One block south of Houston on Mulberry Street is a real treasure: a Catholic Basilica as old as the City of New York. Our tour guide Leo laid out the story in 90 minutes of entertaining detail....was he kidding when he said that he's Jewish? LoL. The tour is a little pricey, but I would recommend it to anyone interested in NYC history, architecture, etc.

So we grab a cab from Katz's deli worried that we are going to miss our tour and get there just in time to get our temperatures checked and our tickets scanned! We love the tour! Our guide was an expert and spoke loudly enough that our large group could hear him as we began outside and then moved inside. We knew some about the catholic church but appreciated the history of all of the nationalities that built lives around this old cathedral. If you get the City Pass, this is definitely a great stop and is within walking distance of Lombardi's where we walked after the tour.

This tour was a perfect way to spend a summer afternoon! Even as a native New Yorker, there were still so many things I got to learn about the city’s history. I especially appreciated the connections I could make to my own Irish Catholic roots. But whether you know a lot about NYC history and Catholicism, or nothing at all, there will be something for you to learn and take away from this tour. Our tour guide, Dan did a great job of keeping our group engaged and laughing throughout our 90-minute tour. He was extremely knowledgeable and personable, which made the experience all the better! I would definitely recommend this tour to friends and family who want to learn more about an interesting slice of New York City’s history!

We didn’t get to see the sanctuary but for a quick walk through because it’s an active church and it was closed for a wedding rehearsal. The guide was informative but dry. The tour guide can’t go in the actual catacombs with you so he tells all the stories in the entryway and you had to hunt for the graves that match the story in your own. We were in a group that I thought was quite loud and disrespectful in the actual catacombs, so that kind of ruined the vibe. This is not a good tour for kids, too slow and boring.

I booked the Old St Patrick's Catacombs by Candlelight tour as a fan of church architecture and sacred spaces, but was pleased that it ended up being so much more than just the building (or the space beneath it). Our tour guide Dan provided a fun and engaging narrative on the church, but more so it was provided in the context of its role in the neighborhood, the city, and even the nation as it focused on immigration. He was very good about taking questions too as they arose to help fill in the blanks.

I am very much a do it yourself kind of traveler, but there are times when the use of a guide make all the difference in the world. This was one of those times. If you're interested in the history of New York, the Lower East Side, immigration in America, or the book/movie Gangs of New York, it's a worthwhile experience. Highly recommend.

The history of St Patrick's (and the transition that NYC was undergoing at the time....) is truly fascinating and Dan was an OUTSTANDING tourguide - knowledgeable, captiviating and quite hilarious at times. He kept a very large and diverse group of tourists & locals fully engaged and answered all of our questions in a thorough and humorous manner. I would HIGHLY recommend this tour both if you're visiting or live in NYC.

We enjoyed this tour especially having Dan as our guide. The people who are disappointed with this tour and giving a poor review thinking it was supposed to be creepy or scary, definitely were under the wrong impression and came with different intentions.

The history of this tour is rich about religion and the different communities of NYC and how it evolved over the centuries.

Our guide Dan was very knowledgeable and interacted with his crowd and was very humorous. He had personality and really made the tour fun. He was willing to chat with you after and was happy to answer questions.

If you're looking for a shrilling, creepy haunted house adventure this tour is not it. If you're looking for education on NYC history and religion this is it. Enjoy!

This was a very informative and interesting tour! Our guide Dan was very knowledgeable and answered all the questions the group had. I thought the whole tour would be in and about the catacombs but I was wrong, not that that is a bad thing! We spent time learning about the history of New York and the conflicts between the Protestants and Catholics and Dan presented all of this information in an interesting and funny way. I highly recommend this tour, and my wife even said "I wasn't sure about the other walking tours but now I know Dan is a guide, we should do one!"

The "Catacombs by Candlelight" tour with the knowledgable and entertaining Kyle was excellent. I learned a tremendous amount about the evolving history of Little Italy and the background of St. Pat's and the Catholic Church in NYC history, exploring a treasure trove in the neighborhood. Even my friend who has lived 3 blocks away for 40 years had never been in the church (actually now a basilica, we learned) and didn't know its history! Tales of Martin Scorsese's youthful and ongoing involvement in the church and a peek INSIDE the extraordinary pipe organ were bonuses. The name of the tour is a bit of a misnomer and unnecessary - while seeing the catacombs was a special part of the 90-minute outing, they were not the only highlight for me.The "candles" did cleverly contribute to the mood, though. The tour was very well organized and my initial fear that the group of almost 30 was going to be unmanageable; fortunately it was divided into two smaller groups which worked perfectly. The guide was articulate, clearly excited about the information he had to share and happy to answer questions. Don't miss this tour! And be persistent: we tried to register online but were stopped with notice that it was full; a call to Tommy's led us to just show up at the church where we easily purchased tickets. This is not the least expensive NYC tour I've experienced but it was worth the price of admission.

My boyfriend and I were looking to do something in the city without losing an entire day or our pocketbooks. Dan did a phenomenal job walking us through the history of the city as it developed including the battle for space and land from the various Catholic, and other, populations that immigrated into NY.
We had a small tour of four of us, so the space in the actual catacombs was manageable to practice Covid distancing. About 1/2 of the tour was above ground in the church, the original St Patricks, not the Cathedral (you'll find out more on the tour), and 1/2 under the church in the catacombs. The "candlelight" is actually a manual battery-powered candle that you take with you.
An absolute Do-Again with a ton of knowledge of the city's past and present.
Make sure to note the tour is of the original St Patrick's, not the Cathedral in Mid-town.
