A really personable and informative approach made it feel like we were hanging out with friends. A MUST DO!
We had such a great time with Rob who showed us around and respectfully provided insight into the darkest corners of Haight Ashbury. A really personable and informative approach made it feel like we were hanging out with friends. A highlight of our week long trip to the city. Diolch / Thanks! Chris and Olivia Ogmore Vale, Wales

A tour guide who is a chef. Good neighbourhood knowledge, excellent restaurant selections. Cool Murals too
The tour guide was very professional and friendly. He had good knowledge of the Neighbourhood. He himself is a chef, a man of keen taste, and each of his three restaurants he picked were each excellent. ! Each restuarant served one item. We had a Burrito (melt in your mouth), a reddish Gold Crispy skin and crispy pork Taco (culinary gold), and a tamale (I am not one for tamales, but these were very good. The tamale restaurant also sold delicious pieces of fried pork belly )..,So good! And he was on a first name basis with all the owners of restaurants, and that’s nice to see. My only regret is that we did not get to try a bit of Pozole (a soup) with chips…no doubt it would have been excellent. I come from Canada, and I have visited proper Mexican restaurants with very good Google ratings. Alas, I can only regard them as equivalent to Taco Bell; and Taco Bell can only now be viewed as Travesty. Pity us Canadians 😭. I absolutely recommend this tour.

Don’t think about it, just book!!
We had a fabulous tour with John Hurst! We were super grateful that they ran the tour on thanksgiving day, as we arrived from the UK the night before so it was a great start to our trip. We have used this company several times in New York so knew they were reliable, trustworthy, and would give us a great time! John was very helpful and interesting, and gave some great tips to make the most of our time. We met some wonderful people on the tour as well, which is always a bonus! Thank you!

MURDER, MAYHEM AND MUSIC IN THE HAIGHT
Robert was very knowledgeable and a conscientious tour guide. He had lots of information about the murders and cults in and around the infamous Summer of Love. We would have liked more information on the music scene. He showed us lots of amazing architecture in the Haight area but unfortunately it was getting dark and made some of the details hard to see. Would recommend starting the tour a little earlier in the late Fall/Winter months so that the beautiful houses can be seen.

Talk the Talk and Walk the Wharf, with Robert
Robert was our tour guide for the Haight Murder Mayhem tour. He was so knowledgeable, passionate and brought the stories to life we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. After making sure we got on the right bus home, we asked Robert if he was leading anymore tours, he let us know about the Fisherman's Wharf walking tour which was near our hotel which we signed up to as soon as we had WiFi! Having spent a week around Fisherman's Wharf, we thought we knew the Wharf pretty well... Robert kindly shared his vast knowledge of San Francisco Wharf with us, including the history of how it all started, where to eat that wouldn't break the bank, and the fascinating exhibits that we as tourists wouldn't have given a second look. Would strongly recommend Robert as your tour guide, his knowledge, experience and honesty was refreshing with his personality shining through.

Peir 39, Seal Lions, View of Alcatraz, and Antique Arcade Games
We did the walking tour and went to an old arcade game museum, Musée Mécanique. That was a highlight. Very unique and special place. Our tour guide, John Hurst, explained the reasoning behind rail road tracks at the end of the pier. I won't spoil it...go find out. Interesting! John recommended places to try out the clam chowder bread bowls too.

Great tour guided by one of the most interesting guys I’ve ever met
Robert was an amazing tour guide and quite an interesting guy! His lived experiences in the area really made the tour feel personalized. He was very knowledgeable about the history of Haight Ashbury too. The tour was very entertaining and informative. As an added bonus, we stopped for pizza at a great pizza place (with lots of music history). Highly recommend to anyone interested in the darker side of things (and the history of the Summer of Love).

    Lovely park with Victorian Homes
John gave us a great insight into the Victorian Homes and the history of the area. The park was lovely and had great views across the city. He was happy to answer our questions and give us tips for the rest of our trip Thankyou.

No stepping inside the house - The Painted Ladies and Victorian Homes of Alamo Square Tour
Our guide John Hurst was wonderful. Very knowledgeable on the history of San Francisco. But it'd be better if you guys update the website which still shows "Step inside Chateau Tivoli" as one of the highlights as you are currently not allowed inside.

