- nicholef5280 contributionsFantastic day at the zooThe first thing we did was hop on the bus! We saw most of the zoo this way, and were able to identify areas we wanted to visit on foot. We ad an amazing lunch at Albert's Restaurant, and grabbed soft serve upstairs afterward. We took the aerial tram in the late afternoon and it offered fantastic views of the zoo and balboa park. We ran out of time to see everything we wanted (this zoo is huge), but felt like it was an an excellent day nonetheless.Written December 10, 2024

My mom commented on how clearly we could understand him and the information he provided was very interesting. We took the bus a week prior and thought he was really good. I recommend going early in the morning as most animals were up and moving about. We saw so many animals on the bus and on foot.Written December 8, 2024

Only thing that I would change is the map is very confusing in the lost forest alot of different levels. We got confused on how to get to certain things.Written December 7, 2024
- Adventurer8014560 contributionsBeing Your Own Food and DrinksI enjoyed most of the enclosures, though I am amazed that the enclosures for the bears and several other animals are still as small as when I was a child. The tour guide on the bus was fantastic. She was entertaining and knowledgeable and passionate about conservation. I appreciate that the bus is included in the ticket price. Food, drinks and memorabilia are shockingly expensive, especially after coming from the zoos in Europe. The cost seems prohibitive for many families and detracts from the experience of a visit. I have a membership but can’t see myself purchasing anything in the zoo. Honestly, I had a much better experience in the zoos in The Netherlands and they were way more affordable.Written December 5, 2024

We decided to switch things up and visit on the 4th of July. We bought our tickets ahead of time so entering was not a problem. The crowd was minimal which was nice. Portions of the zoo remained closed due to COVID. We spent approximately 6 hours here. This included restroom breaks, dining in at an on-site restaurant, Albert's, and periodic breaks. We enjoyed not rushing. There were a few uphill areas as well as downhills. I wore my garmin watch for fun. We walked a total of six miles throughout the day. We did not have small kids but if we did, I would definitely encourage a wagon or maybe renting one of the electric chairs. Also, if you would like to dine-in, I would recommend Albert's. Be sure to make a reservation via the Open table app. I would like to return in the future when everything is in full operation. Overall great experience!

We visited mid week. Parking wasn’t an issue.
We purchased the two day pass (spending one day at the Safari Park and the other at the main Zoo). The two day pass saved us some money. It also helped us enter the park without having to wait in a line.
The initial entry area was overcrowded but things (and people) thinned out once we moved further into the park.
As with the Safari Park the food & beverages were way over priced. Thankfully we brought in our own bottles of water. Zoo staff filled up water bottles with ice for free (which we appreciated).
This is a large facility with lots to see. We did quite a bit of walking.

Great zoo, that you need at least 2 days to see everything. Lots of animals in interesting habitats and settings. Getting around is a bit of a challenge. The zoo map is difficult to follow, even for an experienced map user. You get a good workout, but it’s worth it. Food is a bit pricey, but good. If I lived in the area, I’d become a member.
The “Animals in Action” special event is pricey ($104 per) but is worth every penny. Outstanding way to spend an hour with the animals and a very knowledgeable staff. My granddaughter and I got to see up close, feed, and pet a variety of animals large and small. We fed flamingos, and, yes, a rhino. We saw a cheetah and small leopard up close on a leash. We pet a zebra and a small marsupial about the size of a muskrat.
In many ways, this zoo was like a theme park: I.e., Animal Kingdom at Disney World.

We went to the zoo on a Thursday in early June. We were there just a bit before the gates opened and the first hour we were there felt like our own private zoo. I studied the map before we went and I'm glad I did as there are so many trails and I wanted to avoid a lot of backtracking. I saw another review that said to stay to the right in the morning, which was great advice as the left side of the park has a lot more shade. We started up Treetops Way to see the orangutans and the aviary, then up to the Asian Passage and the Northern Frontier. The Elephant Odyssey and African Rocks. Looped down Center Street and at 10:55 we were hungry so we ate lunch at Sydney's Grill. The line started getting longer at about 11:00 so it was good timing for us. The we looked at the koalas and the walked the Urban Jungle loop. Still had some time to kill before Animals in Action at 1:00, so we walked over to the reptile and turtle exhibit and the hummingbirds and komodo dragons.
Animals in Action was AWESOME! We saw a clouded leopard, a cheetah and another animal I don't remember the name of up close. We fed a rhino and flamingos and got to pet a zebra. Highly recommend!
After that, we did the monkey trail, hippo trail and tiger trail. Left the park a little after 3. It was a lot of walking and was getting more crowded and hot as the day went on. I'm so glad we were there early in the morning. The volunteers in the red shirts are all so helpful and kind. We never rushed and took our time and had a great day!

