In Kenai Fjords National Park, over half of the landmass is covered by the enormous Harding Icefield, a thousand-foot block of ice that dates back to the last Ice Age. The Harding spills out in all directions in the form of glaciers. Some stretch northwest into rugged hills of the Kenai Peninsula. Others—five of them, to be exact—reach as far as the sea along the craggy coast of the Gulf of Alaska.

My family visited Seward last week, and our number one experience that we were looking forward to was a Kenai Fjords National Park Cruise. We booked our tickets in February due to the fact that they sell out quickly, which meant we were unable to predict the weather at the time of booking. Unfortunately, on the day of our cruise, the weather was pretty crappy. It was very foggy, raining, and the water was pretty choppy. When we arrived at the check-in desk, we were given the option to rebook (if any open availability), a full refund if uncomfortable with the weather, or attempt to go on the cruise with the potential of turning around/partial refund if the weather got worse. My family decided to go forward with the trip since it was our only opportunity to fit in into our trip, but we appreciated having the options given to us.

The views were slightly obstructed by weather, and the water was definitely a little rougher than usual. Thankfully none of my family has problems with sea-sickness and were still able to enjoy the ride. Our captain (Cpt. Eric) and crew were great. They did their best to make the trip comfortable and gave warning when we approached rougher patches of water. They found every opportunity to point out wildlife and unique features of scenery. Even with the rough weather we saw a small pod of orcas, a humpback whale, sea otters, sea lions, harbor seals, and multiple bird species. You could tell they were trying hard to locate wildlife in order to make a good experience for guests on board.

We visited Aialik Glacier and it was beautiful. We spent an appropriate amount of time watching the glacier, with our captain giving us information on the natural history of the area. We even got to see some calving events. After the glacier, and on the return back to Seward, we were given a lunch (chicken wrap and chips) and a warm cookie. This gave a great opportunity to sit in the cabin and enjoy the scenery while warming up a bit. Masks were required while sitting inside, but not required when outside. Staff did enforce this rule to the best of their ability.

Overall, I really enjoyed our experience on Kenai Fjords Tours and would highly recommend to anyone looking to do a wildlife/glacier tour in Alaska. The crew was friendly and knowledgeable, skilled in finding wildlife, and accommodating with any concerns throughout the trip. I look forward to visiting again in the future, hopefully with better weather.

We had a positive experience on this cruise despite rainy weather. We also made a similar cruise in Whittier (reviewed separately) that we thought has an edge in how they deliver.

The company offers great flexibility in refunds when the weather is not cooperating. Although rain is common in Seward, you might still reconsider if it's very rainy. Was our day, and we saw darn little...darn little wildlife and just glimpses of glaciers beneath the low lying clouds. The company doesn't control that, yet if you have the flexibility to wait for sun, we recommend doing that.

Boarding is a semi-controlled free-for-all. The check in desk tells you to gather there about 30 minutes before boarding time. Well, by then, there were 30 people waiting on a line on the dock. Boarding is first come first served, and people being the way they are, immediately spread out "claiming" each table. We saw families struggling to find a place to sit together.

There's a basic lunch offered. Lower quality than the competitor. Although we acknowledge the cruise isn't about lunch.

The crew was very professional and the Captain did a great job narrating the cruise .

The boat itself is designed for some lumpy seas. The bathroom facilities are very limited and outside.

Tips:

1. Line up at the awning leading to the dock early, particularly if you have a family with kids.
2. Bring your binoculars.
3. Dress for the rain and cold, even in August.
4. Take a good look at the weather forecast before making a decision to go.
5. Bring your mask. Need to wear it inside the ship, but not outside. (crew kind of gave up on enforcement a couple hours in...we were seated near "those" kind of people).

All told it is a solid operation, just not as polished as the other cruise we reviewed. That should not dissuade you...just setting expectations.

This is the best company to travel with, as they have plenty of room (looked like the only boat with a full 360 degree walk-around) for everyone to see the National Park clearly.

We could not have picked a better day (beginning of May) to take this trip. The winds were fairly reasonable (9-12 mph out of the West), so at times the water was more rough than desired (Dramamine is a must if you have motion-sickness). The boat crew was incredible at pointing out wildlife and providing information regarding the history surrounding Seward and the Kenai Fjords National Park. Bring multiple layers of clothes, gloves, boots, rain gear, and cash (they sell warm drinks and alcohol on board). Lunch was a chicken wrap, chips, and a granola bar. Three bathrooms located at the back of the boat (I recommend using them at the beginning of the trip). We saw almost every wildlife possible (didn’t see Puffins or Killer Whales). Overall, I would highly recommend this trip to anyone considering exploring this national park.

Nice 6 hour tour.
The boat ride was nice in the bays, however rougher open water contributed to at least 7 passengers being sea sick. Also the weather was cooler and misty all day, so bring warm clothes. The Captain did great in finding sea life: Whales, Orca, Sea Lion Puffin and Dolphin, no land creatures this trip. Which was nice, now I do not have to go on a puffin or whale tour. Also I suggest bringing your own food.

My only negative was the FOOD, probably the WORST I've had offered on excursions. A tasteless, store bought tortilla and chicken wrap. so dry. For a trip costing $220 a person, (tax, fees and extra gas surcharge) I expected better.

Oh, if you expecting to see a lot of glaciers, this is not the trip for you. We saw 1 main site with 2 to its left and that's all.

This was a 1 and done trip, no repeat needed.

We went with our sons, ages 16 & 24. They were impressed.

The crew started the excursion with some cruise humor, and within fifteen minutes we were already seeing wildlife…seals and whales.

The trip was amazing. We saw three species of whales, sea otters, harbor seals, puffins, and more. The crew did an awesome job of taking care of the passengers. The ship was designed to get close to shore, so we saw even more things up-close.

