- ExpatGeorge0 contributionsExcellent Private Guided Tour of the Gettyburg BattlefieldsMy family and I enjoyed a wonderful Three Hour Private Guided Tour of the Gettysburg Battlefields last summer. Our guide, Paul Baily, is a retired Army officer with a deep knowledge of military history, and he did a superb job escorting us around the Battlefields and explaining the significance of what we saw and the developments of this epic and important Civil War battle. He was extremely friendly and also excellent at keeping my two young daughters engaged, helping them to connect the dots as they begin to learn American history. Highly recommended.Written November 15, 2024
- margareth3500 contributionsFantastic Tour of Gettysburg Battlefield! My husband and I booked a three hour tour of the Gettysburg battlefield through the Gettysburg Heritage Center. We were assigned Louis Trott who was an amazing guide. Louis drove our car which is the way to do it. He was an expert on the battle and drove us easily to all the different points telling us interesting stories and all the details. Three hours may seem like a lot but it flew by and he even extended it another half hour! Booking a tour guide for this historical site is the best way to make the most of your visit. Driving around this huge area on your own, even with an audio guide etc would take you forever and you wouldn’t understand what was going on there during the battle. Louis made the battle come alive!Written November 11, 2024
- Jennifer T0 contributionsAmazing 4 hour tourDid a 4 hour private tour for $175. Great value for the 4 of us. I would highly recommend. Our guide, Paul, was incredibly knowledgeable. There is no way we could have seen and learned what we did on our own.Written November 5, 2024
- CmdrTMD0 contributionsFantastic Battlefield Tour with a Knowledgeable GuideWe booked a 3 hour battlefield tour through the Gettysburg Heritage Center and had an absolutely fantastic experience. Our guide, Joel, was exceptionally knowledgeable not just about the Battle of Gettysburg but also the Civil War overall and was able to adapt the tour to our group (We had two Civil War buffs among us, one of whom had spent a great deal of time studying Gettysburg). He balanced covering the overall picture with visits to some of the lesser visited but very important parts of the battlefield. We were all very happy with the tour and would definitely recommend Joel.Written November 4, 2024

- 2MuchFun4One0 contributionsA Tour to RememberMyself, and two family members booked the four hour tour with a licensed tour guide. The tour guide drives your car and gives you a personal account of each days significant (and less significant, that made a huge impact on the Battle of Gettysburg) Lewis, our guide was hands down the most informative, thourough and engaging person we have ever met. We are so glad we had him and the four hour tour as you needed all that time of the in depth understanding of what actually occurred. Well worth every penny and wish we actually had more time. Great job and look forward to our next visit!Written October 13, 2024

She has so much knowledge about the battle that she made it come alive! She did the tour chronologically Jul 1 to July 3, 1863 as she drove and made appropriate stops along the way. - U8635XIericr0 contributionsA Pleasant and Worthy Surprise! The Gettysburg Heritage Center was a very pleasant surprise. Although it appears unassuming from the outside, inside was an excellent museum with a unique view of the battle and its aftermath. While the film of the troop movements gave a concise overview of military operations, the rest of the Center explored the battle from the inhabitants' point of view. We learned about the trials that Gettysburg's populace had to endure and their attempts to aid the troops in any way they could. This would be a good addition to any trip to Gettysburg.Written September 14, 2024

I went solo to this very educational visit to the museum. The museum exhibit starts with a trip to the theater to watch a 20 minute video of the Battle of Gettysburg. The movie is very descriptive about the battle. Next I went into a man made civilian house where the re enactment of how civilians dealt with the war at the time. It was very interesting and I was very impressed by this experience. The rest of the museum shows real life civilian testimonies of the battle and the Gettysburg address. I highly recommend a visit here.

So happy to hear you enjoyed your visit to our museum! It is a great place to start when you come to Gettysburg. We try to lay the foundation of what took place, so that when you go out and explore the town and the battlefield, you have a basic understanding of the events that unfolded here in 1863. From the sounds of it, we were able to accomplish all of that for you!
Please stop back and visit with us again!
Thank you!

We toured the Heritage Center & Museum and enjoyed the movie prior to our 3 hour private tour. This was a first time for our children and grandchildren, this visit gave them a fabulous introduction to the conflict in Gettysburg. It provided many details that they did not know taught in their schools. The individual guided tour is well worth the money, these guides are both knowledgeable and passionate and the information they share is unbelievable.

Wow! So glad that we found the heritage center! We booked an auto tour and were fortunate to get Bob, a retired history teacher and Gettysburg expert! We learned so much from him and were moved by the stories and interaction that we had with him. Our kids are 13, 11, and 9 and he tailored many of the stories to spark their interest. I highly recommend the heritage center.

Thank you for the amazing review! We are always eager to help visitors with tour options - there are many, and finding the right method is key! It sounds like a private tour was exactly what you were looking for. The Licensed Battlefield Guides are a great way to learn about the battle! As with your tour, they can cater the experience to the audience.
Thank you for visiting with us, and please stop back and see us again!

Thank you for taking the time to give us a review! We greatly appreciate it!
The private guided tour of the battlefield is an excellent way to tour Gettysburg! We recommend to anyone taking the private tour with the Licensed Battlefield Guide to see our movie before heading out onto the battlefield. It offers a great overview, and orientation, laying the foundation for what the guide will talk about while out on the tour.
Thank you again!

There was no line, we were the first ones in at 8 am when they opened; they show a video of the Battle of Gettysburg which explains the 3 day battle and then you tour their museum of Gettysburg History. It was really neat to see the artifacts and things kept from the 1863 war. Great for families to see.

We hadn't visited Gettysburg since we were teens over a decade ago, so when we learned of the remodel here, we thought we were bummed. I did not expect this level of high quality display of history at the heritage center and was blown away! This museum makes you feel like you are really there experiencing the civil war era. The heritage did not disappoint. 10/10 recommend for history nerds and families on a trip like us! Our kids are 11 and 7 and also really enjoyed the experiences. Loved it and will be back!

We had a great tour guide for our Battlefield Tour. Mike R was very knowledgeable on the war and was able to answer any questions we had. You can see his love for the battlefield and what it stands for.
The museum was very insightful and provided a precursor to what we were going to hear on our tour.

For being on the small side, this museum is very well curated and has a lot of information about how "regular" folks were impacted by the Civil War. The dioramas are as lifelike as any mannekins can be. There are many artifacts to look at and read about in depth. I enjoyed the 3-D pictures - I had no idea that photographers of the time expected their work to be seen using a stereoscope! One short little film was especially good when viewed through the disposable glasses.
The "feature" film at 18 minutes gave a very understandable presentation of the flow of the Battle of Gettysburg, interesting enough that even the high school aged kids were quiet and respectful throughout.
I didn't stop to browse the shop, but they certainly have a lot of stuff one can buy, including several shelves of books. Nice staff, ample parking in back or possibly across the street.

My family and I booked the 2 hour (guide-driven) battlefield tour and Robert (Bob) Steenstra was randomly assigned as our licensed tour guide. In all my years of touring historic sites in the United States and Europe, Bob stands out as the most informed and dynamic guide I have experienced. He is clearly an expert and the manner in which he presents history is engaging and mesmerizing. Bob made history come alive and presented the battlefield history from all vantage points and perspectives. It would be impossible to engage a better tour guide. He made the Gettysburg trip one of my very favorites.

The three members of my family enjoyed every minute of our Guide as he navigated key sites around Gettysburg, from the days prior to the battle, the three-day battle, and the days after. He was vastly knowledgeable and answered every question we posed with deep context surround his answer. I... all three of us highly recommend booking a Guide!
