About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Kentheduke0 contributionsBook this to see the volcano NPGreat. Long day but our guide David talked non stop to give us info. Some stops were surplus to what we wanted from the day but that was ok. Small group. Personal touch to the delivery of the info to put everything in context. David was great with our 8 year old as well. A visit to volcano NP is a must and we were very happy how this trip was run and panned out. Highly recommended.Written August 21, 2024
- Cazza19720 contributionsOMG the best5 Was a must do the only reason we went to Kona and def do not regret it at all . To walk 1 km accross a crater was the best tick that off my bucket list on par with walking through the Grand Canyon , so much to do I’d def say do it over 3 days we missed so much and we purchased a self guided tour for $10 so many places we didn’t know about get there early or over a couple of daysWritten August 15, 2024
- Pell07990 contributionsMemorable 25th Anniversary !What an amazing day with our geologist and tour guide, Zane! We learned so much and laughed the whole day. Having a guide like Zane is the only way to see the park! He knows all the best places to stop and what to look for. We loved lunch, dinner, the winery also! We had a wonderful 25th anniversary day at Volcano National Park! When we go back to the Big Island, I hope to set up a private tour with Zane for the day!Written August 7, 2024
- X8196MKdavidv0 contributionsExperience the natural wonders of Hawaii with an expert geologist and world-class guide: Zane at HGT.Our private tour with Zane was a top highlight of our 10-day trip to Hawai'i. Zane is a wealth of information: utilizing his lifelong career as a world-traveling geologist and his decade living on the big island. He offered unmatched information about the natural surroundings, native culture, and useful tips for tourists during their stay. Zane was prepared for everything: snacks for the kids, spare parkas for when the weather turns, and well-maintained relationships with the locals and park employees to make sure your trip is seamless and enjoyable. I would recommend this tour to a group of any size or age traveling to the Kona area.Written July 30, 2024
- 57swamyn0 contributionsSuperb Big Island Volcano TourThe itinerary was excellent and our guide David was wonderful. It was a long day but I enjoyed everything about the tour. We had some sunshine today and were able to see the volcano in all its splendor. Lunch at the Volcano House Rim Restaurant was tasty and the view was amazing. Our guide David was kind, patient, knowledgeable and sincere in his efforts to provide the best experience possible. I highly recommend this tour.Written July 2, 2024
- G2427NCsusanh0 contributionsI could tell that Zane loved what he was doing and knew what he was talking about!I felt like I was with family that lived on the island. We spent the day touring the island and visited several different places. If you only do one tour of the island itself, this is the one to do! He knows a lot about the island, the culture, history, and of course the landscape. One of the many highlights was the tour of the volcano. We didn’t see an eruption but Zane shared pictures and videos that he took of past eruptions. We had plenty of opportunities to explore the area around the island.Written May 21, 2024
- lisapena140 contributionsBest Volcano Tour on the Big IslandBest volcano on the island - Zane and David are highly intelligent Geologist who will keep your interest the entire tour. Visit the Crater Rim Road to see the latest black volcano rock with 30-foot waves. If you want to experience the volcano in a completely different way, check out the volcano with Hawaii Geo Tours for once in a lifetime experience!!!Written May 16, 2024
- Roquk0 contributionsAmazing knowledgeable tourErick was amazing and very knowledgeable. He was on time with pickup and honestly really takes care of his customers. He had snacks for the trip raincoats we used with umbrellas and throughout the drive he had a headset he used to speak thru the speaker system to educate us on the island as we drove. If you desire to learn and have fun book this company because it was worth it. The lunch at the restaurant was great as well and he also follows up with you after the tour if you have questions about anything to do on the island. Well worth it.Written May 16, 2024
- Passenger8281060 contributionsBest Island Tour!Best island tour! Having an owner operatered tour led by a geologist made all the difference when seeing volcanoes and lava flows. Add a coffee farm tour, black sand beach, waterfalls and lunch at a restaurant (not a box lunch) made for a perfect day! Pick up at your hotel and small group of only 14 max instead of a large bus was perfect.Written May 11, 2024
- 525angusr0 contributionsA great day!Zane was a fantastic tour guide! He was so knowledgeable and answered every question we threw at him, broadening our knowledge so much! Not only this, he kept the day fun and interesting - and we had a great lunch ! Definitely recommendWritten February 13, 2024
- bjia340 contributionsWell Worth A VisitWonderful views of current and former volcanoes. The park guides and staff are extremely helpful. You can do a quick tour or a longer one based on your interests. We toured on our own and used an app called GuideAlong which helped us understand the park more. I’d recommend it too.Written January 14, 2024
- jzelonka0 contributionsMust do tourDavid, our amiable and professional tour guide, offered an engaging and enlightening tour. His extensive knowledge enriched our experience as he adeptly responded to numerous questions. The tour encompassed diverse stops like a coffee plantation, volcano, lava tube, waterfall, and black sand beach, culminating in a scenic lunch atop the volcano. His deep insights into Hawaiian culture and history were invaluable. I wholeheartedly recommend both David as a tour guide and the overall experience, suitable for all ages. My husband and I relished every moment of this enriching excursion.Written December 30, 2023
- 581jennys0 contributionsAwesome day with a true park expertOur family - 2 kids and 2 teens - had an amazing day with David! He was so knowledgeable and knew the park so well. We are an active family and were able to do a ton of walks/short hikes. The park is simply unbelievable and David really connected us with the history and geology. We felt like we saw so much. Very well taken care of - great lunch, plenty of drinks and snacks. We had a warm, sunny day but there were jackets, etc. in case. Couldn’t recommend more.Written November 20, 2023

