Booked this tour on our own (not through cruise ship) as they offer SOOO much more and for very reasonable prices! Originally found them back in late 2019 when we were first supposed to cruise to AK in 2020. Based on their overwhelming great reviews and communication/handling of cancellations with all of the changes the past few years, there was no doubt we would stick with them when finally cruising in 2022.

Always heard great things about the scenery in the Yukon so went with this tour, even though it no longer included the train ride for 20222. Our guide Mike was a wealth of information and really catered the stops on the tour to the group we had. We followed the beginning path of the Klondike Gold Rush up through Fraser, British Columbia and ending at Emerald Lake/Carcross, Yukon. Pretty crazy stories to hear as well!

BEAUTIFUL country up there that used to be covered in glaciers. Saw lots of mountains, waterfalls, fault lines (cool and creepy), tundra, lakes, desert and my personal favorite…a bear cub. Didn’t find its mom but we’re sure she was close by. Emerald Lake literally looks like something right of the "Wizard of Oz".

Lunch was BBQ at an outpost near Carcross and actually very good. Especially their homemade donuts! The stop was more than enough time and included a museum, wildlife displays, gift shop and dog sled puppies (and cart rides if you wanted).

We took their 8:30 AM tour and were back in downtown Skagway by 3:00 PM, even with all the stops Mike made for us. Gave us more than enough time for exploring the town on our own, taking the Brothel tour and shopping.

Can't recommend Chilkoot Charters enough! And the process of getting into Canada...easy peesy!!! We timed it and with 15 tourists and 1 guide on the bus, the Canadian border agent literally was on the bus 14 seconds to check passports. ArriveCan paperwork wasn't even looked at since we all were from a cruise ship and that was done prior to embarkation.

Although we were unable to take our booked tour due to our cruise ship not making it into Skagway, I wanted to submit a review. The staff were very accommodating as we booked our tour by phone before the cruise. They answered all our questions and provided detailed information. They even added a tour date for our group of five and only required a $5 deposit! When the ship cancelled the port of call, Frontier Excursions quickly sent an email letting us know they were aware of the change and had refunded our deposit - we didn’t need to do anything! We took a tour four years ago with Frontier Excursions and enjoyed it very much. Wish we could have done a tour again. Highly recommend this company for touring in Skagway! Barb

This tour took us way beyond the borders of Alaska and up into the Yukon Territory. Our tour guide, Mike, was extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of the Gold Rush era, With only a small number on the tour, we were able to ask whatever we wanted to know. On top of if all, we were able to (for a small additional fee) experience a dog sled ride and a tour of a facility that raises dogs for the sledding. Lots of pups to see. Once in a lifetime trip.

We took this 3 hour train ride up the mountain and back. It was educational and entertaining. It was a great way to relax and see how it was done back then. Great tour for any age. You are on the train the entire tour. Bring drinks and snacks.

This was an EXCELLENT tour. Our tour guide, Tyler, was lively, extremely knowledgeable, personable and funny.

The #1 reason I chose this tour over the White Pass railroad were the number of reviews that lamented the fact that you couldn’t get out at all. This tour goes along the highway right next to the White Pass railroad route AND BEYOND. (We could actually SEE the train as we went).

We had a climate-controlled minibus with only 21 people. Compare that with the NCL Pearl excursions that were considerably more expensive and left in mega-buses that were 100-200 people deep each.

The drive out to the Yukon was absolutely gorgeous. You pass through Alaska (stopping to take photos at the Welcome to Alaska sign), British Columbia and the Yukon (also taking photos at the sign). We were able to stop and get out to take photos at various locations. We saw mountain goat as well as an eagle (extremely close to the road) and raven.

We went everywhere as described. In addition, though I didn’t take the sled dog ride (as it was on a wheeled vehicle instead of a sled due to the lack of snow) I was able to pet the puppies. In addition, we stopped and drank some glacier run off water from Bridal falls (only 3 of us dared) and stopped at the actual Carcross town (as we had extra time) and got our passports stamped.

I would advise that at Caribou Crossing (where the dog sled adventure and lunch is) that you go to the Taxidermy museum and exit through the rear door. There you can pet and (for only $1 a bag) feed a pure black stallion, mini-horses, donkey, alpaca and/or goats.

Highly recommend if 1 person. Also recommend if you’re paying for more than 1 and are not a driver, don’t like to drive or simply prefer a narrated tour. However, if I had to pay for more than just myself, I probably would have opted to rent a car instead (about $150 or so out the door). That way would could go where you want the whole time (and as most of the route is off the highway, it would be a no brainer to go to these sites on one’s own…and beyond) Please keep in mind if you’re a woman alone or traveling only with children that Alaska is the sexual assault capital of America with reported rape rates around 3 times the national average and child sexual assault rates at 6 times the national average.

