What a great tour, special thanks to Dale, our guide.
Dale is super knowledable about just about everything we tossed at him.
He was also very attentive and patient with straying people. {There is always one or two.}

Thanks for the kind review. We feel lucky to have Dale on our team. I appreciate our mention of straying people. We emphasize safety on our tours and we always start with a bear safety talk. One of the points we emphasize is that bears generally avoid groups of people and so wandering off on your own is not recommended.

Our guide was Dena and from the moment we met her I knew I was in good hands. She made the time about what I wanted to photograph and once I gave her an idea of what I was looking for, she knew where to go. She was friendly, knowledgeable and offered suggestions of things to photograph at each stop. Because we were the only people on the tour that day we were able to get a personalized experience and that helped me capture some amazing images from the area.

Rachel, our tour guide, made this tour memorable. Great photography tips and overview of the basics. She was friendly and attended to everyone needs.. We went off the usual tourist areas and I appreciated that. I would recommend that tour to everyone even if you are not a photographer!

I had the pleasure of learning how to photograph wildlife and the Haines landscapes.
Kim Clune provided excellent guidance on how to capture flying eagles, looking beyond the obvious, to look all around and capture the beauty of nature.
I left being a more proficient photographer. She provided a great tour of the island providing the history and character of Haines. I highly recommend this tour and make sure you ask for Kim to be your guide. You will enjoy every minute.

Thanks for your kind review. Anna is new with RGA this summer. She arrived here with lots of knowledge about camera systems and photography. In addition, she has taken the time to study the natural history and history of the area. She enthusiastically shares her knowledge and we feel lucky to have her on our team.

This was such an enjoyable experience! We booked this excursion through TripAdvisor as a day excursion from our Royal Caribbean cruise aboard the Quantum of the Seas, May 19, 2022. We were met by our guide, Paul, at the dock in Skagway and boarded the beautiful 45 minute ferry ride to Haines. Even the ferry trip was a fun, picturesque experience. We then loaded the van in Haines and departed for our full day of natural beauty and photography. Paul was great and really tailored the day to us. At the beginning of the day, he asked if there was anything in particular we’d like to photograph. We replied, without high expectations, that we’d love to see brown bears, knowing that we were likely too early in the season. Paul replied, “probably not going to see bears today, but you never know”. Imagine our thrill when we saw two brown bears along the river’s edge! We were really lucky as the forecast was for chances of rain, but we had really nice weather. We saw surf scoters, brown bear, bald eagles and really stunning scenery! Great experience and would do it again in a heartbeat!

Thanks for your kind review. Our photography tours to Haines are special because we only offer private departures. I'm glad you enjoyed your time with Paul. Paul one of our most experienced and knowledgeable photography guide. He knows both Haines and Skagway well. We are always careful to manage expectations for our tours so I understand why Paul told you that the odds were low for seeing bear. The odds get better as the summer goes on and the salmon runs get stronger. We typically have better odds beginning in August. But bear are always around in the Chilkat Valley and there is always a chance you might see one on any of our tours. I'm so glad that you lucked out and bear in May! We hope you come to see us again.

Rachael took a small group of enthusiastic photographers on a tour around Skagway. We were given individual attention and lessons as required. The subject matter was varied and interesting. A great way to spend a few hours and increase ones knowledge. Loved it.😊😊

I was hoping to learn about my camera and photography as the information that I had promised - 'you don't have to know anything about your camera'. I bought my camera just for this cruise to Alaska. I was hoping to learn the proper settings of my camera for a particular shot. Luckily I went to Youtube about a week before this excursion to get some idea going in.
I'm not sure how an individual gets proper instruction when there are several people on the excursion and the instructor doesn't have time to deal with folks one on one. I wrote to Joe about my experience with Dana and the information I did not receive about my camera. I gave my input on how to improve things, so now I'm leaving the review. If you're looking to learn more about your camera and proper settings for a particular shot, then this is not what you're looking for. At least that was my experience with Dana. You'd be better served by referencing Youtube. This review is based on the fact that we were told we would learn about our cameras, but did not receive that instruction.