- Middy120 contributionsWonderful Island TourThis is the tour I was looking forward to during my trip to Hawaii, and it did not disappoint. It was a fabulous day. David, our tour guide, was great to spend the day with. I loved the stories of the Big Island that he shared with us. He was knowledgeable about the geological wonders of the island. I loved all the stops of the tour. My favorites were riding through Volcano National Park to where the lava met the ocean and walking through the lava tube. The included lunch was one of the best meals I had on the Big Island. And FYI, for a full day tour, the restroom stops came at good intervals.Written November 1, 2023

Went yesterday, what a spectacular day filled with amazing sights, tons of interesting facts and history, and perfect weather to see all that the Big Island has to offer. Van and driver were punctual on pickup and kept us on course all day without ever making us feel rushed. Met some very nice people in the van (Chili Champ from AZ!), had a great lunch, and all the snacks and drinks along the way kept us energized.
Best part was our guide Erik! What a terrific guy, well traveled, well informed, humorous and engaging. His broad background (UXO!) and love of geology only added to all of the details of the island and the incredible history of volcanoes. Erik earned every one of these 5 stars! Highly recommended…

I have to begin complimenting our tour guide, David. He is energetic, knowledgeable and is very good at what he does. The tour itself, however, leaves much to be desired. I cannot believe that none of the reviews I read complained about the awful amount of time spent in a van! I am aware that the island is large, but seriously…who comes all the way to Hawaii to look out a window? Our tour began at 7:15 in the morning. We then picked up passengers from another location (25 min drive…). Our first stop was supposed to be a tour of a coffee plantation. The view here was lovely, but it was NOT a tour! We stopped, heard about coffee trees, had some coffee and were then back in the vans! Next stop was the black sand beach… it too was beautiful (40 min visit) then back in the vans! Ordered our lunch while driving ….again lots of driving! Quick mediocre lunch and on to the Volcanic National Park. We spent a lot of time driving to different viewing points in the park.. again more driving! And at each stop David shared lots of information about geology and volcanos. So I guess if you love geology..this is a good tour for you. We proceeded to drive and stop all afternoon. One stop ( the lava tube) involved a brief walk- which was cool) but most stops were brief and then we were back in the van. Our last stop was a waterfall in a parking lot setting and we then got back in the van and still had an hour and 25 min drive back to the first group’s hotel. My husband and I got back to our hotel at about 7 pm - we saw the sun set from the van! It was a very expensive tour and we spent about 65% (or more) of the time in a full van!

