Mike was fun, flexible and knowledgeable. He created a wonderful experience for our family. His energy was contagious and his stories were delightful and educational.

Our favorite day on Hawaii thanks to Mike. We learned so much about the area history, trails, plants, wildlife and geology in a fun and informative way. We had an exclusive look at a crater that only Mike and one other guide on the island are certified for. We saw a lava tube and waterfalls, toured a bit of Hilo and had some great food for lunch and dinner. Being able to customize the itinerary was a huge bonus allowing us to be spontaneous and flexible. It was perfect for our family of adult children, but this would be a great trip for any and all ages of participants.

Awesome trip! Very knowledgeable guide. He took us places we would have never found on our own or even in a guide book. We loved it!

The tour we took truly was a fascinating experience. Among the tours we have taken across many countries, this was absolutely incredible. We saw a beautiful waterfall, coffee farms, and the most intriguing of all, Kilauea Volcano. The delicious food we ate after the long journey across the lava rocks, was perfect. Spending time with my family on this tour will be an incredible memory for me.

I started off the New Year in 2020 with a couple great hikes in Hawaii! I joined a tour with Mike Nelson of Hawaii Adventures Now! I am happy to say that my decision to tag along with Mike was definitely one of the best decisions for the entire year! Mike Nelson is an outstanding guide and an expert on the Big Island. He made our 9 mile trek an extraordinary experience. The day was full of local history, plant and fruit identification, mythical stories of the ancient Hawaiian Gods and Goddesses and a history lesson regarding the Kings and Queens of the Ancient Kingdom. As a bonus, he told us the entire story of how Captain Cook was killed on the shores of the Big Island more than a century ago. He took us to two volcanoes. Both of which are still active but taking a respite. In addition to it all, he took us to amazing restaurants with the freshest fish available and good solid local food and drink. Not only did we have a great outdoor experience, at the end of the tour, I felt like I could fake being a local with all the knowledge he gave us. Five Stars! Thank you so much Mike!! P.S. Mike is also a talented polyglot. What a fabulous experience-truly the highlight of our trip to the Big Island! This was an incredible way to get exercise. Mike’s extensive knowledge of trails, plants, wildlife, topography, history, languages and people made this an amazing day. We stopped at family farms to sample the best coffee, honey and macadamia nuts ever, and the lunch and dinner restaurants were wonderful. This was my second trip with Mike, and I’m ready to sign up again. Thank you, Mike! You’re a treasure.

We had the best day with Mike doing the craters hiking tour! Amazing way to get introduced to the island, learn about some history and take in beautiful nature while getting a good workout! Would highly recommend this tour to anyone adventurous, we saw steaming volcano craters that you can only get to with a verified guide, hiked through jungle, visited a black sand beach, learned about wildlife, and walked along a crater floor. Mikes knowledge about the island and local secrets was superb. Food was great too. What an experience!! Thanks Mike for an unforgettable day!!!

Mike Nelson is a fabulous guide. Cannot recommend this tour highly enough. The trip is fairly strenuous, and I wouldn't recommend it to people not already in okayish shape. You don't need to be a super athlete or anything, but if you can't walk for roughly 4 hours on a variety of surfaces, up and downhill, at a brisk pace, maybe consider a less challenging tour. As for the actual tour, it was EXACTLY what my wife and I were looking for. Breathtaking sights, a nice workout walking, good conversation with the guide and other guests, lunch and dinner included, and transportation that was very accommodating. Just perfect. I prefer this tour over a helicopter tour because you see plenty of amazing views, but you actually traversing and feeling the landscape around you.

The triple crater tour is an excellent choice. Hike the crater floors of two of the Bog Islands most active volcanoes, with steam vents and a reminders of their recent activity. The diversity of the topography is incredible, while one crater feels like a walk on the moon, the second begins and exits through beautiful tropical rain forests. The hike itself is great, but, made so much better by the guide Mike. Knowledgeable, friendly, concerned and by days end you feel like you have been lifetime friends. Food stops are very good and the convenience of hotel pickup awesome. We arrived during a stagnant tropical low, which resulted in non-stop rain in the National Park for nearly a week. The company left the choice up to us whether to risk the weather or not when the forecast remained questionable. We lucked out and it was one of the best weather days of the month. Company has great integrity ! Do not miss this opportunity.

Mike (the tour guide) is one of the most knowledgeable people you will ever meet. He is full of information you are unlikely to find anywhere else. If you're looking for some great photos, this adventure will deliver on that as well. I"m 14 and had a blast, so it"s great for the whole family too.

What a wonderful day of hiking and seeing all sorts of off-the-usual-tourist-path sites! Mike is so knowledgeable and kind! Even though we were the only people on the tour, he refused to cancel or book us elsewhere because we were celebrating our wedding anniversary. He knows so much about the island, the plants, the formations -- this Triple Crater trip is well worth the time and money. Thanks Mike!

We choose “Hawaii Adventures now” after checking out on trip advisor and booked the trip back in January. I had always dreamed of doing this trip and once I read the itinerary I knew it was perfect for my husband and I. We were picked up at 9am from our hotel by our tour guide Michael. He had confirmed the day before and made the whole trip outstanding. He took us down the west coast past Kona and we stopped in some great places on request. We also stopped at a coffee plantation and tried some of their blends, together with their honey and macadamia nuts, this was awesome. We had lunch in the only bakery in Punalu’u the most southern town in USA. Finally we made it to the Mauna Ulu, an impressive still-steaming crater in the heart of the park where you can peer down into the depths of the volcano. Across Kilauea Iki crater floor, a spectacular hike across the still steaming vents since it's last eruption. And then we ended the day with a 4.5 mile hike to the 1240 m summit of Kilauea Caldera, where the lake of lava at Halema'uma'u flowed. Unfortunately there was no flowing lava this time as it had stopped last August. However 1 year ago it erupted after 94 years of dormancy. After this we had an evening meal at the world famous Ken’s diner which is owned by Dwayne Johnson’s aka the Rock’s Uncle and to end the night we did star gazing up on the mountain and saw thousands of stars, it was awesome. Michael is both the guide and owner and takes pride in giving detailed information throughout the trip, his energy, passion and enthusiasm was infectious. I would definitely recommend this tour if you are visiting the Big Island.

Like the other reviewers have noted, our hike to the volcano craters with Mike Nelson was a trip we shall not easily forget. It is a long drive from the Mauna Lani region to the national park, but Mike enlivened it with informative and entertaining talk, visits to the harbor to see swimmers with dolphins, no-pressure visits to coffee and honey farms ( which we usually hate, but these were fun), Captain Cook point and beautiful associated areas, black sand beach where they happened to be tagging and brining ashore sea turtles that day, incredible hikes in the volcano craters — where despite cloudy and occasionally rainy weather, the drama made up for it all. A real highlight was the stargazing at the close of the trip on a moonless night, where we had never seen the sky with such clarity and beauty, with shooting stars punctuating the evening. This proved to be a twelve hour trip and tiring, but Mike never flagged. We would heartily recommend it — especially for the kindness and expertise and guidance of Mike Nelson. I don’t think children under twelve could handle this, though, and one needs to be fit enough to walk on some sloping rock faces and some strenuous climbs.
