- Meet your guide in downtown Manhattan for a brief introduction to Prohibition-era New York. At the first speakeasy of the tour, enjoy a craft cocktail (own expense) as you listen to the history of the city’s clandestine bars and breweries. This tour guarantees you breeze past long lines to make the most of the evening. Going with a local guide is a necessity, as most speakeasy entrances are hidden or unmarked as they would have been in the 1920s. Follow the guide to bars that even locals can’t find, in back alleys, through phone booths, behind a psychic shop, or past doors marked “No Entrance.” By the end of the tour, leave feeling more in the know than most New Yorkers.

About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- anthonycF5755BK0 contributionsDo not book !!!!!!!!!! Cancelled without noticeCancelled without notice: They left us standing outside a derelict Burger joint that was in the process of being repaired in an extremely unsafe, grubby, dangerous and quite frightening part of New York. We waited for over three-quarters of an hour, and during that time, I was offered drugs to buy, and accosted by two beggars who hounded us by following us down the street asking for $2.00 and 0.50 cents, respectively, Their ridiculous telephone systems are a disgrace. The information they relay is a lie. The recorded message suggested your customers should text to get a quicker response—LIE...! I texted several times and had no response!Written March 14, 2025
- melissaNYC820 contributionsGreat Tour!Highly recommended. Lyonel gave us a great tour of three speakeasies and was so knowledgeable about the history that surrounds them. My family and I had the best time!Written October 9, 2024
- jamesjT7159BL0 contributionsScam CompanyIn an industry filled with clowns, Alex’s Tours manages to be the biggest joke of all. I took the East Village Speakeasy tour before going on to work with the company and it’s the stupidest decision I’ve made in my seven years of tour guiding. In a best case scenario, you’ll get the founder who will mumble his way through remembering what he saw in the Ken Burns prohibition documentary. In a worst case scenario, you’ll get someone who hasn’t been shadowed and was given a jumbled script with no structure that includes a sizable chunk just describing what mash distilleries are. Riveting stuff from a man who refuses to pay his employees. On top of that, guides will sometimes get next to no notice that two of the stops are closed and you have to learn two new bars on the spot. If you’re a tour guide, avoid this company like the plague. There are better paying companies that aren’t going to waste your weekends for $100. If you’re a guest, you can just google these places (Please Don’t Tell, Barbershop, and The Back Room) and go yourself instead of enabling a pathological liar.Written April 19, 2024
- Q-bert1370 contributionsWonderful Lower East Side Speakeasy TourThis tour was a lot of fun and a really different experience in NYC. I loved exploring the LES and checking out all the secret locations that I never would have been able to find on my own. I would definitely recommend this for a fun and different night out. Our tour guide Lyonel was a lot of fun and very knowledgeable. Definitely a must do in the city!Written February 1, 2024

- RandJ19900 contributionsThe most informative and FUN tour! We’ve now completed each of the speak easy tours offered by Alex’s Tours. Each of them were distinctly different and equally enjoyable. The fascinating details on the history of prohibition and mixology make the evening so interesting, and each guide is very knowledgeable and personable. The different establishments each have unique features but share in common that they make the most high quality cocktails! I recommend the tours no matter what time of year you visit NYC. Alex really has put together a top notch batch of tours throughout the city!Written December 1, 2019
- Coleen_Fi0 contributionsEast Side Prohibition TourHighly recommend. Our group of 10 had the most wonderful time on the Lower East Side Speakeasy tour. Bridget was a wonderful tour guide. Such an interesting tour and everyone in our group loved how each of the Speakeasy's was hidden - be it a back stairway behind a restaurant, down a private alley to a 'back door' entrance, or through a gallery. Be adventurous with the cocktails. Most in our group ordered different cocktails. Have to recommend that you get get cigar-infused scotch drink - just for the presentation alone. The server uses a small torch on a lemon peel to bring out flavor. Really fun experience. Highly recommend.Written July 1, 2019
- LollysLook0 contributionsSpeakeasyThis was our second speakeasy tour with the company. This time we got Alex. We learned a lot of history and got entry to some very cool spots for some really interesting cocktail concoctions.Written April 18, 2019
- Brooke N0 contributionsGreat tourMy mom and I were in New York for a few days and booked the East Village tour. We met in daylight at the entrance of Thompkins Square Park, nothing sketchy or felt unsafe. We went inside three speakeasies and ordered drinks, and walked past a few others where Alex provided info and history on. Alex is very knowledgeable and provided a lot of interesting facts as well as good insight on great places to check out while we're in town. Definitely recommend!Written March 29, 2019

