About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Jet742780 contributionsGood...The different tours at the site were very good. However, the Big House was not the house present during the slavery era, but rather one built in 1935. This detracted from the experience. The time of that tour could have been better spent exploring the slave cabins which were really very descriptive of that era....Written December 10, 2024
- bcbartholf0 contributionsDisappointing Halloween TripWent for the Halloween events and was disappointed :( had so much fun last year and this year not impressed. I swear they had 3 people working inside each house (last year like 20+ inside the house). The hay ride the same thing - half of the animatronics were out of order and for the ones that were running, there were 2-3 at each scene and didn’t really do anything. Overall was not scary and felt very understaffed.Written October 19, 2024
- samanthaSum19800 contributionsHighly recommend the VIP package. Well worth it!10/13/24 My husband and I went to Boone Hall Fright Night. There were 2 haunted houses and a haunted hay ride. The houses were absolutely amazing. They were super long too. Most haunted houses (in my opinion) only last maybe 3 to 5 minutes walking through. These... these were at least a 10 minute walk! Well worth the money! (Again, in my own opinion) The hay ride.. last year it was amazing. This year.. I didn't care for it at all. I honestly don't remember them narrating it last year. This year they did and for some reason, it took away from the overall experienceof the haunt. I throughly enjoyed the houses but not the hay ride. We purchased some souvenirs as well. Unfortunately, they do not sell anything with the dates on them. I'd love to see some maybe next year. That way people can look back & remember when they went. I highly recommend buying the VIP package. We literally never waited at all. Front of the line access. The only time we waited, was for the hay ride. And that was simply because we had to wait for the tractor. Overall... it was so much fun. And of course, loke every year, we will be back next year to do it all over again!Written October 15, 2024
- alanaP9537GG0 contributionsVisiting Boone HallVisited Boone Hall Plantation on August 19 in the afternoon. Was able to hear the history of the "cabins" built by slaves; attended the Gullah presentation (very good); toured the home (can only see three rooms in the house); and took a tractor ride agricultural tour which was also very interesting. All of the staff were friendly and helpful. If you go better to go in the morning hours to avoid the hot afternoons. There is a small cafe but menu is very limited. We just purchased water (two bottles was $5.45 with tax). We were glad we were able to see the Plantation.Written August 22, 2024
- DanaLulu980 contributionsGreat Experience! We recently visited Boone Hall Plantation and had a fantastic experience. The plantation is renowned for its stunning avenue of moss-covered oak trees, which creates a breathtaking entrance that captures the grandeur of the Old South. There are several tours and presentations to enjoy during your visit. I suggest arriving earlier in the day, as you can easily spend around three hours exploring. We particularly enjoyed the house tour, where we learned about the plantation's rich history. You can also take a guided tour along Slave Street, where the tragic stories of enslaved individuals are shared. Lastly, there’s a scenic ride around the plantation that is definitely worth taking. I highly recommend visiting Boone Hall Plantation.Written August 18, 2024
- L2686RGrobink0 contributionsSpend a morning at Boone Hall Plantation!Very interesting plantation tour with a lot of history. The tour schedule is well organized - review the talk/tour schedule when you arrive and it is easy to line up the timing so that you are able to see everything. Definitely do NOT miss the Gullah Culture live presentation - it was our favorite. The grounds are beautifully maintained and the staff is knowledgeable and helpful.Written May 15, 2024
- A8023SFlynnp0 contributionsExpensive tickets, pricey food and rides. We had 4 adults and 2 children. The children were looking forward to riding the hayride to the fields to pick strawberries. We got to the pickup spot at 4:35 and were told it was closed. So disappointing. We spent $90 to get in and extra for cold subpar food from venders. Very expensive rides and way too many fair type games. None of us will go back again.Written April 8, 2024
- N4073BZericad0 contributionsFun fun fun!Strawberry festival was amazing! Loved all the shows and contests they had, enjoyed watching the dog show and pie eating contest. Only con about the festival was how they charge $1-$3 to use my card to buy food and drinks, and even to play games.Written April 7, 2024

I really enjoyed the Gullah lady's singing and story-telling. Also, the tractor tour of the grounds was fun.Written February 28, 2024

