About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- nkadams20240 contributionsTwo thumbs up!Our first point of contact was Sean who advised us the back road to Hana was closed for repairs and that he can rearrange the tours we wanted to take to accommadate what we wanted to see. Our first tour was with Makana on the Road to Hana & Back with the Pipiwai Trail added. It was an amazing day riding in the Bronco and listening to Mak telling us stories of his Ohana & the history of Hawaii. Yes, we could have done the Road to Hana on our own, but we wanted to hear from a local about what we were experiencing which made the tour much richer. Our second tour was the Haleakala Sunset Tour with Tom. Tom was great and told us different things about the island including the geological history of the island and the best spot to set up chairs (which he provided) to watch the sunset. I highly recommend Hawaii by Storm!Written March 20, 2024
- Connector323899757200 contributionsTake This TourThank you Sean Storm, for your personalized service and guide Jay for giving my family such a wonderful experience. The vehicle was by far the best we saw of all the tours on the road that day -- very late model and comfortable. Jay was knowledgeable and even found a way to make time for us to stop at the lava tubes! We all gave Jay a big hug at the end of day (and a nice tip too -- that spends better than hugs any day!) Thank you Sean and Jay!Written May 20, 2023

- Utica80 contributionsTrip to Hana extraordinaireSpent the day on a full circle tour to Hana with Sean. Can’t imagine a better experience. Sean was knowledgeable, entertaining and committed to giving us a great experience. He would prepare us for photo opportunities and stop at just the right spot including waterfalls, swimming holes and the Hawaiian green sea turtles. We had over an hour at a black sand beach. We sampled local food spots all along the trip including fruits, baked goods, huli huli chicken and his root beer float. The vehicle was roomy and exceptionally clean. A wonderful day with unbelievable scenery and a memorable highlight for anyone’s trip to Maui.Written February 28, 2022

Our family of 4 took the Road to Hana tour in Hawaii by Storm's open-air Ford Bronco and WOW, it was worth every penny and more. I can't recommend taking a private tour instead of a group van trip enough - not only did we get much better views of the rainforest without a roof, but we got a very personalized, non-touristy experience with our guide Dustyn. HUGE shoutout to him, he was so welcoming and determined to ensure we had a great time, and so friendly that it felt like we had been life-long friends by the end of the day. He tailored the excursion to us instead of having to follow a rigid itinerary and also recommended his own suggestions for lunch, snacks, and stops! I seriously felt like I was getting a true Hawaiian's experience of the road to Hana. Also, if you have 4 people or less the Bronco is definitely the way to go as many of the amazing roadside views are actually above you on high cliffs plus everyone had a great view of the sights. I honestly can't imagine doing that tour with a roof in hindsight, we would not have been able to appreciate the scenery even half as much! The car itself came freshly cleaned and stocked with an ice cooler full of water and teas that we could throw our own snacks in as well, and a soft top on the car that could be closed if we got cold or it started raining... there were even umbrellas packed which came in handy because the sky will open up at any moment out there. The communication was extremely prompt from Hawaii by Storm, we corresponded many times beforehand about what to expect and what to bring, and they pick you up straight from your hotel so you don't need to get up any earlier than the day trip already requires! There were just so many little things that were very thoroughly planned out with our excursion that left me extremely impressed, and Dustyn was always thinking one step ahead to make sure everything went perfect. Overall it was the most magical day - we got to learn a great deal about life in Hawaii from Dustyn and got all the small but extremely crucial tips from him to keep the trip running smoothly, we were treated to such special views of east Maui from the open top Bronco, and most importantly, we got to make the day our own. I am so, SO glad we booked a private tour especially through Hawaii by Storm, and even more grateful we got Dustyn as our guide for the day! Private tours always seemed very luxurious but at least for 4 people, the price was extremely reasonable and genuinely worth the splurge. I can say without a doubt we would have missed out on a LOT of what made our experience so special and unforgettable if we had done a group van tour or a tour with a non-local instead.

"My wife and I have traveled extensively across the globe, and I can confidently say that our experience with Hawaii by Storm was nothing short of exceptional. On our very first trip to Maui, we had the incredible fortune of booking a tour with this company, and to our delight, the owner Sean himself was our guide for the day.
Our journey along the Road to Hana was beyond anything we could have imagined. Sean’s expertise in navigating the winding roads while providing fascinating insights into the history, culture, and natural wonders of the area was truly outstanding. His passion for Maui and deep knowledge of its hidden gems made our day unforgettable.
If you're looking for a tour company that offers more than just a sightseeing trip, I highly recommend Hawaii by Storm. Their dedication to creating memorable experiences is unparalleled, and Sean's guiding was the highlight of our entire trip."

