Overview
Join us for a behind-the-scenes tour of the Old Charleston City Jail, which housed some of Charleston’s most infamous criminals, 19th-century pirates, and Civil War prisoners. The Old City Jail was in operation from 1802 until 1939, and most of the building’s original structures like the cells and warden’s quarters still remain intact.
Highlights
  • Explore the Old Charleston Jail at night—one of the only night tours offered
  • Get the historical rundown starting at the day the jail was built in 1802
  • Hear about ghosts that supposedly haunt the halls from your guide
  • Choose from multiple tour times to best fit your schedule
What to Expect
Meet for this guided tour at the Old Charleston City Jail, and get ready to explore its haunted jail cells. Since it will be nighttime, prepare to get even more spooked. As you walk the hallways, your guide will tell you all about the city’s most famous criminals who lived and died there. You’ll enter the actual cells that held notorious prisoners, such as Lavinia and John Fisher. See if you can catch sight of Lavinia’s ghost, who has been said to still haunt the halls. Some tourgoers have claimed they’ve seen objects move on their own. Your tour ends back at the entrance of the prison with plenty of time to go out afterward to recover from your eerie adventure.

I really enjoyed our tour guide, Brian. He had a great way of setting up the scene and giving us a great spooky story. I didn't enjoy people taking an obscene amount of flash photos in my face and not having enough self awareness to let Brian finish a story without interrupting

Orianna, we're sorry about the flash photography and the rudeness of other guests. We're following up with some additional protocols to avoid such distractions on future tours. Please contact Randy Johnson, our Guide Manager, at randall@bulldogtours.com, to discuss ways we can make this right. Huge thanks for taking the time to give us this feedback. It helps us tremendously.

Jack was our tour guide and a great story teller. It was interesting to hear about the grim history of the jail. I did not have any encounters but did not expect any. Overall a fun experience.

I’m a huge horror/ghost story buff and this place certainly did not disappoint, especially after dark. The history behind the jail is tragic and macabre. Our tour guide, Joy, is a great story teller and definitely has passion about the tales she weaves. If I’m ever back in the
