We lucked out and had a guide all to our small group, and the tour started off on the right foot - as we were loading into the kayaks, a small group of dolphins was swimming just ahead of us! We pretty much followed them (at a respectable distance) for a large portion of our time on the water, while our guide Ali told us so much about the saltwater marsh, the dolphins and the various birds we saw. It was a bit brisk, but we all had enough layers and were provided with kayak skirts to prevent any water from coming into our kayaks. Ali was very knowledgeable about the whole ecosystem, from the mud to the animals to the grasses and the industries that relied on it all. Wished we could've gone further than we did in the kayaks - it was definitely more of a float around than what I've done in other kayak tours. But it was a beautiful day and we got to see dolphins, so couldn't ask for much more!

My wife and I, along with two other folks who had signed up, were treated to an outstanding kayak tour of the salt marsh, guided by Dallas. Dallas is a local guy, and we couldn't have asked for better company. One moment he was joking with us, and the next moment he was teaching us something we never knew. He took pictures for us. He has a deep knowledge of the area and the ecology of the marsh, and he has a passion for birds (which my wife and I share). He clearly loves being out on the water. We were treated to several dolphin sightings during our tour, but that was just the icing on the cake. It would have been a fantastic trip even without the thrill of seeing those creatures up close. I also can't say enough in praise of Charleston Outdoor Adventures. It is a professional outfit that communicates well and makes sure you come prepared for your time on the tour (water, sunscreen, clothing, footwear, etc.). Neither safety nor the quality of their equipment was ever a question. My wife and I were in a tandem kayak while the other couple each had a single. They take care of getting the craft into and out of the water and make sure you know how to operate it. This tour was a highlight of a 4-day trip to Charleston, and it is definitely something we will do again the next time we are in the area.

We had an excellent time on the kayaks with Leaf, who was a really knowledgable and personable guide (he even passed along great food and reading recs at the end of our trip!) Kayaking with Leaf meant we hit areas of the creek we wouldn't have seen alone, and we learn so much about animals along the waterway. A highlight was kayaking close enough (but not too close!) to see dolphins strand feeding--we wouldn't have found them if the COA team wasn't so communicative and invested in their guests' experience!

Our guide, Ali, was great. She was very sweet and so knowledgeable. Honestly, it was a little boring. When I signed up, I expected to actually kayak a good distance. We did not go very far. Much of our time was spent floating and listening to information. Again, very informative, but not what was expected. I also had high expectations with the dolphins. My thought was they took you to known locations that dolphins frequented. Not the case. You literally went a short distance and then turned around. Clearly my expectations were way off. If you are looking for a very casual, tranquil float through the water, this is perfect for you. The staff are all very friendly. If you want to actually kayak, I would recommend finding another place.

Hi Jennifer, We are sorry to hear that your experience with us did not meet your expectations. As listed in the tour description, our 2 Hour Marsh Kayaking Tour is a leisurely paddle designed to accommodate paddlers of all levels. Each guide chooses their route based on the conditions, and the overall ability level of the group. If you are looking to paddle further, we suggest booking our 3 Hour Marsh Kayaking Tour (designed for paddlers with prior experience) or 4 hour unguided Kayak Rentals. We are lucky enough to have residential dolphins that live in these waters year round. Because of the wild nature of these creatures, we do not guarantee seeing dolphins on any of our tours. Our Morris Island Lighthouse Tour and Dolphin Eco Charter are boat rides that offer the highest chance of seeing this native species. Our staff is happy to discuss our offerings and find an activity that may better fit your needs on your next outing! You can call our office at 843-795-0330.
