Visit to Cockburn's Cellars

About
Cockburn's large aging warehouse is the most extensive in the entire historic center of Vila Nova de Gaia, housing 6,518 Port Hulls that age under its huge roof, being one of the only ones to have its own crew of coopers.
Cockburn's Ports are carefully aged in oak casks and ferries and are accompanied by a team of tasters and oenologists until they reach their ideal maturity.
The impressive scale of Cockburn's warehouse allows you to house a large amount of Aging Special Reserve, to develop its unique style and perfect balance, acquired by more time of aging in wood than any other Reserve Port.

- Guide6002178571600A haven like no otherGreat location with a beautiful and quite atrium. A haven to relax and enjoy some delicious port, after a long day of walking.
- R8210CMjoelk00Good, but not great experienceI have a couple of Cockburn's older vintage ports, so when we were in Porto/Gaia, we decided to visit their caves. They're up on the hill a bit from the river. We had their "premium" tasting, but I wasn't wildly impressed with the wines. The facility seems pretty nice and maybe a tour might have improved things? All in all, though, unless you just love their ports, I think there are better experiences in Gaia.
- markeQ7135AN00Very interesting and superbly well delivered tour and tastingBiggest 'caves' in Porto/Gaia. Only one still with its own working cooperage. Great historic traditional of both British and Portuguese origin. Hugely interesting and informative tour given by 'Michael'. Very engaging and at sensible pace. Never ever sounded as if just going through a script. Always prepared to tackle in questions and always showed excellent knowledge and understanding to answer them amply. Glad we chose Cockburn's over the many others available. Lovely to make the connection with what I had only previously taken from the supermarket shelves. Well done, Cockburn's, and well done "Michael" on all accounts.
- Tiredoftryin00Splendid TourGood news, there are no restrictions on photography. Found the whole tour extremely interesting from start to finish. The host explained about the function of the different vats, The process of decanting from one to another and the reasons behind it. The coopers finish at 5pm so if you would like to watch them in action book you tour earlier. We were only able to see their workplace and hear about the dying skills! After the tour there were 3 glasses waiting to be tried complete with complimentary chocolate. No hard sell in the shop ant the end, in fact we decided to go back the next day to browse after making space in the car.
- A G00Great tour with FranciscoOur tour guide was Francisco and he was absolutely fantastic. He was extremely knowledgeable and gave us all the information we needed and more. He was funny as well! My friend and I had a bunch of other questions at the end and he was extremely helpful by giving us all the answers we needed, recommendations, as well as advice and information. Truthful, funny, and knowledgeable! I highly recommend a tour at Cockburns and to ask for Francisco if you can!!
- CathYorkshire00Enormous historic port lodge - with enthusiastic staff as guides.Fascinating tour of this enormous historic port lodge. With over a million litres of port in store it is a sight to behold. The tour includes the chance to see the on site cooperage ( go in a morning if you want to see the men at work) . There is also a small museum telling the story of the brand. Tasting was relaxed and enjoyable. There is a good on site shop too (sadly we were travelling hand luggage only so could only purchase at the airport)
- Ravster11100Just wonderful!Wonderful tour and tasting hosted by our most excellent guide Francisco who made the whole experience wonderful! Many thanks Francisco :-)
- selina201831200Engaging and illuminating.Excellent tour of the cellars and tasting. Our guide was engaging and knowledgeable, we learnt a great deal about not only the history but also how it’s made. The port tasting was generous and illuminating. Worth going along.
- speob00If you're thinking of which port house to tour, it's Cockburn's you want!Did the guided tour and tasting. Very informative, thanks in no small part to the extremely knowledgeable and talented guide/hostess.
- Olof K00Really worth a visitWe visited Cockburns in april -22. Very nice place indeed, with very good staff in nice establishment. We did some testing, and got to choose from a comprehensive list. We tried and bought some very nice 10 year old tawny port and great white wine. Really recommendable altogether, we will certainly visit again.
- Carpo198700Excellent Port Wine tour and tasting in EnglishWe visited as a couple and did the tour of the cellars in English. Our guide was amazing, she was really knowledgable and answered all our questions whilst also being engaging and friendly. We opted for a standard Port tasting and a premium tasting with chocolates to try a broader range of the ports as we shared 5 different drinks. We also added the traditional Portuguese picnic as we visited near lunchtime. The tasting is in a lovely dedicated room and we were talked through each of our samples and the chocolate pairings. All the ports were fantastic quality and having some guidance on what we were trying really helped up appreciate the experience. Throughout the experience we were able to take plenty of photos and see the huge warehouse where they age the port. We were really looked after by all the staff including helping with some selections in the shop. They offer a shipping service which was really useful as we only had carry on luggage with our airline, so had the option to still buy some bottles and have them shipped home.
- PerArdua8300Port HousesA must visit to a Port House. This particular tour was fabulous, the tour guide was very knowledgeable and articulate.
- ElmParkRoyal00Not disappointedAfter a lot of deliberation and comparative research on TA and company websites, we chose the Cockburn's Tour and subsequently felt that we had made absolutely the right choice. We had booked in advance, although, on the day, there was only Mrs EPR and I for our particular timeslot. Consequently, we had our own personal tour which was very thorough and informative. It was conducted by a very personable young guy who had a wealth of knowledge about the company and its product and was able to answer any question with aplomb. The 90 minutes we spent was well-structured and unhurried and took in every aspect of production, as well as Cockburn's history and its development. We concluded with a three port tasting session, alone again, in the clubby upstairs lounge. Certainly a good glassful in each case, with our guide explaining the nuances of each one then leaving us to conclude at our leisure. Earlier, we had travelled from Porto city centre to Vila Nova de Gaia by water taxi (3 Euros, less than 5 minutes duration) and walked up the very steep hill to the Cockburn's property. On return, we walked back down to the riverside to get a cable car up to the Pont Luis Bridge. From there was a brisk walk across the bridge to find the nearby funicular railway to get back down to the Douro waterfront again. A good morning's work for the enthusiastic tourist; every aspect highly recommended.
- Francispmc100Best tour we’ve ever doneI almost said in the title “best wine tour we’ve ever done” but, thinking back, we couldn’t come up with any tour anywhere that was better planned, better guided, or more interesting than the Cockburns tour that we did yesterday. We easily found the cellars by catching the 901 bus which stopped about 5 paces from the front doors. We were ridiculously early, so Ricardo (our guide) suggested that we start with the tasting and then do the 11:00 tour, such that we would be able to fit in some shopping in the centre of Porto if we were so inclined. We went along with his suggestion, which meant that we started with the tasting of some excellent ports and then drifted through the tour proper in a very “merry” mood! For the tour itself, there were only my wife and I in the party, and we had an ideal introduction to the world of port wine making. The creation of the wines, the cooperage, and the storage were all well explained and demonstrated, and we came away with a more complete appreciation of the wine and the processes involved. Initially, we were both going to do the chocolate pairing, but Ricardo suggested that one of us do the chocolate pairing and one do the cheese pairing - that way, we’d get to taste a wider variety of wines and try more permutations. It was a great suggestion, and we only found one that was less than stunning (the “Christmas in a glass” tawny, which I think we just weren’t in the right frame of mind for). Everything else was lovely, and the tour is 100% recommended to anybody who is visiting Porto.
- peachyinthehouse00FantasticMy friend and I visited and had a great time. Whilst the lodge is located at the top of a steep hill, it is worth the climb. The tour was informative and just the right amount of time. The highlight for me was the tasting of the Ports. The lady leading the tasting, Nicole Santos, spoke perfect English (certainly better than mine!), was very knowledgeable and went into great detail on the various types of Port, how they are made and aged. She also made some great recommendations of Port to take home with us, these bottles are now safely home in the US.