Dear Geri,
You are our first non five star review so we are very concerned about your experience with us. We are glad to see that you state you had a great experience with our guide but not happy with factors that are outside of our ability to change. First and foremost, your complaint about the length of our tour. We actually spend an average of 6+ hours in the van and 5+ hours outside the van. Due to it being a big island there are very few ways to shorten the length or time of our tours. In fact, we are one of the few companies that drives over saddle road instead of all the way around to spend more time in Volcanos National Park and less time on the road. We state very clearly that this tour is going to be 11 to 12 hours, but we will look into making it more visible and known to future customers that you are driving around a big island.
Our stop at Heavenly Hawaiian Coffee is about 45 minutes long and David talked with you about coffee, showing the pulping, and drying process at the Hoshidana. The rest of the time there is meant to enjoy the coffee and a welcoming environment thanks to the staff.
We are the only tour company that goes to a restaurant and order a hot meal, because the cost is so high, so I’m also sorry to hear it was mediocre to you. We have considered a box lunch like all other tour companies but I assume a cold sandwich, chips and water would have had a worse response. Thank you for pointing out our cost as it made me look at what other tour companies are charging for their tours that are similar to ours. It turns out everyone else is about the same cost as us or more.
As far as your complaint about David talking about Geology throughout the trip, we encourage you to take a look at our website or information online. We state very clearly on our website that we are a company founded by Geologists, hence the name Hawaii Geo Tours. Our primary focus is to teach about the volcanics and geology of the island and the National Park. If you, or anyone, are not interested in the geology of the island then we are absolutely not the company for you. It’s unfortunate you didn’t see this about us as we could have encouraged you to go with another company or a smaller island. Thank you for posting your opinion of our tour.

Zane and his team run a really great company. The tour he took my wife and I on was amazing. His geological knowledge it’s really what sets him apart. He was able to show us special rocks, lava glass, all kinds of cool things. Not only that, he took us to a really great restaurant while at volcano park, to get some Hawaiian pastries, and also stopped at an amazing roadside fruit stand that he knew up on our way out, you could almost call what we went on a mini food tour as well. His energy was really great, and he was very informative the whole way. Not to mention he’s a great photographer also!

Where do I start on how wonderful Zane Smith and his geo tour? He’s sun a nice guy and very knowledgeable on the history and science of the main island volcanoes. His van is comfy, had plenty of drinks and snacks and the home videos/professional videos of the 2018 eruption was an added bonus. We loved the coffee tour and can’t wait to receive our first coffee club shipment, the lunch was tasty and we have loved looking back at all of our amazing pictures and videos of the lava at various points on the island. Don’t let the 11 hour timeframe scare you, it went by sooo fast and we saw so many really cool things! Zane had rain jackets or warmth jackets for your comfort and a stool to get out of the passenger van. His attention to detail was so appreciated and he even offered his personal cell phone number if we needed any recommendations for food or fun for the rest of our stay. Just a nice guy- even if you don’t like volcanoes, book this tour to make a lifelong new friend on the main island with Zane Smith!

Erik was amazing! He is a trained geologist who educated us about the island in it entirety including creation of landforms as well as island history & customs. We had individualized attention at the coffee farm & at the local restaurant for lunch. He gave his us his own spin on the volcano park which provided us a personalized experience. We are grateful for his hospitality & kindness. P.S. He has great snacks!!! <3

