About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- malaika_butler0 contributionsGo-to for kayaking excursion! We visit Chincoteague almost annually and this is going to be another regular for us! Mom and pop owned, relaxing and good conversation even though it was just her and I kayaking. Very knowledgeable about the area and the ecosystem. Very great recommendation for a group trip or solo with the instructor.Written August 21, 2024
- GoPlaces298535952610 contributionsBirthday cruiseGreat afternoon with Captain John. We saw lots of dolphins up close. Ponies in the distance. Beautiful scenery. Would definitely recommend.Written August 19, 2024
- Voyager4234130 contributionsBest darn Captain for an awesome island tour !The tour was really exciting ! Captain John was very knowledgeable, with a very cool personality . He took us to many sights close up and explained all the interesting features from where the ponies are, where the pony swim and auction take place, the oyster beds, where the bay meets open water, the lighthouse, Barrier Island with the birds, Mariners' Memorial Cross, and sunset views in stages all along the way. We took so many beautiful scenic photos to enjoy for a lifetime.Written August 12, 2024
- Ethan8970 contributionsAmazing tour!Amazing tour! This tour was the best thing we did during our stay in Chincoteague. We didn’t set our hearts on dolphins knowing the are wild animals and there is no guarantee that we will see them but we actually did! A dozen or so! The Captain stopped his boat and let them play all over the boat while we were admiring the scene and taking photos. It was unbelievable experience. Much more than expected.Written July 9, 2024
- aries47800 contributionsGreat birdwatching boat tourTour was amazing, took us to a lot of great bird watching spots! Saw a lot of great birds and even dolphins! Couldn’t have asked for a better day!Written July 5, 2024
- lynnhT8080WH0 contributionsYou Don’t want to miss this opportunity!!The captain is so kind and knowledgeable. He was patient and stayed as close to these beautiful animals as possible without disturbing them. Absolutely 💯 the best tour. It’s a must.Written June 26, 2024
- cooperk1900 contributionsOur own private islandMy wife, dog, and I motored off to an island just across from Curtis Merritt Harbor. It is full of nesting shore birds but they did not bother us unless we walked a little too close and they got very vocal. There was a large contingent of pelicans and other birds I have never seen before. We set up camp for an hour and a half and enjoyed nice breezes, beautiful views, nice walks and a swim. Flies were a little annoying in the shade but bug spray kept them at bay. Current is a bit strong so didn’t venture too far out. Capt John and his wife Basia were great hosts. We also bought two shells from their lovely little daughter. I would highly recommend a water taxi or boat tour at this family run business.Written June 25, 2024
- 251corinnek0 contributionsBest way to see the ponies by farWhat an awesome trip. No better way to see the ponies. Our guide was wonderful. She was so helpful and full of stories. She got us so close to the ponies and spotted dolphins. We paddled on a double kayak which was really comfortable and stable. Appreciated that the guide even switched us to an earlier slot a few days before because she wanted us to have a good experience with the tides and temp. Knows her stuff and takes you on a great trip! A must do in Chincoteague.Written June 23, 2024

- brdgbldr10 contributionsGreat trip!Excellent tour. John was very knowledgeable. Booked for Sunday but bad weather coming so they allowed us to change to Saturday. Saw dolphins and ponies. Great trip.Written May 13, 2024
- Mariamart920 contributionsGreat tour, amazing viewsAmazing tour on the water in Chincoteague by Assateague. We saw so many birds, dolphins, and got a great history lesson as well. Wish we had seen some ponies but we didn't get that lucky! Our captain was very knowledgable and helpful!Written October 24, 2023
- 205kirbya0 contributionsGreat birding tour!John was amazing guide. He got us close to lots of birds without disturbing them and gave me time to get good lucks at the shorebirds and other oddities. Somehow he also managed to get us the best views we had all week of dolphins AND ponies as well. And the boat is very comfortable and quick. If you're a birder, this is worth the money.Written August 15, 2023
- elizabethpA1777HZ0 contributionsAugust tourOur guide was wonderful. Very knowledgeable and informative. She also understood that not everyone was as athletic. I am 51 and not in great shape but she was able to slow down at times without signaling me out. Got within 15 feet of the horses and saw bald eagles right overhead. My 13 year old son had a great time as well.Written August 10, 2023
- Ethan8970 contributionsSuper fun day at the little beach!Super fun day on a private beach! It was a 10-15 minute boat ride to the private beach. Super nice, comfy, clean boat, super nice Captain. He dropped us of on a "little beach" where you can get to only by water so it was very secluded, matter of fact for a little while it was only us. We had the whole becah for ourselves! It was a cool spot with nothing there... just water, trees and sand. Quiet and peaceful. We loved it! The Captain picked us up when we were ready. We had a blast!Written August 7, 2023

