About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Joann B0 contributionsComfortable way to see marine life and our environmentOverall a beautiful day out on Port Phillip Bay. We did see dolphins, seals and various birds at Pope Marine Park. Boat arrived late, as in 30 minutes, despite us getting numerous messages to be there at 11.45am.Written March 5, 2024
- 973pardeepk0 contributionsIt was really good and new experiencesThe view was amazing. We took so many pictures and my little one was really happy coz he said mum boat was really fast. We enjoyed a lot and we will visit again……Written January 27, 2024
- brenlouflan0 contributionsSightseeing? Ha Ha HaWe were told it was a sightseeing tour of the bay. Nearly $400 later, we sat in the boat near some seals and watched the others snorkeling. Totally boring trip and a financial rip off!Written December 17, 2023
- marcelsF9614IJ0 contributionsGreat experience!!This was a really cool trip with super nice employees that are willing to answer questions. Sadly I couldn't swim with Dolphins because they were too shy that day but we still saw a few. They also have really good new looking wet suits they keep you really warm.Written December 4, 2023
- nicosfriend0 contributionsDolphins and SealsThis was one of the most amazing experiences I had so far! Even though our close up encounter with the dolphins was only like 5 seconds - we saw a lot of them from afar, but they seemed to be hunting for fish and not interested in us. However, we went to a little island with seals and they swam with us and got super close! There was even a baby seal. The water was pretty chilly (~13°C in October) - the wetsuits keep you warm underwater but we were freezing afterwards. Totally worth it though!Written November 7, 2023
- 210belindac0 contributionsLoads of dolphins and sealsMy daughter and I sail regularly on wildlife tours, and as Peninsula locals, we both love Moonraker. We’ve been on a variety of boats, and this vessel is big, clean, and provides awesome visibility. The crew were all equally friendly, and excited to show us the local marine life. We loved our tour, and would highly recommend.Written April 23, 2023

- Michelle A0 contributionsRelaxing, magical and fun!!Polperro were amazing, the team so knowledgeable and friendly. We were put onto their boat last minute, which saved the day. My partner swam and loved it, said the experience with the seals was incredible. I sat safely on the boat and enjoyed every minute. So many up close on the boat of both seals and dolphins. Was the perfect amount of time, lovely hot drinks and scones. We will be back as bring out boys for this years birthday presents.Written March 12, 2023

- shadowgurl33500 contributionsAmazing experienceI was able to swim with dolphins, seals and a weedy sea dragon, so the crew (and the animals) absolutely delivered! I could see that the crew had to balance a number of variables; tracking down dolphins and seals, respecting distance and safety of the animals, and of course making sure swimmers were OK. The staff were very knowledgeable about the creatures, and told us many facts about their behaviour which added to the day. I think it is important to remember, as we are told, that these are wild animals, and they will move around the bay and not always 'perform'. Having said that, I feel grateful that I was able to go out on this cruise and have an unforgettable experience. Dolphins swam right beneath us at one stage, and we swam very close to seals in another location.Written February 10, 2023
- Franko50 contributionsA GREAT DAYThe captain was very. knowledgeable and followed the dolphins giving a very rewarding experience. it was fantastic watching the ship divers bring the dolphins in.Written January 29, 2023
- amcdonald7840 contributionsKids loved it. 10/10 everytimeSecond time and it was still amazing. I surprised my partner and her/our children and it was as good as the first time. I have done the activity before so wanted to share it with my family for a summer holiday day out. It was just as good if not better! The staff were so incredibly helpful and made sure the kids got to see the animals plus gave them lots of snorkeling lessons. I cant say enough about how good this tour was, food, drinks and friendly staff it was money well spent. See you in a few years!Written January 16, 2023
- 174elhamk0 contributionsNot happy and no recommendedFirst of all i’ll give tripadvisor a one star and never going to book my plans with them, on a day we had booking it was no 3 hours cruise just 90 minutes and the time tripadvisor confirmed was 1:00pm, I took my 2 and 3 years old on a sun from 12:30 but after half an hour waiting and seeing no cruise I rang the company and they told me you don't have any booking with us at all, finally after long conversation over the phone they found out tripadvisor just sold us the ticket without any booking with the moonraker company. Any way after 1 hour waiting they fit us on a 90 minutes cruise and we haven't seen any dolphins by our ends. The only thing I can say is they have a friendly and nice crews otherwise It was our second time with this company and haven't seen any dolphins never go back and not recommend at all specially booking with tripadvisor.Written January 16, 2023

Nice boat trip with a very good crew. Trip was Informative. Sadly no dolphins, which was the main reason for booking the trip. I thought you'd be fairly certain you would see a few dolphins, so we were a little disappointed, having driven 90 mins to get there. The boat was clean, toilets were on board, and we were given a couple of biscuits too. Trip was good. We saw the seals and some birds. We understand these are wild animals so it's up to them whether they decide to show up...