Zane and Erik were fantastic tour guides who customized the tour to maximize our time and get the tour we wanted. We were a group of 8 with 3 teens and 5 adults. They picked us up in their brand new passenger van with comfy seats, plenty of air conditioning, and plenty of snacks, drinks and even a lunch made by one of the island restaurants that we pre-ordered. We were on the opposite side of the Island from most tourist attractions, so we were able to extend our time with Erik and Zane and take advantage of more time in the Park and stop by Akatsuka Orchid Gardens and a local winery. The knowledge and passion that Erik and Zane as geologists have about Volcano National Park and Volcanoes in general is truly impressive. We learned so much without it feeling like a lecture. Even our 3 teenagers were engaged the entire day! We were able to go to areas that other tours don't access and learn more with the smaller group than we could have on our own or in a much larger group. They addressed every detail and more that we could have thought of even down to having sunscreen. They also were great with communications and even helped guide us to the Isaac Hale Beach Park and assisted us with other questions and planning on the remainder of our trip. i cannot recommend these guys enough! You will not regret your time or money spent with Hawaii Geo Tours. it was one of the highlights of our entire trip!

This tour was amazing! Where do I start from the pick up to the attention to detail, Erik was awesome. He went out of his way to ensure the entire group was comfortable. We maximized time and we were able to visit the coffee farm, a lovely restaurant, black sand Beach, volcano National Park (with arch and lava tube) and rainbow falls. Erik did not short change us and was incredibly attentive and friendly. You will not get personalized service from these big chains. This company is more than awesome!!!! Book with them and you will NOT be disappointed.

Best tour ever!!!!Toured on 6/7 with owner Zane. Family of 3. Full 11 hours in a comfy van with two other great families. Zane is knowledgeable, funny and personable with tons of insight on the island ,geology, and island culture. Everyone of 9-10+stops was fun and he made an effort to work around the light rain and crowds. From the coffee farm to Rainbow falls we circumnavigated the island. Zane provided insight on every stretch of road (all 267 miles). He was prepared with water, snacks and rain jackets.
We had a delicious flatbread pizza at the Volcano House restaurant. Don’t want to spoil the trip with too many details. This is a very family friendly trip. There were 3 other great children with us on this trip and Zane answered every one of their questions.
He took a ton of pictures of us, which he has promised to download and send.
Take this tour!!! Your understanding of this beautiful island will be increased fivefold.
Aloha. J. Fleming.

The experience with Geo Tours was better than expected. From seeing how the coffee farmers made their brew to seeing turtles at the black sand beach, we had a fabulous Hawaiian lunch and then toured the many aspects of the Volcano National Park. The weather included some rain, but warm raincoats were provided and our guide explained the many wonders of the park and the nature of volcanoes and their impact on the island. Our group all enjoyed a scenic sunset as we made our way back to Waikoloa. It was a trip that will be long remembered and shared with others. Bravo to the Geo Tour staff in making this day a highlight of our vacation.

We had the pleasure of taking a tour today to Hawaii Volcano National Park with Zane Smith, owner and operator of Hawaii Geo tours. We have been to the park many times, as we are frequent visitors of the Big Island, but never on a guided tour and I must say, being with Zane was the MOST WONDERFUL way to visit the park!! We rode in a luxury van, with only 12 participants. Zane was absolutely the best person to be with for this adventure. He was engaging, funny, inclusive and so full of information. The day was very long and included stops that we had not seen previously, including walking in a lava field and going to where the park meets the ocean. He made everyone feel welcome from the start as he shared his expertise as a geologist with the group. Thanks, Zane, for a fantastic tour and thanks for generously sharing your wonderful photos with the group
I HIGHLY recommend Hawaii Geo tours for your visit to Volcano National Park. You won't be sorry!!!

Hi, we have a hiking backpack for our 2.5 yr old and my husband and I are very physically fit and have hiked long hours with him before comfortably. Can we take him on the excursion? Also we are staying at the OCEAN TOWER BY Hilton Grand Vacation Club, do we need to meet at another hotel nearby on your list, or can you accommodate?
Written February 18, 2022
They do allow children we also stayed at Ocean Tower at Hilton. They picked us up there. Enjoy!

Is there any special clothing or shoes that are required for this adventure - for example, hiking boots?
Written January 18, 2022
As for clothing, you should take a jacket in case it gets chilly because of the altitude and the wind.
