This small aquarium adds variety and education to a touristy day in San Francisco. Especially great if your kids love sea animals. Walking through the tunnel under the sharks, rays and sardines is pretty cool. The place is small though and only takes about an hour to go, which makes the price of admission steep if you pay full price. There are often deals on Groupon and other sources to avoid doing so.

The focus is on what you would find in the bay, so you will not see exotic fish from other regions. But they are well laid out, easy to get through, and even have the pools where you can touch rays and other animals. We were there on a holiday weekend and the place was still clean and well maintained.

We were at Pier 39 so enjoyed going to see the fish at the Aquarium of the Bay. The sharks were intriguing. The other fish were fun to see. Its a nice hour or so walk through a smaller but still good California aquarium.

We had purchased digital passes to cover various attractions during our time in San Francisco (good job as paying almost $30 for this per adult would be a rip-off!). The staff member appeared disinterested when scanning our passes. The aquarium was small and didn’t have many creatures of interest unfortunately. It only took us approx 30 minutes to go round. The layout was confusing and not explained. The tunnels made me feel dizzy due to the swirling water and strange patterns on the floor. There was no detail for the alleged ‘Sharks of Alcatraz’ exhibit. Seeing the River Otters was the only real highlight. The admission prices for the general public seem incredibly steep for the limited experience provided.

We were debating on whether or not to go to the Monterey Bay Aquarium or San Francisco Aquarium. We opted for the San Francisco aquarium because it was closer - big mistake. It was overpriced and took about ten minutes to walk through the entire aquarium. My daughter said when we were finished, "Is this it?"

I somewhat chuckled at the caged squirrel they had, something you could walk out and see scamper on any street for free.

If you are in San Francisco, go visit Alcatraz, walk on pier 39, look at the sea otters, or just look at the people walking by but don't waste your money on this aquarium.

We really paid a lot to get into this aquarium, only to find out it was incredibly small. They had two small floors. I expected a lot from this aquarium since it’s next to the see and close to Fishermans Wharf, but I didn’t even see a big crab. It’s not worth your money.

They have various exhibits. They mostly feature animals who live close to the bay. The moon jellies are so pretty. Nice to walk through the tunnel with various shark species and bat rays. The kids will enjoy the touch pools with stingrays, starfishes, and anemones. There are also river otters. There was also a porcupine, Octopus and the highlight of our visit was their California ground squirrel Woolsey, my daughter was interacting with her through the glass. You can finish in an hour or so since it is really a small place. Visit if you want some time to kill, It’s a small Aquarium, maybe they can lower the price per ticket.

Seriously don’t bother. Take another look at the Sea Lions round the corner, your time will be so much better spent. Buy another ice cream if needed.

2nd aquarium we’ve been to in the USA, even worse than Monterey. Dark and dingy, small enclosures, no description/name of the fish you’re looking at. Only staff you see are those taking the entry money.

Where’s the passion from employees for the lives in their care? Where’s the passion to ensure the lives in your care have the absolutely best possible!

If this is the best you can give them, close. You’re soul destroying for visitors, now think how the fish in your care feel.

My wife and I attended the aquarium after a harbor cruise, and were pleasantly surprised with the exhibits! Two points in particular elevated the experience to the memorable. The first was the underwater exhibit, which allows guests to pass through clear tunnels within large tanks, each filled with fish, sharks, and other marine life. The second, and as a 35 year old I am somewhat embarrassed to admit, but I thoroughly enjoyed what I'll call the 'petting pond.' In it were two bat rays, and one sleepy shark. The rays were particularly active, and would swim directly up to guests, poke their heads out of the water, and permit visitors to pet their fins. As someone who hasn't seen them in the wild, seeing them up close was quite fun. I would highly recommend the experience!

Don’t waste your money. Even though we had reserved tickets for 4:00 pm and arrived at 3:30 we still were in line for 1.5 hours just to get in. When we finally got in we found displays that were sticky and not working, very minimal and small aquatic animal displays to see, a broken people mover, but the worst part was that they obviously oversold tickets. We were jammed in narrow doorways and dead ending hallways to the point one person had a panic attack (and this during COVID)?! I’ve been to a lot of zoos snd aquariums around the USA and I’ve seen better aquariums in smaller towns (like Myrtle Beach, SC) that put this tired, outdated one to shame.
