About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- 376ChrisM3760 contributionsExcellent! We did two walks in Madeira - half day in Mimosa Valley and full day at Rabacal. Booking was straight forward and we got information about pick up times from right outside our hotel the night before each walk. And each walk was excellent. Alvarro was a brilliant guide, very knowledgeable and good humoured (and seemed to know just about everyone we passed!) Mimosa Valley was an easy, fairly level walk along the lavada, Rabacal and the fountains slightly more difficult but Alvarro kept the group together and anyone with a reasonable level of fitness would be able to cope. We were lucky with the weather, dry with temperatures in the mid 20s,perfect walking conditions. If we'd been staying longer we'd certainly have joined more walks - a good enough excuse to go back to Madeira!Written October 1, 2024
- Barco220 contributionsBrilliant walk and excellent guideThis was a fantastic half-day walk led by a brilliant guide, Alvarro (not sure I’ve spelt that right!). We’ve been to Madeira several times but never had a levada walk as we weren’t sure what to expect. We chose the easy/half day walk and it was great. It is in the north east of the island and the countryside spectacular. We followed the very flat levada which skirted around the edge of incredible green valleys where we could see for miles and see amazing terracing used by the local farmers. The walk in itself was great, but Alvarro our guide actually made it for our group. He was incredibly knowledgable about the landscape and wildlife. We stopped many times to look at different trees, fruits, vegetables and he explained so much that I’d never imagined. We walked for about 6km over about 2 hours and we then stopped at a little cafe for coffee and homemade banana and walnut which was superb. The restaurant look down a valley and out to sea. Overall summary - brilliant walk and excellent guide. Many thanks.Written September 12, 2024
- Kevin D0 contributionsFanal forest walkPick up on time once again by our driver alvarro. Our guides for the day was yulia who like the others guides was informative and took us along a relatively easy walk to fanal tree forest. Unfortunately that day the fog didn't come out to plat but cloud could be seen trying to arrive!point to know this walk COULD be risky if thick fig comes in as visibility can be really bad so be mindfull of this if attempted solo./ unguided. End of walk end with a local espetadas meal with salad potatoes ,bread ,wine etc Which was cooked and prepped by alvarro and his wife fatima. Overall an easy don't expect fog for your pics it may not happen. it's also one of the dustiest walks yet that we did.id recommend this trip to see a different aspect of the islandWritten August 18, 2024
- Kevin D0 contributionsPr1 sunrise trekAgain opted for maderia free spirit walks to do the famous sunrise pico to pico tour. We were driven to Pico Do Arierio where our driver allvaro started the day with hot chocolate and homemade cake! This tour take a headlight or torch as to reach the viewing point you need to navigate dark paths. Our guides Maria and sofia made sure we had a good viewpoint for sunrise.basically, it's a wonderful you have to be prepared for a bit of a workout to get to Pico Arivo. The tour however offers a "soft" option which allows you to experience the sunrise then drives you closer to the finish point which STILL requires some legwork but I though it was great of them to offer this and some guests took it. The way we took around was spectacular! Our guides took us along at a steady pace advising us along our way .it has to be said though some people think it's a race you just let them past. After ups and downs and about 5 tunnels you arrive at pico Ruivo and by then very hot and for us this was another good reason to do this tour as opposed to start later in the day. Fully recommend this trip with maderia free spirit walksWritten August 16, 2024
- Kevin D0 contributionsLarano levada walking tourWe stayed in funchal for 2 weeks and decided our 1st tour with maderia free spirits would be their LARANO levado cliff top walk.picked up on time at an arranged spot and drove firstly to machico for a quick toilet stop and opportunity to have coffee then onto the levada walk itself. Suzanna our guide for the day explained well our trip itinerary and along the way highlighted the local area and how the leavadas worked etc..very knowledgeable and very impressive animal impersonator...our very own DR DOLITTLE! Prior to trip I personally had concerns about vertigo as I'm not great with heights but tbh it was not a huge issue the paths are relatively good and some have wired railings. Suzzanna told us where it was safe to stop and where not, not once was I concerned. The end of the walk we ended close to Praia de maiata where george our excellent driver collected us for our last rest stop of the day before return journey to hotel .overall we thoroughly enjoyed the day and if you like dramatic views along the coastline go for itWritten August 16, 2024
