- ginad2810 contributionsNot worth the frustrationThe GPS did not match up with walking tour. Very disappointing. The information and tour speech was great. But until they work out the GPS kinks, not worth the money. As I walked around Boston, I was even more happy I had made this choice when I saw the size of tour groups with guides. It was nice to be able to stop and break for lunch and resume when I was ready. It was nice to be able to replay parts sometimes too. I enjoyed relearning so much American history. I was also able to buy it for my husband and son and it was very easy for them to get it on their phones, as well. I don’t think it was very clear from the directions given, however, and we just kind of figured it out on our own. We were able to purchase 3 tours for less than the price of one tour with a guide. I would definitely recommend this as a terrific option!

Enjoyed having information all by the way. Some really fun facts and no crowds with a regular tour. We were able to move around at our own pace and really immerse ourselves into other stops by going into some of the museums, etc. only problem is that the audio cues weren’t perfect. Some played after passing a spot such as the Benjamin Franklin statue at the Latin School.
Other than that, we were so glad to have this as part of our trip!

Thanks for sharing your experience with our Freedom Trail Audio Tour, Brad and Nicole! We're thrilled you enjoyed having all the information and the flexibility to explore at your own pace. Sorry to hear about the audio cues issue, sometimes it happens when the route isn't followed in order. Nonetheless, we're glad to have been a part of your trip to Boston! We purchased it in the morning and was able to follow the email link, download and start listening within the hour. It worked pretty well on our iphones. On one of our phones we had to manually start a narrative at a few stops but it was not hard to do. The younger half of our group thought the level of detail was good but the older half would have liked more details and maybe some brief stories or anecdotes. It was nice to be able to go at your own pace and not be in a group. We got to the end after 5 pm and the museum and USS Constitution were closed so we went back on a later date.

I was eagerly looking forward to exploring the historic Freedom Trail with the help of the Boston Freedom Trail Self-Guided Tour App by Stories With Action. Armed with enthusiasm and my iPhone, I thought I was set for a day of historical discovery. However, the experience was anything but enlightening.
Right from the start, the app presented challenges. It offers four different tour options, yet none seemed to function properly. Navigating through the app was confusing and unintuitive, leading to a frustrating start to my journey. The most glaring issue was its inability to accurately pin my current location. It kept suggesting that I use other mapping apps like Google Maps, which defeats the purpose of a self-guided tour app designed to streamline my visit.
The content provided by the app did little to enrich the experience. Each stop was accompanied by a disappointingly brief description, lacking depth and the engaging narratives one would expect from a historical tour. In stark contrast, I ended up joining a live guided tour from the visitor center at Boston Common, which was filled with informative and humorous storytelling—exactly what was missing from the app.
In conclusion, the Boston Freedom Trail Self-Guided Tour App was a letdown. I ended up abandoning it in favor of a live guide who provided the rich historical context and engagement that the app sorely lacked. For those planning to walk the Freedom Trail, I strongly recommend skipping this app and opting for a live guided tour instead. It might cost a bit more, but it’s worth it for the quality of information and the overall experience.

I'm sorry about your disappointing experience with my Freedom Trail Audio Tour. While the app is designed to work offline to help with navigation in low-signal areas, it seems like this feature and our multi-language options might not have been clear; downloading the tour in advance is crucial. I appreciate your candid feedback, as it highlights areas for improvement. I want to ensure you're taken care of, so please send a refund request, and I'll process it promptly. Your input is invaluable for enhancing the tour experience for future explorers.

It was easy to download and instructions were clear. Parking is terrible in Boston so we got a 4 hour timed parking and could not complete the tour in that time. We wanted to listen to the sites we missed but once we got out of parking, our tour was no longer available. The history sites are amazing and the narration was good when we could hear it. Boston had noise overload and we had a difficult time hearing.

Robyn, I'm sorry to hear about the parking issues you faced. Unfortunately, that’s out of my control since it’s a self-guided audio tour. As for the missed stops, don’t worry! My tour is valid for a year after booking, so you can always pick up from where you left off and finish the stories at your own pace. I also recommend trying the tour on a less crowded day, and for the noise, carrying headphones helps ensure you don’t miss any narration.

Great app! We shared wireless earbuds and walked the Freedom Trail on our own terms. We bought the $39.99 bundled tour that included multiple tours, many that we listened to in the car along the way. Made our NE trip more interesting!

Excellent!!! Loved the info. Loved doing it at my own pace. Some of the tour groups with personal guides were going much slower than we wanted to go, and with 20 or 30 people all strung along the path. The only challenges we had was getting the app figured out. For the first few stops we couldn't get it to play and show the map at the same time. We got stuck somewhere in the app and couldn't get it to work right. After several attempts we got it going and it was fine after that.