- jvgolden0 contributionsNYC East Village Walking TourWe enjoyed the tour. We even saw a celebrity or two. Though Alex is very knowledgeable I found that he added a bit too much detail into his spiel and had to speak fast to do so. It was hard to hear him in the noisy bars. Though we never were sure of the place we were in it was a good time. We wish he could have told given mus some pertinent info about each place before entering. Besides the first place, where we could order food was unclear. Alex was late to the tour due to not accounting for train delays. We all did feel left hanging for a half hour. Also, though dress code was made clear, Alex showed up in sneakers, and jeans. -Kinda a downer for us since we made an effort to dress nicely; I mentioned not being sure of the bar names w're visiting and their addresses and Alex said that he provides a list of the places to us as part of the tour. I waited several weeks after the tour and recei ed nothing. I tested him for the information 4 times. The first was ignored. the second he had me verify who I was, a week later my third text was ignored. Finally another week later on my fourth text when I asked him to please flooow-through on sending the list he'd promised he'd send, he tested me the names of a few of the places we'd been with no address. Not to get caught-up with expectations, but I guess I expected a nice complete list in email with addresses and no reluctance in sending it. Not ure if we'll do another tour..Written November 1, 2018
- wcurrie0 contributionsGreat Diversion from the Regular Tourist Sites. We recently participated in the West Village Speakeasy Tour. At first it was a little confusing as the meeting place location changed at the last minute, and we couldn't attend one of the Speakeasys as they had a private function. However, the remainder of the tour was a total blast! The guide was an Art/History Major, so he had volumes of information on prohibition (pro's and con's) and stories about various players. It was well worth the fee. The drinks at some of the Speakeasys were a little costly, but each location had a menu of extraordinary mixology, and the environments were just sooo unique. There is some walking involved so I would recommend comfortable shoes, and bundle up if you're going in cool weather. It was a great evening!Written October 28, 2018
- _stevennitka0 contributionsEast Village speakeasy tourMy wife and I had a great time with a knowledgable guide (Alex), and some wonderful people. We were led to interesting places we wouldn't have found on our own and had several well prepared cocktails. We highly recommend the tour and hope to go on others in the future. We bought our tickets on Groupon and although our time frame had expired, Alex was kind enough to extend it. We can't say enough about him or his enterprise.Written July 29, 2018
- HarryRCT0 contributionsWest Village Tour Just OKWe tried a couple of times to book this tour but were unable to because they didn't have the required minimum of six people. We ended up doing the tour on Memorial Day since Alex said that day would be no problem getting the required number of people. We were supposed to visit six places but ended up seeing only four since the others were closed, which Alex should have known and passed on to his clients. The speakeasies were basically bars with the theme of a real speakeasy. There wasn't any requirement to buy drinks which was just as well since they tended to be overpriced, even for Manhattan. Our tour guide was pretty knowledgeable and did his best to make the tour enjoyable.Written June 2, 2018

I trusted Alex Tours to kick off my Fiancé 30th birthday celebration and we had a great experience!
Communication: I booked a party of 9 initially and one of my family members had to back out. I contacted Alex before the 24 hour mark and he immediately texted me confirming that he would reimburse me and shortly after my entire refund was posted.
Professional: Our tour guide, Lyonel, was at the given location early and safely guided us toward all three speakeasy bars. He was knowledgeable, respectful and personable.
Experience: Whether you are local or visiting the city this is a unique experience that I would recommend if you love a good cocktail with some storytelling and exploring some of NYC's hidden gems.

This tour was one of the most amazing tours we’ve ever done! It made the prohibition era truly come alive. Lily was an exceptional guide who communicated the history in both an informative and entertaining way! The three speakeasy’s were all very different so it was good to get a taste of the old and the modern. Although the cocktails were on the pricey side, they were absolutely delicious so made it worth it. Would highly recommend!!!

Alex covered so much history in a fun and entertaining way with tidbits of knowledge you’d otherwise miss out on. He needs to write a book full of these historical stories accompanied by his jokes and cocktail info. Wonderful and highly recommended experience!

