About
Las Isletas are a group of 365 small islands scattered around a peninsula. The islands are of volcanic origin, they were formed thousands of years ago and are mostly covered with vegetation and rich with bird life.
The kayak makes it possible to go into shallow water and get close to the flora and fauna, especially the bird life. You do not have the noise from the motor boats so you can enjoy peace and quietness on the water.
You will also encounter locals fishing between the islands, looking for their daily lunch. The guide will make this an unforgettable experience.

About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Lylliam M0 contributionsNiceIt was my mom, me, my sister and 2 of my cousins who went on this tour. It was great! They picked us up from a location point I picked, which was a hotel, and dropped us off of course. They picked us up from a very nice van then we switched to a 4x4 to get to the volcano and then same on the way back. On the way back we did share the 4x4 with a couple but it was alright. The views are very nice and the air feels great.Written January 23, 2025
- brianrN5505EF0 contributionsbuenas vistasExcellent views of the surrounding area. Gustavo is a treasure. Walked around the entire crater. Saw a lot of great flora but very little fauna. School kids were visiting and were loud and disruptive, scaring off monkeys and any other silvan denizens we were hoping to glimpe that morning.Written November 24, 2024
- ninawN9381UG0 contributionsGreat Tour with an even better guideWe had a great tour with Gustavo. He was a great guide and could tell us a lot about the nature, animals and Nicaragua itself. It was very exciting, informative and Mombacho is simple beautiful. The zipline afterwards was also a lot of fun and far longer than we expected.Written July 16, 2024
- Justine_Sade0 contributionsService depends on the tour you getWe've contacted Tierra Day Tours as we wanted a day tour of Leon and as well a transport from Leon to Granada with a stop at the Masaya Volcano in the night. The tour in Leon was 25$ per person, included the entrance fees (to the rooftop of the Cathedral and to the Museum of Legends on Traditions. Our guide was originally from Leon and he walked us nicely through the city for around 2 and a half hours. We started the tour with going to the mural painting done by the school kids that depicted the history of the indigenous tribes and Nicaragua so far. We then went by car to see a few churches which were unfortunately closed and ended up looking more the the walls with bullets in them than the architecture of the building itself. Then we went for more than an hour at the Museum of Legends and Traditions which used to be a jail for the revolutionaries. We ended up in the Cathedral being explained several important tombs and up to the rooftop to take a few lovely pictures. A nice tour but would have liked to see a bit more of the actual city and maybe less of the small jail which they transformed into a museum. Also did not really liked the fact that the guide and the driver stayed in the car while they explained the mural history for around 20-25 minutes. I understand it was hot outside but I would have rather walked by the wall as it was shade enough to sit and admire the paintings from upfront close. Felt a bit weird to move with the car as if we could not go out it was too dangerous it gave you that feeling. A decent tour like I said but can definitely be improved. The second tour we took was the Masaya volcano by night and drop off in Granada. The same driver we had in Leon took us back to Granada. We looked up online and the drive is for around 2 hours. The volcano for the night tour opens at around 5 so we kind of questioned when the driver insisted to pick us up from Leon at 2 but then we said OK they should know better as they are local. We explicitly told the driver we are not interested in seeing the volcano by day as we already have done that a few days before but somehow we did not understand us and before 4 we were already at the entrance of the gate for the volcano. We hired a driver to take us trough Nicaragua and we know the roads are not the safest (especially by night) so we were expecting our driver having to deal with foreigners to be more cautious. Not the case, he was speeding, overtaking when it was not very safe just to get to the volcano sooner. To be completely fair I though he believed if we have to wait more than an hour we will just give up and go to our hotel in Granada. Not our wish as we said ok and we waited in the car for the night entrance to open. I saw on his face he was not very happy about out chill decision, but then when