      Interesting and informative.
Our guide Peggy was helpful and gave us a fund of information I didn’t know about Harlem. She took us through the history of Harlem in the days of the settlers through different waves of immigrants, to the Harlem renaissance and up to the present day. We visited a church to understand more the Harlem Gospel tradition.

      Absolutely fantastic
Absolutely fantastic. A highlight. Choir of 12 just 5 feet away. Great voices and harmony. A cappella. And they sang for a long time. They pass a collection box at the end of the concert. They deserve a very good tip, at least. The bus tour was better than I expected, and our guide, Peggy Taylor, was also fantastic.

The pick-up point for the tour is 690 8th Ave - there was a tour rep at the door and our group of around 40 waited on the sidewalk for the luxury coach which arrived promptly at 9am. We drove to the Apollo theatre, left the coach for 10 mins or so and took a few pics. We then drove to the 145th St area to check out the Hamilton building and our guide provided background to it's history. A short stroll through sunny Harlem took us back to the coach and we then went to the church to listen to the Gospel choir who were amazing. They sang for around an hour, lots of hand clapping by the choir and audience. The choir members were kind enough to allow our group to pose with them for a few pics and answer any question after they finished singing. Our guide was knowledgeable and spoke in English and French and the driver expertly and safely navigated the coach through the snarled up Manhattan traffic. The traffic congestion into and out of Midtown Manhattan meant the tour lasted nearly 4 hours. A great experience. Note: there were lavatories at the church for all to use. We also had to wear face coverings when inside the church.

I gave 1 star because you cannot leave none this was horrible
This was $175 a PERSON ( $350 a couple) , and we were told that we would be taken by a bus from the meeting place on 8TH Avenue near 43RD street to Sylvia's at 126TH Street for dinner and be given a tour on the way by a knowledgeable tour director...from Sylvia's we were told that the bus would go to the Cotton Club...an historic site...this was in the beginning of December and traffic was heavy...we were supposed to be there by 7PM sharp....at 6:20 we were concerned that we might be delayed in holiday traffic and called them...we said it looked like we could be there at 7:15...they said they would not wait past 7...that is understandable...so we parked the car and ran the rest of the way arriving at just before 6:50...a little more than 10 minutes early...only to be told that they had left without us ( a party of 6) 5 minutes earlier.....they told us they went by subway...because there were only anther 5 people on the trip they were taking the subway instead of getting a bus...and that the leader had taken our subway passes with her.....we persisted and did get them to give us passes, but they had no idea where the subway station was...they gave us the cell# for the group leader, whom we called several times, but she was not answering her phone...she finally did call back about 45 minutes later with no explanation for leaving without us...dinner was ok...not bad, but not good either...from there we were to be driven to the Cotton Club...however we were told that the Cotton Club was not the destination for this trip...that we were going across the street to a different Jazz Club...this in itself was a big disappointment, as the only reason we went on this was to go to the Cotton Club...so the walk across the street turned out to be about 6 blocks away in 27* weather...I do have to say that the "tour guide" did point out 2 protestant churches that had been Jewish temples years ago..that was the extent of the tour...so now we arrive at a place that the Health Department should have condemned...the place was best described as disgustingly filthy ..the bathrooms were not usable, dead bugs on the flat surfaces and layers of dried out spilled drinks and sticky stuff all over... the musicians were stoned out and constantly going outside to smoke pot the smell of which was drifting inside the joint and their music sucked..there was a singer who seemed to forget the words to the songs that she was singing. the best entertainment was some drunken customer who did some karaoke for 1 song.....we were supposed to get drinks..but they did not have anything.that I asked for ( iced tea, tomato juice, club soda) ..and I would not have had anything to eat or drink from any dish or utensil in that place any way .....a bus did show up to drive us back downtown, but the driver did not seem to know where he was going ....on the way downtown the guide did point out a place where she thought that some event that she could not remember had taken place...as you can imagine ...I would never recommend this trip or the company ..I do not like to leave a negative review, but we did call the company to discuss at least a partial refund..as the trip was not as described verbally or its written information...they would not hear of it...This was so bad that I will be reporting them to the Dept. of Consumers Affairs.Clear case of overcharging and bait and switch

      Gospel tour NYC
Wonderful experience. The choir and the church members could not have been more gracious and welcome. Each member of the choir is extremely talented and passionate about the music. A highlight of my visit and I have been to NYC many times. Our guide Anthony was a life time New Yorker who was a wealth of information and easy to hear and understand. Enjoy!

      Harlem Gospel Tour Wednesday
Very interesting- Anthony is a knowledgeable and fun tour guide! The Gospel Choir is not a professional choir, so don’t expect too much there; although it was moving to see the dedicated singers (in a rehab program). You learn a lot about the history and present of Harlem.

      Amazing Harlem Gospel Tour
This is a must for anyone visiting New York . Our guide was so engaging and lives and breathes this vibrant and beautiful part of the city. I am not a religious person myself but you don’t need to be to be moved and to understand the depth of feeling within this close community. I highly recommend if you can include this on any trip to New York you will experience the realness of New York. Jill Australia 🇦🇺

      Harlem tour
An interesting tour with guide Anthony who had personal knowledge of the Harlem district and gave an interesting and informative commentary on the history of Harlem. The church service at the end given by the gospel singers was quite good. Be prepared to give a donation into the collection plate. Tour was around 3-4 hours.