Hi JanRob53,
Thank you for reviewing your recent cruise with us. Sadly we do miss the dolphins from time to time, however that shows they are still completely wild and don’t conform to our visits.
Thank you for cruising with us and we hope to welcome you onboard again to utilise your dolphin return.
Many thanks
Anna

Up to you if you prefer to do the seal- and dolphin watching tour on a large ship with many tourists or on a zodiac with 6 people (slighthly more expensive of course). The zodiac is faster and the tourists are quicker in the water but basically both ships offer the same tour.

A brilliant day! The staff were great and very professional. We did see dolphins but snorkelling with the seals was the highlight - they were lots of fun. It was a really hot day and the staff provided sunscreen as well as cool fruit and snacks. We did swim with dolphins but as they are wild it was a bit hit and miss who got a good view as they came underneath and around. But the staff made every attempt to ensure that all got a decent chance. Definitely worth it.

We initially did this trip in December but did not see dolphins, so returned in March to try again. The crew are all very kind and helpful and made sure everyone was safe.
I had read all the glowing reviews and perhaps my expectations were unrealistic so decided to write this review. Their website states that only 10 swimmers can be in the water near the dolphins at a time but I did not realise its implications. We had over 20 swimmers on the boat so had to divide into 3 separate groups and were hustled and in and out of the water after less than 5 minutes. Even with all the crews efforts to find the dolphins and get each group in and out 2 or 3 times in different places to be able to see them, in the end some people saw dolphins while swimming, some did not.
Although I enjoyed the trip, watching the dolphins from the boat and swimming with the seals, I don't consider the effort and cost worth it to possibly be in the water for a few minutes of the 3 hour trip to see a dolphin swim past you in a flash.
Afternoon tea consisted of some broken chocolate chip biscuits, a plate of mini muffins and a plate of fruit, none of which I got because there was just not enough for everyone.

TLDR : Go to Kaikoura in New Zealand - way better
I was surprised to see to see dolphin tours in the busy Melbourne bay. The tour operator gave a high chance of success and apart from dolphins we would also see seals and sea horses - great. In case the dolphins were not there on that day the Moonraker team stated on their website that we could just try again for free.
A few friends of mine had already gone on a first trip, but no luck and they did not see any dolphins. When they tried a second time (for free) I decided to join in.
Again we went without really seeing any dolphins. The captain tried hard and at one point there was the fin of a single dolphin in the distance, but quickly disappeared. Maybe that was because there was several other boats trying to claim the best spot and just chasing away the animals.
Swimming with seals was the best part. We also stopped at a port with a lot of anglers to see sea horse. I did not see any and neither did anyone else in the group.
All this would not have been a huge deal. Sometimes you are just not that lucky. But when I asked how to book the next trip for free (as I had not been swimming with dolphins as advertised) Moonraker just told me that I had seen the dolphin and that was apparently it. No second trip, no swimming with dolphins. No refund or discount either.

What am amazing experience. The stuff were super friendly and enthusiastic and were also very patient with a friend who was not a confident swimmer (they provided flotation devices on request and the instructor hovered near our friend). We saw three different sets of dolphins on our swim and also got to swim with Seals. The dolphins didn’t interact with us as much as I wished but of course these are wild animals and we did get incredibly close to them. We ended it with a swim on the reef which was a super relaxing way to end the day. Defiantly something I would recommend.

Trip was ok. More about other things than actual seeing dolphins. Even though we had a thick wetsuit it was freezing especially after getting back to the boat and waiting another 20min to get to the next spot.

I chose the sightseeing tour with my parents, we saw the groups of dolphins swimming just behind the boat! Took tons of photos of them. Lots of fun! The staffs are friendly and the food is delightful. Definitely will recommend to my friends and come back for swimming tour.

I took two disabled people on this trip and we could not have had a better time. The crew and particularly Jules were amazing. As a carer you know everyone has different needs, and the crew listened to me and helped only how and when appropriate. Nothing was too much trouble. Often crew on these adventures are condescending, but Jules the lady that worked on the boat was having such a great time and her sun shone on us all. Gus, you are awesome too :) Thanks Moonraker.
