About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- juliechitsos0 contributionsSo glad we decided to do this! This was an amazing day! Our guide, Jennifer, was fantastic. For context, deciding to fly to South Dakota and do this tour took quite some consideration. As Australians, our exchange rate makes everything we do over here so expensive as we only get around $0.64USD for every $1.00AUD. So firstly it was very costly to fly in to Rapid City - $500AUD per person. Tours also convert to over $500AUD per person. So that's $2000AUD before any accommodation or meals - but this is something we have always wanted to do so we spent the money, hoping it would be worth it and we wouldn't regret our decision. Well, we were not disappointed! It was was everything we were hoping for. Jennifer was so friendly and knowledgeable, offering to shorten or lengthen any parts of the tour we wanted to while also taking photos of us and taking the time to point out lots of extra interesting pieces of information. If you've been wondering if this tour is worth doing, it absolutely is. It was a full day - 8:30am pick-up and 5:00pm drop-off and we saw so much. The complimentary bottled water and snacks were appreciated as we opted to not waste our time buying lunch. We wanted to use every minute to explore, photograph and appreciate the grandeur of the sites and stops. Thank you again Jennifer for a wonderful day!Written October 21, 2024
- F5483ZPbeths0 contributionsSee the landmarks with Jennifer...Jennifer was our private tour guide and she was the best! We saw everything we wanted to see...Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Sylvan Lake and Custer State Park. She was knowledgeable about all of the places we visited and so personable. If we go back, I will definitely request her again.Written October 16, 2024
- SirHoot0 contributionsFantastic tour led by a fantatic guide....Overall, Black Hills Tour Company proves to be the best based on my experience. Without Melissa helping me out on the internet side, I would have never gotten this tour started. What can I say? Fantastic tour led by a fantastic guide!! Joel proves himself to be a total expert on the Black Hils.....in all aspects. His attention to detail, consideration toward me and my friend and the easy way he guides us through the maze that is Black Hills proves to be wonderful. When you got a great guide, it makes the tour that much easier and more enjoyable. It also helped that we had a great pleasant day to see the Black Hills. Everything helps!!! Oh yeah, when you guys read this, please tell Joel that on the day of our tour, October 4th, was also the day back in 1927, when the work on Mount Rushmore began!! Trivial?? Yeah, but that show you how completely great Joel was that day when I had to nickpik a trivia!!! Thanks for sending him to us on that day!!!Written October 10, 2024

We had a snafu with a bike lock that they quickly rectified and even gave us a gift card to a great restaurant in Rapid City for our trouble.Written October 3, 2024
- Michael B0 contributionsSouthern Black Hills Monument Tour Is AmazingThe tour was amazing. The guide, Aura, was very knowledgeable and fully covered the tour. It was a private tour for me and my wife. Never felt rushed. It was an excellent experience and we would highly recommend the tour. Our top experience in the Black HillsWritten October 2, 2024
- Mobile7869630 contributionsGreat 1/2 day tourThe 4 of us adults thoroughly enjoyed our tour with Jennifer! We especially appreciated being able to take in the views of Needles Highway and Iron Mountain while she did the driving and took some great photos of the 4 of us. It was expensive at $870 for the 4 of us including tax. No discounts for US Veterans was a disappointment. We loved the tour but did find it pricey. We did not check other tour companies but suggest comparing prices. We had perfect weather and found Jennifer to be knowledgeable, kind and informative.Written September 24, 2024
- malloryw8530 contributionsDon't miss seeing the Badlands with Joel.To all who are contemplating how to visit the Badlands… look no further. We enthusiastically recommend the Black Hills Tour Company. Our guide, Joel Albright, met us at our hotel exactly on time and our full day adventure began. He did all the driving and shared his knowledge along the way. Joel loves the Badlands and gave us a much greater understanding and appreciation for what we were seeing. His teaching background certainly came through! We loved learning about how the badlands were formed. We happened to visit the park on an exceptionally windy day, but Joel made sure we were in safe from dangerous ledges at all times. He shared information about the local history, the geology, along with lots of fun stories to bring the Badlands alive. Joel was very kind about offering rest stops along the way; and at lunchtime Joel presented us with an exceptionally delicious picnic! What more could we (or you) ask for? We highly recommend spending a day in the Badlands with Joel Albright. You will thank us if you do.Written September 22, 2024
- U1761CGmelissam0 contributionsGood day at BadlandsMajestic views of unique and colorful rock formations from millions of years ago. It was very windy, rocky, dusty, serene, dry and warm. Well maintained roads, good road signs and plenty of trails. Beware of wildlife. - 265lannyv0 contributionsWhat A Great Experience! Our tour guide, Gena, was absolutely amazing. Her knowledge of the area was impressive and thoroughly entertaining. She went out of her way to make sure we were comfortable and saw all the sights we desired. Besides great historical perspective we loved the "Gena " stories about her growing up in South Dakota. It was 5 hours that we thoroughly enjoyed. We worth the expense of a private tour.Written September 21, 2024

