Hidden gem of a museum. The building used to be a children’s orphanage. It was restored after the flood. The building is magnificent. The collection is varied and extensive including 3 Warhols, the Stelzig’s store horse, and information about Texas through the years. We spent 2 hours. We will be back to see it again. Highly recommend.

This is a hidden gem of a museum. Most people go to Galveston for the beach. We found this place by using the Hilton App that has a link to a map that populates there entire area. We found it through that. This building was built in 1895 and was operated as an orphanage that withstood the terrible hurricane of 1900. It now has great historical objects. There’s a diorama of the Battle of San Jacinto. Outstanding. The sections are: a journey through the history of Texas, when the Spanish were here and the beautiful artifacts therein. One area plays the story of the terrible hurricane of 7 Sept 1900, devastating the city and losing 6,000 people.

The Bryan Museum was a great find for us! We easily enjoyed a couple hours there. They have quite a collection. There’s a Spanish Colonial Gallery, Texas Frontier Gallery, Statehood and Beyond Gallery and lots of other wonderful things to see. There are large collections of historical firearms, saddles, Spurs, clothing, artwork, etc. There’s a display about cowGIRLS and some other cowgirl items in other places. Displays are well done with informational labels and iPads with touch screens that explain various items. There is some beautiful artwork from various times and there are even three paintings by Andy Warhol. One of those is of Annie Oakley. Pretty cool! The tour starts with an 8 minute video introduction to the collections in the museum. Great place to go on a rainy day, in the heat of the day in summer or any time. We really enjoyed it.

We are relatively frequent visitors to Galveston, but this was our first visit to this museum. It was excellent containing memorabilia from the collection of Texas oilman, J.P. Bryan. Located in the historic Galveston Orphanage, the architecture of the building itself is impressive. I would consider this museum a "must see" for visitors to Galveston. It is in walking distance from the Hotel Galvez and has free parking at the museum.

Superb, yet disppointing are the words that describe my reaction to my visit.

As a deposit of Texas history, my reveiw echos most as it is indeed excellent in every aspect..

As a keeper of the history of the building and The Home for Orphans for many, many years, it fails miserably.. Not a word about what each room was used for, not a word about where the kitchen was, Nothing on how the children lived, worked or were eductaed. In short, aside from the plaque at the main entrance and something very brief in the basement, the museum has scrubed this aspect of the building clean.

By all means visit, it is well worth it from the Texas history aspect, just do not expect much on The Orphans.

I was not expecting such a wide and interesting array of memorabilia and information on Texas History here. Something for everyone. If in Galveston you gotta make this a priority. I figured in and out in 30 min. We were there over 3 hours and couldn't take in all the displays. We will go back again for things we missed.

For those interested in Western and Texas history, this place rocks. Read James Donovan’s The Blood of Heroes and then come here! Art, artifacts, history, and lore. For the kiddies, a pretty fantastic pirate “cave” offers entertainment. Definitely a great stop on the island.

Galveston may be a beach resort town but the history of Texas and the Gulf Coast area can be experienced at the Bryan Museum. The exhibits range from the early Indians through today. This museum was originally built in 1895 as an orphanage and walks you through each age of Texas history. Amazingly they also cater weddings and events onsite. Beautiful gardens surround the building and the inside is breathtaking. Highly recommended for anyone travelling to or living in Galveston.

Galveston was the most prosperous city in Texas. We still can see the legacy here. It was hard to find a free [arking in Galveston. When I visited here, there was free spots behind the museum. I was concerned about COVID19. But the museum was super clean. I was amazed at the restrooms. This building was built many years ago. But the restrooms were super clean!! I spent two hours without worrying about COVID19!!
