We just returned from a six-night stay in Nicaragua in early August with 17 family members in all, spanning three generations. We relied on Rodolfo (aka, “Rudy”) for our roundtrip airport transfers to/from our resort -- as well as two full days of excursions.

With respect to the roundtrip airport transfers, Rudy’s drivers (both named Marvin) were punctual and courteous -- for the return trip to the airport, we arrived with plenty of time to navigate the gridlock that is Managua airport. The buses that Rudy provided comfortably fit all 17 of us, including our luggage -- and the air-conditioning worked great (a huge plus in the stifling heat).

We booked two different tours with Rudy, The first was the Granada City + Isletas Tour. Granada is Rudy’s hometown and so he knows it like the back of his hand. In the morning, he took us on a walking tour of the city, showing us the main sites in the city. We then stopped off at a local bistro for a delicious lunch before heading to Lake Nicaragua for a boat tour of the Isletas de Granada. I highly recommend this tour for anyone wanting to experience Granada.

The second tour was a nighttime visit to the Masaya Volcano. Before we visited the volcano, Rudy took us to Catarina, which gives you amazing views of Laguna de Apoyo (a volcanic lake) down below -- see the photo I posted with the review. You can take postcard-quality photos of the lake from here. After Catarina, we went to the Masaya Arts & Crafts Market to do some shopping. We finished the tour at the Masaya Volcano, which was the highlight of the excursion, with the lava bubbling down below. Because the tour ended at night, we asked Rudy to take us to a nice restaurant in Managua for dinner -- it was a delicious meal and a welcome change from the food we were eating at the resort.

Having previously lived in the U.S. for a decade, Rudy’s English is impeccable and he is able to explain things to American tourists in a way that they will easily understand. He deftly handled the many questions we threw at him about Nicaragua (we knew very little before our trip). Rudy was also very good about showing us an unvarnished “real” look at Nicaragua without any sugar-coating -- something that many in our group appreciated. Sometimes you will run into guides that are only willing to talk about the good things about their country. Not Rudy, who wanted to show us both good and not-so-good.

The best part about hiring Rudy was how responsive he is. Even though we peppered him with daily e-mails about our airport transfers and excursions, he was quick to respond via e-mail each and every time. I cannot say the say for some of his competitors in Nicaragua, some of whom took days to respond to e-mail inquiries. As mentioned in some of the other reviews, please note that Rudy will require a 50% deposit before confirming a booking -- this is customary and perfectly fine, so no need to worry.

Trust me -- if you book Rudy at Nicaragua Escapade, you will be extremely thankful that you did -- Rudy is amazing!

Rodolfo set up a night tour of the volcano at Masaya. It was incredible!!! If you do nothing else, do this tour. Rodolfo also handled quite a bit of transportation for us. His drivers were friendly, personable, always on time, and, most of all, safe drivers. Thank you, Rodolfo, for all your help.

It is very important for us to provide the best service no matter how small the service is, Masaya Volcano at night is most definetely somehting to do while in Nicaragua. Our drivers are all well experienced and we provide the best vehicle possible for the comfort of out clients, i am glad that everything went great for you, thanks for your business

Rudy and Nicaragua Escapade made our trip to Granada phenomenal. We did three day trips with Rudy over the course of three days: The first was the Granada city tour to get our bearings, on the second day we went to Mombacho/Laguna de Apoyo and finished with the Classic Masaya tour. All were great, including Laguna which exceeded expectations. Rudy did a great job of connecting with three generations of my family and sharing all aspects of Nicaragua for which he is very proud. Having gone to high school in the States, Rudy's English is flawless and he is able to cross culturally relate his experiences in the US to those in Nicaragua. Ask him to take you to the fish restaurant with the dirt floor in the outskirts of town. It was one of our most memorable meals in Nicaragua and one that you will never find on your own.

