About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- CurtK8150 contributionsA Great Tour to Eat, Drink, and EnjoyMy wife and I enjoy Food Tours wherever we travel. Philadelphia is a short trip for us in Delaware so we try to take advantage of what the city offers. This was our first time on the Passyunk Food Tour. The tour was very nice and the places we stopped at sampled the cuisine was awesome. We learned a lot about the area and all the restaurants all around us. I would recommend it to others.Written September 22, 2024
- Wendy P0 contributionsExcellent tourOur guide, Catherine was knowledgeable & friendly. The food was a sampling @ each restaurant, but large enough. I highly recommend this tour. My husband loved his birthday surprise!Written May 4, 2024
- Trudy B0 contributionsMore cheese pleaseGreat tour!! Matt was very knowledgeable about the city and took us to places that I wasn’t expecting. Very interesting. And the food was great!Written March 31, 2024
- natashawY4084YZ0 contributionsReading Terminal Market food tour a must!I did the tour with a group of work colleagues and our guide was Michael. He had lots of little interesting tid bits of information about the history of the Market and the food there. You can of course go to the market yourself and go around the stalls and buy/try things. However, some of the very popular items like Dinic’s pork/beef sandwiches (melt in your mouth meat), had a queue around the corner of you hadn’t pre-ordered! So doing the tour saves you time and disappointment too. We also had a little room that we were able to sit down and eat in with our big sandwiches. That was easier than walking around trying to eat amongst the lanes. After the tour officially finished you can ask all about any other food outlets and recommendations. Then go visit some more. Great food and great guide. Enjoy!Written November 28, 2023
- ranhop0 contributionsDear Adam’s mom 😂Dear Adam’s mom, your son was very informative and helpful and made us Canadians feel welcome. After a couple no shows, it ended up being a private tour for my husband and I. Actually it was a date and Adam third wheeled. You can tell he’s been a guide for a long time. The food was delicious, the places we visited were unique and full of character. We got a real sense of the city’s history and personality. We would recommend to anyone who wanted to get to know the city better. Thanks Adam for a great tour!Written November 19, 2023
- 299maryannc0 contributionsYou’ll want to see and sample moreThe experience is uniquely Philly, and Matt provided the connection to The Reading Terminal Market’s past and the current trend toward knowing and seeing where quality food comes from.Written April 5, 2023
- Paradise539033308050 contributionsLittle Taste of many flavorsOur tour guide, Steve, was very knowledgeable and pleasant. His knowledge of Philadelphia and the Reading Terminal Market’s history was expansive. Food tastings were good and wide-ranging (from corn dogs to falafel and whoopee pies). Orders were organized ahead of time, so there was very little waiting. Walking tour proceeded thru Wanamakers to DiBruno Bros location nearby for cheese history & tastings & another dessert treat. All in all, a different experience for a small group of adult couples. We went early and stayed late after the tour.Written November 13, 2022
- vickiea3290 contributionsDon’t book this tourI have done city tours and food tours all over the US. This was without a doubt the worst tour I’ve experienced. The cost is not worth either the quality or amount of the food or the experience in general.Written October 24, 2022
- GregD4530 contributionsGreat food experience in East Passyunk! The food tour was an amazing fun experience as our leader, Cathy, did a great job! We learned a lot about the East Passyunk area while enjoying some great food. Our favorite food item was the cheesesteak from Mike’s which went perfect with a cold beer. Highly recommend this food tour, which ended with dessert from Termini Pastries!Written July 10, 2022
- ebethsb20150 contributionsAn excellent adult activity in Philly!!During this tour, I learned so many new things about Philadelphia, and heard a couple good ghost stories too. The places we visited for food/drink were all really nice and the tastings were plentiful and delicious. City Food Tours were serious in the description of the tour when they say to come with an empty stomach. Our guide, Steve, was very knowledgeable of the history of Philadelphia, and was happy to answer all of our questions along the way. My friend (who accompanied me) and I were lucky to have a very nice couple as the other two people in our tour group. It was a lot of fun and by the end of the tour, it felt as if we had spent the evening out with friends. Take this tour, you will love it.Written July 8, 2022
- kirsty g0 contributionsNot my favorite food tourWe have done many food tours all over the world and this was my least favorite. The food wasn’t great, the guide read from a paper and it was so rushed. Everyone was leaving half of their beer so we could go to the next stop.Written May 27, 2022
- PharaohBlake0 contributionsGreat tour!!It was a great experience. Our tour guide was amazing, kind and knowledgeable. All the food really unique and delicious.Written February 27, 2022
