About
The 'other side of the river' is something heard every day in Porto, especially among locals. But likely few visitors know what lays beyond the wine caves along the riverside. On this tour, we showcase a non-touristy area full of homemade cuisine and alive with local culture. We'll walk through the winding, narrow streets of Gaia, visit the oldest winery in Portugal founded by King Joseph I and the Marques of Pombal, and discover both “classic” Porto food, such as the francesinha, as well as local secrets like alheira. Each tasting will be paired with local wine or beer. While enjoying the stroll and tastings, you will learn about both Portuguese and regional history, not only from our guide but from the locals that adore to talk and share their experiences, all the while getting the best views over the city of Porto. Don't Miss - when visiting the oldest winery in Portugal you'll get to enter a secret wine cave with aging bottles of port wine that are hundreds of years old.

We highly recommend this food tour in Porto since this is the best way to not only taste port wine and food but also get an experience of how locals eat, and see neighborhoods you would otherwise not have a chance to see.

Beatriz is an amazing guide and we were lucky to have her twice as our guide (Lisbon and Porto). She is very passionate about what she does and is willing to share her knowledge and insights on the food, history, and culture of Portugal. She is extremely friendly and patient and is accommodating. We had two vegetarians in our groups and a toddler (who is pretty active). When we were running late to the tour she made thoughtful adjustment so that we don’t miss any experience she planned. Instead of just waiting for us at the designated meeting point she used that time to ran across the street to get the special porto pastries so that we have a taste of it. Sure enough, we all loved it and kept ordering and enjoying this pastry through out the rest of the trip. She also got a special treat for the baby which is really enjoyed.

The tour of the oldest Port wine cellar was amazing. We not only learnt a lot about the process making port but also different kinds of port. Our tour was even more memorable because we got a small private tour of the cellars and had port tasting in a beautiful private room. This was all because of Beatriz’s special care and eye for details, and we got entry into a private cellar where you got to see oldest bottles of port wine which goes back to 1827.

She also made sure all the stops we went to had vegetarian options and all restaurants she choose were pretty accommodative. The highlight for me was tasting food at a local restaurant/grocery store run by two women. We loved the croquettes and the tomato rice here and enjoyed lovely views of Porto. The food and wine was always generous at all the stops and Beatriz makes sure that you are well feed. Our meat lovers also enjoyed the Francesinha sandwich even though they were pretty full.

Beatriz was also generous with her restaurant recommendations outside the tour and they all worked out great. Over all a five star tour and some of the best memories of Porto for us. Thank you to Beatriz and Eating Europe for such wonderful memories.

Great tour with Beatriz, an excellent way to get your bearings (so would recommend you do at the start of your trip) we got to taste lots of local food and wine (won't give any details so as not to spoil tour for others). There was just the 2 of us and Beatriz on the tour so it felt like a private tour. Beatriz gave us lots of local information and helpful local tips along the way. The visit to the oldest Port wine cellar was particularly interesting as we got to visit parts that normal tours don't. Having been on a food tour in Lisbon a number of years ago would now make a point of doing a food tour in any new city we visited. Beatriz sorry for late review we each thought the other had done.

We had such a wonderful experience on this tour! Beatriz was such a charismatic and knowledgeable guide. We appreciated the obvious thought and research that went into the entire itinerary. Each stop was unique and truly felt like a local experience versus a typical tourist attraction. It is of course worth mentioning how delicious the various food and beverage pairings were throughout the day. It's difficult to choose a favorite! I highly recommend this tour for those who wants to immerse themselves into the Porto/Gaia culture for a day and sample the best of local cuisine!

Oldest port wine cellar & food tour
Beatriz took us on the most excellent tour this morning. First of all we went to the oldest port wine cellar in Porto and had a very interesting talk and tasting on the history of port wine production and saw the cellars. Following this we sampled local food in several small independent food outlets with Douro wine and beer. Beatriz’s knowledge on port wine matched the guide we had at the cellar as did her knowledge on Porto and it’s history. What a simply delightful young lady we could not have wished for a more engaging person to spend a few hours with. We strongly recommend a tour with her.

While our time in Portugal (Lisbon, Sintra, Porto) was wonderful in every way, the day that we spent with Beatriz on the World's Oldest Port Wine Cellar & Food Tour was the best!
Our day started by meeting Beatriz and, after a brief introduction, we headed off to a local bakery. We had already been in Portugal for one week and had tried many treats from many bakeries but, Beatriz designed the tour to provide samples of Portuguese cuisine that many tourists wouldn't typically try. She provided two bakery items that were new to us and also revealed their history and significance. That pattern continued for every stop that we made that day, Beatriz provided samples and meals that were specific to Portugal while also telling us a bit about their background.
While walking around on our tour we also asked Beatriz many questions about her country and she was very open and personal in her response. We felt that we were touring a beloved city with a great friend who's primary interest was seeing that we enjoyed every minute and came away with new knowledge and appreciation.
While this was only one of 6 tours that we took while in Portugal, it was, without a doubt, our favorite. If you want to come away from your visit to Portugal having tried some new dishes, and also having learned much more than you would by just reading, book this tour, you won't regret it!

Hey Pete! Thank you so much for this amazing review! It's always my pleasure to try to show and explain some features from my country that I love but also that are more unknowned for our guests. And to read that our tour was your favorite is even better! So glad to hear that! Hope to see you again! We hope you’ll come eat with us again soon in another one of our other foodie cities. Obrigada! Beatriz

Beatrice was an incredible guide and made the tour a great experience. She was so passionate and really cared about the foods, wines and the people behind them. The best way to discover Gaia. Loved the places off the beaten track as we would never have discovered otherwise. I would definitely recommend and hope to do another in the future.

My wife and I had an incredible experience with Beatriz. She was engaging, extremely knowledgeable, and gave us a truly authentic taste of Porto food and wine. She took the time to explain the history and context behind each of the stops she chose to take us to - we were stuffed by the end of it and felt like we had a much better appreciation for the local food and wine! We'd highly recommend the tour!

Had a very enjoyable time on this trip and learnt a lot about the eating and drinking habits of the people of Portugal. Beatriz was friendly and so easy to talk to.
Unfortunately for the company we were the only two on the trip but this made it more enjoyable for us.
We will certainly encourage other people to take this trip.

My wife & I did the tour on the day of our 10th wedding anniversary. It was a great way to start the day, and we both loved it.
Beatrice was an amazing host/tour guide, and puts so much passion into it.
This was my second tour with Eating Europe and both have been amazing.
This should absolutely be top of your list of things to do in Porto!
