The big bus was a win for us. Rather than paying individual ubers or taking muni (city transit), we booked the big bus for the day. I do think it was worth the money. Before you depart, I recommend you download the app so you can see how far away the bus is from picking you up.
I almost gave this a 3-star review due to timeliness. They say "a bus leaves the depot every 15-20 minutes," and that may be true but it does NOT mean there is a bus arriving at your pick-up spot every 20 minutes. We waited 40, even 45 minutes, on a bus to arrive. We asked the bus driver and he gave us some excuse about traffic, etc.
Overall, I do recommend the Big Bus and would use it in another city to see the area.

We did the SF Hop On Hop Off tour this past Saturday (and a bit on Sunday). What a great first thing to do in San Francisco
I had looked online before arriving and was going to book but decided to wait til we arrived and was glad we did. A lower price was offered when we booked at the Jefferson Street Main office.
We did the complete route first thing in the morning which was great to see the whole city and get a good feel for the city.
We started the 2nd time around and stopped at Stop 2 (Chinatown) and did the included walking tour. It was very good. Doug was our guide and very good. He was funny, attentive and gave a lot of good information. (I'm a Travel Professional and have been witness to many Tour Guides in cities while working and Doug was very good). He took us to main points, gave food suggestions, gave good directions for after the tour. We did a stop at the Fortune Cookie factory which had too long of a line to wait with our group so he offered to bring back those who were interested at the end of the tour. The tour was about 90 minutes long and starts at 1 p.m. each day at Stop 2. Tips are welcomed and appreciated by the guide.
We then continued on and made stops at other places we had noted on our first trip.
The bus goes over the Golden Gate Bridge and has a stop at a viewing point at the other side. When people tell you its cold and windy on the top of the bus crossing the bridge...believe them lol. We added a winter hat, all our layers and were still cold - but its not for long - part of the San Francisco experience.
Some areas we were content with just driving through and hearing the commentary and some we got out and explored a bit more.
There is a stop just a couple of blocks from the Painted Ladies, Palace of Fine Arts is very close to a stop. Driving through Golden Gate Park and Height Ashbury was enough for us. We also used it just for transportation to get from the Ferry Building back to Fishermans Wharf (our feet were tired).
Recommend the SF Big Bus Tour.

The Big Bus Tour was really useful for getting around and seeing all the major sights in San Francisco. It was a windy day and going over the Golden Gate Bridge got VERY breezy and cold (so wrap up warm on cloudy days). The audio was also excellent as well and really informative.
The only reason I knocked off a couple of stars, was that the driver we had completely ignored a stop, which was the one we wanted. No buttons to alert him, and the next stop was too far to walk back to where we wanted to be. We had to pay money for a Uber to get us back to the stop we wanted, which disrupted our days plans, and then had to wait a month with back-and-forth emails for a refund on the cost of that.
We're hoping they have re-trained the drivers and reminded them to stop at every stop regardless.
Otherwise the tours themselves are really good and we enjoyed it despite the setback.

I purchased 2-day passes for me and my 2 daughters because buses were advertised as running "every 15 minutes". However, the next bus to come to our stops were 1.5 hours away at times and never every 15 minutes, as advertised. The busses were usually all clumped/running close to each other on their routes, and there were only 4 in total. Extremely frustrating. I was planning our trip around the advertised timing, and it was the same problem for both days. I requested a refund for my family and was denied a refund in any capacity. I had to pay for ride shares because this service was completely unreliable and a total waste of money.

If you want to take a tour of San Francisco and get great views of the city while also being informed of its history via audio with headphones provided in the cost, this is the tour bus to take. Punctual and frequent buses to pick you up and we got on and got off throughout the day without an issue. App has a lot of info including bus stops located near you and pics of the stops so you know where to go. Love the open top buses. In SF bring a jacket and hat because you can get sunburn and be cold at the same time. Would highly recommend and would use again in other cities.

The Big Bus SF is a great operation - the buses are very regular and well patronised, and the tour itself is incredibly dense and filled with information.
The live map on the associated app and timetables made it possible for us to stop off at many locations including City Hall, the Painted Ladies at Alamo park, and the Golden Gate Bridge viewpoint at Spencer Battery, and walking out to the half way point too.
The drivers were very cheery and helpful. The only downside is that occasionally the audio tour system does repeat segments right after each other and some of the audio ports simply don't work, but we were able to move seats.
We bought a two day ticket and were able to get 10% off at the kiosk on Pier 39 - though this was only advertised on the app at first and we had to mention it to get the same deal, unlike the LA tour where we were offered it without prompting.

We went on a Chinatown walking tour with Blake. He is a fascinating man full of information of San Francisco and Chinatown in particular. He was insightful , entertaining and he should probably write a book with all of his anecdotes and dramatic performances in showing you the history of the area. We would highly recommend taking this walk tour as a part of the big bus ticketing program. The big bus program itself was also fantastic. We got an instant outline and tour of the whole city. We also participated in a sunset tour which was also very much worthwhile going on.

The best way to see all of San Francisco. This appoximately 2 hour round trip circles all of the must-see spots in the city. It is narrated with a pre-recorded audio tour with earphones, available to listen in 6 different languages. It is timed to narrate what you are looking at as you reach each site. It allows you to hop on and off at each of about 14 stops to further enjoy each stop. The next bus will be by in about 15 minutes so that you may continue your tour. Bring a jacket if you are riding on the top open level especially as you travel over the Golden Gate Bridge. It can be damp, cold and breezy! Your ticket is good for the whole day, starting at 10am near Fishermans Wharf and up until 6pm. Well done Big Bus!

Thank you so much for helping us!
We had booked with the opposition company and were completely dropped in it by them. They would not help us at all eve. Rnough we had bookex 2 months ago, and deceptively tried to look like Big Bus. So we went over to the Big Bus stop and Jimmy was superb. He helped us to get onto the bus and gave us discounted rates as we had lost money on the other company one.
Really recommend Big Bus for several reasons, more busses running later, way better service (thanks Jimmy!) and just straight forward, no pretending to be another company.

We enjoyed the tour but found the audio commentary very contrived and a bit childish. The drivers were pleasant and, when our bus broke down, an empty replacement arrived very quickly. Use the online booking to get 15% off the price that you pay if you buy on the bus.

When purchasing the two day bus ticket, can you use the bus the day prior to the specified Alcatraz visit or does it need to be used the day following the visit?
Written July 16, 2024
I found that has a package for night tour. But the availability hours say only to 6:30pm but the sunset occurs only after 8PM in summer. The night tour has to work until 10 PM or work only to 6:30 PM?
Written June 21, 2023
I believe the night tour is not hop on hop off, so it starts at beginning and they time the stops for best view of sunset.
Written June 22, 2023
If I chose the premium ticket, does that include both the red route and the blue route? Or would I have to pick one or the other? Thank you.
Written October 2, 2022
Probably a stupid question as I have never done this before. But are you allowed to hop off at whatever stop, look around for however long you want and then get on the next one and see the rest of the stops? Thank you.
Written October 2, 2022
Is there a map of the route that shows the on - off locations ?

yes, there s a brochure which indicates locations you visit
