Disappointing & Disconnected
“Decedent & gourmet” are fine to put in your tour name, so long as you acknowledge that you’ve created a customer expectation, which in our case was woefully undeserved. (Disclosure #1: I’ve been an architectural/history tour guide & we’ve taken many food tours throughout the US & Europe, so my expectations may be a bit higher, but no higher than I’d apply to myself in a similar tour guide type of role.) We started at the Reading Market with Matt & his assistant. - and Matt was a pleasant & enthusiastic guide. The Market was a great place to start, but it’s huge & crowded. They could have reconnoitered a little more; we saw (maybe) less than half the vendors, then were shepherded outside to the oppressive heat w/o any seating (couldn’t eat inside) had our 1st food offering: a MINI-corn dog (large cocktail wiener size) on a stick & couple of fried cheese curds. Are you seeing the disconnect between “gourmet” & corn dog, fried cheese . . . Then we went back in the Market to get a Middle Eastern offering: a stuffed grape leaf, falafel, hummus & few leaves of lettuce/dressing & totally uninspiring pita bread. (Disclosure #2: we live around Dearborn Mi, home to the largest Middle East population in the US, so we’re no strangers to great Middle East food, & good out-of-the brick oven pitas are heavenly.) The flat blah pitas you can get at a convenience store - that were part of the tour offering - not so much. Finally, before we left the market, a doughnut. Kind of the KrispyKreme variety, but not as good, like they pulled the doughnut out of the frying oil too soon & got an opaque sugary ring of chewy mush. I’m actually pretty ‘live & let live’ about food, but my wife & daughter are official doughnut snobs. My wife pitched hers after a couple bites, quietly complaining, I consumed mine w/a resigned shrug, thinking “maybe they just don’t ‘do’ doughnuts in Philadelphia”. She was still complaining a couple days later about the worst doughnut she ever had. Leaving the Market, we walked through the historic Wanamaker Bldg - now a Macy’s - to a very fancy steakhouse in a refurbished bank. No food, but an interesting ‘quickie peek’ at how the rich & famous wine & dine. Then on to a neighborhood grocery w/a closed restaurant on the 2nd floor, where Matt did a very interesting presentation on cheeses - easily the (singular) highlight of the tour. Note that I can’t cite names of proprietors, because this is the only food tour I’ve ever been on in which there was no handout: map, list of vendors, brief notes about the culinary offerings or food scene in Philadelphia, etc. From here, on to the final stop at a bakery (again, the name escapes me, & without any reference document . . .), but not w/o incident. Matt’s assistant held the group (seven, six of whom were female, most age 65+) at a busy street corner (no shade) for multiple light changes, while he gave the decidedly unabridged version of the story about the height of the city hall sculpture & the curse on sports teams attributable to the subsequent construction of a couple skyscrapers. This was a guide faux pax on several levels (don’t keep seniors who’ve been on their feet for a couple hours standing in intense sun getting buffeted by pedestrians while they listen to a drawn out version of a story in which they probably have limited interest). The tour ended at the bakery - again, can’t remember the name . . . w/a chocolate chip cookie, which was good.
As non-Philadelphians, we were looking forward to a cheesesteak (depending on size, maybe one cut in half or thirds). No such luck. In fact, portions were noticeably smaller & in general, the volume of food was less than any tour I’ve ever been on. I had the feeling they were bolstering their profit margin by skimping on food, a strategy I’d expect from big corporate America, but not one that’s going to get you endorsements from your customers, and a Philadelphia food tour w/o ANY cheesesteak . . . Come on man! In summary, given that there are several food tours available, there HAVE to to options that are better than this one.

