About the operator

- 527blytheg0 contributionsAmazing tour of NYCMy fiancé and I thought this tour was incredibly informative and a lot of fun! The tour guide was so knowledgeable and seemed very excited to pass on that knowledge. We felt like we learned so much about New York City and its history. The art you get to see is really amazing and the architecture is so unique and interesting to learn about. Highly recommend!Written August 24, 2024
- Jeremy S0 contributionsBrilliant walk and excellent guideMy wife and I (and our small dog) went on the recreated sights of the 1840s walk with Robert on a cold New York day. Nonetheless, despite the weather, we were both enthralled by the tour and the incredible knowledge Robert shared about the various landmarks of New York and how they have changed over the years. Robert is an accomplished author and historian and I seriously doubt that more than a handful of people would know as much about the history of New York as he does. Highly recommend the tour and we hope to go on another when we next have the opportunity.Written December 23, 2019
- billbA4190RS0 contributionsGreat fun, if you love architecture a definite must do!We did - Recreate the Most Popular Walking Tour of 1840 and essentially it is a SoHo Tour taking you through how the city evolved and people moved further and further north leaving some great architecture behind, lots of history and you’ll get a great understanding of NYC and how it evolved with families like the Astor’s driving history. Robert Amell was a great guide, not just informative but engaging, you’ve got to try one of his tours!Written December 6, 2019
- Murray H0 contributionsExcellent and Informative TourWalked around the lower east side, 5 points, and china town area for 2 hours, listening to the guide point out the history of the buildings and the evolution of the immigrants and tenements from the 1840's until today. Was able to actually go into an old tenement and see its construction. Highly recommend this for history buffs and architecture buffsWritten October 29, 2019

We are thrilled with the wealth of information Robert provided us with during this tour and the enthusiasm with which he imparted his in-depth knowledge of the functioning of this fascinating city. We left with our heads spinning, but that's only because we weren't able to soak up all the interesting things and unconventional sights that Robert was able to present to us. If you ever want to gain a different view of New York, this tour is highly recommended - it's worth every penny!

You think you’ve seen it all in Midtown! Well, we were wrong and you’ll be surprised too. The art, the history, the intrigues to get structures built, the families behind it all….Rob knows it all and shares it with enthusiasm and a sense of the awe and fun of NYC. The three hours raced by and we decided to take two more tours with him with our remaining two days in the City. Best use of our time we could have hoped for.
He’s a scholar with a gift for connecting dots not unlike Robert Caro. In fact, if Rob writes a book about NYC history, you’ll want to read that too?

My partner and I took this tour with Robert Amell. We were captivated with Rob's history of NYC and his detailed explanations. The tour was well-paced, with opportunities to sit down while Rob offered his excellent explanations of the architecture and artwork of the buildings. We really enjoyed the tour and felt enlightened by the experience.

A well crafted tour of Midtown Manhattan's architecture and art. Robert did an excellent job of describing midtown Manhattan building codes, open to public spaces and even private spaces. There were interesting anecdotes connected to the buildings and paintings. Robert keep the tour interesting and lively. I have to add that I grew up in New York City and never gave a thought to the interesting history of the city. Even if you are a New York or visiting from someplace else, take the tour and you'll be pleasantly surprise.

My husband and my 26 yr old son and I all enjoyed this very much. You walk in the passages that connect buildings. This is not some sort of subterranean world, just normal corridors just below the city. The guide was very knowledgeable and show us a number of places that if I lived in the city and was looking for a chill place to hang I would have returned. There is definitely some walking, but at a leisurely pace.

What a terrific walking tour this was (albeit a long tour - 3-1/2 hours - so we were tired by the end), but it was so worth every minute. Rob is enormously knowledgeable on NYC history, art installations in unexpected locations, how building codes and regulations influenced architecture. He comes fully prepared with maps and photographs illustrating his points so that it became easy to understand what we were looking at. We learned so much and are still talking about how much fun we had.

Rob was extremely knowledgeable about Manhattan. We saw some great examples of architecture and learned a lot. We’ll be viewing Manhattan buildings in a new light.

What an amazing tour - one of the best city tours I've ever taken, and I've done quite a few.
Unique, engaging, and incredibly informative - Rob is a wealth of knowledge, and seamlessly weaved together history, architecture, urban planning, art, economics - the full picture! Genuinely nice, patient, and easy going - rare qualities in someone with his level of expertise. We especially appreciated the fact that he was willing to conduct the tour with just the 2 of us, even after the third person in our group had to cancel last moment. Also worth noting - the tour is incredible value for the money.
We fully intend to take his other tours whenever we are back in NYC - thanks again Rob!

Super interesting tour that covered a swath of Midtown I have visited numerous times before, but this helped me see it in a whole new way. My sons, 18 and 16, found it fascinating too. We learned the architectural history of buildings around us, the history of the city and viewed a great mixture of art in public and private spaces. Small group, super knowledgeable guide, I highly recommend!