Harlem Sunday Morning Gospel Tour - PHENOMENAL
Firstly, let us say that our Tour Guide Anthony, was without a doubt, the best tour guide we have ever dealt with. His knowledge, assistance, patience, sense of humour, and passion for what he does was an absolute highlight. We are not religious followers. However the church we attended was full of joy, love, warmth, and a welcome to all. The gospel singing was simply a “goosebump” experience. Incredibly beautiful, inspiring and moving. The rest of the tour (including a visit to the Apollo Theater) was fantastic. Highly, HIGHLY recommended. Thank you Anthony for a brilliant half-day tour.

I don't even know what I expected of this tour but I am really glad we booked it. I assumed it would be a smallish church with a small choir and it was. The tour before the church service was excellent. I learned a lot about the area thanks to Mahalia. She did an excellent job speaking in both English and French! We went to a small church and it was such an authentic, moving experience for us. The ladies I ran into that were attending there were so welcoming and kind. The singing was very good and up lifting. We left after the worship part was over and off we went to The Cotton Club. We were entertained by a talented Gospel/Jazz trio. Again, I was moved by some of the songs and others were so up lifting. Before I knew what had happened, I was up dancing in a Conga line! The food was very good and hot. They were putting it out when we got there. It was a great day and a very nice way to wind up our trip!

The actual church part was great. The bus tour with limited views was boring and went way too long. Better to spend more time at the church than pay a fortune for the padding either side of the church visit. When we did stop to look at a site it was drop dead boring.

Allen was a fantastic host and tour guide. Extremely knowledgeable with factual information about how influential the original residents of Harlem had an impact on the world. I felt so proud. The only big criticism I have, out of Allen's control, is that the Brunch spot literally did not clean the barhrooms AT ALL from the night before. Disgusting. The food was delicious, but the bathrooms spoiled my appetite 😒

This was the Sunday morning tour on Christmas eve, which included a trip to a gospel church service and brunch at Sylvia's, a soul food restaurant. We waited half an hour outside in very cold weather and then had a coach tour, which was adequate.

The gospel "service" was not really a service but a show - not a very good one- put on for us. There were no hymns or sermon and the highlight was a group of people running and swirling to recorded music, with colored fabric in their wake. Beforehand the guide told us that this was going to be an uplifting, authentic and joyful experience. Afterwards he admitted that we didn't really attend the service but just the "warm up", as he put it. Apparently the church gets a per capita fee for everyone that the tour brings in. The church had the good sense to take collection at the beginning, before we knew what was coming.

Next was Sylvia's and our guide rhapsodized about soul food and its therapeutic effects. It was so obviously disingenuous that it was offensive. The food was OK but we were seated together at one end of the restaurant, away from the other patrons. The staff barely spoke to us or smiled while they brought the food and took away our plates. I certainly didn't feel welcome and could not wait to get out of there.

This tour is a bad way to visit Harlem. One would be better off to simply attend a church service and put the price of the tour in the collection plate.

This was a great way to see the real Harlem and an authentic Harlem Church Service. The tour leaves from just behind Times Square on a very comfortable coach and our guide, Anthony, was a real New Yorker who had lived most of his life in Harlem and his local knowledge as well as his knowledge of New York history and even what movies were filmed where, made this an amazing trip. If you want a little insight into the real Harlem and to experience a genuine Harlem Church service (I was sceptical and thought this might be a little fake - it really wasn’t) then this is well worth it. We didn’t do the Sunday brunch buffet so can’t comment on this. Thanks Anthony for all your top tips and advice about NYC generally as well as being a great guide for this tour. 5 stars ⭐️

Dear Hook911, We so appreciate your feedback and recommendation of our Harlem Gospel tour. Harlem Spirituals has been organizing tours to the Harlem neighborhood for over 30 years. Our itineraries incorporate history, culture and as for the church, we want visitors to experience an authentic worship service within the community. Thank you for taking the time to share such kind words about your experience. Best regards, Erika Elisabeth Harlem Spirituals Inc/ New York Visions

The bus tour to Harlem with Anthony's guiding and excellent information was very well received. He knew a lot and he communicated it in a pleasant way. However the church and supposedly gospel visit was not what I expected. There we a handful of locals in the church and at least 4 your groups of 20 people each so the tourists wag out numbered the congregation. The quality of the singing was very poor. Shouting and screeching more than singing. I have heard beautiful gospel music before, admittedly not from Harlem or from this Pentecostal church hall, and the singing and music we heard 24 Nov was unrecognisable. Suggest providing the tourists with earplugs so the decibels don't damage the ears. It felt like being at a very loud Rock concert. Real gospel voices don't require a lot of accompaniment. Very disappointed. The bus your was great but the gospel experience a disaster. Real tourist trap.

Dear RobbynaS, Thank you for taking the time to share feedback on your recent tour. While we are happy that you enjoyed the tour content, we understand that the quality of signing did not meet your expectations. However, what we don't agree with, are your truly disparaging comments referring to the Sunday church service as a " real tourist trap". The churches that welcome our groups allow us to experience their authentic worship services. The choirs are comprised of real people; congregants who volunteer their time to express the word through song. The point of this portion of our tour is for visitors to know more about the important role of the black church historically within the community. This is not meant to be a show put on for tourists but an opportunity for guests to experience how the congregation worships and the great joy in which they serve. Cordially, Erika Elisabeth Vice president Harlem Spirituals / New York Visions
