    What to Expect
This walk begins at the Queimadas Forest Park at 980 meters above sea level, in the municipality of Santana, next to a shelter house with thatched roof, seems taken from a fairy tale. It is in the Laurissilva Forest, where you can enjoy a wide variety of plant species, some to highlight are the Stinklaurel (Ocotea foetens), the Laurel (Laurus novocanariensis), the Lily-of-the-Valley Tree (Clethra arborea), Common European Elder (Sambucus lanceolata), between others.

The most visible bird species are the Chaffinch, the Firecrest, the Grey Wagtail, the Buzzard and with luck the Long-toed Wood Pigeon. As we walk along the Levada we find ourselves in a green and pleasant landscape. After passing by 4 natural tunnels, existing along the way, we find the beautiful Caldeirão Verde, a waterfall whose water falls in a beautiful lagoon of emerald green color. After appreciating this natural landscape, we go round the same track back to Queimadas Forest Park.

Lovely day spent walking the levada from Queimadas to the Caldeirao Verde. Well worth going for the views but mind where you tread... the levada walls are treacherously narrow in parts and its a long drop. Take along a packed lunch with you! Walk could...More