- Catiebug04190 contributionsExceeded our expectations! What an outstanding day! Cindy was a great guide with lots of information and stories that illuminated the history and understanding of the Black Hills area and Mount Rushmore monument. An unexpected light rain didn’t stop the experience pivoting to some creative ways to see highlights and areas of the Custer State park without having to leave the vehicle too much. Low behold, the sun came just in time to witness the awesomeness of the wildlife loop with sitings of pronghorns, a few prairie dogs, a large herd of big horn sheep hidden in the hills, and many many small herds of bison before we found a huge herd of Mommas and baby bison. The day exceeded our expectations! I’d highly recommend!!!Written September 5, 2024
- 609JerryH0 contributionsYou Can’t Go Wrong With BLACK HILLS TOUR COMPANYWe did 5 days touring from 5 - 8 hours each day. Steve was our guide. He took us to all the spots of note, providing great background information and allowing us to spend the amount of time at each location that suited us. We were never rushed. We learned so much about the geology, the, flora, fauna, and local culture. We enjoyed ourselves thoroughly and by having Steve as our guide and driver were relaxed at the end of the day since we did not have to worry with a GPS, missing a turn or getting lost. We're glad we took 5 days because there was so much to see with surprises such as the missile command center and the nutrients research center. Thank you, Steve and BHTour Company. PS Setting up the tour was so easy. Great experience with Melinda who handled all of the arrangements and booking details.Written August 30, 2024

My husband and I spent a lovely day biking on the Mickelson Trail with Steve as our guide. Steve did a great job suggesting sections of the trail that we would enjoy and gave us several options to choose from after lunch. We stopped at a trailhead and enjoyed a picnic lunch which tasted great because we were hungry from all the riding! Steve provided insights about the area and other tidbits that helped us better understand this beautiful area.

I usually organize my own bike trips but the Black Hills Tour Company has cured me of that bad habit. They did everything, from reserving hotels to providing a great rental bicycle to transporting all my luggage from place to place. They sequenced the four days of riding the trail optimally. The first day they drove us all south to the Rochford trailhead, so we had a shorter uphill ride and then a glorious downhill into Deadwood. The second day they took us back to Rochford and we rode south for the next three days.
Our driver Robb was outstanding. He’s been a bike guy (racer, mechanic, bike shop owner) for decades, and talking to him as he moved us and our bags was worth the price of admission in itself.
About that pricing—the full cost of the trip was cheaper than it would have been if I’d simply booked the hotels myself, never mind bike rental and luggage transport.
I’ve done self-guided bike trips in five US states and three European countries. This was some of the most beautiful scenery I’ve seen from a bicycle, and one of the best values of any trip I’ve taken. Don’t hesitate to book this trip. Consider asking them to add a second day in Custer to ride the nearby Custer Wildlife Trail. Possible to do Hill City to Custer plus the wildlife in one day, but a very long day unless you’re a super-elite cyclist.
I plan to return, either with family or biking buddies or both.

Kevin and team did an excellent job ensuring that our bicycle trip was a memorable one! What sets them apart from most, is that they do a great job understanding your specific situation and working out a custom experience that fits for your group.
We had a family of 7 with a wide range of ages (6 year old and two who were 65). Kevin recommended a scenic 18 mile stretch that was predominately down hill, which ended up being fabulous and a perfect fit for our group.
There was a ton of attention to detail on his part, and we certainly appreciated his adaptability and flexibility. It started with some challenging weather. Kevin and I traded texts early that morning to talk about potential options. His knowledge of the area allowed us to spend an enjoyable couple of hours in Deadwood waiting for weather to blow over. He grabbed coffee for the adults and led us to a great museum that entertained the kids and adults; pretty impressive on short notice!
This was one of multiple examples throughout the day (understanding what we had already seen or not seen, chatting with the kids, stopping to look at cool features or wildlife, etc.) where it was clear he was working to understand the dynamic and interests of the group and modify accordingly. At one point when we were uncertain if the weather was going to cooperate, he did a nice job of even thinking through some more "outside the box" possible options to make our day a successful one.
Fortunately the weather cleared, and we had a great ride! He was super patient with the kids and adults as we took a long time to get started (adjusting all the bikes, helmets, figuring out what jackets or rain gear we wanted to wear or not, etc.). He brought a picnic lunch that hit the spot that we had just a little over half way through the ride.
He had helpful tips for several of the other activities we were planning on doing during our trip, took some great pictures of our group, and even made sure we got to finish an educational DVD during the van ride back that my older son was really enjoying. We appreciated this given that Kevin's day ended up being notably longer than he probably originally anticipated.
Last but not least, the bikes and equipment were solid quality, which is important!
I often look at Trip Advisor reviews, but this is the first time I have ever written one. If you are going to the Black Hills or surrounding area, I would highly encourage you to check in with this Team. They are "top of the line" and excel at what they do.