Ron, I’m glad you loved exploring with my Freedom Trail tour at your own pace! Sounds like my self-guided tour was a perfect fit for your speed — the big groups can often get unwieldy and inconvenient. The self-guided walking tour was well made and gave us the basics. The GPS worked well overall. We enjoyed doing the walking tour on our own and feel like we heard more then the people who paid for tours which were large and hard to hear.

I loved it and it was great for a solo travellers- the GPS triggers meant things played at exactly the right moment and the marked path made navigating easy (for the most part). If you would permit a suggestion however, it would be good if the "next up" text included the location name. Just sometimes the route wasn't clear due to forks or disruptions and this would help clear up where to head without manually triggering the next audio clip or navigating away to the list of locations just to check you were headed the right way. Also, the embedded map didn't work off line for me. Minor points- I loved it and have recommended it to multiple people

Very user friendly app and perfect for seeing the city. You can pay a lot of money for this tour with a guide but don’t! Get the app and walk the trail at your own pace. Stop off along the way at Quincy Market for lunch and enjoy the history of the place. All areas are very nice and accessible. No hidden dangers a lovely city. Importantly this app allows you to download the tour and go offline so don’t worry about mobile data etc!

Thank you so much for your feedback! That flexibility is one of the best features of our self-guided tour. I’m thrilled that my tour of the Boston Freedom Trail added to your learnings and that you enjoyed it. I also have 100 other self-guided tours for other parks, scenic drives, cities, and historic sites in the US — hopefully, you’ll get the chance to try them next time! Also, just to remind you, the tour you bought is yours for a lifetime. So, you can listen to it at home or on your next visit.

I need information about the duration of validity for the audio narration and map access for the Freedom Trail Self-Guided tour after purchase and any specific conditions or restrictions for using the content during this period. Thank you!
Written June 26, 2024
The tour is valid for a year after your purchase. You can travel anytime during that period and reschedule your planned travel date up to 24 hours in advance. Additionally, you can use the tour multiple times throughout the year without any restrictions. This setup allows you to explore at your own pace and return to the content whenever you choose.

What languages is the audio tour guide available in?
Written March 18, 2023
There are three language options for the audio tour: Chinese, English, and Spanish.
Written May 10, 2023
Do you provide headphones?
Should I buy one tour for 2 persons or buy them separately?
Written August 17, 2021
We don't provide headphones. Two people can definitely listen together on one phone. Boston's street noise can be pretty loud at times though. And the Freedom Trail is a popular activity, so it will be busy. Two people are probably the max that could huddle together and listen comfortably, without sacrificing the quality of the experience.

If you can only use the password once, and you accidentally close the app.....can you get back in?
Written July 9, 2021
Yes, you can. At least it worked well for me every time. I was able to get out of the app and go back just fine. It’s definitely a great way to know Boston.
Written July 12, 2021
Hi. My family of 3 will be traveling to Boston next weekend. If I purchase 3 self guided walking tours simultaneously, will we be able to get the app on all three of our phones and share one password or will I get three passwords? Also how can I contact your company directly?
Written June 9, 2021
If you book 3, you’ll get one password which can be redeemed 3 times (once on each phone). It’s a good idea to get one for each person because sharing audio in Boston can be tricky (street noise, traffic, etc).

Where do I start the tour?
Written May 12, 2021
This self-guided Freedom Trail tour starts at the Boston Common Visitor Center. It ends at the Bunker Hill Monument in Charlestown. You can also take the tour in the reverse order if you prefer. The Freedom Trail tour is also available in three different languages (English, Chinese, Spanish). It’s about 2.5 miles.

Hola, está disponible en español? Dicen que 1 tour sirve para 2 celulares. Es así? Debería comprar uno solo para mi marido y para mi? Muchas gracias
Written May 11, 2021
Yes, it is available in Spanish as well as in Chinese. Each individual should purchase one tour. If you're a couple who like to share, buy one tour, and remember to bring headphones you can split.
Written February 10, 2022
If I book this through TripAdvisor, it asks me for the number of travelers (we are two). So I end up booking two self-guided tours. But we want to listen together on one phone. So why do I need to purchase two?
Also, it is possible or recommended for two people to listen together on one phone? Not sure how loud Boston is or noisy the Freedom Trail might be, or if it is appropriate to play the audio out loud.
Written September 1, 2020
Just purchase one tour. (Tripadvisor's "number of travelers" question is standard, and we're not able to edit it to be specific for a self-guided style tour.) Two people can definitely listen together on one phone. Boston's street noise can be pretty loud at times though. And the Freedom Trail is a popular activity, so it will be busy. Two people are probably the max that could huddle together and listen comfortably, without sacrificing the quality of the experience.
Written September 2, 2020
Good question! The password is one-time-use only so once you enter it in the first time, it can’t be used again.
It’s also valid for 25 days from the date of travel as a default. If you’d like it to be longer, or if you’re not visiting for a while yet, I can certainly extend it for you — just shoot us an email!