- 693sarahr0 contributionsInteresting tours of a beautiful propertyVery good tour guides. Well coordinated schedule. Interesting history of the plantation owners but I would have preferred more information on the history of the enslaved people, also, the original main house was replaced in the early 20th century with the current house. Congratulations to the current owners for putting the property into a permanent conservation easement.Written December 11, 2023
- Betsy M0 contributionsEnriching experienceWonderful visit to this, still working, farm and plantation. The grounds are beautiful, particularly the oak lined drive that you travel to get to the main area. We did the stable, house and grounds tours. All guides were very engaging. Such rich history, and grateful that the private owner continues to open her property up for us all to enjoy and learn! We did the AAA tickets which were incredibly reasonable @25 each.Written December 6, 2023
- Bellissimo3450 contributionsPart of the history of the SouthLovely way to spend part of the day in South Carolina. The volunteer staff were engaged and so earnest about the story they had to tell. The history of the plantation is extremely interesting how it started how it grew how it’s been saved. I believe it’s the longest running agriculture, holding in the state of South Carolina. They still farm today. We were there right as the poinsettia were stacked up in a number of the rooms ready to be put on display. It will be a beautiful display. Nice to be able to visit and share part of the history of agriculture in the south of our country. The slave piece of the story is not unique to the Boone plantation unfortunately. They told history in a sensitive way and in modern day contrition. Would recommend the trip For anyone. The gardens are spectacular even this late in the year.Written November 29, 2023

Our Boone Hall Plantation visit was pleasant most of all. The one gentleman who welcomed us into the house was very nice and informative. Same as the other gentleman who assisted us in the covered courtyard, right before you faced the 'man-cave'. The two large rooms you see as you walk in, one on the right and the other on the left were both beautifully decorated. It is my understanding, that before the whole COVID issue, you could go in to the 'man-cave', now you can't. The truth is, for more than one reason, you can only visit the rooms I just mentioned. The rest of the house is off-limits. It is obviously a beautiful house, well made and designed with very good taste, but sadly, you can't see hardly any of it. The ride in to the property is majestic with its trees lining up the driveway. As we left the main house, we walked over to take advantage of the tractor pulled carriage ride around the property. We were one of the first ones to sit down on the first cart away from anyone, who might be bothered with us not wearing a mask. It turns out a family of four decided to get on the same one we were on. After the rest were loaded on, soon after the cart started moving, the lead tour guide asked us to put on our masks, after he was signaled by one of the ones belonging to the family, I just mentioned. We agreed to the request. [Mind you, the wind was blowing strongly at this time] Why was this request necessary? Don't let fear lead your life, and avoid trying to control others at the same time. Let's try to enjoy life. By the way, the lead guide was very informative and provided several facts about the history of the property.

We visited the planation with four children ranging in ages from 7-14. The older children enjoyed the visit more than the younger children, which makes sense considering the activity. The slave cabins are done quite well. I was especially moved by the astronomical number of ships that sailed with slaves and how many didn't survive the trip. The Gullah presentation was informative and entertaining if a little scattered. We enjoyed touring the first floor of the house. It's too bad the upstairs isn't available for viewing as well. The gardens are spectacular. We were not able to take the tractor ride, which was a disappointment. I bet this is great. It had been raining earlier in the day, and even though it wasn't currently raining when we hoped to take the tractor, it was no longer running for the day. I think adults would enjoy this along with kids 12+. The avenue of oaks is truly breathtaking. I also think Boone Hall does a fantastic job of balancing the history of the plantation while also honoring the slaves.

Visiting Boone Hall plantation was the last thing we did on our final day in Charleston, and it was a perfect ending to our stay in a most unique city. Bottom line, this plantation is a must-see. Allow plenty of time to get a real experience, and to come away with a true and lasting appreciation. We spent a little over 3 hours on the plantation, and chose to do a few things in that time only, which meant skipping the Gullah show (which is apparently a best-seller) and the trolley ride around the the plantation. Instead, we spent most of our time going through each of the powerful exhibits/displays inside the original slave dwellings. Each exhibit took you on a sobering journey of what life was like back then for the slaves and their families. Though it wasn't crowded the day we were there, everyone at the exhibits seemed to show much respect, including children. No one really talked. Voices turned to whispers when people stepped inside the slave dwellings and pushed the red button to hear the powerful recorded descriptions, which whisked you into the life and times of slaves on this plantation. We recommend going through all of them, as there are about eight. We also listened to two short history talks given by knowledgeable and enthusiastic Boone Hall plantation volunteers. And finally, we toured part of the plantation home itself, which, though not the original house of the 18th century, did not disappoint. The plantation home that is there now was built back in the mid-1930's, and is a replica of an antebellum home. It was very interesting to see pieces of furniture that are original to that era, and learning about the different owners of this property. There were plenty of peaceful places around the plantation we could take time to reflect, but our favorite spot was sitting on a bench underneath what looked to be a very ancient tree. We sat there looking down the gorgeous avenue of oak trees that were planted by the original 1700's owner. It was also a trip peeking inside a 1700's smokehouse on site, which apparently is the oldest building on the plantation and in the state. Amazing. Each talk, tour, and event is planned and timed daily, so once you've arrived and paid the very reasonable admission fee, you can decide what you want to do and when. I can't stress how grateful we are to have gone to Boone Hall plantation, and to learn what we did. There's an extraordinary amount of history here, and it will capture your heart in powerful ways if you let it.

