About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- 242avac0 contributionsJust okay, try to find something more interestingOf the many excursions we’ve been on, this one was just okay. On a small bus with 20 other tourists. It was a rainy day so the windows fogged up. The driver put on the defrost that blasted freezing cold air at anyone who sat beside the window. (Me one of them) until the girl in front of me had enough and complained. They handed out paper towels so we could wipe the windows etc… So the stops were at a couple of waterfalls and a some viewing spots. Being from British Columbia, we’ve seen a lot of beautiful scenery like this already. The driver was just okay. His banter and information was the no-frill kind. I think we got spoiled at our last Private Excursion with such an animated guide and the interesting spots. Anyways, it was a ride to the Alaska sign and back, that’s about it. We took photos at the sign, but when we got back we all agreed, we should have found a Private Guide, they seem to put more effort into the tour. We had our passports ready at the order, but no one at the border crossing felt the need the check.Written September 26, 2024
- Liketachat0 contributionsTOUR GUIDE WAS TERRIBLEWe booked this tour through Princess Cruises. The Bus Driver's name was Gary. He did tell us his name but very little else. He was from Ohio and working in Skagway for the summer season. He drove us up the Klondike Hwy for a while and then turned around, with no explanation, and drove to and stopped at a Lookout. He didn't say how long we had there just let us off to roam. We overheard other drivers telling people all about Skagway and pointing out landmarks etc. We then were taken to the old cemetery. Dropped off and told to look for Frank Reid and 'Sophie" Smith's graves as they had killed each other in a gun battle. We all walked around aimlessly and only found the graves as we overheard another guide telling people the story of the gun battle and the guys nickname was "soapy". We then were driven back into town to go and watch the Days of '98 show. The driver warned all the men to sit up the back of the theatre as the show folk drag you up and dress you in silly outfits. We found the show quite entertaining for a amateur show. We got the story about Frank Reid and Soapy Smith which the Bus driver could have filled us in with. There would have been a lot more interaction from the audience if they weren't scared to say anything, thinking they would be taken up on stage and made a fool of. That was not the case and it was all a bit of fun. If that driver had told us about Skagway and pointed things out it would have been an interesting tour. I can't recommend this one. Walk into town and do the Days of '98 Show on your own.Written September 22, 2024
- pkienle0 contributionsGreat tripBeverly was our guide and she was great. We had time for photos at each of the stops. She explained local geology, interesting stories, and Alaskan culture. Pickup at the cruise port was easy and we had the option of being dropped off in town or back at the port.Written September 16, 2024
- LWplus40 contributionsGroup of 8We did this excursion the first week in September and had a great time. Lovely views and a comfortable coach ride. The driver/guide (Mike) had a great personality and was very informative. We chose this excursion because it went into the Yukon instead of stopping at the top of the pass like our train option. There was light rain and overcast on the Alaska side of the pass; but it did not stop us from having beautiful views of the scenery. We had better weather once we crossed over into Canada and the Yukon. I certainly recommend this excursion, with this company, to others.Written September 14, 2024
- J4210UVscottj0 contributionsGreat for the $The guide was wonderful, very informative, much more hands-on than the larger things like the train. Everything was great except the fog and clouds on top, which is not the fault of the tour.Written September 13, 2024
- PaulU5610 contributionsRecommended Day OutWe were picked up at the cruise terminal and taken on a small bus with 20 other guests. Mike was our driver and guide and he was entertaining and informative. We had plenty of photo stops and comfort breaks. The scenery was amazing and we also learned about the gold rush. The BBQ lunch was good too and we enjoyed the round trip of about 7 hours.Written September 5, 2024
- AAfly330 contributionsAwesome scenery &waterfallsChris and his crew were able to assist with my husband's scooter, which allowed us to get on the tour bus. Our tour guide was delightful and very knowledgeable about the area. We loved the walk to the waterfall near the cemetery (even though my husband stayed on the bus). The drive through pass to Canada was well worth the time and allowed for stops along the way to get great pictures.Written September 5, 2024