We truly value your feedback and will strive to make our tours a fantastic experience for everybody. But I feel that your 1-star rating does not accurately reflect some of the praises you did share about our tour. Please allow me to address what you've raised. The tour's title "Decadent Gourmet" will be undergoing a change very soon. The tour had undergone a few changes in the past years, and we plan to update the title ASAP. I apologize if the title was misleading, but hopefully you found the description on our website to be helpful when booking your tour with us. You are correct in that the Reading Terminal Market was busier because it was a Saturday, but there was still ample space for walking and for the "reconnoitering" that we did. Hopefully our intimate group size of only 7 people allowed you to feel the tour to be personable. COVID regulations have limited our ability to eat in front of all of our vendors and we appreciate your understanding of that. Since there are almost 80 vendors in the Market, we certainly cannot show you all of them, as our tour includes many components outside of the Market too. I'm sorry that you did not enjoy the pita or the doughnut. The pita was mostly intended to use in the dips, but Kamal's makes everything else on sight themselves. They are kind enough to put together that sample plate exclusively for our tours and I hope you enjoyed the other selections they provided. The doughnut we provided is considered to be one of the (if not the most) popular doughnuts in Philadelphia. We've never gotten complaints about that before and am sorry that you did not enjoy the soft, fluffy glazed doughnut. I'm glad you enjoyed the many other food items we provided, including the cheeses, cookie, corndog, and curds. We designed our tour to provide tastings of many food items, and most guests feel that the cheese curds, plate of 5 Middle Eastern foods, corndog, cheese tasting, and two desserts are a generous amount. There were others on your tour who took the final bite to-go, but I apologize if this did not meet your expectations for quantity. We do offer a few other food tours in Philadelphia, including our Flavors of Philly food tour, which provides a cheesesteak and many other foods that Philly is most famously known for. Our website includes what to expect on each tour and I hope you had a chance to review that before selecting which tour to attend. If you still want a cheesesteak with us, we'd be happy to have you join our Flavors of Philly food tour! You also mentioned not having a route or handout, but we did share the QR code at the conclusion of the tour, which provided you with the list and links to all of our partnered vendors, discounts to other attractions in Philadelphia, a discount code for future tours, and much more. Please reach out if you would like this again and we will happily share it with you once again. This was our new Tour Guide's first time giving a tour, so we had Matt join to ensure that everything went smoothly and that the tour was enjoyable for all. Please excuse the new Guide's learning curve, but thank you very much for your great remarks about Matt. We're happy to see that you still found him, many of the food items, and the other "quickie peek" stops to be fun. Since there seem to be some highlights in your review, I wish you were able to reconsider your 1-star rating. We look forward to having the opportunity to give you that cheesesteak you wanted on another one of our tours and hopefully keep your satisfaction.

Matt was awesome! As people who live near Philly is was super fun getting to try new food we normally would not have. Matt made sure everyone was socially distant and upheld covid standards Philly set in place, making it a safe fun time for everyone.

This is one food tour that you need to take
The Decadent Gourmet Food tour was one of the best ways to experience a wide variety of the many incredible food offerings that Philadelphia has in a 2 hour time slot. Our tour guide, Matt, was extremely charismatic and incredibly knowledgeable about the history of each vendor we visited, local Philadelphia history in general, and the cheeses that we sampled towards the end of our trip. This tour is an absolute must if you visit Philadelphia, even during COVID.

Take the Tour--You'll Love it

High energy tour with fun different stops to taste. Matt, our guide, was perfect---engaging, informed, gregarious, enthusiastic about the tour, about the places we stopped, and about food generally. Beyond the food we learned about the lore of Philly along the way. As foodies we enjoyed immensely. Highly recommend especially if you get Matt.

Perfect Philly afternoon!
We only had 36 hours in town and had to choose an activity wisely. In only a couple of hours, we covered a lot of ground while learning about history, architecture and the Philly food scene. We tasted several delicious and truly “decadent” local favorites. Matt was our incredibly knowledgeable, passionate, and high energy guide. Definitely a great experience and highly recommend it.

Exciting Tour of Philadelphia
Oct 2019
Did this tour as a last minute fun thing to do in the city. It did not disappoint!! The Guide Matt was wonderful, very informative and showed us many neat features of the city and Reading Market. I loved the Del Frisco Restaurant Building!! Best part of the tour. I would highly recommend it for those who have lived in Philly all their lives or for any first time tourists to the city. Can't wait to try their other tours. I would definitely recommend it for my out of town guests that visit Philadelphia!
