My husband and I booked the 10AM historical carriage tour. It was well organized, prompt and the tour guide was very friendly and knew a lot of historical information. It covers many blocks of the city and took around 45 minutes. It was more comfortable than I thought it would be. We were assigned the last row with 2 other people. We learned a lot about the city and thought it was well worth the price of $45 each. They have restrooms and I believe water/snacks at the barn from where you depart. The buggy is pulled up to a stage and you step right on--very easy. Horses seemed to be well taken care of, too.

Best way to really see Charleston while learning the history of the city. We had Jenny as our guide with thirty years of experience in providing this tour. The history that she provides is extremely accurate. Her tour incorporates wit and great storytelling. I was impressed how she also took time to ensure that children on the tour could relate to what she was telling about the history by providing them current day examples. While Martha Lou clearly does not like box trucks, as we learned, there was no question of Jenny's ability to handle any situation. She goes above and beyond knowing the history while also providing interesting extra facts that she takes time to research herself. I would highly recommend taking a tour with Jenny, next time I am back in Charleston, I would like to ride with her again for another tour. Thank you Jenny for an amazing time.

Great day for a carriage ride. Temp in low 70's with peeks of sun and even a light rain for a bit, but that was no issue as we were so enthralled with the old houses and buildings and stories. Our driver was Mark and our horse was Miss Drudge. They both did a great job. Lot of history, some humor and a great pace to see some of the sights. I found it interesting that you don't know what part of this historic city you will see until after you start the ride and you make your first stop and pick up a ball from a machine that tells you. It didn't really matter where we went though, I'm sure we would have enjoyed all of them. Here's my tip for couples though -- if you can swing it, buy the two seats next to you (at a greatly reduced price). You will appreciate the extra room to swing around and see all that is being talked about! Highly recommend this ride. Driver even took us out back to get a picture with our house.

Sadly, because of so many carriages on the streets they randomly assign you a route after you have started the ride. We were assigned a very uninteresting ride that never took us to the waterfront or we’ll known historic streets. The guide struggled to find interesting things to talk about and paused to talk on side streets with very little to look at. I envied groups I saw later in the day going the places I had expected to go on our tour. Would not recommend unless you can be guaranteed a route you would want to see for $100 per couple

This review is not aimed at this company but rather the process! Every carriage is subjected to getting a number but really the city should do itself a favor and get rid of that number 5 ball. Twice I have got this only to go on a tour that takes you nowhere near the famous sights and instead you get to see the jail with tarps over it the housing project and the college! No more tours for me until I can be confident I won’t get that route. I visited here for a month with many out of town guests but avoided this attraction after this experience

We had Andrew as our guide. It was OK, but the drive shaft (or whatever it was called) on the carriage broke and we had to sit and wait quite a while for someone to bring a replacement part. With that we lost some valuable time. Additionally, because Andrew said that the temperature was high (over 94) the city was shutting down all carriage tours. However, after leaving we saw the other 3 companies were continuing their tours. This is not something they can unilaterally decide to do, because the city has to give each carriage its assigned route for each tour.

Except for the nostalgic value of a carriage ride, I would not do any of the carriage tours again because although there are several routes, the city assigns each tour to a specific route. So to get a full tour of the city will requires several carriage tours. I would opt for a bus tour, which covers the entire downtown, or a private carriage tour. You can do a walking tour covering all the major areas on your own, with a detailed book from the Visitor Center or a structured guided walking tour.

$80.00 total included a $5.00 tip to the driver for 2 people. Glad we did it but not really worth it. Our guide was very knowledgeable. We rode around the city and looked at building - I walking tour on our own would have been just as good. Four people shoulder to shoulder in each seat is NOT comfortable especially if you’re stuck beside a very large sweaty smelly woman w/ a wide man spread for her belly. If COVID is a concern don’t do this - too close for comfort! Over all it was fine but should have saved the $80.00 and spent it on amazing food!

The facility is easy to find and appears very well kept. The horses look well cared for. All the staff was friendly and helpful. Our guide was informative and entertaining. The city randomly assigns tour routes which is a limitation for any carriage company in Charleston. We chose the private tour for Covid safety. The guide and all staff we encountered wore their mask appropriately. I was a little disappointed that we only got to drive up and back on the same street (Meeting St for route 2A) but our guide did her best to add in a lot of information on the area and this route did include some impressive homes. This is a pricey option to see such a small area but we did enjoy the experience of the carriage ride.

The educational experience you get from a carriage ride in Charleston is far better than reading about Charleston's history in one of the many books available. There is nothing like seeing and hearing about what happened on the site, or what purpose architecture played in the growth and survival of the city. It all comes to life when the knowledgeable and experienced carriage guides start telling their stories.
This was the 18th Palmetto Carriage Works tour of Charleston that I've taken. Each one was different; each one was fun and memorable. My visiting guests and family are always impressed with the history of Charleston, the manner in which the tour is conducted, and the humane care and safety of the horses and mules that work the city streets.
For me, the biggest bang for your buck is best received from the folks and Palmetto Carriage Works in the Big Red Barn. They are friendly, helpful and know their business extremely well.

My horse was named Bud
I believe my tour guide's name was Scott.

I don't know was more amazing Bud or Scott. Bud and Scott have both worked with each other for a number of years and had a friendship bond that was unbreakable. It was almost as if they were both able to read each other's minds. I have been on several other carriage rides before but never with a horse who was so professional. Outstanding job Bud. Now on to Scott, He was incredible. Not only did his wealth of information about the city was astonishing us, but he was able to point out places of interest on our tour that either he or his family was immediately connected to. He wasn't just our history guide he was tied to the history that he was guiding us through. He truly had a passion for his job. In my personal opinion, the next time I'm in Charleston, I am going to contact the company and schedule a private tour with Scott and Bud, Because as far as I am concerned they are the only 2 that should be giving tours of the setting.

Management: Please do everything in your power to keep Scott happy and employed with your company. He is truly a star. I have worked at Disney for the last 10 years and I know good customer service. Not only is Scott focused on safety, courtesy, efficiency, and show, He is quite passionate about what he does. It is in my strong opinion that I advise you to increase his pay raise, you don't want to lose an employee like him.