Went for a tour and tasting at Cockburn's Port Lodge as a party of 6. The tour was very interesting and informative, learning the history and production of Cockburn's port. Our tour guide was excellent, very engaging and enthusiastic. Had a great tasting covering lots of different styles of port. Everyone really enjoyed themselves. Our expectations were exceeded. A big thanks to the team for looking after us so well.

My wife and I went to Porto for our honeymoon. We loved visiting the Gaia side of the river. It had lights, food, but most of all it had the wonderful Port wine wineries. Cockburns (Co-burns) tour of their winery was the best tour we had. It was informative, it was fun, and at the end we got to have a tasting. They had one that paired the wine with chocolate. They even gave us an extra complimentary wine to taste, because it was our honeymoon. My wife and I took the Gaia gondola back to the top and the light rail back to our hotel. It was peaceful and romantic.

I booked to go on the wine tasting tour through another app, not tripadvisor or the cruise I was on holiday with and I'm glad we booked it.
It was a great price and really good value for money, the man who gave us a guided tour has excellent English and is very knowledgeable - there's nothing he doesn't know about the whole process and the history of Cockburn's, unfortunately I can't remember his name and I don't know how many people work there give tours but if your tour guide is a young dark haired man with a real enthusiasm for his job - then this is the one who took us around.
It wasn't a private tour, I was there with my parents and there were about 4 or 5 other groups of holidaymakers. We were walked around the place where the enormous wine casks were holding thousands of litres of Port Wine which were still being distilled and also along rows of barrels storing Port and ended up at the tasting room. I only went for the basic tasting, the amounts of which were generous, but next time I'll try to food pairings and buy more from the shop at the end.
Back on my ship I got talking to a couple of people who went on other wine tasting excursions that were more expensive and didn't have much of a tour, so I recommended this one to them and would recommend it to anyone visiting this part of Porto. Although its at the top of a very steep hill its still worth the climb.

Tour the largest Port cellar in the area with a knowledgeable and funny guide! Small group experience, very reasonably priced. Learn all about Port wine-making with a wonderful tour and end with a tasting! Super accommodating staff, they stored my large bag during the tour and welcomed me when I arrived a bit early. The wine cellar visit turned out great as the guided tour offered a great value for the money paid.
It was a fascinating experience for us to visit a wine cellar. The tour guide was knowledgeable and answered all the questions. When in Porto, visiting one of the wine cellars should be #1 on your list.
The complete review of my experience is present in my travel blog/website. I have included the package cost, what type of wine is included, how to reach the wine cellar by public transport etc

One of the best experiences in Porto. I would say it is a must if you want to know what port wine is.
Mikheil was a perfect guide, explained everything thoroughly and answered all our questions. He selected fantastic snacks that went with wine during the degustation. Gave us nice recommendations in the wine store.
Looking forward to opening those bottles at home ♥️

Very good but thought the extra charge for 3 small chocolates was a bit steep and it would have been better to try more ports and had less in each glass.
