- 1Two of America’s Founding Fathers called Middleton Place home: Henry Middleton, a president of the First Continental Congress, and son Arthur Middleton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Now a National Historic Landmark, it is home to America’s oldest landscaped gardens; a House Museum filled with Middleton possessions; Plantation Stable Yards with heritage breeds; and Eliza’s House, a freedman’s dwelling that serves as the centerpiece of Middleton Place’s interpretation of the lives of the enslaved people who built the property. Sit back and relax on a luxury, air-conditioned motorcoach as you enjoy a short video provided by the Middleton Place Foundation on your way to the plantation. Upon arrival to Middleton Place, you will have the opportunity to explore all of the historic sites on this 65-acre plantation such as the House Museum, Gardens, Plantation Chapel, Parterre, Plantation Stable Yards, and Eliza's House. Enjoy a three-course Low Country Lunch at the Middleton Place Restaurant during your visit. Inspired by the recipes and spirit of former resident chef and renowned southern chef Edna Lewis, The Middleton Place Restaurant offers traditional Low Country favorites made from fresh, local, organic ingredients, harvested from the on-site organic farm and gardens. Our driver Wayne was the best!
He is a Charleston native and very knowledgeable! Middleton is definitely a must see and Pineapple Tours is the best way to do it! I recommend booking it through their Facebook page though , it will save you $$ 😉.
Make sure you dress comfortably..
There is a lot of walking, but there are benches where you can take periodic breaks.
Lunch was included with the tour and it was great, it gave us a chance to sit and cool off too!

This was a small group (16) bus tour. The driver provided some context on the drive out, followed by a movie. On site we were able to explore the grounds on our own. The house tour was basically self guided, but supported by local docents. The property is gorgeous, but note the main house was burned down at the end of the Civil War with the remains destroyed by an earthquake in the 1880’s. The house tour is of a flanker house where the family moved after the war. The house is small, but the many actual family artifacts makes it very interesting. We also saw Dayton Hall on the same trip and Middleton Place is far superior of the two.

Middleton Plantation was beautiful. The plantation tour is largely self-guided, which was nice in that it did not feel commercialized as some apparently are. The lunch that was included in our tour was forgettable, but in a lovely setting. As for Pineapple Tours our guide was the owner of Pineapple Tours, Benjamin. He was incredibly knowledgeable of the area and the local plantations having ived in Charleston all his life. We loved the tour so much that afterwards we got off the bus and immediately signed up for the City Bus Tour on the same day! Benjamin had us laughing (a lot!) and crying - there is so much history in Charleston. The tours were eye-opening.

Thank you Wayne for a great trip to Middleton Place. We appreciated your knowledge of the local area and of Middleton. Wayne is well-prepared - even umbrellas to borrow if it rains. House tour is rather small, but the artifacts and collection are beautiful. Lunch is average and Middleton needs to be a bit more efficient with service when guests are on a schedule. The grounds and property are well-maintained and fairly easy to get around (tho quite muddy if it rains...)

We departed from the Charleston Visitors Center with Pineapple Tour Guide and Driver, Wayne. He gave us so much great information about Charleston that we felt like we received a “bonus” city tour. The Middleton Planation was great and very well organized. The lunch was delicious and a true taste of Southern Comfort food. We had plenty of time to see the home and accompanying grounds. The gardens weren’t in bloom in October but the lush greenery was just as enjoyable. I would recommend this tour to others. Call before taking ambulatory or people with difficulties walking to make sure what’s accessible. The farm animals helped visualize life on a true plantation.

The tour bus group (Pineapple) was very good. Our guide was the owner and he was extremely helpful and the bus was spotless. Once we arrived at Middleton place the grounds of the plantation were beautiful, the museum was enjoyable and the lunch provided, while touted as amazing, was average. We were one of the first groups to have lunch and the crab soup was tepid at best so obviously not fresh made that morning, my shrimp and grits were very tasty and wife's fried chicken was definitely better than KFC. Dessert was an average pecan pie with the homemade cinnamon ice cream greatly outshining the pie.

I was here with a friend and we had such a wonderful time. The tour guide that picks you up and drops you off is very knowledgeable about the state. He was giving us details on so much more than what is in history books. Being a local with deep roots going back hundreds of years really contributed to his execution of facts. I honestly wish we paid to go on another tour of the city with him as a guide. He went above and beyond.

It’s a very peaceful and serene location. Loved hearing about all the history and visualizing how life was back then. The grounds are very well cared for. Azaleas were not in bloom but how gorgeous they would be in the spring! Gift shop not good and restaurant was a bit pricey and except for just a few items it’s mostly a pricey buffet. Still really enjoyed our time there.

The Pineapple Van was very nice, the driver was great! We enjoyed the educational video during the drive. Pick ups were very punctual.
When we arrived at the restaurant at our assigned time, we were told they were behind schedule. We had to wait over 30 minutes.
The meal was NOT as described in Pineapple Tour's advertisement. There were NO shrimp and grits, and much of the food was cold when served off of the buffet. The food was average at best. The waiter at the restaurant as well as the Pineapple Van driver both glossed this over with a laugh and attributed problems to Covid.
The grounds were lovely, the house tour was very good.
If you can provide your own transportation, the tour is worth the admission, but skip the meal. I wouldn't do this again. I would pick a different plantation to tour with a different company.

Our van driver Neal was a wealth of information on not just what to expect on the tour, but on the history, dining and hotels in Charleston. We learned a ton from Neal. He was very personable, enthusiastic, and more than willing to help. The Middleton house/museum tour was steeped in American south history and intrigue but was nearly 100% from the Middleton's perspective and hardly any from the African slave's point of view, the very same African slaves who actually built and ran Middleton Planation in its hay day. I think this is too bad. To the tour's credit, there were some mention and artifacts from before and after the slaves were freed, just not enough and skewed too much to the white Middleton's story.