This was a fantastic tour! Lily was incredibly interesting and informative and we so enjoyed our evening with her. We were the only 2 people who turned up for this tour but that did not affect our enjoyment or Lily’s presentation. Her passion for history is remarkable and we learnt so much about NY and prohibition. All whilst sitting in the best hidden venues drinking fantastic cocktails. What’s not to like?!

The communication was awful. I tried to confirm via phone multiple times (leaving a text not a vm) as requested. I also sent two emails to confirm. Heard nothing. My husband texted - heard nothing. This went on for a seven day period prior to the tour. Because of a another unfavorable review I was worried the tour wasn’t going to happen. We decided to go to the meet up place but had a backup plan if no one showed. 15 min prior to the start I did get a text from Alex from a different phone number than the one I had from the booking. He said our guide would be there in 30 min (so 15 min late) and gave me the guide’s phone number. We messaged the guide who changed the pick up location forcing us to back track 10 min. It was a heat index of 105 so that sucked.
The guide was… interesting. He started talking and never stopped. Only made eye contact with my husband. Did not respond at all to us trying to direct the conversation to anything we found remotely interesting. He did give us a long history about prohibition etc but it went on and on and on to the point of ridiculousness. We couldn’t wait to get out of there.
We have gone on food and culture tours in many cities. Some are better than others but all overall have been positive experiences. This was not so great. I’d be very hesitant to recommend it.

We are sorry if you were not pleased by the communication prior, tour guide or the experience. We have been recently undergoing updates on our communication overall and increasing the standards of the tour guides we supply on Alex’s Tours. Please know we have accessed these unfavorable reviews and had since to let go of one of tour guide due to this. We appreciate your constructive feedback and would like to exceed a courtesy tour with Alex. Feel free to email us at support@alextours.com. Thank you.

To avoid
Very poorly organized
On time at the meeting point at the 1st bar: not the slightest welcome or details about the evening
Only choice order a drink
Not able to identify “the organizer” during the 30 minutes during which we saw people marching by without knowing if they were part of the group or not!

We met at our location and headed to our first speakeasy down a narrow alleyway. I am so glad our tour guide Madelyn was with us to show us the way. We had our drinks served in coffee cups and they were delicious! We listened to Madelyn talk about Prohibition and the history of the building and then we walked to our next stop. We went into a burger place and then went inside a bank vault to go upstairs to a super cozy fun bar. The bartender would make whatever you wanted to drink. We again listened to more from Madelyn and then we headed into our last stop in the back of an art gallery. It was very hip and drinks were expensive, but lots of fun! I did this tour with Alex in 2018 and had lots of fun and that is why I came back. In 2018 we did 4 stops, but Madelyn said the 4th stop was no longer as everyone has found out about it and it is way to crowded. I would have loved one more stop, but we still had a great night. Madelyn even recommended having dinner at the Thai Dinner(I am gluten free) and it was a great place and the food was delicious. We will do the tour again the next time we are in town. Thanks for a fun evening!

Lackluster- flour tour guide confirmed via next and offered to start the tour 30 minutes early. We arrived at the earlier time but the rest of the group didn’t arrive early so we ended up waiting the 30 minutes anyway. There were 10 in our group. The tour guide didn’t really engage the whole group while walking except to give directions. We went to three speakeasy’s. The host didn’t make an effort for ice breakers so the couples mostly chatted with one another. The host spoke for a few minutes at each place but mostly it was just me and my friend chatting. We had reserved seats at 2 of the 3 places. Having to stand at the last place after so much walking wasn’t the best, we drank the drink we ordered and left. I feel like we could have done this tour ourselves with just a list of addresses.

Fun bars/speakeasy's with strong drinks and an educational history tour! Lionel was our tour guide and did a great job explaining the history of the prohibition era. The last bar had a wonderful surprise that really topped off our night. We also taught Lionel some Canadian history of the Sh*ts Creek motel, Ryan Gostlin and Rachel McAdams 😉 Met some great people on the tour as well.

Lyonel did a wonderful job with this tour! He was very knowledgeable and came prepared with pictures to make the experience even better. We went to 3 places and that was plenty because you spend about an hour at each one and the drinks were pretty strong (for me, anyway). As another review says, the other people in the tour make it even more special. It was a relatively small group, but each person was from a different place. I loved the diversity! Everyone was so friendly.

My husband and I were the only ones on the tour with our guide (There was a big snowstorm that night and the other people couldn't make it) It was magical and delightful!