The zoo is the best one I have ever visited but be prepared for LOTS of walking. There are shuttles for those who need it but we sucked it up and just walked. We did cheat a bit and took the gondola up to the top and walked downhill part of the way so that helped. So many animals and I have never seen such alert, active animals in a zoo. We we there the entire day and could have spent more time there if we had it.
The Safari Park was great as well but be prepared there is also a lot of walking between exhibits whereas at the zoo you are at least seeing a lot of animals on your whole walk. We spent about 6.5 hours there and almost saw everything. The Africa tram was neat and informative, an a nice 25 min off our feet. The kangaroo area was awesome since you are just walking in there with them. We saw one with a joey in the pouch and it was sticking its head out off and on. Just amazing! Another favorite was the platypus since it is the only pair in the world outside of Australia. We could have spend hours watching the gorillas. They were so active and playful and just seemed happy. We did spend extra and do a safari tour for an hour where we took a truck into the savannah area. That was well worth the extra money and we got a good amount of time with the giraffes right at our truck, as well as seeing some female rhinos from Africa that are not on display as they are part of a breeding program.

Incredible family trip! We were able to go to the zoo one day and the safari park the next! We spent about 6 hours at the zoo and 5 hours at the safari park. Food was way better than we expected for “zoo food”. Definitely recommend getting to the parks as soon as they open to beat the crowds but also to see the animals when they are most active. Our 15 month old was able to nap in the stroller at both locations although the safari park was definitely less crowded so she napped much better. At the safari park, make the Africa tram one of the first things you do as we saw the wait time climb up to 60 minutes throughout the day. And bring your walking shoes! Over 15,000 steps both days! Overall a great experience.

We enjoyed both parks and spent about 3 hours at each. The tram ride at the Safari park was informative and fun. This was included in the ticket price. At the zoo we rode the double decker bus when we first arrived which helped us navigate what we wanted to see. This was included in the ticket price as well as the sky tram. These rides gave us a chance to rest our feet and legs and experience the parks. We felt it was easy to do both parks in a day but we didn’t have children with us. It would have been tiring for little ones to do both in the same day.

Both the zoo and the safari park were truly outstanding. We did the bus tour which is included in the ticket price and it provided a GREAT overview of the zoo and location of attractions and animals. This is great if you have limited time (less that a FULL day) to see either. A great thing is lot of the money earned by the zoo and park go back into their animal conservation programs. Kids, teen, and all totally enjoyed both and had good experiences. Also very educational. Both are must see for all family member. The only negative for both parks is the fact that is was HOT and a number of animals were hiding where it was cool. Have done them before and will do again.

We spent one day at the zoo and one day at the Safari Park. We had a great time at both places. We spent about 6 hours at the zoo and saw everything we wanted to see. We were going to use the "hop on hop off" bus but wound up walking everywhere The map you can get (free) at the entrance is essential and helpful.
We took the Wildlife Safari at the Wild Animal Park. You get into the back of a flatbed truck (has a shade over the top) and are driven around the inside of the park. Our narrator was absolutely great and we found out at the end of the trip that it was his first time!! We learned a lot about the animals and plants and his interactions with the kids were fun and interesting for them. Many, many chances for up close photos of the animals!
The Wild Animal Park is huge. After we got off the regular tram ride we realized we were as far from the exit as we could get and we were tired (did the zoo the day before). Fortunately they had an ADA shuttle that will pick you up at a designated spot (there are 4 of these in the park) and take you back toward the exit. We gratefully rode to within a quarter mile of the exit.
The weater was very hot - 94 degrees. We learned that the Snow Cones at the Safari Park were fabulous and helped rehydrate us. We managed to share several of them throughout the day! Don't miss this great treat!

We visited the zoo and various other attractions in the San Diego area and we unanimously agreed that the zoo was the best experience. We spent an entire day at the zoo and there was so much to see and do that we stayed until closing. It was fun to observe the animals. There were numerous playgrounds for the kids to burn off a little extra energy. When we were feeling a bit tired, we hopped on a tour bus. We were fortunate because it was a relatively cool day and most of the animals were out and about in their enclosures. Fortunately, we wore good walking shoes because we walked nearly 10 miles throughout the day. The price of food was a little on the expensive side but the zoo is a non-profit so all of the money spent in the zoo goes toward the animals and conservation. The people working at the zoo were very helpful and friendly. We would definitely go often if we lived in the area.

Do I have to visit both park at the same day or can I split the visit over to days?

You actually have a year to use the two days after purchasing the pass, I believe. Double check the fine print.
Both such wonderful places!

You can buy a combi ticket if your planning on doing both and save a bit of money. The zoo is in Ballboa Park in San Diego, the Safari park is about 12 miles outside Escondido which is someway north of San Diego. We went by car actually stayed in Escondido to give us an early start for the park.
