- 650davidaf00Beautiful Beaufort Boat and Bus toursWe learned so much on both of these tours! Please take a day (or two) to take both of the tours. First of all - make note that if you book these tours and decide to do them on the same day, the boat tour would be first at 11AM Eastern time and the bus tour will be at 2 PM, which means that you have time to walk some place to get lunch and come back for the second tour. Now, with that said, the boat tour not only gives you information on the ecosystem of the area (yes, you'll probably see some birds and dolphins), but also delves into some historical information of the area, from the Native Americans who inhabited the area to the Europeans who tried and ultimately succeeded in colonizing the area and to the enslaved people who were brought to the area by the colonizers and what happened here during the Civil War. The bus tour, with Dean as tour guide, provided more in depth information. He is a wonderful storyteller should probably be an actor. Without giving anything away, he discussed life in Beaufort during the antebellum period, during the Civil War, Reconstruction and the Civil Rights movement 100 years later. Beaufort and the Sea Islands have done a really good job of preserving their historical homes and buildings so you can actually see the places being discussed and makes their place in history more tangible. Beaufort's history is American history.
- Rstolburg00A great little town to visit.Loved the atmosphere. Love the homes. Main Street have very unique stores. People very friendly and parking was great as well.
- alanhJ2225EU00Anniversary weekend tourThe boat ride was really great. Some history in with fun. The captain was really good at maneuvering near the dolphins and even though the weather was gloomy the atmosphere on the boat was not. We highly recommend Gray Lines tours!
- Jane K00Lots of history and knowledgeable guide!Dean was extremely knowledgeable and provided interesting information about the rapid changes which took place in the area after the civil war!
- 573jodik00Falsely AdvertisedDo not book! The reservation was for a tours at 3pm but the boat only goes out at 11am. We were notified that we wouldn’t be able to take the boat tour on the same day as our bus tour. We were unable to move the tour to the same day and not refunded - falsely advertised.
- Lathamny00Wonderful ExperienceOur tour guide was amazing. HIs knowledge about how reconstruction started in Beaufort and the impact it had on this country was impressive. He obviously spent a considerable amount of time researching the subject. He willingly answered all our questions. He encouraged us to spend some time getting more details about the things that he introduced. We highly recommend this tour.
- Kerri W00Lame Boat Tour/Informative Bus TourThe boat tour was kinda null and void. The staff seemed a bit unknowledgeable about the area. They mostly chatted about birds and oysters. We didn’t go as far as they said we initially would on the boat tour. Being a history buff, of the few actual historical facts about Beaufort that were shared, I found half of them to be inaccurate. On the way back, it’s basically speeding in a small boat. Make sure to wear a rain jacket, because if you’re riding in the back on the left side, you’ll get wet. The bus tour was better. Our tour guide, Heather, was very energetic and knowledgeable. She had some witty quips interjected into her blurbs about different historical facts about Beaufort. The tour went over about 30 minutes, but no one seemed to mind. I do recommend the bus tour with Kelly tours.
- kluck_1000The Beaufort Historical Tour with Kelly wad one of THE BEST city tours my husband and I have been on in any of our traveFavorite part of the tour was having Kelly as our tour guide...knowledgeable, great sense of humor, attentive to her customers! We learned SO much about the people abd the city of Beaufort! Excellent!!
- jamfan3800Absolutely first-rate and knowledgeable Gullah Geechee tour, by LillieThis tour was one of the hallmarks of our week's stay in Beaufort. Lillie, a lifelong resident from the Frogmore area of the Sea Islands and a retired local school teacher, brought so much of her family's and neighbors' history, culture, lifestyle and language to life. While a three-hour tour, it passed by so quickly, in part because of the energy and heart that Lillie brings to her talks. Between St. Helena and Lady's Islands, the Penn Center, the Brick Church, and Coffin Point and its praise house, we covered centuries of history and life. Lillie's skills as a superb teacher are amply on display; she truly brings to life so much of her community's life and times, both the highs and lows. Lovely and poignant. I'd highly, highly recommend this tour, and make sure that you ask for Lillie when you book this.
- P4659CPcarolb00DisappointingThis tour said nothing about Gullah. I truly enjoyed the Penn Center. We dud a lot of driving around the area, but dud nit relate to the toyr name. I was very disappointed.
- 199emmah00Lillie’s Grand TourThis 3-hour tour of St. Helena Island was an excellent experience for my husband and me. We were on a small bus which could have seated about 12 people, but on the day we went, December 21, there were just 4 people aboard, so we were really able to engage with our guide. Lillie was delightful. She grew up on St.Helena, as did her parents and grandparents, tracing her heritage back to pre-Civil War. She really knew the island culture and shared many bits of personal experience which made us feel that we were getting far more than 3 hours worth of understanding of the local history. This tour greatly exceeded our expectations and we give all the credit to Lillie.
- Principal200Do this tour if you’re in BeaufortWe took the Gullah tour, and it was a delight. Lily Harris was our guide and we spent the morning leaving about her life, traditions, and culture of the area. We made several stops visiting the Penn Center, Chapel of Ease, and a Praise house which added so much to learning about the culture enslaved people. An unexpected bonus was meeting the only person on St. Helena Island who continues to make Sweetgrass baskets. Tour was well worth the price!
- Karen B00Evelene is great!Evelene Stevenson is a wonderful tour guide! She sings and dances and knows everything about Beaufort, SC and the Gullah people. Loved my tour with her!
- ALEC B00'Reconstruction Era' history tour of the South Carolina low country. My favorite part was just listening to the guides tremendous wealth of knowledge of the low country during the 'Reconstruction Era'. I highly recommend this tour, if you are in the Beaufort or surrounding area.
- Cmatth202200Great History Tour Beaufort, SCThe Old Beaufort Heritage Tour was great! It was better than great. Our driver/tour guide Evelene Stevenson was so knowledgeable and really gave an excellent history lesson. Gullah/Geechee! Coffin Point Praise House was one of the best features of the tour. Evelene thank you!

