Your guide picks you up at your San Francisco hotel in a comfortable and spacious SUV that is well-equipped to handle both busy city streets and the steep winding road to Muir Woods.
Drive across the Golden Gate Bridge to Marin County, where Muir Woods sits in a deep valley near the Pacific Ocean. Depending on traffic, it takes between 40-60 minutes to arrive at Muir Woods. Your guide drops you off close to the forest entrance, allowing you to skip the parking hassles at this popular destination.
Have time to explore the coastal redwood forest on your own, with suggestions offered by your guide. Walk to Cathedral Grove (about 45 minutes round trip) to see some of the oldest trees in the area, or take the Hillside Trail (60-75 minutes) for a longer hike. If you get hungry, you can purchase tasty food and drinks at the Muir Woods Trading Company Cafe.
Head to Sausalito next, making the scenic 30-minute drive to the bayside town. Have about one hour to check out the waterfront restaurants, cafes, art galleries, and views of San Francisco. Your tour ends with return to San Francisco by car.
Muir Woods now operates on a strict parking reservation system (parking reservation included). Some days Sausalito will be first and other days it will be Muir Woods. Due to the limited mandatory parking reservations, you must be flexible to visit Muir Woods. Your guide will do their best to get you the most time in each destination. (Typically 60-90 min in Muir, 60 min in Sausalito).
If you would like to return on your own by ferry from Sausalito, your guide can offer stops at scenic spots such as the Golden Gate Bridge viewpoint or Muir Beach, then provide drop-off in Sausalito to end your tour.