- 647pauletteg0 contributionsLearned a lot not only about food, but about the city of Philadelphia.Learned a lot not only about food, but about the city itself. This is another thing I wished we did early on during our visit, because we not only had a fun tour and GREAT tour guide, but we saw so many different places to eat. We stayed at the Element down town, and never realized a couple blocks away was a street with several outdoor cafes and different ethnics foods restaurants. The foods we sampled were pretzel's, donut, Philly Cheese steak (whole sandwich) and "Red Pie"...basic and simple foods however our tour guide made the experience interesting.Written July 10, 2021
- 12delicial0 contributionsEat, Tour, be Happy!Whether you’re visiting Philly or live here full-time this is a must do. Well worth the price excellent value. Our tour guide Cathy was A+, she knew so much history of the neighborhood and the restaurants…an all around great experience. Surprisingly I was pretty full at the end.Written June 29, 2021
- 810kirkh0 contributionsDisappointing & Disconnected“Decedent & gourmet” are fine to put in your tour name, so long as you acknowledge that you’ve created a customer expectation, which in our case was woefully undeserved. (Disclosure #1: I’ve been an architectural/history tour guide & we’ve taken many food tours throughout the US & Europe, so my expectations may be a bit higher, but no higher than I’d apply to myself in a similar tour guide type of role.) We started at the Reading Market with Matt & his assistant. - and Matt was a pleasant & enthusiastic guide. The Market was a great place to start, but it’s huge & crowded. They could have reconnoitered a little more; we saw (maybe) less than half the vendors, then were shepherded outside to the oppressive heat w/o any seating (couldn’t eat inside) had our 1st food offering: a MINI-corn dog (large cocktail wiener size) on a stick & couple of fried cheese curds. Are you seeing the disconnect between “gourmet” & corn dog, fried cheese . . . Then we went back in the Market to get a Middle Eastern offering: a stuffed grape leaf, falafel, hummus & few leaves of lettuce/dressing & totally uninspiring pita bread. (Disclosure #2: we live around Dearborn Mi, home to the largest Middle East population in the US, so we’re no strangers to great Middle East food, & good out-of-the brick oven pitas are heavenly.) The flat blah pitas you can get at a convenience store - that were part of the tour offering - not so much. Finally, before we left the market, a doughnut. Kind of the KrispyKreme variety, but not as good, like they pulled the doughnut out of the frying oil too soon & got an opaque sugary ring of chewy mush. I’m actually pretty ‘live & let live’ about food, but my wife & daughter are official doughnut snobs. My wife pitched hers after a couple bites, quietly complaining, I consumed mine w/a resigned shrug, thinking “maybe they just don’t ‘do’ doughnuts in Philadelphia”. She was still complaining a couple days later about the worst doughnut she ever had. Leaving the Market, we walked through the historic Wanamaker Bldg - now a Macy’s - to a very fancy steakhouse in a refurbished bank. No food, but an interesting ‘quickie peek’ at how the rich & famous wine & dine. Then on to a neighborhood grocery w/a closed restaurant on the 2nd floor, where Matt did a very interesting presentation on cheeses - easily the (singular) highlight of the tour. Note that I can’t cite names of proprietors, because this is the only food tour I’ve ever been on in which there was no handout: map, list of vendors, brief notes about the culinary offerings or food scene in Philadelphia, etc. From here, on to the final stop at a bakery (again, the name escapes me, & without any reference document . . .), but not w/o incident. Matt’s assistant held the group (seven, six of whom were female, most age 65+) at a busy street corner (no shade) for multiple light changes, while he gave the decidedly unabridged version of the story about the height of the city hall sculpture & the curse on sports teams attributable to the subsequent construction of a couple skyscrapers. This was a guide faux pax on several levels (don’t keep seniors who’ve been on their feet for a couple hours standing in intense sun getting buffeted by pedestrians while they listen to a drawn out version of a story in which they probably have limited interest). The tour ended at the bakery - again, can’t remember the name . . . w/a chocolate chip cookie, which was good. As non-Philadelphians, we were looking forward to a cheesesteak (depending on size, maybe one cut in half or thirds). No such luck. In fact, portions were noticeably smaller & in general, the volume of food was less than any tour I’ve ever been on. I had the feeling they were bolstering their profit margin by skimping on food, a strategy I’d expect from big corporate America, but not one that’s going to get you endorsements from your customers, and a Philadelphia food tour w/o ANY cheesesteak . . . Come on man! In summary, given that there are several food tours available, there HAVE to to options that are better than this one.Written June 9, 2021

