What an amazing time overall. The restaurant was incredibly slow, but Mitchell (bartender) was extremely nice. Our tour guide was one of the best!!! The only thing missing that night was the Northern Lights. 😔

Joseph was a wonderful guide that provided great information about Alaska and the surrounding areas. We loved the whole experience. The ice museum was fascinating and we loved the hot springs. The restaurant had fantastic food that was very good for everyone and the price was very reasonable.

Absolutely loved our experience with this company. The ice museum was a treat to look at. The highlight of my day was going in the snow cat to see the northern lights. Which we got to do that very night that we tried. The Hot Springs are very relaxing and enjoyable worth staying a few days.I would recommend this company the northern light tour the Hot Springs etc.

I'll start by saying I worked as a tour guide in AK for a few years. Not that I was great, just that I kind of generally know what the scene is. This one was pretty rough. I'd even say using the word "tour" in the name was a hell of a stretch. It absolutely had to be our guide's first day on the job. I've been to Chena twice before and was honestly just more confused because our guide hadn't been there before (this is a guess but I'd put a ton on money on it. 5 other members of my group were there for the first time). Everyone has to learn their trade through experience so I totally understand that not every person/experience is gonna "wow" you. But the company could have had our guide read the Chena brochure and maybe also one 3-minute article on tour-guiding on any link from Google's first 20 pages of results. Maybe first 40, cause google is a very effective search engine and probably has tons of blogs about this stuff. Hell, let's say any article about being a tour guide on the first 100 pages of google results just to be safe. We got picked up from Pike's Landing Hotel where we met the guide, filled out the release form, etc. She didn't really take any command or let us know what was happening...not just during the initial meet, but ever. No info on the drive out from the guide, but that's okay. We pulled over at one point unannounced and asked where we were. Guide just had to pee. Human nature but you can play that as "last chance to load up on beverages or snacks before the springs" or something like that. No...just pee. We got to Chena, and had to prod for some super basic info. Like...where do we get our tickets to the ice museum? (cause they were included or we would have bought them ourselves)....where do we meet to get a ride home?....how late is the restaurant open? So it became very clear it was our guide's first time at Chena, at least in a very long time. She had no idea what was going on, but did let us know that the restaurant was open til midnight and got us the ice museum tickets eventually but just didn't seem to know how any of it worked (next time tell the group to busy themselves in the gift shop while you do this part). It was busy so we stood there while other people just bought tickets and our guide told the lady the wrong tour company name like 3 times. Eventually she guessed the tour company name correctly and we did the ice tour, awesome as always. We drank the apple-tini, they were great and then headed toward the restaurant as we were looking forward to a meal before our soak. The restaurant was packed after the ice museum tour let out so we went to the springs and met up at 10:30 to go to dinner. Turns out the kitchen closed at 10 so we didn't get to eat til we got home at like 1am. Saying the restaurant is open til midnight, when the kitchen closes at 10 is a decent oversight (and for crying out loud so easy to know when your a "tour guide" to a super touristy place and its $170 per person to take your tour) when your 62 miles from home. Our fault for not just looking it up ourselves I guess? It was cloudy out so no attempt at aurora but that's cool. No info about Alaska on the drive. However, if you are into gardening she will really open up about that topic. As we entered Fairbanks we started passing different bars/breweries as she pointed out that she was at one of them earlier that day for her sister's birthday. That explains the energy drink she purchased at the "bathroom stop" on the way to Chena! Overall, really no info from our tour guide the whole time. We just kind of prodded and she deflected or gave us the wrong info except for a few things. Also overall....I really think the company should have sent our guide on what is known in the industry as a "familiarity run" to learn about the place prior to taking a group paying a decent amount. But, we will just go with anyone else ever, or I'll bite the bullet and DD next time.

Don't want to get to in-depth here but our guide had to be covering a shift for a friend. She literally went on the tour with us (into the ice museum and springs) and it was obviously her first time. No company should be charging people to be "guided" when the guide doesn't know where they are. Literally the definition of guide is "a person who advises or shows the way to others." We just all learned about Chena together!

We did get out to Chena hot springs and back so that was good cause none of us wanted to DD.

Better than Dreams
Feb 2021 • Solo
All the review its about our tour guide Joe, he was beyond special with me and my wife, we went in a solo trip to chena hotsprings and Aurora view tour, and Joe was amazing, he was always aware to make us feel the best way possible, respectful and always in the best mood. He let us know the entire time that the tour was all about us and to make sure to let him know anything we wanted or needed. About the tour, the hot springs are amazing, even in the freezing cold of the night, and the Aurora’s gave us the best show our eyes ever saw.
If Joe is reading these. Thanks a lot friend. God bless you and your wife.

Awesome experience at Chena and aurora viewing with our guide Brooke
We had a blast with out guide Brooke. She was very kind, friendly, funny, and made sure we had a great time at the hot springs. She went ahead and took pictures of us whenever we needed to, did her best so we had good spots at the ice museum, gave us tips to have a wonderful time in the hot springs and took us to a very nice dark spot outside the resort so we could see see the auroras. The whole experience exceeded our expectations and Brooke was key for that to happen. 100% would recommend.

Dec 2019
Had a Great Experience on 1st Alaska Tours with our Guide Joseph, he took care of us throughout the whole trip and kept us informed on all the activities going on so we wouldn't miss anything. The ice museum was nice and recommend getting the apple martini in the ice glass. The hot springs, nice and warm. Also the restaurant there had really good food. Thanks Joseph for making it a great experience.