We chose this tour because it had positive reviews and also provided the option of seeing the city in the comfort of a minibus. This was especially appreciated while there on June 11, when it was 93 degrees! Unfortunately, I cannot remember our tour guide's name, but he was an excellent historian and very enthusiastic! We learned so much about the history of the area and so much about the importance of the city during the civil war. There are a number of city tours to choose from, but I would definitely recommend this tour!

Our guide Heather was an exceptional historian. She was full of passion for the city and her perspectives on the history from the Union, Confederate, and slaves was truly enlightening. Her mix of history and humor was enjoyable. Thank you Heather! Learning so much about Beaufort's role for the Union on the Civil War.

My wife and I have taken guided tours all over the world to get the most out of any location we have visited. This was by far the best tour we have ever experienced. We visited Beaufort many years ago and took one of the carriage tours, but got nothing close to what we received from this bus tour. The young lady giving the tour was incredibly knowledgeable, very articulate and really “ into it”. We left with not only so much more knowledge of Beaufort’s past, but a deep understanding of the city’s importance in our country’s complex history. Her presentation of the story of Robert Smalls was inspiring, something else we never expected. The visit to the National Cemetery ( not included in our previous carriage tour) and the wonderful guide’s presentation there had me moved to tears. We would strongly recommend this tour be on the “ not to miss” list.

The tour was very well organized and informative. The tour guide was well versed in the history and provided context for how the Spanish, French and English settlers started, the colonial period and into right into antebellum society. Great knowledge of the mansions and their owners as we toured the historical district and the memorial parks, The motorcoach was clean, air conditioned and the right size to navigate the city. I would definitely recommend this tour and the guide, Everline

This was the best bus tour I have ever been on. Of course the Beaufort area was noteworthy, but the tour guide was outstanding! I did not get her name, but she was very outgoing and told the best stories about the history of the area and the film making experiences. Many details were shared about the different architecture styles, the history of the building materials, and extensive knowledge of the National Cemetary. Although you can't expect this every time, but the tour went an extra half hour as she regaled us with interesting facts (or so she claimed) 😊

Heather was my tour guide. She was phenomenal! She was so knowledgeable about the area. I learned so much that I could not stop talking about everything I had learned that day when I got home. I highly recommend this to anyone wanting to learn about the city and its history. I would give it a 6 if I could!

Oh my goodness! This is by far the best tour we've ever experienced. Our tour guide and driver, Dean, was superb! He dressed the part in Civil War garb, relayed the details of the multitude landmarks and historical events along the course of the tour, and the many questions throw his way were answered with obvious knowledge and authority. His passion for the area and its history was blatantly evident. He even regaled us with a song or two! If you're in Beaufort, this is definitely a worthy activity! Highly, highly recommended.

It was a chilly morning when we took the 10:00 minibus. We were met by our guide who was dressed in a blue military uniform. I don't know if he was a retired historian/academic or an actor. He could have been both. He quoted from several historical sources--documents and speeches. He was eloquent and the presentations were dramatic and moving. We want to go back and take the tour again.

It goes down Bay Street but then it weaves back and forth on the streets behind Bay Street all the way back to the National Cemetery. It is totally worth the price! I got to see a lot the neighborhoods. Great tour!

Hello - sorry for the delayed response - just saw the question now. The tour does not offer any house tours. We toured the Verdier house which is the only house available for tours since all other houses are privately owned.

Is there any walking involved in the tour? One of the travelers in our group has difficulty walking for extended periods. Thanks!

The only walking is getting from the parking lot to the tour van, however, a person can be dropped at the tour van area and the passenger car driver can proceed to park and rejoin at the van stop. No part of the actual tour involves walking, it is all by van.
