- 1Your guide would take you to see the beautiful iconic buttes, spires and mesas that have made Monument Valley famous on part of the 17 mile loop drive. We would then go to the back country restricted areas of the Tribal Park to stand beneath the natural arches, amp theaters and get right up close to the Anasazi petroglyphs. Our guides are so kind and would explain the traditional meanings of each location, history, and culture while answering any question that you might think of. Navajo Spirit Tours does not shy away from some of the spiritual topics that you might not hear about on a regular day. We do try our best in the short amount of time that we have with each of our guests to teach as much as we can while you are here. We do look forward to meeting you!
About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Lesley J0 contributionsA magical and spiritual experience with Will CowboyThe sunrise tour with Will Cowboy at 6:30 on roads only a Navajo guide are permitted to use is a never to be forgotten experience. We were the only couple and he generously gave us 3 hours, sharing the beauty of the land, geology and a fascinating insight into his culture. Our eyes will never un-see the serenity and beauty of Mother Earth and Father Sky at sunrise. It was a moving and chilling moment when Will sung a Navajo travel song in the natural dome of Big Hogan. We even learnt some iPhone camera tricks! Thanks to Will - truly appreciated.Written October 6, 2024

- Jetster180 contributionsStunning viewsTook a tour which was led by Will cowboy. Nothing was too much trouble and was very passionate about his culture going in to great detail and the tour was never rushed . Hardly saw another tour on this route and virtually had the place to yourself . Only another six people on our tour so was not cramped and Will ensured you got to see the best views and had time to take photos and ask questions. Amazing your made more special by Wills guidance and experience .Written September 28, 2024
- DaisyPugh0 contributionsGarry Holiday is a great tour guideThe tour with Garry was magical. He gave us space when we just wanted to look around and shared his knowledge when we asked. Best parts were when he talked about growing up in Monument Valley. I would highly recommend him and this company. It was perfectWritten September 26, 2024
- Subteach100 contributionsBest experience of whole tripI wish I could give this more than five stars. We did the all day tour which is a two part tour. Our guide Will was full of information and history of the people and area. You get to go into some of the remote parts of the valley if you take the all day tour. By doing this you get to experience the valley at times with no other visitors than those on the tour with you. You have plenty of opportunities to get out of the open air transportation and walk around. The views are amazing. The tours were well worth the price and I would do it again.Written September 16, 2024

