      Zoo and animals
Nice walk and enjoyed the jeep tour at Safari park the food available is scarce. Would like a nicer choice go when not hot animals more active.

      San Diego Zoo is wonderful!!
Start with a map of the Zoo then take the free bus ride around the zoo to get your bearings. Check out the times of certain feedings etc so you don't miss seeing these animals. We were glad we bought the 2 day pass as the Zoo is so big that you need two days to see it all. There are numerous cafes and restaurants around the grounds to eat or just enjoy a snack. Remember to take water, a shady hat, comfortable clothes and shoes and your camera.

San Diego Zoo still one of the best Zoos.
This was my second visit to the zoo, the first in 2007 when my two kids were younger. Still one of the best zoos I have ever visited. Although the park is quite hilly the enclosures are more natural than other zoos. The pandas were visiting from China and are always funny and fascinating.

Expensive, lots of walking, but lots of animals you won't see elsewhere!
Visiting the San Diego Zoo was at the top of my bucket list while visiting the area. It was a hot day, however, the entire zoo is completely shaded with botanical gardens and trees. This was a pleasant surprise while battling the California heat and was beautiful to look at (I took a ton of photos of the plants and flowers as we walked by). Some habitats were a bit smaller than I'd expect, but others were much better than I've seen elsewhere. The panda exhibit was the current headliner, as it required free timed tickets to avoid standing in a very long line. The experience was really lackluster, as we were herded in like cattle and made to stay in a constant walk, so there isn't a good opportunity to admire the panda while walking by. He happened to be sleeping at the time we were there, so it would have been nice to be able to check back at another time without the hassle of the lines or tickets. In other words, I don't think the tickets are necessary and feel letting people come and go on their own time would be preferred. Speaking of tickets, I think the entrance fee is "wildly" overpriced. The air and ground trams were a nice break to sit and enjoy the view. The Safari was a bit of a different story. There is rarely any shade and a ton of talking between exhibits. There were a couple times that we took shortcuts across the grass, because the walking lanes were unnecessarily windy at times (great for those who need declines/inclines for strollers and wheelchairs. Basically, a set of stairs going down the middle (like the one near the splash zone for kids) would be a nice addition in other areas, too. It was a miserably hot day, so more misting areas or air conditioned shops throughout the park would have been welcomed. The Safari tram was the highlight! We arrived at the tram about 2pm and walked right on with no line! The safari habitats are huge and impressive. The other highlight was the tiger! The glass is often smudged and full of reflections, making it almost impossible to get a great photo (like the beautiful lioness), but the tiger was on full display, pacing in plain view and the glass was clean! I got some amazing shots! And I have to also mention the platypus, which is apparently the only one in the world outside of Australia, so he was worth the visit alone, as well as the albino wallaby! Overall, both the zoo and safari parks are worth a visit, but if you only had one day or can't handle the heat or don't like the extra walking, stick with just the zoo. Both parks need better signage, because we (and many others) got lost easily in certain areas, so we often had to team up with strangers to figure out where to go. The habitats at our local zoos (Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, and Akron), typically have plaques with information about the specific animal you are looking at, including their names, birth year, relationship to the other animals, etc. This was missing here. They did, however, have a volunteer working at nearly every exhibit, so we could ask these questions (we learned about Jessica the gorilla, for example). Finally, I collect shot glasses and I got one at the zoo that was designed only for the Zoo, but the gift shops at the safari do not offer shot glasses with designs for only the Safari. You can buy one for just the Zoo and one for the Zoo and Safari combined. This is knit-picking, but hoping someone in marketing maybe sees this and realizes they're missing something that may have been overlooked. I declined getting a second shot glass. Aside from my comment about the entry fee being too expensive, I was confused why parking at the zoo was free, but there was a charge for the safari. If I return to the area, I may visit again, depending how expensive the tickets become.

      Plan ahead
If you think it will be crowded, yes. Yes, it will be. This Zoo is world famous for a reason. Very cool animals and plants left and right. Try planning ahead to see which animals you want to see to avoid going through heavily trafficked areas, and avoid inclines and stairs when you don’t need climb to see them. Save your energy, this Zoo can wear out anyone

      Not that great.
I wasn't"t a big fan of this place. First of all its kinda out of the way travel wise. The park offers one 25 minute tours with the free admission. You pay up for everything else. Not that many animals in the caged area, many were empty. Be prepared to walk a lot. In my opinion, the San Diego Zoo is ten times better than the Safari Park.