Thanks so much for your detailed review. We agree that Tyler is lively, knowledgeable personable and funny and that is why he is an amazing guide and employee to work with as he take so much pride in his work. Many of our groups are made up of couples or smaller groups who are looking to do a fun adventure with a nice guide into the beautiful wilderness and by gathering like minded travelers we can all go out and have a great time. We are so glad you decided to join us in Skagway as we sincerely appreciate your support. Best in your travels and thanks again for your generous review.

Mike is the best tour guide whom I have ever met. I took the tour last May in Skagway to Yukon . He was funny, knowledgeable and professional. We saw bears, Emerald lake, White Pass and so many beautiful scenery. On the way back to Skaqway,Mike asked us questions about Alaska history and really widened our knowlege. He even took pictures for most of us. We had so much fun with Mike. You are the best, Mike!

Boarded a bus roughly 7:30 AM for the trip to Carcross, Yukon Territory, Canada.
Skagway itself looks like a town that time forgot. It really looked like an old western town from a movie scene. Surprisingly, despite their age, all the buildings appeared to be in good shape. You start at sea level and almost immediately begin a 3,000 foot ascent through a pass surrounded on both sides by beautiful terrain. Once you have made the ascent you can expect to see a seemingly endless display of lakes with water containing the most beautiful blues and greens you can imagine. The whole trip was unbelievably beautiful with an endless display of lakes, mountains, majestic waterfalls, sheer cliffs, deep cut valleys, and some wildlife. Our bus driver, Rhonda, was very accommodating and made numerous stops for pictures and if we happened upon wildlife. We saw a bald eagle, a black bear (which crossed right in front of our bus), and a cinnamon colored black bear and her two cubs. Our trip included a stop at a small museum and animal farm and the Yukon Suspension bridge.
Overall, I'm very happy that I took this excursion in general and happy that I took it as opposed to the train trip. The bus trip afforded us the ability to stop along the way, take photos, and shop in Carcross, which is something you will not get on the train.

The trip to the Yucon was amazing.....We actually wanted to take the train, but for time in port we had to take the bus....so glad we did. Tyler (T-Bone) our tour guide was excellent. He brought so much humor and life to the tour. We got to stop when we saw wildlife and the opportunity for great scenery photos. We wouldn't have been able to do that if we had taken the train. The tour went all the way to Emerald Lake which was incredibly beautiful. We also stopped in Caribou Crossing for a BBQ Chicken lunch, unlimited doughnuts. My son Jake broke the record for this year with eating 10 doughnuts...crazy...lol. We didn't get to take the sled ride because of the heat, but we got to pet the puppies anyway. We loved everything about this tour. Would highly recommend over the train....

Took this tour instead of booking one through the cruise ship. I'm so glad that I did!

After several cruises, I have learned that booking your own excursions before you get on the ship is better. The ship sponsored excursions are VERY disorganized and rushed. Look for a group that will guarantee your return to the ship before departure, and will cater to your ship's late arrival.

I took this tour with Mike and appx. 15 other "strangers". We all seemed like family by the end of the day. Mike set the tone by sharing a bit of himself and asking everyone where they were from. He was very personable, knowledgeable and informed about the area and the locals. Although a small town, Skagway has a lot of history, that Mike shared while we were on our way to our day's adventure.

Mike was very gracious in allowing us to stop for plenty of photo ops, and gently nudging us back to the bus when it was time to move on. He assisted this solo traveler in taking pictures at the landmarks, and generally made us feel like he was showing around friends and family. I don't like to drive when I travel, so I take lots of excursions, and this was the best one by far. :-)

On my next Alaskan cruise, I will definitely book with Frontier again.

This was 100% my parent's favorite part of our entire 7 day Alaska cruise on the Ovation of the Seas. Honesty my dad could not stop talking about it! We toured with Mike, who was honestly just amazing. Super funny, personable, engaged, he was really the reason that this trip was amazing. He was on point the entire time. Great sense of humor and extremely informative about the entire trip, but also had some funny jokes. He really knew how to invovle his passengers and it made the whole experience totally unforgettable. There was no possible way for us to have been bored on the drive because he did such a great job entertaining us. At one point he even had the passengers playing trivia together. Seeing all of the lakes and creeks was gorgeous. The suspension bridge was interesting, and the Carcross Desert was an unexpected, cute little stop. We loved Emerald lake was absolutely beautiful. It was awesome stopping at the Welcome to Alaska sign. On our trip, we were lucky enough to see mountain goat and three bears. At Caribou crossing, we enjoyed a simple lunch. I found the taxidemery museum to be awesome, and most of all I loved the petting zoo area. It was great to finally see sled dogs in real life. I really enjoyed feeding the goats, alpacas, donkeys and other wildlife. I would stay away from the horse if I were you - a little food agressive. Overall the entire trip was 100% worth the price and I feel like it was the best possible way that we could have spent our time while in Skagway port. I woud highly recommend not only the Frontier Company but also specificlaly Mike for all travelers coming to Skagway. Doing this tour is a memory I will never forget!