you pay 89$ per person to see something then I will not hold back on my desire just because somebody is inpatient. We finally managed to see the volcano by night which I would recommend to anybody as one in a lifetime experience so definitely not to be missed. Our way back to Granada was in the same unsafe drive back. When we wanted to get in the hotel the driver came to me after I paid acting in a way as if I haven't given him the right amount of money, though he was the one who handed me the receipt in the morning from the agency. Was a very weird moment after the whole weird day to be fair. All in all a bit disappointed with the service they provided both in Leon (could do for a much more interesting city tour) and the area. To be fair not sure if I would recommend them to anyone visiting Nicaragua or I would tell to look the other way for a different tour operator.Written January 21, 2019
- Virtuousbread0 contributionsExcellent service. Responsive and professional.Anthony, and the entire team at Tierra Tours was fantastic from our first contact when we were still in El Salvador, to when we left. They helped us organize crossing into Nicaragua from El Salvador, trips when we were in Leon and in Granada, transfers here and there. 100% punctual, reliable, and friendly. They were fantastic.Written December 16, 2018
- gethoen0 contributionsGreat experience to the Masaya volcano with Tierra toursWe booked a trip with Tierra tours last week to the Masaya volcano. We booked a night tour. The tour guide spoke English perfectly! On forehand it was very clear to us what the schedule would be. An hour drive, about an hour wait, max 15 minutes there because of the gases and then an hour back. It was definitely worth it! We thought it was an amazing experience!Written April 15, 2018
- Jea2010 contributionsMasaya volcanoGranada Tierra Tours I think our tour guides name was Lionel and he did a great job. Made sure we were the first group to see the volcano and knew his Nicaraguan history. He spoke english very well and made sure we were all taken care of.Written April 1, 2018
- 2s0j0urn0 contributionsDisorganized and unreliable tour outfit - there are much better ones!Lonely Planet recommends this tour operator which is why we stepped into their shop and booked a tour with them. However, we do not agree with LP in this instance and suggest the LP writers revisit Tierra Tours to update their rating. First, when booking the tour, the agent couldn't find on his desk the booking paperwork he needed! Second, we told him several times the name of the hotel at which we were staying and he wrote it down on the booking sheet but, at the time of pick-up, there was no Tierra driver at our hotel to collect us! We waited 20-minutes and then called and they said they were waiting for us to call and confirm the pick-up point (clearly, they'd either lost the paperwork or couldn't read the hotel name which was clearly written at the top of the booking sheet!) Our kayak tour was fine (also reviewed here) but, the same thing happened again after the tour, ie. the Tierra Tour driver failed to collect us! This time we were waiting, hot, wet, and and hungry for one hour before the driver finally showed! This is unacceptable. The tour operator had to do little in this instance except alert the kayak outfit and provide drivers. They made the call to the kayak agency but completely failed at their end to provide transportation in a timely manner. Very disappointed! Suggest booking through Leo tours instead.Written April 1, 2018
- Tatiana K0 contributionsNight Tour Masaya VolcanoSee this beautiful tour description: "An adventure you will never forget! Watch parrots returning to their unusual home… inside Santiago's active crater! Take a walk into the heart of the earth through laves tube while three different species of bats fly over your head." That was the only reason I booked that tour - and that "adventure" never happened. If I could only knew that that was a lie, I wouldn't booked a tour, you do not need it, the only thing you need is a driver to drive you to a lookout, wait for 15 minutes for you and drive you back.Written March 19, 2018
- Douglas P0 contributionsGreat tours and guide.Walked the streets of Granada looking for local tours. Selected Tierra as they looked the most professional. Met Gustavo who explained in detail what we should expect. We booked two tours. Gustavo led both. He was charming and knowledgeable. We would be more than happy to recommend both him and his company.Written March 16, 2018