Wow, where do I start with this company. When we were planning our trip to Nicaragua, I really did not want to drive- I'm not big on driving in foreign country's where I don't know the laws, how the roads are, etc. We had been told about a few other companies, but the transportation was SO expensive. Then I stumbled upon Nicaragua Escapade in a Trip Advisor Forum. I was a little worried because they did not have their own Trip Advisor site (now they finally do- awesome!). But their prices were incredibly reasonable, and they offered many different trips, so we decided to look into it.

I probably emailed back and forth with Rodolfo, the owner, 20-30 times before we even made a reservation. We kept changing our itinerary as other parts of our trip changed. He was very patient with us, and every time responded politely, happy to give us the information we needed. I got the sense that he really wanted to help us make our trip great. Even after we finally committed to our reservation and paid the deposit, we had to make a change, which he graciously accommodated.

We ended up using him for 3 private transports (San Carlos to Granada, Granada to San Juan del Sur, and then San Jorge to the Managua Airport), as well as a full day tour of Masaya. We were lucky enough to have the same driver, Julio, for all 4 items. Julio was friendly, funny, and generally interested in making sure we were enjoying our trip. We really enjoyed meeting him! Ramon, our guide for the Masaya tour, was like a walking history book. I don't think there was anything about the history of Nicaragua that he didn't know. When the tour was over, he even offered to accompany us on a horse-drawn carriage tour of Granada to give us more history. They also stopped by a Liquor store for me so I could buy my Flor de Cana. They went above and beyond to make sure we were happy.

All in all, I would say booking with Nicaragua Escapade was one of the best decisions of our trip. Their pricing was INCREDIBLE compared to the other companies. For one of the drives, they had to drive 5 hours to pick us up in San Carlos, then 5 hours back to Granada. They go all over Nicaragua (even to the Corn Islands on the East Coast), so make sure you look them up when you are planning your trip!

Where to start...
My best friend and I did a girl’s trip to Nicaragua. After playing around trying to find options for airport transfer and excursions I came across Nicaraguan Escapade on travel advisor, after reading the amazing reviews I decided to go with them. I reached out to Rodolfo and his response was quick. Communication was constant between us leading up to our trip. I voiced what we would like to do and he was quick to come up with a customised itinerary for us. He will ask for a western union, THIS IS FINE. There is no need to be concerned. Paypal is not set up in Nicaragua and as any tour you book, asking for some sort of payment at booking is normal.
From the beginning of Rodolfo and Francisco picking us up the airport we knew we were in great hands and were about to embark on an amazing trip. They are both welcoming and charismatic gentleman. They were reliable, punctual and everything else you would want in a guide.
From touring Leon, Granada, hiking volcano’s, visiting lagoons, horse carriage rides and boat rides... They went over and beyond for us in every way. Rodolfo and his team blew our expectations out of the water. As far as we were concerned choosing Nicaraguan Escapade is what made our trip! Rodolfo’s passion for his country comes across clearly when he talks about the history, you can’t help but get hypnotised and invested.
Travelling as 2 girls in a different country safety is always a concern. I can’t emphasize enough how safe we felt on all our time with Rodolfo and team. Even when it came to us hiking up Cero Negro and boarding down it.. My friend and I were panicking. Rodolfo and Francisco felt this and were so amazing; they made the hike with us and went down with us. I can honestly say if it wasn’t for them we would have chickened out and missed out one of the most amazing experiences of our lives. They were so unbelievably supportive!!
I could seriously go on and on about our experience with Rodolfo and Nicaraguan Escapade as a hole. As someone who considers herself well traveled, this by far has been my favourite trip and hands down the BEST touring experience. You will not be disappointed, I promise! I would go back to experience more of Nicaragua in a heartbeat and it is all because of Nicaraguan Escapade. They left us wanting more.
When you’re lucky enough to share an experience like this with amazing people as they are, these people stay in your heart. We are so thankful and consider ourselves blessed to have had our Nicaraguan adventure with Nicaraguan Escapade.