- Sachin G0 contributionsExcellent. TripExcellent trip, the weather played a bit with clouds and rain but that didn't dampen our spirits. We were 9 people (3 families) who were visiting on Princess Alaska cruise. Our driver Beverley Soja was amazing, She gave us a preview of Gold rush that happened in this region more than a century ago. She was knowledgeable and stopped at very beautiful views points. On the whole it was 2 hrs and 45 mins well spent.Written August 29, 2024
- KathrynS9620 contributionsGreat for a quick overview and intro to the city/area.I did two separate tours - one a minibus excursion to the summit and the other a city tour in a historic yellow bus. Both were great and since it was a perfect weather day, the sights were beautiful. Having been to Skagway before, I wanted something simple and scenic and these both fit the bill. First, the summit drive was driven/narrated by Haley and she was excellent. Very knowledgeable and personable and had been doing this for several years. There were several stops along the way for photo opportunities, including one at the summit to take photos at the Welcome to Alaska sign. She provided lots of information on living in Skagway and local life. The second tour on the historic bus was with Granger as the driver/narrator and he was also terrific. A young man studying medicine in AZ, this was his first season in Alaska and his flare for the dramatic makes him a perfect fit for the story telling he was doing - very entertaining. (I would suggest he study up on some of the 'facts' he was providing since for example, at one point he told us that a flight from Skagway to Juneau would cost one $25,000 and I questioned him on this since on the morning tour we'd discussed the same thing and learned it would be $250 which is much more reasonable. He said he thinks the morning narrator dropped a few zeros, but I've since checked and indeed, he was the one with the incorrect information. As a tour guide myself, I'd caution him to be mindful of knowing what he's talking about before he presents it as fact!)Written August 23, 2024

Of several Alaskan trips, we really enjoyed this one. We were lucky with both the weather and the chance opportunity to have a bear coming right alongside our bus. The scenery was stunning and there were plenty of photo opportunities. But what really made the day was our excellent guide, Mike, who entertained us from the moment we set off til the minute he dropped us off. He was funny, informative, speaking with enthusiasm despite having probably done a similar talk hundreds of times. His chirpy upbeat style reminded me of Robin Williams, quick with a joke, warm and friendly. Thanks so much, Mike, you really made it memorable

Each part of this tour was well organized. We were picked up right by our cruise ship—-our tour guide was incredible—-very accommodating to each of his guests——took us to several photo op locations that were not part of the scheduled trip——the length of the tour was perfect. Hard to believe all tht we were able to see in this short period of time——would highly recommend this tour.

Conner was the best guide ever. Very knowledgeable. Knew of the right places to stop for pictures. Was the photographer for everyone. If you left without plenty of pictures of you and your party, it wasn't because of our guide and driver. He even took extra time at the Yukon Border so everyone could glass the Dall Sheep we saw on the mountain. Conner. You're the best.

Safety was the priority of our tour guide Connor. This was a small group tour and he made sure he counted everyone each time we got off the bus and back on. He also took pictures of all us at all the stops. Connor knew his Alaskan and Yukon history very well, providing narration along the way as well as answering all questions. The scenery was stunning! Unlike the train along the same route, this bus tour allows for stops and pictures along the way.

Our guide, Connor was terrific. He is very knowledgeable and patient and even took his time to help everyone take family photos. The highlight was when he recited a famous Yukon poem from memory. That kind of knowledge was really impressive.

We took this tour while visiting Skagway on a cruise ship. We have previously taken the White Pass Railroad and seen some of the other local attractions. We chose this tour for a different way of seeing the area.
The Frontier Tours rep was waiting at the appointed time at the end of the pier and directed us to our bus/van. There were 17 people in our group so there was plenty of room (as opposed to ship tours that tend to be crowded). Our driver/guide did a great job of explaining what we were going to see and providing commentary during the tour. We stopped at several viewpoints along the way to Canada and the Yukon. At one point, he spotted some mountain goats and a bear. We also stopped at the Suspension Bridge.
We enjoyed the tour and the smaller group. Frontier Tours is a family owned, small business in Skagway, which is something we appreciate. They provide a good experience and we highly recommend them.