This was a wonderful experience. Adam was our guide. He was knowledgeable, funny and did a great job at keeping everyone interested in the history of the food we were trying. It was all so tasty! Being that this was a walking tour, we had the opportunity to see other buildings/sites in which Adam also took the time to share the history and culture of in downtown Philadelphia. Overall we were VERY happy with our experience. We would recommend it to anyone deciding whether or not to go for it. You won’t be disappointed. :)

Our tour guide Adam was very knowledgeable about the city of Philadelphia and the history of the foods that we had the pleasure of tasting. It was our first time in this city and my friend and our daughters had a wonderful time on this tour. All of the food was tasty and the tomato pie was our favorite! Adam was also happy to help with any other questions we had about dining and entertainment. I would recommend this tour to family and friends.

We got these tickets as a father's day gift for my dad. He's very hard to shop for so we all figured why not just all share an experience together. I'm really glad it was this!
My family and I went on the tour with Adam. He was a great tour guide for a handful of reasons. He knew what he was talking about, was on time, super polite (not only to us but to the food vendors) and made sure we were safe and having fun. Really nice guy with a likeable personality.
My only critique of the tour was I would have liked to have a dip or something with the pretzel. They were still really good but I think a dip would've really sealed the deal for me.
It was a really fun day and I'd recommend this to anyone!

We're so glad that you chose us to help celebrate Father's Day with your dad! We'll take into consideration adding a dip for the pretzels. But between the three different mustards, cheese sauce, chocolate sauce, and many others, it's hard to pick one! We're so glad that you had a blast with Adam, felt safe with our COVID safety measures, and enjoyed the tour otherwise. We look forward to seeing you guys again!

First time in Philly! So glad we chose City Food Tour! Matt not only shared the great food the city is known for, but many interesting food facts AND peppered it with history of the city itself. We made several unexpected stops and learned even more history of various buildings. Loved our final stop at the City Market...you could spend many hours there! Would love to return and explore more. Well done Matt! Thank you for a great afternoon! Bill and Sally 6/16

Owen is an absolutely AWESOME tour guide! He made our experience so enjoyable through his wealth of knowledge, personable interaction and great tips for exploring Philadelphia. Even as a repeat visitor to the City, there were so many unrealized hidden details that were in plain sight all along. I will definitely look at the City of Brotherly Love through a different lens after meeting Owen through the Philly Foodie Tour. Its money well spent and an experience that is priceless. We now have another spot for cheesesteaks (Zio's), an incredible steakhouse perfect for unforgettable celebrations (DelFrisco's), a new way to look at Macys as a historical site - as well as great shopping and THE way to order a proper cheesesteak (quantity, type of cheese and wit' or wit'out). Thanks so much, Owen! Cant wait to refer everyone we know to share this experience!! We will definitely see you again!!

This tour was much more than we expected! Caitlyn shared many historical facts with us regarding the restaurants, buildings/architecture, and origins of the foods! She welcomed all our questions and made us feel very comfortable asking them. She also fostered opportunities for us to get to know the other guests in the tour. She never made us feel rushed. She gave us plenty of time for pictures and conversation but we never lingered longer than needed. She was always professional, kind, and welcoming. She seemed to have an excitement and love for the city herself. We had a wonderful time! We highly recommend taking this tour. You won't be disappointed.

We are from Kansas City and tasted foods that are different for us that we wouldn't have tried on our own, and it was all fresh, hot, and delicious. My two teenage grandkids enjoyed it. The guide was very personable and made us all feel very welcomed to his city. There were 7 of us with the tour guide, so we were all involved in the conversation even though we kept some distance between us because of COVID-19. I would recommend the tour if you're new to downtown Philadelphia.

Our guide Owen was very fun and knowledgeable, and he took us to some places we would otherwise have missed. We enjoyed the food, but found that the value of the food compared to food tours we have done in other cities was low. The price was comparable to what we have paid for other food tours, but the food sampled was very cheap in comparison. By those standards, the tour is kind of expensive.

Thank you for your kind remarks on Owen and our tour altogether! Our prices are based on market research from other tours in Philadelphia and food tours across other major cities. The other food tours that we offer do have an elevated cuisine at a different price point, and those may agree with your previous experiences' pricing more closely. We appreciate you sharing your experiences with us and value reviews from al of our guests, and will take this as an opportunity to continue comparing our price point to other tours. Thank you again for joining us on our tour. We hope to see you again on one of our other food tours!

My tour was with Adam. It was a small Sunday group with me and a separate group consisting of three friends. Adam was a great guide keeping us engaged, making us laugh, and showcasing Philly’s flavor. He gave great recommendations as well, he knows his stuff! I can confidently say this is a great tour to do as a solo traveler and it would be great for a group of any size as well. The pacing was good and it was the right mix of information and eating. Thanks Adam!!

First of all, this was my first time touring Phili so I wanted an experience that would take me to some ice food spots that would get me a taste of Phili. Katelyn did just that. She was fantastic. The tour started at 1:30 and ended around 4:15. Got to get a little history of Phili and some important landmarks and locations. Not only did I get to learn, but I enjoyed some good, diverse foods too. It was overall a pleasurable experience and I would recommend this for anyone who is a first time visitor or even a repeat visitor who just wants a better experience as well as a mini tour in the heart of Phili. Best of all, you end up at Reading Terminal Market that has a ton of different foods to trial so that’s also great.

6 city blocks...which are pretty long - but it there were many stops along the way to sample the foods.

There are a lot of parking options close by the starting location and by the ending location - which aren't too far away from one another. Depending on your timing and what your plans are for after the tour, there are numerous parking lots and garages surrounding the Reading Terminal Market and close to City Hall with reasonable prices.
