up the Frederick tour!).

The tour was great! Don was very knowledgeable about Frederick, both past and present, and we left with a new appreciation for the Historic District. I would definitely recommend this tour and spending a day in downtown Frederick. ***For dog lovers - Frederick is a very dog friendly town, and we took our pup with us on the tour and then had dinner at a restaurant that had outdoor seating.

I had the privilege of taking Don's tour as he was perfecting his stops. He was very informative and included photographs of the sites that really made each stop easier to understand the history. His knowledge extends beyond of Frederick into the surrounding area. Definitely worth the walk!

It was a great experience just because our guide Don Burgess was so professional, considerate and has a wealth of knowledge, combined with sense of humor. History of Frederick is very interesting and Don picks the best stories that never bores you. I'd strongly recommend this tour and especially with Don's guidance. He's the greatest guide I've ever seen as he has his own style which suits best with this historical lovely town.

Don was easy to listen to and easy to talk to. He was knowledgeable, interesting and fun. If your concerned about it being a lot of walking you shouldn’t be concerned. We stopped at many shady spots and places to sit down.

I'm a lifelong resident of Frederick and have always loved living here. I've followed "Frederick Tour" on Facebook for several years and have always enjoyed the photographs that Don posts. When I found out he was doing historical walking tours, I knew I had to go. I was very surprised by all of the history that I didn't know about my hometown. Don's tour was very informative and would appeal to all age groups. He makes learning history fun!!

Our tour guide was fantastic taking us through a 90-minute tour. What a charming town to see walking through and hearing details with our tour guide Don. He even gave us recommendations on some restaurants and places to hang out at night. We saw him at a local brewery and he was kind enough to walk us back to our Airbnb. It was a very safe place to visit at night and extremely clean. Very impressed. I will definitely come back to visit again.