The plantation was beautiful and a lot of fun with the history given and a great tractor ride. The guide at the plantation house was wonderful, talking to us about history at the home and other places. The Gullah presentation was terrible. After answering a question differently that she expected, I was berated for my incorrect answer in a condescending way. Throughout the presentation she referred back to me to make jokes about me and get a cheap laugh from the large crowd. It was early in our time there and really dampened our experience for the day. I was highly disappointed at this unprofessional manner after paying more for this activity than any other event in Charleston. Not worth the money to be demeaned.

I was very disappointed in the way the house tours were handled, I purchased an all access ticket online in advance, but there was not an opportunity to schedule a house tour for a specific time ( this would have been great for us because were were on a schedule). When we arrived around 11:00am we were given a house tour time of 2:00pm. I am sorry but it does not take 3hrs to tour the rest of the plantation and we had to be leaving 1:30pm for our next destination. We paid $90 for a family of 4 and didn't even get to tour one of the main attractions of the planation. It was very disappointing to say the least. If you are going to charge that much to get in to a place have it to where you can select a specific tour time that fits in the guests schedule. We visited another plantation and theirs was a self-guided tour (with audio on you own private phone) and cost $5 dollar less, we got to see everything there.

You are completely taken aback by the alley of oaks you can actually drive through in getting to the plantation once admission has been paid. Though the house is not original to the property, it is very recognizable as one of the film locations used in John Jakes; “North and South” miniseries.
While waiting for a tour of the house, we how to tour of the perimeter farmland and our guide was knowledgeable of the types of crops farmed on the property through the centuries… he was also quite funny!
While there, the Gin House was getting a complete restoration and will be interesting to see when coming back in the future. The house tour was amazing and our guide was friendly, knowledgeable and entertaining. The gardens are breathtaking with several plants blooming (it’s too bad small ground plaques aren’t used to identify the flora/fauna).
Before leaving, we toured one of the slave cabins which was quite interesting. You need to give yourself at least 3-4 hours to get the full benefit of all the activities offered.

This was our second plantation visit during our stay in Charleston having previously visited Magnolia Plantation and Gardens. I found this experience to be more in keeping with a true plantation while Magnolia Gardens was a more park like experience. Grounds here were immaculate and of course the Oak Covered drive into the plantation was amazing. The house tour was informative, the gardens were well maintained and beautiful. The Gullah presentation really set this tour apart. Veronica was an impassioned speaker and singer and her presentation was heartfelt. I can't give her a higher recommendation. The living quarters presentation was only so so. Video within each structure just didn't give the personal feel that the rest of the tour provided. We took the time to walk the back grounds near the swamp and had a god nature viewing experience though we did not see alligators which we were warned about. I was ok with that. We also stopped in at the little deli and gift shop and had a light lunch. Pricing was quite fair for a captured location. All in all, this tour met or exceeded all my expectations for a very reasonable price and I would highly recommend a visit.

It was an enjoyable time on property — I came more for fulfilling scenes filmed from the notebook - although the inside was not included in the film. The place only has 3
Rooms just to inform you as to not be surprised or disappointed. Just a suggestion for the hall — it’s hard to take a photo of the building itself without getting millions of people in it waiting in line to get in. Relocate the line off to the side so people can appreciate the beauty! (See attached photo)

The Hall of Oaks is the most well known sight at Boone Hall Plantation. It is stunning and a beautiful welcome to the property.
We toured the home and found the experience to be disappointing. One of the things that makes touring a home interesting is learning more about who lived there, why they built the home, etc. These details make the tour come to life. The docents didn't share much of this information and given that one can only see into a few rooms on the main floor of the home, it wasn't an engaging experience for us.
The live performance about Gullah culture was excellent! The storyteller is very gifted and we enjoyed her singing and storytelling very much.
We did not participate in the tractor ride around the property because it was about to rain. We toured the gardens and the cotton dock -- beautiful spots.
In all, we were at the Boone Hall Plantation for about 3 hours. I would recommend this venue.

Incredible! The docents at Boone Hall are well-informed and engaging. They know the facts and are eager to share with visitors. The gullah performance was unlike anything I've ever seen, and at points even interactive. DO NOT MISS IT! The hay ride gives you a good orientation of the land. If you're visiting with a bus company and not with your own ride, you'll have to move quickly to be able to do most of the guided tours if they interest you. The slave cabins were super informative, and if you read everything inside them you can easily pass away a good chunk of time doing those alone. Definitely a must-visit for anyone coming to Charleston for the first time.