We were able to see the Aialik Glacer calve, an uncommon opportunity. The crew even asked the passengers to share their videos.

Lunch was chicken/lettuce wrapped in a tortilla, with a bag of potato chips, a granola bar, and a mint. Drinks a week extra, but reasonably priced for a “captive audience.” Passengers received a fresh baked chocolate chip cookie near the end of the six-hour cruise.

I would do it again, but would bring extra snacks and bottled water.

The six-hour tour was just about right. Be sure to bring a stocking cap, light gloves, and squall or rain gear.

Had a fantastic time!! Starting with Beth at the customer service to our captain on board, Eric, everyone were friendly. Beth helped us cancel our tour for a full refund on the day we were booked due to bad weather and also gave coupons to the nearby aquarium to spend our day. She also made sure to book us on the same tour the next day as there were seats available.
The cruise itself was phenomenal. We had a great captain who stopped at all the right spots and waited patiently for the wildlife to show up and educated us the entire 6hrs! Vegetarian wrap and cookie they gave for lunch was also very good. There were patches of rough weather and we were ok but there were a few who got sick on the boat. So if you are prone to seasickness and the seas happen to be rough when you travel, you may want to be prepared.. Otherwise, it's a must do in Seward.

5 stars for the experience; we saw a humpback whale, tons of sea lions, birds, awesome landscapes including glaciers and a sea lion rookery. Really awesome, totally should do it... but on a weekday/ less busy day or after the pandemic subsides.

-3 stars for the experience among COVID19. The company doesn't even recommend, let alone require, masks onboard. That resulted in ~20% total of travelers wearing masks on a VERY packed boat plus one employee never having a mask on. A couple travelers were sick, coughing a ton, still with no mask on. The company said they filled the boat to 50% capacity, but that's still less than 3 feet of distance between people in certain areas while stopping at viewpoints. The boat has an outdoor and indoor part. While the boat is moving, the outdoor deck is fine. The air is moving and very cold so people mostly stay indoors. But indoors, people are packed like sardines. When the boat isn't moving (at a viewpoint) everyone goes on the deck and it's extremely packed. I went on a sunny Saturday and really wished I picked a weekday with cloudy forecast.

TLDR: Definitely go but be 100% sure the boat isn't packed (call them and ask for their less booked day) or go post-pandemic.

This tour was well worth the price in my opinion. The experience can be very dependent on the time of year and the weather. The weather was great when we left Seward but the staff did warn us that the weather can change quickly and their staff is well trained to deal with sea sickness. I am not prone to motion sickness but it has been hit or miss for me on previous Caribbean cruises so I pre-medicated just in case. On our way to the National Park, the captain spotted a research vessel and was able to find a pod of killer whales which was amazing. We were able to see several fairly close up and was one of the highlights of the day. She did her best to keep the boat as stable as possible but the seas got a little choppy in the open water. As we made our way to the glaciers, the clouds moved in and we started to get some rain. If the boat is able to make it over to Kenai Fjords, the glaciers are amazing up close. The staff may even have some signs for photos (holiday card anyone?). We were able to see several glaciers up close and some amazing scenery in Resurrection Bay. Some rougher weather moved in on our way back to Seward so we weren't able to spend much time outside. The staff was knowledgeable and helpful throughout the cruise. If you are prone to motion sickness, talk to the staff on shore before getting on the boat because it could be pretty miserable if you spend 4-6 hours feeling nauseous. None of our group experienced this but there were a few people on board that were having issues with this. Overall a great way to see Kenai Fjords National Park!

This was one of the tours that I would recommend to anyone going to Alaska. The ship was very comfortable and clean, crews were helpful and the captain was wonderful. She kept finding the animals to look at, slowing down, moving around, narrating us what and where to look.... we got to see a lot of them: whales, dall's porpoise, sea lions, otters, puffins, orcas, eagles, black bear and goats on the land, too. And the glacier. She picked Holgate Glacier for the day.

Weather was rather rough - raining and windy, but it was still fun. I had very brief period of sea sickness after going up front to see something. Stay in back if you have a tendency to get sea sickness. (The captain told us, too.) Lunch and snacks in between viewing were great. It didn't feel like 6 hours. Passed by so quick.

We parked our car at their designated parking lot about 5 min walk (or use shuttle provided). It was very convenient.

We had a fantastic day on the water! Due to COVID, the capacity is limited, and this actually worked in our favor because you aren't competing for views with other people. We parked in the satellite parking lot down the street from the office, and a shuttle took us over, where we checked in quickly and browsed the gift shop. We were prepared with patches for seasickness, because we normally do get sea sick in the open water, and we did not experience anything on this trip. We rode on the Aialik, and everyone on our boat wore masks. We discovered that masks are like little face scarves when you are outside - they are very warm! :-) The seats were also distanced with signs marking some of them off. Honestly, we did not have an issue with any COVID procedures during our trip, but that probably depends a lot on the compliance of the passengers. Our captain was professional, and she spent a lot of time with the orcas and also a humpback whale. She made sure that we saw wildlife and gave us a lot of information about what we were seeing. She tried SO hard to get the glacier to calve, and we appreciated her efforts, but just seeing it was enough! The crew was also very nice and offered to take photos of us. The bathrooms were clean. We saw orcas, puffins, sea lions, sea otters, and a number of other wildlife. We took the tour without Fox Island, so we were back in time for dinner in Seward. We were served a perfectly fine lunch of a chicken wrap, a granola bar, and chips, and we got a freshly baked cookie on the way back. You could also purchase food and drinks on board, and as the captain said, "It's 5:00 somewhere!" ;-) We enjoyed our tour very much!