We are a retired couple from Canada and initially contacted Rodolfo based on comments from Trip Advisor. He was very quick to respond and he worked really well with us to understand our travel needs. After many email exchanges, Rodolfo created an exceptional itinerary for our 2 months in Nicaragua that met our expectations for cultural experiences, enjoyment of the natural environment and experiencing all the regions of Nicaragua, while staying within our budget.
We met several drivers during our time, all whom were polite, friendly and went out of their way to ensure a safe, enjoyable trip. Fransisco was the primary driver, and was fantastic. He speaks pretty good English and he took us on little side trips to see local sights and try local food. When Rodolfo counsel to be with us indifferent regions, he arranged for expert local guides, all who spoke great English to accompany us.
Our itinerary consisted of 3 weeks in a small house in Granada, with several day excursions to surrounding sights. Then we took to ferry to Ometepe, where we stayed in a lovely hotel on the beach for 4 nights. Then we flew to San Carlos and travelled down the Río San Juan River, staying for 2 nights in the Sabolas Lodge. Highly recommended! From there we went to the Solentnames Islands for a couple of nights, then on to Selva Negra Lodge, in the mountains north of Matagalpa. In our opinion this is a must do, one of the highlights. Selva Negra is a self sustaining Eco lodge, where you can learn about coffee, farming and enjoy hiking on their numerable trails through the forest. Then we went on to Leon for 19 days, which was also great but I wouldn't recommend staying there more than a week or 10 days. We had a short stay in San Juan Del Sur, a lovely little surfing town we would also recommend as a must do. From there we stayed one night in Managua before flying home. All hotels, tours, fees were included in the price.
I haven't gone into great detail about everything we did, but to summarize I would just like to say the trip went without a hitch, Rodolfo was on top of things the whole time, and it was a great experience. We would definitely recommend Rodolfo to our friends. Don't worry about the cash deposits, that's just the way it is!

From the very first email to the end of our journey was a wonderful experience with Rodolfo at Escapade!
Rodolfo will provide you a joyful, carefree vacation in any and all areas of Nicaragua. He is the most accommodating tour guide that we have ever had the pleasure of meeting. He has an energetic and fun personality and is sensitive to everyone’s needs.
He is extremely knowledgeable and if you are the least bit apprehensive about your visit or a particular aspect of a tour, he is quick to answer questions, and tailor it to your wants and needs. And a big plus is that he is fluent in English and Spanish.
My husband, I and our 2 teen daughters had arranged transportation as well as all tours with Rodolfo. His driver picked us up at The Springs Resort in Costa Rica. We were worried about the border crossing but all went well.
His driver, Roberto, was kind and polite. Rodolfo was early every day, eager and ready to show us a good time. He had to wait on us on several occasions but was still his patient and cheerful self. He has a passion for the history and culture of his country and we learned so much.
WHAT WE DID IN 4 DAYS: (You can tell that Rodolfo has been doing this for a long time as these tours were very well organized.)
Granada (Tour Isletas) Our Horse Carriage ride and boat ride on the beautiful Lake Nicaragua was very enjoyable.
City tour of Grenada: We toured the city along with spectacular views from the La Merced Church Tower. Great stop for lunch at a local restaurant, fantastic food. On to Choco Museo. I almost backed out of this one but glad we didn’t. It was loads of fun for all. Chocolate making was much more involved than we had imagined.
Masaya Volcano, Arts and Crafts Market, Catarina, Laguna de Apoyo.- The views of the crater at Masaya are unbelievable. The pottery town was interesting. We especially liked swimming in the Laguna and going paddle boarding for the first time.
City tour of Leon. There was a special procession to honor the Virgin Mary that day so we had the pleasure of viewing it. The city is very interesting and we toured some unusual museums.
There was so much more that we wanted to see and do. Last night on the Travel Channel with Samantha Brown, they were featuring Nicaragua and we saw the same guy who taught us how to make chocolate! We had such a great trip.
Thank you, Rodolfo. We really enjoyed your company and we will spread the word of your beautiful country and wonderful services. We hope to return soon.

