Great way to see and learn about Philly
Had a fabulous guide Hilary who was a wealth of knowledge about the city. We really only came to Philly on the way to NYC to see the Rocky steps/statue but came away with so much more. Loved it and money well spent.

    Standard Big Bus Tour
This was about $36 per person. Took you to many different stops. Not a ton to say about this above and beyond. If you want to just see the sights from the upper deck it’s a good way to see the city for relatively cheap. They only we’re going 30 minutes instead of the tent 10 to 15 they advertised which was a little annoying. Overall: 8.0/10

    Frustrating & stressful
We take these Hop-On Hop-Off trolley tours whenever we vacation for the first time in a large city. They are generally very informative, providing facts that are often unknown. The trolly tour in Philadelphia was frustrating to say the least! As usually, I bought tickets in advance thru Trip Advisor, then arrived at the first location ready for the adventure. It was advertised as the Big Bus, yet we were told to get on the Red bus that was waiting to leave. As it was a comfortable day weather wise, we sat on top. Our guide introduced himself and asked if we could hear and when all said yes, off we went. That was the last time we heard his voice. The engine or was SO loud, my husband and I couldn’t even hear each other even when raising our voices. We motioned to the guide that we couldn’t hear, so he indicated that he would turn his mic up…didn’t help. The first 3 stops were what we really wanted to hear about, but we could only see our guides lips moving and him pointing in multiple directions. By stop 4, we’d had enough! The couple next to us said this happened the day before as well, and they only came on this one again to get to a place they didn’t want to walk to. So we got off and fortunately there was one of their stands where we told them how awful it was. He seems surprised, but then said “next time you should sit closer to the front or down below”. Then we were told to wait for the Big Bus since their sound was better then the Red buses. We had 20 mins to wait, so we grabbed a takeout so we wouldn’t miss the Big Bus. When it came, there were only 4 seats available and again they were up top. We decided to take 2 and were pleasantly surprised that we could actually hear! However, this guide spoke so fast, that it was difficult to understand all of it and she was often talking about the next stop while we were trying to take pics of what we were still passing. Too much information, so we were not inspired to return to investigate anything further. This is the first tour where the trolly/ bus only stopped if someone indicated they wanted to get off. All others stop for a few minutes whether someone wants off or not or even if no one is waiting to come on board. Very strange and stressful 2 hours.

    Disappointed
I was very disappointed with this as the windows downstairs where I had to sit as I’m in a wheelchair were covered by a film and you couldn’t see properly or take photos I feel I was robbed on this outing . Wouldn’t recommend if you can’t get to top of bus and lot of times people had to sit down stairs as no room upstairs couldn’t see anything! Avoid

Bus tour is a great overview of the City
We were lucky that we travelled on a warm day. It's a nice way to get an overview and make note if stops you want to return to later. Take note that the bus doesn't provide a view of the site; you have to get off the bus and walk a little. But be sure you get on one that crosses the Golden Gate Bridge. It's dramatic! Good value for the price.

    Not favorite
There are two hop on hop off bus lines. The two were working toogether on our visit. We were not as happy with big bus drivers. However they do give an adaquate history of Philly and sites.

    Always a "go to!"
Big bus was great! They sent a van to our hotel to pick us up and bring us to the beginning of the tour. One exceptional tour guide, he was super knowledgable and went above and BEYOND to share with us all he knew about his city!! Only wish I had time to find him and do it again the 2nd day😩 we ran out of time! Buses were very timely with the exception af one at the end of the day, we waited 30 minutes wich seems like an eternity in the cold! All in all was good and will do the all inclusive "go tour" again.

    Ok
It's been a long time since I used one of these buses after a bad experience on one in Las Vegas (do not use the Vegas bus versions). However, this was ok. The driver was friendly and helpful. Got where I needed to go to.

Great way to learn about the city
We took this tour to get a better feel for the city and it was wonderful. Our tour guide was very informative and had some great stories to share. I came to Philadelphia a lot when I was growing up and I still learned some new things on this tour. We decided to just ride the whole circuit first to get an overview of the city which was helpful. Then we would hop on and off as we needed to. With fewer people in the wintertime the bus runs a little less frequently, but we didn't run into any major problems.

