A great day
Aug 2021
Our pilot was Bill Starr. He is very knowledgeable and pleasant. We had a terrific day. We saw six bears, two from the air. An unexpected bonus: Lake Clark National Park is spectacularly beautiful. Another unexpected bonus: lunch on the beach was delightful. We also booked the Knik Glacier flight tour with Alaska Air Service; our pilot was Kari, and we had another fantastic experience. A first rate operation!

Tour of a lifetime
Jul 2021
This was truly a trip of a lifetime. To view a significant number of adult, juvenile and baby bears in the wild was well worth the price. In addition, the two hours of flying (an hour each way) provided sight-seeing opportunities that are hard to describe.
The pilot/guide (Abbee Campbell) was a highly skilled pilot (instructor rated) in addition to being an excellent and experienced guide. She was very safety-oriented and made us feel very comfortable. Beach landings and take-offs can be tricky and she handled them with no difficulty.
Our tour was for four people which made the experience all the more meaningful. Oh yes, the company also provided a great box lunch (gourmet-quality) which we ate at Lake Clark.
All-in-all, this was a great excursion.
I would highly recommend Alaska Air Service for their Lake Clark NP bear viewing trips.

Almost missed bear viewing
Jul 2021
We booked for a bear viewing airplane excursion to Clark National Park in March for the trip in July. One hour before departure at 8am we got a text message saying trip was canceled due to bad weather. We talked to the Alaska air to consider other options but they said cannot fly.
Fortunately, we could go with another service and the weather was very pleasant in Clark National Park area that day (2-July-2021).
Perhaps Alaska air was over booked or changed their plans suddenly.
Either way be careful when you choose Alaska air service.

Sir, we understood your frustration on the day of travel. Although certainly a let down that your tour was cancelled, we make no apologies for placing SAFETY as our number one priority. Our next criteria is quality of experience. Your review wording states we 'cannot fly' when, in fact, we had chosen NOT to fly. In our 30 years of safe (and accident free) flying in Alaska we have learned to not push weather and "try it". Unfortunately other companies will attempt flights, under pressure such as yours, and we believe take undo risks. Our encouragement for all travelers using our fabulous network of air charter companies is to do research on safety records and interact with the owners and pilots prior to making a decision. You'll find Alaska Air Service gets high marks and five stars.

Bucket list experience!
Jun 2021
We arrived at the airfield pretty nervous for our flight in a small plane to see the bears . Within the first 10minutes of our flight we were totally at ease and loved every minute of the flight there and back. Jordan is a great pilot and shared alot of information about the area and its history. Our time at Lake Clark National Park was incredible! We had multiple bear sightings and learnt all about the bears and their habitat from Jordan. The packed lunch was delicious and we even sat and had lunch watching a bear have his! We have recommended Alaska Air Service, Jordan and this trip as we continued our travels through Alaska and will continue to do so in the future.

Thanks so much for your 5 star review and excellent description of your day. Jordan does a great job getting you safely up close and personal to this great State and its incredible views. The bears generally cooperate but it does take that special attention to get those great interactions. We are pleased you had a trip of a lifetime! Thanks for flying with us.

Bear watching
Jun 2021
bill and his son piloted us to Lake Clark National Park and Preserve. Beautiful scenery. We landed on the beach to view bears in the meadows. There were bears everywhere. There was a mother and 2 cubs in the far meadow which we saw with some binoculars. They provided a nice upscale deli lunch which we ate on the beach. The bears were not aggressive and didn't care that we were there. Most bears were eating the grasses. A few bears were aggressive with each other over territories. There were 6 of us so we split our party and took 2 planes. Very steady flying. Did not get nauseas.

Best part of our trip!
Jul 2019 • Couples
First off let me tell you, I was very nervous about flying on this smaller plane and landing on a beach. All that worrying for nothing. Stephanie our guide/ pilot was wonderful. Very knowledgeable about the area, history of the area, and more importantly the bears. Stephanie made sure everything was perfect and it absolutely was. We got to watch several bears and some of them had Cubs with them. My wife took some amazing photos. Part way through a lunch was provided and it actually was good. We sat on the beach by the plane and ate lunch while a large bear behind us dug for clams. Highly recommend this trip. Some walking involved. I'm a big guy with bad knees and did not have any trouble. Let me warn you though the horse flies are huge and vicious. I wore bug spray and didn't get bit too much.

Even more excellent than we hoped for!
Bill is the quintessential outdoorsman and guide. He truly loves Alaska and genuinely enjoys sharing his knowledge, appreciation, and respect for the land and animals with his guests - which is just how we felt: his guests.

The bears were awesome and the scenery sublime. No roads go here. No man walks here. The experience was worth every penny.

Our day was simply fabulous, and we will treasure these memories forever. Thank you again, Bill.