The walking tour of Fisherman’s Wharf was absolutely worthless. We advised the agent by phone(two different individuals) and the guide prior to setting off that one of us has difficulty walking. We were ASSURED by all that we would be accommodated, and the pace would be modified. After the first three minutes, the guide was so far ahead of us that we heard nothing for the remaining 70 minutes. I tried to get the guide’s attention on four separate occasions, but I was ignored or not seen. I have no idea what sights we were passing as my companions and I were out of earshot, and no matter how quickly we walked, we couldn’t catch up.
We nearly missed the boat to Alcatraz. The agent on the phone was very helpful. She guided us through the will call and boarding process.
Experience First tours is really not very accommodating. The length and strenuous nature of the walk were both misrepresented. I’m sure the guide had great knowledge, but we will never know.
We are thoroughly disappointed with this experience and hope this review keeps someone else from our fate.

Hello. I feel that this review is unfair. We actually spoke on the phone before the tour and you told me that someone in your group had difficulty walking and that you would likely leave the tour and meet up at Alcatraz because of that, which I relayed to our guide so he would not be waiting for you if you left. This tour is not suited for people who can't walk well. We cover just over a mile in 75 minutes and have timed tickets at Alcatraz so we can't linger too much. I'm sorry if you felt this was unclear, I wish you would have called me back sooner so we could resolve without leaving a negative review. None the less, I hope you enjoyed your Alcatraz tour. Best, Dara

The Alcatraz tour was great! I downloaded the app and it was descriptive and felt as needed f I was transported to life in Alcatraz as a prisoner.

But, the walking tour pre-Alcatraz was less than inspiring. The guide, Wealth was his name, didn’t have much knowledge of Fisherman’s wharf, the sea lions, and general information of surrounding subjects aside from what he memorized for the tour. He was also condescending in his attempts to answer questions he didn’t know…and he kept mentioning how broke he was. Don’t do the walking tour if he is your guide. It was a forewarning when he said there were a lot of no shows to his tour (there were only 3 of us).

Oh my gosh - I am so sorry to hear that! Wealthy hasn't been with us that long so I will be sure to bring this to his attention ASAP and make sure he is up to our standards or else I will be scheduling other guides. Please contact me in the future if you would ever like another SF tour (with another guide of course). Best, Dara

The tour of Fisherman's Wharf was rushed making it hard to keep up with Chet at times. Some interesting information was given some was not necessary. We had to pratically run for the boat to Alcatraz at the end. Would I recommend this tour, no I would not.

Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear you were rushed. Chet has so much info to share sometimes he goes overboard. I will certainly make sure to review timing with him so this does not happen again to our future guests. Thank you for the feedback and I hope you enjoyed the rest of your trip. Best, Dara

Rob gave us a very interesting tour and narrative about the San Francisco waterfront and it's history. The weather was a bit misty and cold so it detracted from our experience. The Alcatraz portion was outstanding. Thoroughly enjoyed touring the island. Weather had improved by that point.

This was a fantastic insight into San Francisco history. Our guide Eric was incredibly knowledgeable, and fun, keeping the whole walking section of the tour interactive. He gave us clear instructions on what to do once we left him to head over to Alcatraz which was so useful.
Alcatraz itself was fascinating, the self guided audio tour was brilliant and well worth doing.
I would highly recommend this trip.

Fantastic walking tour of the Fishermen's Wharf area, our guide Seth, loved history and this really came through. We loved hearing about the history of San Francisco and the people. The sea lions were great too! Our guide also took us to the pier for the Alcatraz Island tour and ensured that we picked up our tickets. Well organised!

This is a great little tour that lasts only a couple hours ending with a trip to Alcatraz. We started out near Ghirardelli and worked our way towards the Alcatraz ferry. The tour included a brief history of San Francisco, some cool little places to check out and some suggestions for great local family owned dining.

The walking tour was peppered with useful and interesting historical information, really helped to understand the history of San Francisco and it’s people. Our guide Robert was very familiar funny and went the extra mile to make our time with him enjoyable. He even helped us navigate the busy ticket office when we were getting the boat to Alcatraz.

This is not a review of the experience but of the company that sells the tickets to the experience. We were not able to make the trip due to health reasons. I called 4 days in advance to cancel the tickets. I was rudely told that the sales are final and there is absolutely nothing that they can do to help even if the person is ill. They were not even interested in re-booking it to a different date. Please be advise that you may loose your money God forbid you or your family member gets sick.

Hello - please be advised that this is Alcatraz's policy, not ours. We would love to have a more flexible cancellation policy but since Alcatraz is a National Park they have a very strict 4 day no refund policy. We could have rescheduled or refunded with 5 or more days advance notice, but not within. It sounds like you spoke to a Viator rep and not us directly. If you would like to do so, maybe we can work something out as a compromise. Best, Dara

Great information about Alcatraz & its history. Wonderful views. A long walk to the cell block. They said the equilivent of a 13 story building. The ferry & the island had a tremendous amount of pesky flies.