- krawner0 contributionsStraightforward and easy to useBooked the Masaya volcano night tour with Tierra Tours. They warned me in advance that it’s an hour drive, an hour wait to enter the park, and then only 15 minutes viewing time, followed by 1 hour drive back. I liked that they were honest. They also had daily kayaking trips to the Isletas. Other companies didn’t have enough participants to run the trip every day. Tour guide spoke decent English.Written March 9, 2018
- naomijacobs19840 contributionsMombacha ‘hike’So for $ 35 per person you are taken by shuttle to the top of the Mombacho vulcano. It is said that the climb is around 2,5 hours and is mainly focussing on wildlife... The driver forgot to pick us up so an additional taxi was arranged. Once we arrived 45 minutes later the guide (who spoke good English) took us around the crater. It was a walk of 1h15m. We had bad luck with the weather but the guide told us that around the crater there is no wildlife.... To see wildlife you actually have to stay in the lowlands and not at the top of the crater. All in all; if you like a 1 hour on a paved trail around the crater to see trees, plants and some flowers then this is your tour! If you’d like to see actual wildlife and do some off road hiking (which was promised to us) then this is NOT the tour to book!Written February 17, 2018
- Superlew0 contributionsGood company - recommended! We did several tours with Tierra - they offer a lot of variety, and I wanted to keep things simple during our time in Nicaragua. We did the Mombacho Xpress, which was fun and informative. We had booked it leaving at 12:30, but they arrived at 9:30 - surprise! Thankfully we were at our guest house and it wasn't a huge deal. TT was very apologetic. We then had a private tour of Masaya, which was excellent. Volcano boarding was great fun! A few things to know before you go. We had our 8 year old son with us. The board was too heavy for him to carry up the volcano, especially in the wind - my husband had to carry it. This is not a leisurely hike. You're carrying a board that essentially acts like a sail, making for some exciting moments. That said, the views were some of the most beautiful I've ever seen in my life, and our guide David was FANTASTIC. We had a great time actually sledding down, and very safe. Our final tour was of the mangroves in Leon. The real star of this tour was our boat captain, who maneuvered us in and out of tight areas, spotted caimans in the water, etc. Our tour guide on this one was more of an escort. She was very nice, but unable to tell us anything about what we were seeing. All in all, we were very pleased with Tierra Tours.Written January 30, 2018
- christinalouisa20080 contributionsQuality depends on tour guideWe booked two tours through Tierra Tours. The people at the office are very friendly and knowledgable. Our first tour was with Leo to Las Isletas. We really enjoyed the boatride through the islets and Leo was a fun tourguide and had nice stories about the area. So 4 stars for Leo! Our second tour was the evening tour to the Masaya volcano. This tour was rather dissapointing. I felt like our tour guide (he didn’t introduce himself) didn’t feel like being on the tour. All the info he gave us felt like he was reading from a piece of paper and when we quickly visited the museum he hardly said anything. At the top, we had 15 minutes to look at the lava (which was hardly visible). Honestly, I would not recommend this tour. If the tour could be expanded with a proper visit to the museum so you can get proper background info on the area, the tour would be more worthwhile. In conclusion: Tierra Tours is a dependable operator, however, the quality of the tours is determined by the tour guides.Written January 28, 2018
- Traveller_Tara20 contributionsOk Hike, be Prepared for Hours of WaitingMy boyfriend and I hiked Mombacho xpress with Tierra tours during our time in Nicaragua. We were told to prepare for a 4 hour hike picking us up at 9:30. We were picked up and driven to a coffee plantation and given some info about the farmers and families in the area- and spent around 30 min just waiting around there. Then we were driven part way up the mountain where we waited more (fine but we didn’t realize we didn’t hike whole mountain and it’s now 11:15 and we still haven’t started hike). Then we drive up to main where hike will start. Our original guide pointed out our route for mountain and told us our guide was still trekking and to wait 10 min. 35ish min latter our guide comes for us and we didn’t hike until after 12:00. The hike was pretty, lots of knowledge given about the flora and fauna but you do hike a lot on wooden steps/ boards All of this would have been fine had I known we would be spending so much of the day waiting around.Written January 23, 2018