- karenwL5067CA0 contributionsA must do!!!We took the all day tour which included Monument and Mystery Valleys. Our guide, Shawn, was very knowledgeable about the area and told us many stories about his people. We were able to view many breathtaking creations that we would have been unable to see if we had only driven the scenic drive. The highlight of the tour was our stop at Big Hogan. Shawn and two other tour guides entertained us with traditional music....the flute, the drum, and a song. This tour is definitely the way to go!!!Written July 3, 2024
- EileenR1010 contributionsWalking with the Ancient Ones.We met a man last week. He was a very quiet young man. A very proud young man, He told us stories and when he bent down to draw signs on the freshly cleared earthen canvas, we were drawn into his stories and listened of his family’s history. Hundreds of years of history. He told us how they lived, how they farmed, how they built their homes and took us to several locations where we could stand amongst the ruins. He took us to panel after panel of ancient pictographs and explained some of the meanings. It was fascinating. He told us that he was born and raised in Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, his family’s ancestral lands. How as a young man he was drawn to the wilderness to explore his world and learn of the old ones and their ways. His name is Sean, and he was our guide for a Mystic valley tour under beautiful, clear Utah skies. and later a sunset tour of Monument valley. He taught himself how to play a three-segment flute and compose his own beautiful songs, some of which he played for us. Sean had a wealth of knowledge about his People. He is a very proud Navajo and is learning all he can in order that he can pass it along to the younger generations. Sean and his people have left an impression on my soul. I will never picture Monument Valley as I have in the past. I see the beauty of the monoliths in the fading light but now I feel breath of the people who call it home. Thank you Sean and your Family for teaching me.Written July 1, 2024
- ilovemanhattanNyc0 contributionsOne of the best tour experiences. Ever!Fantastic! We had a 3-hour private tour of Mystery Canyon with Larson Homer, who was one of the best tour guides I have ever had anywhere. He encouraged our questions and discussion, answering everything honestly, and teaching us about the Navajo culture. He spent time going into depth on what we saw & the significance of all we saw, the history of where we were, how the people who dwelled there lived, what the ruins, rocks and bits of pottery and bricks meant, and how they were treated by the US Government. He was knowledgeable, witty, patient, informative and a joy to listen to as he told us personal stories. He played the flute for us and answered our questions about the instrument and Navajo tradition of music. He also explained the plants & trees & flower we saw, explaining how each was used for medicines, etc.Written June 27, 2024
- belting690 contributionsWhat a great experience!First and foremost; Larson is the best guide we have ever had. And we’ve been on many tours around the world. The sites are all excellent. I think my favorite was the house of many hands (not positive of name). But many more locations stand out. Second favorite was the window. We learned so much of the geology, history and lore of the area. But to top it off, Larson played his native flute for us. It was amazing!Written June 20, 2024
- ErinB31060 contributionsAmazing and Magical - Highly Recommend!!We did the Monument and Mystery Valley tours with Will Cowboy. This was an amazing, special day. In addition to the stunning scenery, we learned so much about the land's history, the Navajo who lived there, and information about Navajo culture and family. The area itself is stunning and fascinating. Will was terrific, we could not have asked for a better experience.Written June 18, 2024
- minjim0 contributionsOutstanding TourMy husband and I took this tour so we could see parts of Monument Valley that you can’t normally see on your own. Will was our tour guide and he was absolutely awesome. Sharing stories about his family and heritage. This was our 3rd Native American tour and the best one of all. We never knew there were so many movies filmed in Monument Valley and not all of them were westerns. I would do this tour again in a heartbeat. Thank you Will for sharing your stories, memories and your heritage with us!Written June 15, 2024
- GlobeTrotting7397270 contributionsMonument Valley sunset tourIt was so hot and windy, I was apprehensive about taking this tour that evening in an open tour vehicle, but the beauty of the scenery, our guide Sariah's fascinating commentary and interpretation of the geological, cultural, and historical aspects of the valley, as well as her personal insights, made me completely forget about the weather. This was a very special evening. In addition, the personal attention and care from the office while I was deliberating on which tour to book, as well as providing a guide to understanding and appreciating some of the cultural differences, was exemplary customer service.Written June 13, 2024
- ShelzWilliams0 contributionsAn experience not to be missed! Sean is fantastic. We did the Mystery Valley & the Sunset Monument valley tours, both with Sean as our fantastic guide. It was fabulous to get away from the crowds and see areas so steeped in history. We loved hearing about the Navajo culture and Sean has a great skill in storytelling that kept us fully engaged learning about the Navajo history, their life in the area and customs. Sean played the flute so beautifully and that was a really special and moving experience. Definitely an experience not to be missed - thank you Sean for allowing us to visit your beautiful lands and sharing with us.Written May 25, 2024

You can drive yourself around the 17 mile loop through Monument Canyon if you have an SUV.
BUT you will miss SO much!
By taking this tour, you will get to see much more. There are beautiful arches, petrographs, and fantastic areas that only a Navajo guide can take you to.
Our guide (Larry) also sang for us, and helped up make superb artistic photos by holding our cameras near water puddles to reflect the monuments in the water. Love you Larry!
Take the tour. You won't regret it.

I camped for two weeks throughout the Colorado plateau region with my husband and two children (7-11)
and this was the only guided tour we paid for. We chose it because the reviews were astonishing and I wanted the children to know more about the dineh/Navajo people. And it stood up to expectations.
With Larsen we could reach areas of Monument Valley that are not accessible without a guide and in each place he told us about his childhood growing up in the Navajo culture, the beliefs, the legends, way of life, houses, school, and he also played the traditional flute for us!
We also chatted about nowadays challenges the Navajo confront every day.
I would also like to add that my husband and I are tourist guides in Italy, so we know a bit about guiding.