Captain John and his Wife/Daughter are the best people!! They are friendly and were more than accommodating when Scheduling our Tour, as we were coming from Ohio and the weather was uncertain for the day we booked, as well. Captain John is not only informative along the way, but took us to where he knew the ponies would be....and he was right! We saw so many that day, and he circled around to allow us to see them again, before our tour was over. I would recommend over and over, taking their tour, over any others in the area!!!! They are a smaller Business in the area, and I believe in supporting small Businesses, but even more-so, I believe in creating personal service, which they go out of their way to do!! If looking to book a tour, please believe this will be the best you will find! Thank You for one of the best experiences we have had while traveling to different places, we would certainly do it again, if back at Assateague Island!!!!

Captain John and Basia were FANTASTIC!! My young daughter has a fear of boats but both John and Basia were so kind and caring in allowing my daughter to feel comfortable sitting on the boat before we left. Our tour was amazing! As a native of the area, John has so much knowledge and he happily answered all of our questions. We stopped off at Little Beach (only reachable by boat) to explore for a bit as well. Yes, we saw the ponies along with all sorts of varieties of birds and the lighthouse as well. My daughter had SO much fun and we are grateful to John and Basis for making our trip such a wonderful experience!!!

Our boat tour was awesome! The weather was perfect and Captain John did an excellent job of navigating and narrating the tour. We saw a few wild horses and many different species of birds, including pelicans that took off in unison from a small island in the bay only to circle around and land, putting on quite a show.
Highly recommend the tour!

This tour was amazing. The weather was not going to be so ideal for the time we initially picked online and the tour guide was kind enough to let us know the night before and changed it to a time when the weather would be better. The boat driver is from this area, has lived her his entire life and so knew a lot of valuable information about the area. He took us all along the island. We saw over 50 horses and had we not taken this tour we would not have seen then at all. I would highly recommend this tour and so grateful for the experience!

This boat tour was AWESOME! Captain John was extremely pleasant, professional and knowledgeable. We spent two hours seeing ponies and all sorts of other wildlife (including a baby bald Eagle in its nest!) and hearing wonderful stories of the islands and its residents. The small group in this very nice triple pontoon also made the tour an excellent experience and well worth the cost. We will definitely book this again for our next trip to Chincoteague!!

This trip was amazing! John, the operator, was so knowledgeable about the wildlife and the ocean creatures. We saw wild ponies close up, dolphins, a stingray, cormorants, and pelicans. It was so much fun and I would highly recommend this for anyone. It’s a small boat so only 6 people can go at a time which was great!

Captain John took us out and about seeing Assateague and Chincoteague Islands. He took us to where we saw dolphins in a large pod, Bald Eagles, and wild ponies grazing. We also saw Wallops Island. He’s a lifelong resident with extensive knowledge of the area and the wildlife. If you want a quality boat tour, this one will not disappoint!

The is a great company. So much care was taken to give us the best experience. There was a good possibility of rain but they called us several times to switch our time around to avoid a downpour. Captain John was very knowledgeable about the area, friendly and interesting. Top knotch!

Captain John did a fantastic job. He pointed out wildlife of interest, talked about the the geographic layout of the seaways, and told us about the ponies. He tried very hard to show us the ponies by looking through his binoculars regularly to find them but they were no show. Not a problem since the trip was lovely and very chill. captain John is very knowledgeable and answered my many questions willingly. He did not yammer on however. Something we greatly appreciated since the natural beauty was spectacular. It was nice to be able to soak it up without constant interruptions. We recommend without reservation.

Can you take more than 6 people? We are a group of 8 - 5 adults, 1 teen, an 11 yo & a 4 yo. We are thinking of coming in November and would love a tour but would like to be together.
Thank you,
Sandy