      Great zoo!
This is a great zoo! There's something for everyone. You can easily spend all day walking through the exhibits. The one gripe I have is that I wish the park was laid out better - with the walkways and signage it's easy to walk in circles and not know your way out of an area. Make sure you reserve tickets in advance to see the panda bears (you can't walk up to that exhibit). I also wish it weren't so expensive.

      Disappointed Pandas at the zoo
EARLY MORNING PANDAS. Tour. Dont waste your money. No different than getting a time slot ticket or waiting in the standby line. Description implies its JUST pandas. As a member I dont need to see the bears or birds We took a slow walk and talked about the plants. Nothing other than seeing the pandas on exhibit. No behind the scenes or add on for the money.

      Price gauging disabled people
The zoo is pretty and lots of cool animals. However my father and I are unable to walk the zoo and it’s quite despicable they charged us 60 dollars to rent a scooter. For the zoo and safari park just for scooters we shelled out 240 dollars. It doesn’t get much lower than price gauging disabled people.

      Not that good
We've been to lots of zoo's in different countrys, and this was not one of the best. We didn't liked the animal enclosures and the view of the animals wasn't the best. The price was way to high! We went anyway because a lot of Americans told us it is such a nice zoo. But it wasn't. Also way to litte benches to sit on.

      Fantastic zoo
This zoo is amazing. Not only do they have wonderful exhibits but the surroundings and plantings are beautiful. There is something for everyone here. We spent the entire day here but if doing it again we would get a two day pass as we were not able to see everything. We would break it down into halves maybe and be able to see everything. The pandas had returned but the exhibit wasn't open yet so I am glad we saw them in DC last October. Do not miss this if in the area.

      Botanical vs Zoological Park?
Beautiful botanical park with nice paved and shady walking trails. By the way there are some animals too. I got some good photos of rare white rhinos, Sumatran tigers, low land gorillas and saw a cheetah run too. It’s a nice place to visit with the family and kids. The food was good. It is a money pit as expected. $20 parking. $75 entry per person. $25 food. More options if you have more cash on hand. But heck, you only live once and this is helping the endangered species I think, right? I’d say it is worth it but I’m spoiled by the St Louis Zoo being FREE and $10 parking yet #3 in zoos in the country. A notch above Brookfield Zoo, Chicago or Cheyenne Mtn Zoo in Colorado Springs. So check it out. 1800 acres! Wear good comfy shoes and bring a drink because California is hot and the on site beverages are pricy too… helps save the animals…

Quite a large zoo may need a 2 day trip, lots of walking with some uphill, recommend the bus tour. Very clean, loads of animals and good restaurants for lunch. Lots for kids to do extra. Entry fee high but worth the experience.

Great place for kids. I would recommend the zoo over the Safari Park. The animals are much easier to see. They are closer together & more of them. The weather is great because it’s closer to the beach. Safari Park is hot, even in April, and is too much walking for children. You don’t see too many animals up close at Safari & absolutely everything is an add-on!!!! SO expensive! You have to do the add ons because so much is closed at the Safari. They will tell you it’s open but it is not or it’s open but will cost you a couple hundred dollars! It’s great for the animals because they have more space to roam but I recommend the zoo!!!!

We very much enjoyed the zoo. We really liked the bus tour that was included in admission. A double decker narrated bus tour takes you around and close to many zoo highlights. This may have been the most well spent time at the zoo for us. Also really enjoyed the cable gondola ride that stretches high above the park which is also included in admission! The most negative aspect at the zoo is the lack of variety and healthy items in food for sale. Too much sugar in the Nestle cookies! Too sweet yikes! Plenty of free parking. Loved the greenery/gardens!!

The zoo attractions themselves (despite some closures do to Covid 19), were all good and enjoyable. However, as much as we tried to do our homework prior to going (talking with people that have gone to the zoo with their young children over the past 2 months), we found attending the zoo during "Kids are free in October" promotion was not a wise choice. We were very anxious as it was so crowded inside the zoo.
The zoo opened at 9 a.m. but we were there at 8:20 in anticipation of a line. The good news is that the parking is free. The lines at 8:20 must have had 1500 people in them. They were well distanced, marked, and masks were required. The screening to get in involved answering a few typical questions. When we arrived INSIDE the park it was about 9:20 and it was a decent but manageable crowd/attendance. By 11:00 it was very crowded and by 12:00 the lines for food at a decent eatery were 100 people deep with no social distancing. We ended up leaving at 12:30 as we were uncomfortable. Best bet - go on a weekday and go when kids are not free. It didn't feel like reduced capacity but people were turned away at a given time.