Doing the Sedona/Grand Canyon/Antelope Canyon circuit, our family of five drove out to Monument Valley wondering if it was going to be worth the time/distance to get there. Joined the Navajo Spirt Tour and we all agree it was the highlight of our vacation. We had planned just to drive thru on our own, take the photo ops and check it off the list, but from the moment our guide drove us off the beaten path, we saw sights that we would have never seen, and heard fascinating stories about the Native Americans who once roamed these lands. Teenagers are not easily impressed but my three came away with a new respect for a culture in their own country they knew little about. Our guide was Larsen who was knowledgeable, funny, and patiently answered our questions. Via his words, I think he helped our kids better understand that while in their eyes their Dad will never be cool, it's ok to have respect for your elders. As Larsen would say, "it was crazy." We highly recommend Navajo Spirit Tours.

Two very enthusiastic thumbs up for Navajo Spirit Tours! Our Navajo Indian guide, Don, was nothing less than excellent. From the history of Indian tribes in the valley, to how the valley was formed to Navajo culture and traditions to photography tips-Don presented it all to us with kindness and enthusiasm. There were only 3 of us on the tour (2 adults and a tween). We all found his efforts to preserve the Navajo culture and language with younger generations amazing. We saw some bigger tours and were very happy we choose a smaller tour and enjoyed the specialized attention we received. We also appreciated riding around in a suburban as apposed to a larger bus or on the back of a truck. We were all sad when our tour came to an end. If you want an authentic experience with an intimate feel you must do a Navajo Spirit Tour!

I wanted to write this review before I’ve left Monument Valley because I want to remember the feeling I have now, and try to write it down! We toured Monument Valley with Navajo Spirit Tours 13 years ago with my older parents and young son and as soon as we left, I wanted to immediately come back. It made such a huge impression on all of us - and that was down to this company. It took us 13 years to come back, but we are here again in 2023 and yet again, it is really hard to put into words how brilliant this company is.
I have been to Monument Valley 4 times in total and I can not recommend a tour with Navajo Spirit Tours strongly enough. Before touring with them, I had used other companies so I do have a benchmark for comparison. To put it very simply, if you are looking for a personal, meaningful and incredibly special experience, then please don’t go with any other company. These people are your people.
From the time of booking, Miesha made the process super easy and went above and beyond to answer all my questions and makes our experience exactly what we’d hoped for. We were privileged to, again, have Garry as our guide and his knowledge and way of bringing the Valley alive is magical. My children (14 and 11) loved him and we were all completely at ease in his company. We could have stayed and listened to his stories for hours and hours. We also visited Mystery Valley which is fantastic but I have reviewed that separately.
In short, if you are looking for an authentic and personal experience that this beautiful place deserves, then please do yourself a favour and take a tour with this company. At no point we’re we rushed and at no point did we feel that we were part of a run of the mill commercial tour. This is a family run business and it shows and makes a massive difference to the whole experience.
Thank you to Garry and Miesha, such an honour to have encountered such wonderful people. We hope to see you again - my kids weren’t joking when they told Garry they will be bringing their kids back for a tour. We will be back as soon as we can!

We just completed a sunrise tour and I would rate them 6 of 5 stars if possible. Our guide, Larry, was very knowledgeable and shared info on the Navajo culture and history. We were very lucky as Larry shared a traditional song about a white buffalo which was beautiful, especially in the setting of an amazing arch. Larry was also very helpful in getting those perfect pics. If you visit Monument Valley Tribal Park, make sure you book a tour with Navajo Spirit Tours. It's important to note that nearly all the tour is in the back country that you can't access without a guide, so even if you drive the valley tour road, you'll only see the sights we did by taking the tour.

I cannot say enough good things about our tour through Monument Valley with Navajo Spirit tours. First, I would 100% recommend visiting in the winter. I have been in the summer and it is a completely different experience. The landscape was beautifully covered in snow and the crowds are so much smaller, it feels like you are nearly alone at times.
Our tour guide was Will Cowboy. With so few people in the winter, my husband and I basically had a private tour. Will was an amazing guide. By the end of our tour, I felt like I had learned so much about Navajo history and culture. He told us about the Navajo religious stories related to the valley, his family's history (living there for more than 15 generations!), and much more. He always pointed out where to get the best pictures and took pictures of us at different sites. Kind, funny, knowledgable and easy to talk to. Cannot recommend highly enough!