This is the third time I have used the services of Nicaragua Escapade Day Tours/Rodolfo Ortega. And for the third time every transport and tour he arranged for our family of four was absolutely flawless. Rodolfo has earned my trust and confidence, and I will always book what every I need in Central America through him. He is hands down the best guide in Granada and Nicaragua. He can tailor a tour to whatever your needs are. He offers full local, national (Nicaragua), and comprehensive Central American, tours and transportation. I trust his good judgement, he knows his business and really can help you arrange tours and accomodations to fit your budget, and tastes. I cannot say enough about his great service. Gracias Rodolfo, email him at rodolfo.nicaragua@hotmail.com. Also for the novice traveler he is completely fluent in both English and Spanish.

My husband and I travelled to Nicaragua from July 4 - July 12, 2014. We hired Rodolfo for transportation to and from the Barcelo Montelimar (that's another review and not a good one) and for two day tours.

Upon arriving in Managua, Rodolfo and his driver, Juan, were waiting for us. We were greeted warmly by both. The hour and a half drive to Montelimar went by quickly as Rodolfo talked a lot about the country. By the way, Rodolfo's English is perfect.

The first day trip we took was to Masaya volcano. It was beautiful! The Masaya market was pretty cool too. It was definitely a highlight of our trip.

The second day trip was to Granada and las Isletas. My husband wasn't feeling well so he bailed on this one. Rodolfo also had a conflict so he sent another tour guide, David, in his place. David spoke English but we chose to do the tour in Spanish so I could practice. Granada is a beautiful city! David was great too. He answered all of my questions and was very patient. David had another tour so Juan, the driver, brought me back to Montelimar. If you speak Spanish, I highly recommend you strike up a conversation with Juan. He's such an interesting guy and he loves to talk about his country! I have to say that both my husband and I will miss Juan!

On our last day, Juan picked us up on time for the drive back to the airport. He stopped several times for photos and also to try some sugar cane. We were a little early so he showed us some more of Managua before dropping us off.

I highly recommend Rodolfo for your trip to Nicaragua. He will ask you to send half of the money via Western Union when you book with him. I was a little nervous about this but he's an honest guy! Don't worry! And ask for Juan as a driver! You won't regret it!

I used Rodolfo several times for a recent trip to Nicaragua on which I took my husband, mother, and stepfather. We went to a baseball game, which was a last-minute request from me that Rodolfo accommodated beautifully. I have traveled all over the world utilizing a large number of local guides and found Rodolfo to be absolutely at the top of the heap in terms of our experiences.

Clearly his personality and friendliness are top-rate, but here are a few other things that set Rodolfo apart:

-Knowledge. Not just his knowledge of his home of Granada, its history, but also the fact that he literally seems to know every person in the city. I felt like we were touring with the mayor. :)

-Flexibility. We were staying a bit off the beaten path (on Laguna de Apoyo), and Rodolfo was kind enough to let us drop in to pick up groceries a couple of times as well as once asking the driver just to wait down the street for us while we had dinner so that we wouldn't then have to take a cab home!

-Professionalism. Rodolfo always showed up in a well-maintained van with functioning A/C, with a professional driver experienced in the tour industry. He was impeccably professional, as were his drivers, at all times.

-Listening. Rodolfo really tries to understand, from the moment he meets you, who you are and what you are interested in. For example, my husband is a chef and we are big "foodies". Rodolfo made sure to let us know where to go at the Masaya market to try a local specialty, and he took us to a local restaurant that tourists don't usually go to because he knew we would want a more authentic experience. Best of all, the day we left, he made a special trip to our house to bring us his aunt's homemade nacatamales!! He really went above and beyond in every respect, every day that we spent with him (and even those that we didn't).

We can't say enough great stuff about Rodolfo.
