Absolutely Great Experience & Gimmy is a gem!
May 2021 • Friends
Gimmy was great! We loved all the props Gimmy shared esp the receipt for childbirth at the Chinese Hospital in the 1940s! The Fortune Cookie Factory was a highlight as well!

Treated like a second-class citizen
Feb 2020
Thank you for deleting my previous review. Dorothy is NOT a treasure; at least, not to me. She treated me like a janitor, and made me clean up after everyone after we were finished eating a dim sum lunch. Funny how she asked me, and not anyone else, who all happened to be white, by the way. (This review is for a tour I took that was pre-covid)

More history please
Enjoyable tour. There were just four of us which was great. I just wished there was more historical information. Also, would have liked to visit Stockton Street.

Fun and informative
Aug 2019
My family took the walking tour (without lunch, although we ended up buying several snacks across our stops). Lola, our guide, was full of interesting stories and anecdotes, and although my husband and I (being local) were already familiar with Chinatown, she showed us several wonderful spots we had no idea existed. My aunts were visiting from Singapore and enjoyed this window into a different Chinese culture. What a great way to spend an afternoon! We all had a lovely time.

Fun but not very informative
Aug 2019
Our tour guide was friendly and moved at a great pace, but it felt like the content wasn't really there. Very little about the history of the neighborhood. A couple of conversations veered into political/PC issues and made for a few uncomfortable moments.

Wok Wiz did however provide excellent customer service during the purchase/booking process.

Experiencing Chinatown at it's Best!
Aug 2019
Imagine finding out that Chinatown's main street, Grant Avenue was San Francisco's first street, that Chinatown was completely destroyed in the fires after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, and that Old St. Mary's Cathedral (built in 1854) was the only building in Chinatown to survive those fires. We learned where Dr. Sun Yat-Sen secretly visited Chinatown and where to find Buddhist offerings for parted friends or family.

This and much more one learns on a walking tour in Chinatown. Our Wok Wiz tour guide was local, Dorothy Quork, a whirling dervish of energy, who took us up and down and around Chinatown pointing out architecture, statutes, history, old Chinatown and new, the best shops for whatever our desire and then ending with a delicious dim sum lunch at the Oriental Pearl Restaurant. Dorothy was quick to answer all of our questions and adding more information then we ever guessed was within the boundaries of Chinatown. And all the while Dorothy would be greeting friends on the avenue or shop owners. The tour made us feel part of the neighborliness of Chinatown. She is a gem having done these tours for 20 years! Thank you Dorothy. One can't go wrong with her.

I'd recommend doing a tour then spending time walking through the streets, shopping, people watching and enjoying this lovely & friendly part of San Francisco.

Kind and Thoughtful, But...
Jul 2019 • Couples
For the most part, this tour did not live up to expectations. We started 30 minutes late b/c group members were late. There might be better ways to deal with this problem than to shorten the tour for those who are on time. We didn't see much; a few shops where we could spend money, a temple, and a little street art. We heard some history, but not much. And we were done touring less than 90 minutes after we started, finishing at the tea shop, where we did get our only "free" sample. We didn't go to lunch, but we did get to see the pictures of what dim sum was to be consumed when we stopped and pictures were pointed out (at a different restaurant).
Do a little research on your own, and take a walk; you'll know as much or more at the end.

Thank you, Magistr, for your feedback. We apologize for the delay in start. While the vast majority of our tours begin on time, we will take this as an opportunity to review our practices to encourage "late birds" to join us enroute.

Eagles View of Chinatown
Jul 2019 • Family
My teenage kids and I really enjoyed Gimmy's tour. She took us into several shops and a buddhist and taoist temple. She gave us some history of Chinatown but there were times when it felt like she was in a hurry. What we loved the most was Alice's tea demonstration and tasting at The Red Blossom Tea Company.

Thank you, BArubia, for taking the time to write a review. We are glad that you enjoyed your time in Chinatown with Gimmy. There is a plethora of things to see in the area and I'm sorry if Gimmy's pacing felt rushed. We agree with you that Red Blossom Tea owner, Alice, does a wonderfully comprehensive tea presentation. We are so fortunate that they are so welcoming to our groups.