    Route change
I understand route changes because of traffic or construction, but when you are given a new stop and you go there and the bus goes to the original stop you the go to the original stop and wait another 30 minutes and see the next bus go to the new stop and have to wait another 30 minutes because the driver do not tell dispatch that the original stop is now back in business.Very disappoint in this kind of service. So total time wasted is 1 hour and 30 minutes.

    Good, but not great
It is only one bus line with several stops. 24 hour ticket is more than enough to get the full advantage/experience of this tour

We went on the Big Bus "Hop on Hop off" tour of Philadelphia on Thursday. I recommend this tour as you get a good feel of the city and see some interesting sites like, Betsy Ross' house, Paddy's Pub, The Philadelphia museum of art, and the Rodin museum to name a few. We sat upstairs and the guide pointed out some interesting facts about the city as well as reminding us to be aware of the low hanging branches.
The only negative I can see is, if you get off and go to one of the stops to get back on later, you may have to wait another 20 minutes for the next bus if people are not getting off and the bus is full.

Our family had a great experience doing this tour. We were only in Philly for a day and a half, so this was a perfect way to see a majority of the sites expediently. Our tour guide was a college student who knew ALOT about the city's history (and was really funny), so it made for an enjoyable tour. We lucked out that it was a warm, sunny day in early April to tour. You see the city and the major sites. We found it was easy to hop on/off, especially as you are allowed to ride the other company's bus as well. I recommend doing this tour your first full day in the city and do it first thing in the morning -- it was less busy. We caught the bus at the Independence Hall stop. The only thing that we found challenging was buying the tix using our mobile device. There was a glitch (maybe it was our phone) but it was a frustrating experience. Would do the tour again, and probably do one of the night tours they offer. Great experience.

Overall we had a good experience. The tour guide was knowledgeable and we enjoyed the 2 hour ride with commentary. The down side is that as the day goes on the buses fill up and you may not be able to get back on at a stop. I would recommend a one day ticket. On subsequent days buy a $5 ticket for the Philly Phlash which is a hop on hop off bus run by the city. It makes the same stops and is air conditioned. It was never too full to catch a ride on. Bottom line- book a one day tour and figure out the sights you want to see but on subsequent days, save your money and take the Philly Phlash.

I would have liked to give this a higher review but I unfortunately I had some significant challenges on Saturday November 23rd.
I booked this excursion about 1 to 2 months prior to our travel. On the day of the booked ticket I discovered there was a 1/2 marathon taking place in the city which would impact the route. I only found this out by speaking with a tourist representative in Philadelphia on this day. I was not made aware of this at time of booking nor was it posted on the website as I had checked the website the day prior as I as I usually do when I am planning for our travel activities. I was planning to use this method of transportation to get to other booked activities. We ended up walking significant distances to get to our other excursions. The route did revert to its normal route at approximately 3:00 pm that day (most of the day wasted as this excursion ends—last but from starting point by 4:30 pm).

Also not very clear markings (post signs) for Big Bus. You will see at almost all of the stops the “City Site Seeing” bus signs including a phone number to contact them—I found out after talking with people on the street that Big Bus will pick up at these “City Site Seeing” stops but I was not informed of this so it was challenging to navigate.

I actually called the number for “City Site Seeing” bus tour and they were extremely helpful—my reccommendation book with “City Site Seeing” and not Big Bus

Once we actually got on the tour at 3:00 pm, the driver and tour guide were very friendly and provided a great overview of the sites we were able to see.