The best part of the experience was having Rob as our guide due to his patience, expertise, and his experience with the Mickelson Trail. While I was unable to ride a bike on the Mickelson Trail, my sons one of which is Autistic, were able to bike the 17.9 miles due to how Rob explained the trail, went a portion of the trail with them, and made sure they were safe along the way.
Since I was unable to ride, Rob as we passed the various stopping points on the trail, he would point out the landscape, the trail, and other points of interest. He made me feel as if I were a part of the bike trip with my sons. This made the day very special to me.
In addition to this, the lunch provided was good and made for a very enjoyable day. My sons are in their twenties and not teens but there was nothing else I could select.
Due to this experience, my sons are talking about another bike trip with Rob in June of 2024.

We had a fabulous time riding the Mickelson Trail. Black Hills Tour Company did a great job setting up the itinerary and arranging our lodging. Our luggage was always at the next place each afternoon when we pulled up. The lodging was always close to the trail. We enjoyed our driver, Rob, very much. The trail is such an amazing way to experience the Black Hills. Lots of blue skies, the smell of pines, and the wildlife you see mile after mile are incredible!

We did a self-guided tour. Melina handled most of the arrangements and she was very accommodating with our requests, changes and unusual timing (a week/days that they normally do not arrange tours). The whole trip was awesome and we enjoyed it tremendously. Robb handled all the driving and luggage transport. He was very knowledgeable about the history of the area and interesting to talk to making the trip special. The trail itself is beautiful and we had a wonderful time.

Earlier this year my wife and I were considering a bike trip on the Mickelson Trail in the Black Hills of South Dakota. We contacted the Black Hills Tour Company and right from the start our email communications gave us the feeling that we were dealing with a professional company and they were interested in helping us make our trip special. From our first communications, we were confident in their ability to help us plan and execute our bike trip and they delivered. Melina and Kevin, the owners of the Black Hills Tour Company, were flexible during the planning process and made appropriate suggestions to make the trip better. During our time on the trail the Black Hills Tour Company delivered everything they promised professionally and timely.
Although the Black Hills Tour Company rent very good bikes for trail riding, we brought our own tandem bike for our trip. The Black Hills Tour Company let us use their location to build our bikes, store our bike boxes, and disassemble our bikes at the end of the ride. Tools were available if needed and after our disassembly process Melina went out of her way to help us ship our bike home. We had a great trip and a lot of the reason was because of the professional ability of the Black Hills Tour Company.

A wonderful, delightful time.
I booked a tour on the Mickelson Trail from Dumont to Mystic. An e-bike was offered at a slight extra charge, which really came in hand considering my cantankerous hip.
My guide, Joel, kept an even pace, not pushing me. We stopped at every trail information sign and every waterfall. If you have not done the Mickelson, you will be surrounded by jaw dropping splendor. There are no words to describe the beauty.
Well worth it. A definite RECOMMEND.

My wife and I did a custom 5 day tour, which is to say, it was just us and the guide. We are both 75 years old and are experienced bikers, but, needless to say, we are on the downside of our touring career. Our guide, Randy, turned out to br not only very knowledgeable, but adaptable and understanding of our limitations. We were able to do the whole Mickelson Trail over 3 days, which was our major goal in visiting the Black Hills. On day 4 we tried to do the wildlife loop in Custer State Park, but the uphills proved to be too much for us. We put the bike in the van and finished touring that day in the van. We got to see all the major sites in the Black Hills while swapping stories with Randy. We considered biking the badlands on day 5, which Randy thought was within our capabilities, but the temperature was predicted to reach 105 degrees that day, so we demurred. Instead we did a cave tour and visited the mammoth site (air conditioned). All in all it was a wonderful week and I won’t highly recommend this company.

The 4 day self guided Mickelson Trail bike trip was excellent. Black Hills Tour Company made all the arrangements for shuttles, bike rental and lodging, all we had to do was get on our bikes each morning and ride. Our luggage was waiting for us each evening at our lodgings. Each nights lodgings were clean and comfortable.
We added the optional Mt. Rushmore guided tour on the 2nd afternoon. Our guide Kevin was knowledgable, entertaining and accomodating. While at Mt. Rushmore I lost my wallet, I didn't discover this until I returned to Hill City after the tour. When I contacted Kevin he searched the van and when he did not find it he offered to take me back to Mt. Rushmore to look for it. I opted not to do that, so he said he would have another guide inquire about it in the morning. I was very grateful for his efforts. Fortunately the wallet was found and returned to me the next day by one of the Park Rangers at Mt. Rushmore.
Jim our shuttle driver was also great. He was very knowledgable of the area and it's history.
I would reccomend Black Hills Tour Company for your adventure on the Mickelson Trail.