Thanks for your comments. We take all comments seriously and are always looking for ways to improve. I appreciate the opportunity to respond. The guide on this tour, Dana Sohm, has received numerous five-star reviews for his photography tours this summer. So I was a bit surprised by your comments and asked Dana to respond. Dana told me that on this day the tour went to Dyea; he explained that because of the salmon run on the Taiya river he thought there would be opportunities to photograph bald eagles. Dana’s comments follow in quotes. “I usually start right off explaining how to spot eagles (golf balls trees or on stumps of driftwood). I usually suggest that my guests get out their longest telephoto lenses and hold them on their laps to be ready because eagle sightings can be fleeting. I usually relate how to photography flying eagles and how my early attempts were blurry due to choosing too slow a shutter speed. So I recommend setting cameras to shutter priority with a shutter speed of 1/2,000 sec. I recommend auto ISO so photos don't come out too dark. I also recommend hand-holding (no tripod) and mention my early mistake of trying to get my tripod out of the trunk only to find the eagle had already flown. I usually summarize these settings one more time, i.e., longest lens, shutter priority, 1/2000 sec, auto ISO, camera on lap ready to go. I've usually finished these instructions by the time we exit long bay and enter the Tayia River estuary where I tell guests that this is where eagles are usually found. When we spot an eagle, we pull over at the earliest safe place, and everyone, usually with great excitement, does their best to get eagle photos. I try to take a look at guests' photos and encourage them to share with each other. Eagle photography doesn't really lend itself to more specific discussion about settings. I have already suggested a shutter and ISO setting, The camera chooses a corresponding aperture, which is usually wide-open, which is appropriate for the subject.” I would also like for anyone reading this review to know that your review lists the tour as “Private Photography tour to Haines-Skagway departure.” That is not the tour that you participated in. You participated in our Skagway photography tour sold onboard a variety of cruise lines. This is a group tour (11 guests max). While we only run small group photography tours in both Haines and Skagway, there is a qualitative difference in the amount of personalized attention you get on a private tour vs. a group tour. The private tour is more expensive. I am sorry that you feel that you did not learn about your camera on this tour.

After reading all the great reviews and researching the company's website, we booked this tour independently rather than choosing one of the overpriced excursion options on our cruise. I'm so glad we did! As a professional photographer back at home, I was not sure what to expect on this private tour, however our guide Cindy Schultz did not disappoint and made this one of the most memorable travel experiences I've ever had. She knew all the best spots to photograph in beautiful Haines and shared her expertise and guidance without being overtly instructive. My non-photographer husband joined us and I was a little worried he might be bored but Cindy had the initiative to bring her telescope and include him in the many wildlife spotting opportunities which was really thoughtful. The highlight of my entire week in Alaska was spotting a beautiful 4-year-old grizzly bear, just across from the river as we passed in the car. We backed up slowly and I had the once in a lifetime opportunity to shoot many images and this was such a fantastic experience (see attached). Thank you so much, I will highly recommend your tours to all of our Australian friends and family who ever visit Alaska!!

Thanks for your kind review. Our goal is to offer the best photography tour in Alaska, so its great to hear you say that we accomplished our goal. Cindy Schultz is an expert photographer and guide and we really enjoy her positive energy on our staff. I'm so glad that you mentioned that the tour was a success for both you, a professional photographer, and your husband, a "non-photographer." We often have inquiries about whether the tour will be interesting for non-photographers. It turns out that most everyone enjoys the tour because of the pace. So many other tours make quick stops...in and out of the bus for a photo, and then back to driving around. Because of the nature of photography, you have to take time to slow down and get to know the location and the subject of the photograph, Even if you are not taking pictures, the tour gives you a chance to slow down, breath in the fresh Alaskan air, and enjoy some incredible scenery. Of course, seeing a brown bear in the wild is always a thrill, and we've had some great bear sightings already this year.