We had the BEST tour of Hana with Mak last week. We debated on making the drive ourselves, but just a few minutes in to the trip, we were appreciating the fact that we booked a tour with Hawaii by Storm instead. First, the entire booking process was a breeze. I accidentally entered the wrong e-mail address and immediately received a phone call from the owner, because the confirmation e-mail was rejected and he wanted to check on the e-mail address. Then, the night before our tour, Mak called to introduce himself and give us the run down for the next day.
Mak arrived right on time and after just meeting our family once, called everyone by name and treated us like family the rest of the day. Our first stop was the Island Market for breakfast. Since we had just arrived the day before, being introduced to this gem was a huge game-changer for the rest of our trip!
On the trip, we always felt confident in Mak's driving and safe on a road that is quite challenging. As we drove, Mak shared stories and history of the island and answered many questions. He shares a love of basketball with our boys, so he even shared some information about pickup ball on the island and NBA trivia.
Our stops and timing we planned perfectly. We made a few stops on the way up to Hana, but left some of the busier ones for the way home. One of those was a waterfall that was teeming with people on our way up. Our teenage son admitted that if Mak wasn't driving, he would have demanded we stop to swim! But, as Mak predicted, the waterfalls weren't busy at all when we stopped. Every stop was perfect and Mak did a great job of making sure we knew what to do at the stops and what rules were important to follow for our safety as well as respect for locals and Hawaiian culture. One of the stops my kids raved about the most was lunch! Mak recommended the poke nachos at the food trucks in Hana and we are still talking about how good they were.
Everywhere we went, even while driving, Mak knew everyone. We heard stories about family, growing up on the island as a kid, and the Hawaiian ancestors and culture.
Over and over, our family kept saying that we were so thankful we decided to book the tour. The general consensus was that we would have probably missed a lot of great stops, and fought a lot if we decided to drive the road alone.
Book Hawaii by Storm and request Mak. You won't regret it!

We are a family of four 2 adults and 2 kids ages 16 and 12. We had the best experience on our road to Hana trip with Mark our tour specialist. The weather was rainy but that was to be expected in January but that didn’t stop us doing anything other than swimming in the waterfalls (we couldn’t do this because of the danger of flash floods). We got some great photos and Mark even captured some amazing shots for us as well as capturing some great family photos too! Oh also the banana bread at Aunty Sandy’s was delicious but we also had some mango bread and chocolate chip and macadamia nut bread from a lovely lady who was situated in a lay-by so leave some room for that, it was sooo good! The stop off at the cacao plantation was so unexpected the guy who made the chocolate from his own grown cacao was so friendly and spoke to us for a while. We bought some chocolate and a delicious scented candle.
We couldn’t have asked for a better guy to take us on our tour, we had lots of laughs, he was so friendly and very knowledgeable of Hawaii, which we loved! We really would highly recommend this trip it was a great full on road trip with breathtaking views.

For the last part of our Hawaiian Vacation, we planned to do a full day Hawaiian tour, but unfortunately the original tour guide of another company we booked with came ill and canceled the tour at 4:30am of the day the tour was to take place. In a hurry early that morning of trying to plan the perfect vacation for my 2 80+ year old grandparents, I was able to come across Hawaii by Storm and plan a tour at 6am with Sean, the owner of the company, who was able to get out incredible tour guide Tom, who took his personal day off to give us a tour, that would turn out to be one of best tours that me and my grandparents took on the Hawaiian islands.
We signed up for the Hana and back tour, and truly had an incredible time. We first stopped at a beach to get some photos of the green sea turtles laying on the beach, and got some incredible images. Next, we started on the Road to Hana, stopping along the way comparing Aunt Sandy’s and Halfway to Hana’s banana bread, stopping at Hana Gold for chocolate, and the Waianapanapa state park for the black sand beach and to swim in the waterfall. Finally in Hana, we were able to stop at my favorite stop, which was getting hulu chicken on the Red Sand Beach, which was something that was on my bucket list.
Throughout the entire tour, Tom was extremely kind, answering all the questions that we had about Hawaiian history, the local flora, etc, as well as being extremely accommodating for my grandparents who are hard of walking. The Ford Expeditions are extremely clean and comfortable, and were very easy for my grandma to get in and out of. Overall, I would recommend Hawaii by Storm to anyone who is looking for a private tour guide in Maui, as you will not regret booking from this company.

What a day! Mak was a great guide! His knowledge of the area was amazing! The views from the summit were incredible and even after a long day of talking Mak serenaded us with somewhere over the rainbow with his ukulele as the sun set. We had a great lunch, fresh smoothies, saw waterfalls and saw the most beautiful sunset. Ask for Mak- he's funny and a wonderful guide.

Our favorite day in Maui so far!! Book a road to Hana tour with Hawaii By Storm Tours today! We were nervous about trekking the treacherous road with a motion sickness prone family + a 7 month old infant. I am happy to report that no one got sick and the baby handled the tour well with the frequent chances to get out of the car. The car was spacious and comfortable and held 5 adults and a car seat with room for one more. We passed other larger tours on the road and were so happy we had our own ride. If your group is large enough, the private tour is basically the same price or sometimes even cheaper! Mana was the best tour guide. He gave us a ton of history on the way, jumped in the waterfall with us, sung to our baby when she was sad, had great jokes, and made sure we got to see everything we wanted to (even when a downed power line disrupted the original plan). I can’t express how memorable he made our trip!
The roadtrip itself is BEAUTIFUL! We were glad we got to sit back and enjoy the scenery. Getting the chance to swim in a waterfall and see the black sand beach were some of our favorite parts. 10/10 would recommend! You won’t regret it!