- Q1537XOmichaelw0 contributionsStunning hike to Madeira’s highest pointWhat a hike! The views from the top are incredible - but you do have to earn them. This isn’t the easiest of hikes but it sure is worth it. Our guide, Yulya, made everyone feel super safe, was very caring, and also informative about all the local flora and geology. Would thoroughly recommend this tour company to anyone.Written August 1, 2024
- lozzasloan0 contributionsOutstanding customer service and safetyExcellent service from start to finish with this company. Excellent safety advice and guidance. Excellent communication. Excellent customer service. Excellent tour. As a very experienced walker I wanted a reliable company. Maria our guide was outstanding!!! Very knowledgeable and took care of the group perfectly! Please note that this walk is exactly as advertised- it is a challenge, but the company are clear about this.Written July 31, 2024
- Elisabeth Vold B0 contributionsA great day exploringAlvaro was an excellent tour guide and had lots of interesting facts that he shared during our walk. We really enjoyed the hike and will absolutely try one of the other trips the next time we come to Madeira. The Walk it selv was quite flat and you’d have to siffer from severe vertigo or be in really bad shape if you have trouble with this Walk.Written July 22, 2024
- CJ000CJ0 contributionsAmazing Experience, Amazing Views, Amazing Guide (Julia)Wow, wow, wow!! What an experience, I would recommend this to anyone that loves a good view (there are amazing views the whole way round) and is willing to work for it. Our guide, Julia, was amazing - she was very knowledgeable and ensured we and other hikers outside of our group were safe the whole way round. She was also a great laugh and keeping a smile on everyone's face.Written July 11, 2024
- Mohammad Ali A0 contributionsFind another companyNo time or chance to take in the views and look around the place on this tour. Not even a tour it’s more a marathon than anything else. Would not recommend unless you plan on speed running this. Also the tour guide will end up shouting at you and calling you unfit just because you take your time and want to reach the actual peak of the mountain and not their affiliated shop. 1/10.Written June 27, 2024
- Go5961860 contributionsWonderful experience for novice Levada walksWalk with Alvaro and his excellent knowledge, good sense of safety (and sense of humour). Our first Levada walk; very enjoyable. Right pace for us (active 70 year olds), not too slow or fast. Small, quiet group also suited us. Finished at a nice cafe with super coffee and banana cake. Alvaro also made an excellent recommendation for us for the following (our last) day.Written June 11, 2024
- H8789AIseanh0 contributionsAmazing sunrise and hikeThis Free Spirit sunrise Pico Do Areeiro walk was amazing. Spectacular scenery and well worth getting up early for. Iulia, our guide, was very knowledgeable and shared her knowledge of the regions flora with enthusiasm. We watched the sun rise from Pico Do Areeiro. Then were offered hot chocolate and cake before starting the hike to Pico Ruivo. We found hiking at this altitude difficult so opted for the alternative safer and less strenuous walk from Teixeira to meet at Iulia and the group at the top. This was a very enjoyable and scenic walk. We all ended the walk together. A very well organised experience, highly recommended.Written June 7, 2024
- Wanderer411318077830 contributionsLoving Levadas! We went on the Larano Walking Tour on April 18, 2024 which we booked through our hotel. Right from the moment we were picked up Alvaro’s humour and knowledge set the tone for a fun, safe and engaging trek. His love for the outdoors, the area’s history and the local people he interacted with along the route demonstrates his passion for Madeira. If we are fortunate enough to return to Madeira, another walking tour with Alvaro will be on our ‘Must Do’ list.Written April 24, 2024
- thepostie20100 contributionsA tad disappionting-a stoll by a gullyA day trip where we expected more. For a regular walker there is not much to challenge you. The scenery is random when the weather is poor, but that could a off-season problem? Like the rest of the Island there is not a lot of wildlife but the engineering of the levada remains impressive even if this particular walk is underwhelming. Shame really.Written March 9, 2024
- peterB1950 contributionsThe best in the businessWe have just completed 2 walks with this company. Unlike other companies they keep the party size to no more than about 12. Their guides ( Felipe and Suzanna) were excellent combining safety with humour. In addition they have huge knowledge and enthusiasm . They took care to ensure all members of the party were looked after and I would recommend this company as the very best for prompt efficient service and for providing brilliant days out on this beautiful IslandWritten March 6, 2024