Bonus: We saw three different black bears (including a cinnamon bear!) in three different places along the roadway. Even if we hadn’t, this was still a great excursion and I would highly recommend.
Cost: Very reasonably priced. (With the money you save, you can tip your driver. Optional, of course, but if you have Patrick like we did, no doubt you will.)
Mini-bus: This is like a shuttle bus. The capacity seemed no more than 36 plus driver so it was a small group for a tour. Easy boarding and deboarding. It was nice being in a small group compared to thousands on our cruise ship.
Educational: We learned a lot about the area, gold rush, native peoples, wildlife, etc.
Variety: Waterfall, Welcome to Alaska sign, a rock Patrick calls Alligator Rock (see pic, it’s facing left. I also like Crocodile Rock as an option after the song), Lake Tutshi “Beach” (boat launch), the Yukon Suspension Bridge, Yukon sign. And, bears on the roadside! When at the signs, Patrick offered to take pics of those in the groups who opted. This was great because we don’t carry a selfie stick. Also, it kept things in an orderly fashion.
Tips:
• The shuttle bus movement lulled me to sleepiness. Do what you can to stay awake. (I suppose a good night’s sleep is helpful.) I tried sitting up.
• You are in Canada when at the Yukon Suspension Bridge, so don’t forget about the exchange rate when you see the prices at the café or gift shop. It can help soften the blow of the tourist attraction pricing. Perhaps use a card that doesn’t charge an exchange fee.
• Bring snacks.
• Have your camera/phone ready. You may end up with a bear photo op!

We had an amazing time on this tour and I'd highly recommend it. I'd read that the rail tour has some great scenery but you don't get to stop and take photos. On this bus tour we had a group of 13 of us. After the pick up, we got a brief history of Skagway and our guide pointed out some of the older buildings. Then onto the scenic drive through the pass. Every 5-10 mins we'd stop at yet another breathtaking vista and take a quick look and some photos. Our guide volunteered to take a photo of each group at each location and she did a pretty good job. Our only minor gripe was that it felt a bit rushed at each stop because we had a lot of ground to cover. Eventually, we crossed the border and ended at the Yukon Suspension Bridge and had a 45 min stop. They had some decent bison chili for sale there. We spent a short time going over the bridge and exploring and then headed out a bit further for a few more stops and viewpoints. Then we drove back with fewer stops and some interesting stories from our guide about the early explorers. This was an excellent tour and great opportunity for some beautiful photos.

Our guide Connor was very accommodating and informative as he drove us in a small bus to the Yukon border and and then back to Skagway. He made many stops along the way to give us a chance to really take in the beautiful views. He explained much about the gold rush and the two different passes to cross the mountains. The suspension bridge crossing on foot was fun and the view spectacular. It was definitely worth our time and money to do this tour.

This experience was amazing. We made a bunch of stops which was great. Saw beautiful scenery, mirrored lake, Yukon sign, Welcome to Alaska sign, the suspension bridge in Canada and even saw a bear. On all the stops, we were able to take great pictures and videos. Our driver Beverly had a quirky sense of humor which was great and she also had a ton of knowledge of the area. Chris was also incredible in taking my phone calls and special request I had for helping my mom do the tour with a wheelchair. Would do this tour again in a heartbeat.

It was 4 hours but the guide asked us all when we needed to be back at the ship. As we all had lots of time she wasn’t in a hurry.

How long is the stop at the suspension bridge? Do we have to cross it? My husband is afraid of heights.

Does the bus actually enter Yukon? Is there a border crossing?
Written May 17, 2019
Yes, you do enter the border (there is a Customs check, which is why you must bring your passport on this excursion), and the guide stopped at the Yukon border sign to take photos of anyone who wanted one. You don't go far into the Yukon, but you will have the photo!

Is this a good option for someone with a walker,
Written April 23, 2019

Skagway, Alaska
We do take people with Walkers if they are foldable. We can store on the bus but do like to know in advance so please make a note in your booking if you do book the tour. You don't have to get on and off the bus at every stop if you don't wish and there are large windows on the bus. You can use the walker around the Suspension bridge stop though may not want to walk across the bridge with the walker.

There are somewhat limited restroom stops on this tour besides the nice one we have access to at the Yukon Suspension Bridge stop. Other than that one, it is limited to a couple primitive outhouses.
