    An enjoyable entertaining tour
Informative friendly and very well organised. Did not overburden us with too much information but lots of quirky bits made it very entertaining

An interesting and fun heart of NYC experience
My husband , 25 year old daughter and I, who all have lots of New York experience, enjoyed the tour a lot. We learned many interesting things about this beautiful building and went to some nooks and crannies we didn't know about. Our guide Cullen was well informed, and had a friendly and pleasant style. I'd go on another tour with him.

Unique opportunity to learn about a lost New York City masterpiece!
This event was amazing! Justin has put so much work into perfecting this tour. In comparing the OLD Penn Station to the PRESENT DAY space, he provided captivating stories of Penn's history. He showed us several historic photos as well. He positioned us at many of the PRECISE SPOTS that were captured in some of these old photos. He conveyed the sense of the massiveness of the old building - its multiple levels, its height, and breadth - which we came to appreciate as Justin walked us around the outside of today's Madison Square Garden and back toward the James Farley Post office (which we visited as well). We got a glimpse of the people, the operations, and the beauty of this lost masterpiece, and a whiff of regret, too, as we learned about the disposal and whereabouts of many of its majestic remnants. Justin was very considerate too, aware that some of us might like to skip some staircases. Also, he provided each of us with a cool over-the-ear amplifying device, which enabled us to hear his comments clearly. For any history buffs, railroad buffs, or architecture buffs - this tour is a must!

    I enjoyed it
Richard was very knowledgeable about the history of Grand Central Terminal. It was nice to see the different parts of the station instead just the areas you see passing through. Our group was kinda quiet but we had a good time, plus Richard kept checking on everyone throughout the tour.

    Fun GCT tour
We had a wonderful tour with John DeSantos that was full of information even for a native New Yorker. Tourist or native this tour is worth doing with John.

    Really Great Experience
John was an excellent tour guide on the Greenwich Village Coffee Tour! My friends and I had a great time. John was both informational and fun. If you’re looking for a different experience and to learn about coffee and some insider secrets of NYC I highly recommend!

    History At Its Best
Our guide was lovely. But this tour is best suited for history buffs, or perhaps those with a special interest in trains or NYC subways. Also, be prepared for lots of stairs.

    Would highly recommend…
John was so knowledgable and captured our attention for the whole tour. I would highly recommend this tour not only for the interesting facts about grand central but it also gives a great base knowledge for the development of NY over time. John delivered the information in an entertaining way and remembered everyone’s names on the tour which was impressive.

Great inside look at Grand Central
Great behind the scenes look at Grand Central Station. The history, secret spots and beauty of the building were all featured very effectively.

    Grand experience touring GCS
Richard was very knowledgeable and GCS has been beautifully restored. Almost everything u see is original Vanderbilt. Did not know over half a million people still walk through a day, or that there is a tennis court inside. Tour uses headset radios so you don't miss a word. Went back later and tried the Oyster Bar and the fresh seafood and beer selection topped off the evening perfectly.

A chance to learn some of the history of this incredible place and the city it serves.
Excellent tour. You will learn many things you never knew even if you have gone through here daily for years. Richard was extremely informative, pleasant and well organized.

Great tour. Our guide, Riannon, was wonderful. Funny, witty, and super knowledgable. The group of 20 or so of us walked with her for about 20 blocks on and near 5th Avenue while she told us stories about the mansions as we walked. She also showed us photos of many of the famous owners of the mansions on her i-pad. I learned alot and I thought I was somewhat knowledgable anout this period in history (late 1800's-1920's). A highlight of our NYC trip.

Richard guided us on a true walking tour. We stopped briefly to get a better view of particular buildings and/or to view some of his marvelous photos of now demolished or inaccessible buildings. Then we moved on to view some more. He sprinkled history of certain families into his narrative. So, this tour would be suitable for mixed audiences with some discussion of architectural styles and some peaks inside a few remaining neighborhood gems. A lovely walk up 5th Avenue from "The Plaza" to "The Met".

We had a great time on the Guilded Age tour with Richard as a guide! He was very knowledgeable about New York City history, the stories of the ultra-wealthy families, and the details about these incredible houses. We did get to see insides of 2 of the mansions that had been turned into public spaces, so that was really amazing to see. We are locals, and learned so much about our own city- definitely recommend this tour!

Richard was very knowledgable and excellent tour guide. He told us many interesting stories of the wealthy in the Guilded Age, and sprinkled in some tidbits about the HBO Guilded Age series for the few of us who are fans of the show. I enjoyed the tour and would recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about this time period and the extravangence of the ultra wealthy.

Very good time. Richard was a wealth of knowledge and a patient, considerate guide. The tour starts at 59th and moves up 5th Avenue to the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art. The weather was perfect for the walk. The tour provides background on the history of the Gilded Age, the families, and their palatial homes. It's a great way to spend a couple of hours in the City.

Richard was a wonderful guide who brought the Guilded Age alive for us. As residents of the city for over a decade it was wonderful to learn so much new information about this part of the city. He checked in with guests throughout the tour and answered our questions with great detail. Highly recommend!!!

Like many, I love the HBO Max series Gilded Age. When I saw this walking tour was available, I jumped on it! There were about 30 of us there, and we were divided into two groups. Richard was the guide for my group. Each of us was given an ear piece to use, so that we could hear Richard very clearly. Richard absolutely knew his stuff! He started the tour with information about the Gilded Age series, so that was a thrill. His knowledge of history and architecture was both thorough and accessible...which is not always the case. The tour was an easy walk, but we covered significant ground. Several times, we were able to pop inside a building - such as the Ralph Lauren flagship men's store - to see examples of Gilded Age interior finishings. After two hours, which went like a flash, my brain felt full of fascinating information. Thank you, Richard, for a splendid tour. I can't wait to take another Untapped New York tour!

We booked this tour with Untapped New York for September 17, 2023. Our guide, Bill Shafer, was very knowledgeable about the buildings we saw and the people who occupied them with personal entertaining stories thrown in.

We met in front of the Plaza and the tour started with a history of the hotel and some of the residents. We learned about the history, society and culture of the Gilded Age and especially, “new money” vs “old money” of New York City. Mr. Shafer had some interesting stories of many of the historical figures who were rather eccentric.

My friend and I have been enthralled with the Guilded Age for years after visiting Newport, RI. We have gobbled up novels and shows and visited lots of Vanderbilt, Rockefeller, Frick ETC homes throughout the country with our husbands. When we saw this tour advertised, we knew this was for us!

We were definitely not disappointed! Our guide Richard was so knowledgeable! He also knew some secret places unknown to the general public so we could see remnants of these beautiful places. It was a long walk on a hot day, but Richard let us stop for water and sit from time to time.

I thoroughly enjoyed this tour and highly recommend it to other Guilded Age enthusiasts!