Make sure you ask if all busses are running before buying this. We traveled with two families (4adults + 2 children) and thought this would be the best way to navigate the city since we only had one day to visit. Unfortunately, the busses were always full when we waited to board after getting off to visit a site and ended up wasting most of our day waiting on a bus. There was also a bigger gap in time between the busses than we were told. And this was even when we were at a stop that picked up either Big Bus or the City Tours bus (they operate together but have slightly different routes/stops). Every bus was full. So, it ended up being a huge waste of money and time and prevented us from seeing more of the city. The workers on the bus simply just said that it was no fun for them either when all the busses weren't running and if we were upset to make sure we called the number on the receipt. One tour guide used profanity in her description of the city. Do not sit inside the bus unless you like someone screaming in your ear. We had to sit inside for two of the three busses and the volume downstairs is way too loud. Our friends sat upstairs in the same trip and said it was fine. If you plan to hop on at the beginning of the route and never get off, it could be a good 1.5 hours of your day. But it did not function as a hop on/off tour as advertised and frankly ruined our day trying to see Philly.

Hi there! We appreciate you sharing your experience, even though it sounds like the tour didn't meet your expectations. We carefully track our daily sales to make sure we have the right number of buses ready for all routes. We also monitor traffic and road conditions every day to keep our Day Route running every 20 minutes. To provide a more consistent experience, we've transitioned to a recorded-commentary system instead of using live guides. We can't wait to have you back and hope your next journey is a fantastic one!

We’ve done this kind of tour all over and what always makes or breaks it is the narrator or lack thereof. Sometimes it’s just trying to plug in those worthless head phones. This time we had live narrators on every bus. The little red headed girl was so great we just stayed on her bus as long as she was there. Tipping always seems to be a question as they all ask you to tip but if you tip each time you hop in and off it all adds up. This time I only tipped the best one and tipped her well but I suspect that’s not ideal strategy.

Easy to find just down from Jefferson station, the closest SEPTA station to the main tourist centre.

A bonus is that you can ride both the main tourist bus company vehicles from the same ticket.

The price was enough but no more than you would expect for a hop on hop off bus in a major city.

While the service was on the whole really good and the drivers excellent, our tour guide called Hillary was a big negative.

To begin with she started to do a horrendous English impression after asking where we were from and hearing we were from England. I am sorry but no real English person says "Tally Ho"!!!!

She then went on to try and stir up tensions with a family who were Germany on the bus by telling us at the top of her voice "to say hello to the Germans".

As the tour continued she kept using the building of Philadelphia by Londoner Mr Penn as an excuse to say how dirty and chaotic London was / is. We aren't from London so this didn't cause offence but the woman obviously had a huge problem with the British.

We would recommend the bus tour as a great way to see the tourist attractions of Philadelphia but if you are British and Hillary is your guide, get off and get the next bus.

We went to Philly for the day. A friend who grew up in Philly said to do the hop on,hop off bus. We got off at our 1st stop and walked to our next stop. We waited for the bus for over 30 mins in the rain. We were told the buses were every 20-30 mins. We were also told we could get on any of the red buses. Not one bus came in the 30 mins so we started walking to our next stop. (which was a straight shot according to their map) And not one bus passed us on that walk which was also another 30 mins! I emailed them and got a form letter that someone would get back to me in 24 hours. We were only there for the day. I called the phone number and that person didn't seem to understand what I was saying at all. She kept saying the bus is there now. I just wanted an apology and an explanation as to where the buses were. When we finished at that stop we got on a red bus. That bus did not announce any stops. The host was more interested in his stand up act. When I saw what I thought was our stop I had to ask to be let off. After that the buses were much better but it was really a rough start. Many, many emails later....I still haven't received an explanation.

We used this as an option to offset some walking/Ubers to places we wanted to cost such as the penitentiary, Rocky statue and waterfront. It worked out well but was busy and busses were closer to every 30 minutes versus the advertised 15-20. On busy days or towards the end of the day/last bus time you might end up finding no seats available. Worked ok for us though and the narrators were mostly good (a couple were questionable) and informative. I’m not sure I would do this again though. Great if you want to start out at stop 1 and ride all the way around, but hop on and off only kind of worked when it was busy.

The tour was disappointing. The tour guide spent 25% of the time hustling the customers for tips and donations for himself and for one of the guides upcoming birthday party. Another 25% was spent laughing and talking to people on the street that he knew trying to be cool. The historical items that were supposed to be covered were lightly covered if at all.