We went the first weekend of January and got there at 10am. The tickets lines were all pack, but because we bouth the tickets online we just enter. The Zoo is much more that that, is the shows, the exceptional double decker tour bus with a guide, a trolley to jop in any corner when you are tire and animal encountes and exibits. It takes almos 2 days to see and enjoy the whole park. Worth of every dollar paid!

This zoo continues to amaze me after decades of visits. They continue to innovate, create, and keep adding new things to hold my interest.

Be prepared for a decent walking workout - until you take the bus all day, which isn't bad - there are lots of hills, some of which are pretty steep. However, for me, this is a positive as I get a workout for free.

If you live in the area, an annual pass is a great value, not costing much more than a single visit.

Easy entry to the zoo using the pre pay ticket app to skip the line. Wonderful day spent at the zoo with family. Taking the kangaroo bus line inside the zoo really helped to see everything and cut down in some time spent walking.

Ok first the good: this is an incredible property with a mind boggling selection of animals. Wear comfortable shoes because the walking is brutal with lots of steep hills. But it’s worth it for the gorgeous landscaping, well sized habitats and charismatic animals. Now the bad, the really bad: despite requiring advance day and date tickets, the zoo is clearly not limiting capacity during COVID at all. The crowds on the first Monday of spring break were terrifying. The lines to get in, in the brutal sun, required about an hour of constant walking (before a marathon of a zoo tour) with awful loud music blaring. Once inside, there were very few employees to be seen directing traffic, only a handful of helpless volunteers in red shirts. The pathways are winding and charming, but there was zero social distancing enforced. It wouldn’t have even been possible with the crowds. In addition to that the number of refreshment options couldn’t support the demand and the crowds (even during COVID) and the lines at lunchtime were wrapped around the park. Imagine toting one (or several) hungry and cranky toddlers who’ve endured an hour wait in the heat, hours trekking the park, waiting in packed lines like sardines to get a glimpse of a lion or an elephant, only to then have to wait another 45 minutes for an overpriced and limp slice of pizza. There’s absolutely no thought or care given to young children or people with disabilities— and more importantly the park and the city of San Diego are NEGLIGENT for allowing such massive crowds during a deadly pandemic.

The solution is simple and one I’ve experienced at nice zoos in Los Angeles and Fort Worth- limit capacity and used timed entry. But clearly this zoo cares more about raking in cash than about customer experience or safety.

Also less important than safety, but the zoo should list on the website which animals are going on Spring Break over Spring Break. Our toddler explored the map for weeks in advance of the trip and for whatever reason was desperate to see the moose. But guess what - he must have been down in Cancun with Ted Cruz because no moose was in residence. Again this is a very simple fix- just list online the exhibits that are closed.

It was a beautiful day. We went with a big group (20 ppl) of international students (adults) and we enjoyed it very much. We were able to walk around the whole park within 9-3pm. We had a 30 min break to eat lunch and didn’t get on the buses (except skytram one way) which I believe are free. Around noon, most of the animals were napping or inside so we did miss a handful of animals. They sell adult beverages in some of the food places. They refilled my personal water bottle with no problem, and there are water fountains in random places. They allow you to bring your own snacks and water bottles (no straws). You do get a discount with a zoo pass membership (the discount amnt is dependent on the type of membership you get). The avg cost of food per adult is $15, a drink about $5+, and children about $10. Dont be upset if you miss the polar bears, as this is South Cali and the weather is warm. They normally aren’t out and about in the heat (70-85F). The orangutan 🦧 exhibition is currently closed for renovation (amongst a handful of others), and there are no giant pandas at this time. Employees wore face mask but the majority of guests were not. I do recommend wearing hats, sunglasses and sunscreen. There are a lot of hills, so prepare those muscles if you’re pushing a stroller or grandma. They do offer electric scooters for a rental price. Hopefully this helps answer general questions.

Well, if I had to do it over again we wouldn't have paid for the private cart tour. We only reserved it because we thought it was going to be private with just our family of seven and I didn't want to be the traling grandpa of the group walking around the zoo and we wanted to keep our unvaccinated grand kids safe , however, we ended up sharing it with another couple and a training person named Josh which sat next to the driver.. Apparently they scheduled two groups of seven at the same time so there was some confusion between Cori and Marli the two guides which cost us a fifteen minute delay. We were extremely uncomfortable because we had to squeeze a third person in our row and we had back packs and a baby bag.We feel like we got burned. I asked to speak with a supervisor afterwards and they came back with an email address. We tried calling and couldn't talk directly to anyone so I guess we are out $354.00. We found out later that the Bus Tour was available and it followed the same route to see the tiger, elephants and Rhino. Either tour only does the right side of the map which we were not aware of anyway and the other half is only accessible by walking. And the poor elephants need more room to roam