The trip to Hana is frequently listed on sites, including TA's, as touristy
But our trip with Jaime, our HI born driver and tour guide extraordinaire, was so far from being that. In the first place she was an excellent driver of what is an extremely challenging drive to the quaint and historic town of Hana. Her love of Maui evidenced by combining her depth of knowledge about its flora, geography, and its people, was a performance that was quite unexpected for a"tourist " trip, and left us after 10 hours with a superb appreciation of this world heritage class-locale. Her tales of her family roots here intertwined with a running commentary of history and politics, agriculture and tourism, added immensely to the impact of this first visit to this most special Hawaiian island. Thank you Jaime and Sean for providing this heart felt experience to visitors and sharing with us why this place is so deserving of every effort of preserving what is "Aloha" to Hawaiians.

I cannot recommend this tour highly enough! We took this trip with our family: myself, my husband, and our 3 kids (ages 10, 11, and 13.
Upon booking, we immediately received an “Aloha” text thanking us for booking and letting us know that they had received our reservation and that we could text or call that number any time to ask questions and that our driver would reach out the day before our trip.
Sure enough, the day before, our driver texted and introduced himself, confirmed our pick up location and time, and gave us some instructions and details about the trip.
The morning of, our driver picked us up at the front door of our resort. Our driver was Dustyn, and he was AMAZING right from the start. He was cheerful and friendly. He chatted with us like an old friend, and by the end of the trip, he felt like part of the family. My kids were calling him “Uncle Dus” by the end of the trip!
We started with a stop at Safeway (grocery store) for Starbucks, bathroom, and some snacks. The tour company provided bottled water and canned Hawaiian juice for our trip. Then, we were on our way.
In the car, Dustyn played laid back Hawaiian music, adding to the whole experience, but he also told us that he could play anything we liked. He even offered to let us use his phone to choose songs on Spotify or connect our own phones to the car’s bluetooth so that we could play our own playlist. We preferred his music, but in the way back, he turned on a Disney playlist and our kids had a sing along! They loved it!
As we were starting out, Dustyn told us about his favorite stops along the road where he planned to stop, but he made it clear that this was our trip and we could ask him to stop at any time. He emphasized that if there was anything at all that we thought we might like to see, just speak up and he would gladly stop.
We took all of Dustyn’s recommendations, since he was the expert, and I don’t think we could have had a better day. Everything he suggested was absolutely perfect! Aunty Sandy’s warm banana bread on the peninsula, walking through the lava tube, lunch at Braddah Hutt’s (the BEST food we’ve had in Hawaii!), Waianapanapa state park black sand beach, coconut milk ice cream, swimming in the waterfall, and more! He knew all the best restrooms and stopped frequently, which mom appreciated!!! He knew where to change clothes. He took family pictures for us, telling us how to get to the best places for pictures. He got in the swimming hole and played with the kids. He was amazing!
Having a guide (as opposed to doing it on our own) took away all the pressure of driving the unknown roads, trying to figure out if we were at the right place, knowing the best places to stop, etc. I’m confident that we would not have had as enjoyable experience without Dustyn!

Perfect all day experience. Started at 6 AM, while early was the best way to go, was able to pack so much in and still be ahead of all of the crowds. Kaipo was an amazing guide. He created a comfortable environment, allowing for a great conversation, humor, and full of information.
Just four of us, which was the perfect number to feel at ease in the large luxury SUV. The entire experience as a whole was just so well thought out and curated.
Lunch spot was the best food we had all week!
Kaipo was a joy to spend the whole day with. He made it feel like was in the car with your cousin showing you around their home turf.
Would highly recommend this for any small group, or even if solo traveler wanting a private experience. Not the biggest fan of “tour groups” so this was the perfect experience.

I'm curious if you can add stops, or if I'm missing it and maybe you already stop at the Red Sand Beach?
And do you stop at the Venus Pools?
(Waioka Mile Marker 48)- Great spot for cliff jumping
good 5, 10, 20, 30 foot jumps.
And Aunty Sandy's Banana Bread?
thanks!

If you're booking a private tour you can definitely add stops. I believe we did stop at the Red Sand Beach. Aunty Sandy's Banana Bread is also on the basic itinerary. I don't recall anything about Venus Pools, though.

We have a 5 year old joining us. Does she count as one adult? Right now we have 2 adults with her it makes 3. There wasn't anywhere to indicate children when I booked. I would like to know if there would be room for 3 or 4 more adults/kids. Thank you
