What to expect
  • During your visit to the Houston Museum of Natural Science, head to the Cockrell Butterfly Center and show your entrance ticket to enter the exhibit. Walk through a three-story glass structure that simulates a tropical rain forest, complete with a 50-foot waterfall. The glass-enclosed rain forest is home to exotic flowering plants and thousands of live butterflies that flutter around the exhibit. Continue to the Brown Hall of Entomology to view live insects, mounted specimens, and larger-than-life insect models. In the displays, search for camouflaged creatures, watch leaf cutter ants at work, learn how insects can help solve crimes, see giant wasp nests, and check out some of Houston’s largest cockroaches.  Peek into an entomologist’s lab for a close look at insect specimens and listen to interviews with working entomologists. Learn about butterfly-friendly gardens, backyard beekeeping, and ways to control mosquitoes. In the Chrysalis Corner, have the chance to see butterflies emerge from their chrysalis and dry their wings, then get released into the rain forest. Kids enjoy the The Land of Beeyond on the main level, where they can play in a giant beehive, make insect rubbings, read insect picture books, and put together puzzles.

Beautiful
Amazing and beautiful. Education section prior to butterfly entrance was definitely geared toward young children but we still enjoyed it.

Allow tickets to be printed prior to the event or scannable on your phone. With hundreds of folks waiting to buy tickets we were unable to bypass the line. The museum seemed very understaffed, if we return it will be mon.-wed. We decided to receive a refund, so we did not get to experience the butterfly center.

The butterflies were absolutely gorgeous in the rainforest! The guide was very informative very accommodating to my 91 y/o mom. Great place to just sit and watch. The museum itself was full of information about all things creepy crawlly. :)

Awesome museum and incredible butterfly house!
Dec 2019
We had an afternoon free while we were visiting Houston and we decided to visit the Natural Science Museum. We really enjoyed it. All of the exhibits were enjoyable, but my husband especially enjoyed the seashell exhibit and the Egyptian area with the mummies. My favorite was the Cockrell Butterfly House - make sure you add that to your admission. We saved it for last and I wish we had gone in earlier so that we could've spent longer! It was so relaxing - the butterflies were beautiful and the waterfall was calming. They had Christmas music playing, too. Incredibly amazing spot to take photos. We would definitely visit again!

Such a wonder to walk amongst the butterfies, watching them flutter about. Spent a good 2 hours just intently watching them. Went before the holidays so they were playing Christmas music to watch them by. Expect it to be hot and humid and dress accordingly