My wife and I spent a day in Monument Valley. We did a tour of this indescribable place with Navajo Spirit Tours. What a fantastic experience! Our guide, Will Cowboy, who grew up in the Valley and knows it like the back of his hand was a exceptional tour guide. He taught us so much about the valley, showed us its beauty and shared about his culture and his own experience. What an insightful moment! Can't wait to be back and tour again with Navajo Spirit Tours!

We booked the Monument Valley morning tour and the Mystery Valley private tour in the afternoon. I highly recommend both. Our guide, Sean, was superb.
The morning tour involves multiple stops with ample time to experience the incredible geology of the Valley, interwoven with the history and culture of those who lived and live there. When we stopped at the Big Hogan Sean played the flute which was very beautiful.
The afternoon tour to Mystery Valley was fantastic - it was raining to begin with, which allowed water to cascade down the rocks, changing the colours and forming waterfalls. The sun quickly came out and we visited ruins of the dwellings of the Anasazi people, Sean spotting fragments of pottery and arrowheads as we went around. We had the benefit of more beautiful music in the afternoon.
I would highly recommend this company - I had excellent communication prior to travelling from Miesha, and the quality of the tour and the information was first rate. I’ve done a lot of guided tours in my time and Sean is by far the very best guide we have ever met. Thank you Navajo Spirit Tours for a very special day.

There are experiences that surprise you, those that surpass expectations, and those that resonate with you long after. On our third visit to Monument Valley my wife and I thought we had a pretty good idea of what this majestic, beguiling beautiful and harsh environment had to offer. We didn’t want to miss a moment of changing light gazing avidly from every conceivable angle. We hiked the limited trails and drove the gorgeous loop drive as we always had. This time we wanted to go deeper. We decided to do a guided tour. Because we were familiar with the loop and wanted to venture into deeper recesses away from crowds we choose a private tour with an independent guide. We chose Navajo Spirit Tours. It was clear from the start that our host, Gary was not the usual scripted tour guide. He grew up here and lives here. After a period of city life and other ventures, including lecturing on Navajo life at the university level, he brought his wife and family back to the valley and opened Navajo Spirit Tours. Gary has a talent for connecting with people on a deeply human level. On his tours you’ll share experiences far beyond the typical sightseeing. He is a native speaker and a soft spoken orator. He is equally well versed in culture, history, mythology, geology, movie history and will happily contour tours to the specific interest of his guests. I won’t share the specifics of our afternoon. Everyone will have their own unique experiences. But I will say the back country tour was electrifying. I knew it as it was happening and feel the same days after. My wife and I own an historic house. Do do group tours. I am always fascinated to see how other guides engage their audiences. Gary did so by first making us comfortable, then gently coaxing out of us what we hoped to gain from our visit. If you prefer a “Disney-like” experience (nothing against the mouse) you’ll be happy to climb into a covered trailer with a clutch of fellow tourists and listen to dictation over a loudspeaker. There are a great many options for you. If you truly want to delve into the place, the Navajo and Anasazi cultures and the spiritual dimensions of Monument Valley I can’t imagine a better way to find that than Navajo Spirit Tours.

Do I need to purchase a park entry pass prior to the tour?
Are Navajo Nation Members required to buy a pass?
The park is under a first come first serve basis, does the "first come first serve" still apply with booking this tour?
Thanks.
Written March 21, 2023
You do need to purchase a park pass. That’s not included in the cost of the tour. But you can purchase the park pass that day. We just paid for it by credit card as the tour vehicle entered the park. I don’t think you need to worry about the “first come, first served” since you are booking the tour and you do that in advance. I am not sure about the other part of your question.

Trip advisor says these tours are available, but the Navajo website says Monument Valley is closed. Are the tours available now?

We rode in a suburban, she can stay inside the vehicle, and the driver will take her right up to the monuments for closer views.
