- kindlystevo0 contributionsA great findJanet did wonderfully in explaining history and keeping the juniors and seniors interested in her stories. She is knowledgeable, relational and it would seem that everyone in town loves her. I rate this tour 2 thumbs up!Written April 9, 2021
- kywarbler0 contributionsLearning History Has Never Been This FunI kicked off the new year by spending a week enjoying the Low Country delights of Beaufort. The hands-down highlight of the trip was the two hours I spent seeing the community through Janet's eyes and imagination. As others have noted, her enthusiasm for her southern home is captivating. But that word doesn't adequately describe her wit, warmth, and charm, and it doesn't come anywhere near the same zip code in terms of describing her teaching talents. If you've signed up for these sorts of tours before and came away from those experiences feeling sedated by a mind-numbing recitation of dates and names, then it's time for you to hit the reset button and give Janet's tour a try. You'll hear fascinating stories about people and events spanning nearly 450 years of history, talk about movies, writers, food, inventions, and architecture, and find yourself sampling strange fruit from backyard trees and marveling over panoramic marshes and wispy mosses swaying in the tree tops. Learning history has never been this fun.Written January 11, 2020
- jacob p0 contributionswonderful personality....time well spentusually not into tours. However, Janet has a style that enhances the opportunity to learn, appreciate history, and reflect on where we have been and how we got where we are. Janet has a free flowing easy to embrace approach to story telling, and tying together events that shaped Beaufort and the South. One would be well advised to contact Janet and arrange a walking tour.... by the way, make sure to include The Chocolate Tree shop...really good!!Written November 16, 2019
- MeganM6780 contributionsFabulous Tour!I brought a group of guests over via boat from Hilton Head Island and they were able to enjoy a fabulous history tour from Miss Janet! - Peter K0 contributionsFun, enjoyable and informative tourWe did a walking tour with Janet on 5/18/19. There were two other people on the tour so it was a nice small group. The tour took over 2 hours and we walked about 2.5 miles. Janet was informative and engaging. She had recommendations for lunch and dinner spots and seemed to know everyone in town. The tour included a number of historic houses as well as the houses used in the Big Chill and original Prince of Tides movies. It was fun and we'd recommend the tour.Written June 12, 2019

Was not only vastly interesting to be on the walking tour, but Janet provided anecdotes, took questions, and was a lot of fun to boot! We had a wonderful time with her and our group and learned a lot about Beaufort’s citizens and history. Janet is extremely knowledgeable and was able to place the history and many of the buildings in context relative to events across the South and within important historical events. Our time flew by. It was a perfect way to spend our mid day.Written May 16, 2019
- kmbreakall0 contributionsLoved It!I love doing walking tours and Janet did an amazing job. She knows her history, has a fun personality and made sure a young child on the tour got a couple of needed breaks. When it started to rain she took us into her church to wait it out and continued to share historical facts. I loved Beaufort and the city came alive through Janet's tour. It was much more informative than the horse and carriage tour I did the day before. Highly Recommend if you are visiting Beaufort that you do Janet;s Walking Tour.Written May 13, 2019

This tour was highly recommended by close friends visiting in the Hilton Head area. Janet is very knowledgeable and informative of the history and people of Beaufort. Her presentation is entertaining and enthusiastic. Using maps to show historical occurrences starting nearly 500 years ago, the events are nearly brought to life in a way that you can almost imagine being there.
Most everybody we walked past during the 2+ hour tour bade a cheery hello to Janet with a welcoming smile on their face. Our group was welcome to walk into private yards to admire gardens and even taste kumquats picked right from the tree - consumed it it’s entirety! Yummy!
We entered the Rhett House to be introduced to some of the unique architecture of the period as well as see the house layout and furniture.
For Hollywood film buffs, nearly 20 films have been shot in Beaufort, Janet can point out the many specific locations associated with the films and actors/actresses. The anecdote relating to Barbara Streisand vs the military flyovers from the nearby base was especially interesting.
As reported in other reviews, Janet possesses a wealth of knowledge relating to local restaurants.

Our first visit to Beaufort, and Janet's tour was the highlight! My husband and I decided to book it to learn a bit about the town, but we got much more than we bargained for! Janet not only shared history of Beaufort, it's buildings, and it's people but also fun stories and history of the surrounding areas and the state! Her passion and enthusiasm made it all the more enjoyable. We HIGHLY recommend this tour to anyone who wants to learn about Beaufort's history in a fun, engaging way.

Janet had great knowledge of the history of Beaufort as well as the current going's on and locations of movies that have been filmed in Beaufort. The walk goes through the historic sections of the city surrounding Bay Street,. The homes are beautiful and Janet has stories and history for all of them. We enjoyed our 2 plus hours walking through the Spanish Moss draped Oaks and past beautiful gardens. We will be back to delve more into the history of Beaufort.

Janet’s tour was one of our highlights during our vacation. If possible, take her tour on the front end of your trip so you can enjoy Beaufort deeply throughout the rest of your stay. Janet was kind, intelligent, and SO FUN! She knew all the names of our group members, made everyone feel like fast friends, and led us on a wonderful, jaw dropping tour of the city. We can not recommend Janet’s tour enough - it is a must do when visiting Beaufort!!!!

Janet walked us through the historic area of Beaufort on St Patrick's Day. She was an engaging tour guide who was quick to point out the best vantage points for a photo and kept us captivated with many stories about Beaufort. We learned a lot about Beaufort's history as well as interesting tidbits about the movies made in Beaufort, the architecture as well as the gardens. A wonderful way to spend the morning!

Janet took us on a tour early in the morning on probably the coldest, windiest day we were there, but she was smiling and ready to go with blankets and headsets, as she took us on a golf cart tour instead of the walking tour. Probably one of the nicest, most knowledgeable folks we met there. She took time to give us some history before we even left the parking lot; we went up and down streets and she gave us history on more homes than we could count! She gave us time to ask questions and checked often to make sure we weren't cold. We went all over town and really enjoyed seeing so many places we normally would have missed searching on our own. She is a true gem for the area and we highly recommend her tour! I always think it's important to learn about the areas you visit, but this particular town is loaded with history so don't miss this opportunity to learn from one of the best!

A friend who recently visited suggested I join Janet's tour and it was just as fun as they described. Lively recitations of pertinent and fun facts about the homes, churches, families, geography and military and economic history of Beaufort and surrounding area. I learned a few things that I had not known, despite being an American History teacher! Entrance to homes and churches included.

Great tour! We had friends visiting from Pennsylvania and decided to do a walking tour of Beaufort. Janet is a wonderful tour guide. Knowledgeable (who knew Beaufort had this much history?), friendly, entertaining, and high energy. She even throws in details on the many movies that were filmed here I’m Beaufort. If you can walk/stand for 1.5 - 2.00 hours I highly recommend booking Janet for a tour. You won’t regret it and you’ll be sure to learn a little about this little gem of a South Carolina town.

What a great tour!! Janice had a great sense of humor, was very personable, had a great delivery and was extremely knowledgeable. There have been times on tours that I've wondered if the information that the tour guides have given is really accurate, but not with Janet, she sites places that she has researched information. I wholeheartedly recommend this tour with Janet, you won't be sorry.