Absolutely great company and it was referred to me by a local - excellent value and service picked 6 of us up as a small total group of 15 and dropped us off and our Guide was kind funny and super informative (Alvaro Freitas was amazing informative hilarious and happy!! ). We have done tours all over the world this company was excellent - we will be using them again and I highly recommend them. This was small and concierge service based company compared to the large tour bus groups we’ve done in past. Was wonderful 5stars !!

Even though it was a rainy day to start, Alvaro kept us engaged, pointing out interesting birds, flora and fauna. About halfway through the tour, the clouds and rain parted and the hike was even more enjoyable. The tour company also coordinates things so the walk is easier than it would be if doing it on one's own (they cut out the final leg and have a van meet you and take you to a cafe to end the day). Great experience, wonderful guide!

Very sensible sized group. Our guide Sussana was brilliant. Her knowledge, sense of humour and ability to manage the route and pace was spot on. Her ability to judge the timing to minimise crowding comes in for special praise. This IS a popular walk, so don't expect to be alone. The scenery is stunning and the route is not too strenuous for those of average fitness. The company was very well organised, pickups were on time and they carried spare poles, etc, for those who needed them. Highly recommended.

We have done four of the walks Free Spirit offer and all have been really enjoyable. Both guides, Alvaro and Phillipe are very experienced, have a great sense of humour and very knowledgeable. We were picked up on all four occasions from our hotel on time and in a clean comfortable mini bus. The walks are very scenic and interesting and well worth doing even though the weather wasn't always exactly perfect.
The guides were also very safety conscious as there were some pretty dramatic drops at the side of the lavadas . We will certainly be doing more of Free Spirit walks when we return and can recommend them highly.

Walked February 3rd and 5th 2023
A brilliant company for walking the Levadas in Madeira. We first did the 25 Waterfalls walk with our guide Suzanna, who was knowledgeable, fun and very good at checking everyone was safe, comfortable and happy. The pace was just right for us (both 60 and used to walking), the scenery spectacular and interesting. This walk was such a good one to do as a guided walk as we were dropped at the top of the mountain and picked up further down after an amazing walk with an exciting finish through a long tunnel. If we'd hired a car we'd have been walking back the way we came all uphill and missed the tunnel! There were steps on this walk but again Suzanna encouraged everyone to do these at their own pace (I stopped for a quick breather). The second walk was the King's Levada this was again guided by Suzanna with knowledge of this completely different environment to the waterfall walk, making it interesting and fun. The walk is very easy along the flat paths through a range of plants with a jungle type feeling towards the end. It was a there and back walk and it seemed quite different going back!
Both walks were accompanied with a comfort stop before and after the walk. The hotel pickup was exactly on time for both walks.
We generally do trips independently but I was so pleased to have chosen a guided walk in this case, we learned so much more.
We were very impressed by our guide and the company and would definitely recommend them to anyone wanting to walk some beautiful Levadas.

A great day out walking the Lavada to 25 Founts. Filipe was a good host and guide and kept us all safe. We’re keen walkers so really enjoyed it. It does get busy in summer so be prepared for queues.
Would definitely recommend taking a waterproof jacket, waterproof shoes (as some parts of the walkways are flooded) and a hat as it can be very windy at the start. There’s quite a bit of climbing (steps) and some steep downhills (steps again) so a reasonable level of fitness and mobility is required to ensure you enjoy the experience. There is a toilet stop before the walk, and you can buy lunch if you’ve forgotten, as well as a stop on the way home for poncha.

From pickup to drop off this tour went flawlessly. Susana was a great guide - I was in a group of 9 and she kept everyone together on this busy path. We started a bit early so we were the first group to first waterfall but after that it was busy. She paced our hike well, gave encouragement when needed and also gave information about the plants we saw along the way. I would recommend this tour.

Easy walk down the valley. We had all kinds of age groups and fitness levels in our group and everyone made it. The Risco waterfall is more stunning than the 25 Fonts and the latter is overcrowded. The government recently widened the pavement along the levada so now its more comfortable. Our guide gave us plenty of information on the flora and fauna of the area. The pictures others have posted with flowery plants in them must have been taken in the spring/summer - in September when we went there was only greenery.

Wonderful walk. Experienced guide who looked after her customers. Stunning waterfalls. Lots of steps. Went to cafe for a relax/reward post walk. The cafe had good poncha, coffee, snacks and enjoyed stunning views.

The trip hike itself was gentle and scenic. Organization-wise, it was well put together, Susanna explained everything succinctly so we always knew what was happening. In my case, I was particularly pleased by the service as, upon hearing I was interested in the Pico do Arieiro walk but was running out of time, she managed to find a opening and prompt if I'd be interested in it all while we were walking. Couldn't have asked for a better experience.

How long is the walk itself if the trip duration is 4 hours 30? Does that include travel time?
Written January 24, 2022
The walk is around 4 hours. Travel time is on top. From Funchal I think it was around an hour and a bit to get to the start point, including a coffee stop. There is also a coffee stop on the way back. So plan for an all day event. The guide, Susannah was superb.
