About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Lu S0 contributionsEXCELLENT!!John was an amazing host/guide on our culinary tour! Much history about the food of course as well as the City-some serious and some humorous! I accidentally deleted the foodie photos, but I can tell you, it was all delicious from the pulled pork sliders, collard greens, and corn bread at Poogan's, to the lamb & beef sliders, & Asian chicken at 5 Church, to the fresh caught Shrimp on creamy cheesy grits, hushpuppies w/praline butter, and pimento cheese at The Oyster Bar, and dessert was a Praline candy from Kaminski's Dessert Cafe. Yum, yum, yum! All of the restaurants were set up and ready to serve us and they were very efficient in serving us cocktails and wine(all optional of course)and were quick with the tabs so we could be on to the next stop. We highly recommend this tour! Enjoy!!Written May 30, 2021

Step inside the Historic Governor's Inn where Mike, the host, brings together a unique history lesson taught over an authentic meal. Dont worry, there is no test. Step back in time, three separate ones in fact, to a dinner table where friends, new or old, gather. From the meals he prepares himself to the dinnerware Mike offers an experience not to be missed.

This is a fabulous experience for any history loving foodie. Mike Hebb, the host, cook, historian and waiter is a hard act to follow. He is fun, knowledgeable AND can cook up a reciept from the 18th century like nobody's business. The location is a history nerd's dream come true - the dining room of the Edward Rutledge house on Broad street. Rutledge, the youngest signer of the Declaration of Independence, also hosted George Washington to dinner - IN THIS DINING ROOM!

Communication before the event was great as due to filming on the street of the venue, our entry to the building was altered and we received emails.
Upon arrival we we greeted warmly by the host, Mike (in period dress) and given a short history of the building and its unique features. Thereafter, we had 30 minutes to enjoy the South Carolina Historical Society Museum.
Dinner included 7 courses from the 18th and 19th centuries and Mike provided very interesting, detailed history of Charleston area, it’s people and the food of the 18th and 19th centuries.
The food that we received was tasty and plentiful and we enjoyed the replica china and flatware that we used.
During the dining portions we had a chance to meet and interact with the other ten diners who were all from different places throughout the country which was enjoyable.
A unique, truly enjoyable experience that we would recommend to family and friends.

We enjoyed our 45th anniversary at this historic dining museum. Chef/Historian Mike brought to life the culture and history of Charleston. The food experience depicted the era of the culture thru different courses. The food was delicious and Chef/Historian Mike gave a vivid picture of each era with his auditory skills and the museum was perfect for an 18th century historic dining experience.

Outstanding evening combining an overview of Charleston history with dishes from various periods in the city’s past. The food was delicious and all the more appreciated for being a change from the usual restaurant fare. Being able to enjoy this and Mike’s talk on the city and the food in such a splendid period room at the Governor’s House Inn was a truly special event.

Mike the Host, Historian, Chef, Server and Busboy is unbelievable!
His instructions how to find the building are very clear, then if you come 20-40 minutes early you have a chance to peruse the museum which contains some interesting artifacts and is interactive.
But the dinner!!! Seven entrées, all attributed to the time and prominent families of Charleston. I won’t tell you what we ate because Mike is very creative and he is constantly researches and cooks something new.
Let me tell you, it was delicious. And accompanied by so much historical information that I will have to come to three more dinners to remember a third of the facts. Street names and historical markers began to mean more after his dinner.
We had 10 people at the table, none of them locals, the dinner talk gave us the opportunity to talk and share.
And dessert!! I am not a fan of sweet things, but Mike’s chocolate sponge was to die for.
Bottom line: worst every dollar and every second!

Our evening with Mike at the Historic Charleston Supper Club was amazing. Mike is so knowledgeable and shares an abundant about of information about Charleston history as well as culinary history. He is warm and invites questions and comments throughout the evening. The food that he prepares is delicious and plentiful. The soup and bread as well as the multiple entrees and desserts were presented in an appealing manner and the background provided on each dish was interesting. The dining room is a beautiful setting of china and serving dishes. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone. The visit to the museum prior to the dinner was an added touch.

This is a unique “tour from a table”! Mike educated & entertained us while serving very tasty dishes from three time periods of Charleston’s past. There was more than enough food for everyone & we were encouraged to take leftovers with us. I highly recommend the experience!

What a wonderful experience! I recommend this historic dinner party to everyone!
Mike is a great host, a very knowledgeable historian and a heck of a chef. The home is beautiful and the dinner was authentic down to the china pattern and flatware. I learned so much about Charleston history and how food changed with the time periods, and we really enjoyed the company of the other diners. Both my husband and I would definitely do this again. A Southern Living-worthy experience!

Where to start with this incredible experience?!
Starting with our own private opportunity to tour the museum, the amazing 7 course meal based around highly influencial people of our nation, to the history lesson of Charleston and how integral the area was to America becoming what it is today, Mike's passion for American and European history combined with his 30 years of culinary/ hospitality experience was extremely evident in not only the preparation and presentation of this fantastic meal, but in making sure he gave us a wonderful lesson in Charleston and American history.
You'll leave with a full belly, a new appreciation for Charleston, and a smile on your face!
Highly recommend booking this experience before the spots fill up. You won't be disappointed!!
