We went to a two-day surf camp for beginners, which was great! Tam was super helpful in accommodating our schedule and also helping us arrange other excursions around Byron Bay! Thanks to the great instructors, we manage to stand up on the board for some good waves, and we surfed at the world-famous The Pass, alongside dolphins and whales! Same school for the next time in Byron!

I cannot recommend Blackdog surf school enough! Tam, who works in the office, was so kind and friendly, flexible and so helpful. This was my first time surfing and instructors KJ and Luca were really patient, kind and generous with their knowledge, and they made the whole experience so fun and relaxed. I will definitely come back! Thank you so much.

Both instructors were really helpful and supportive. The lesson was really fun and perfect for beginners. It felt like the staff was invested in your progress and constantly cheering you on. It was easy to learn in this environment. 10/10 recommend.

This is the only place you should rent a board from in Byron Bay. Amazing deal, amazing people, amazing selection of boards. They will treat you like family!!

It was amazing, the instructors made it feel like a family while also helping you and giving you tips.

I took a group of young Aboriginal teens for their first-time experience, and they all had the best time and enjoyed every minute. Every kid had a smile on their face and said they had so much fun and said they would continue surfing, one of my youths said that he felt so peaceful on the water and the environment our children come from in Sydney is chaotic so to hear that he felt that feeling made the day better. So thankful for the Black Dog surf teachers showing our kids what a great skill to have and what a difference surfing can do for your mental health.

We attended the 2 day Master the Whitewash package at Blackdog Surf School and had the best experience. Tammy took great care of us, giving us advance notice of our lesson times and making sure we have the right equipment. We had two different instructors who were both great at explaining the basics. Everyone was able to stand on the board at the end of the session. We liked that the course also included stretching, theory around waves and how to behave amongst other surfers.

Personally I found this lesson to be a waste of money. Before we got in the water we were taught the process of surfing, which was fine. However once we got into the water the teaching was completely non-existent. It was really difficult to get out to the instructors (so that they could push us into the waves) due to the tide, which is obviously not their fault, but they kept moving away from us and also completely ignoring us, even at a metre away. We would all be within an arms length and they just couldn't be bothered to grab and guide our boards. When they would eventually grab us, they would just snap at us to get on the board and push us away, not watching to help us improve. I got no guidance whatsoever. They were impatient and unhelpful, and I was a complete beginner so it was really disheartening. Eventually I gave up with the lesson and started catching waves alone, nearer the shore, where I had much more success. They didn't notice that I wasn't going out to them anymore. The people who I was with from my hostel noticed the same things, and I think that we would have been better off just hiring a board and working it out for ourselves.

Super friendly, encouraging, engaging and knowledgeable staff! Surfing is hard. Make sure to get two lessons if you haven’t done it before, and don’t be discouraged if you don’t get the hang of it the first day!

Knowledge two teachers in a good mood! Weather was not perfect but that is nothing the teachers can influence. I am glad we surfed anyway as it was a beginners lesson.

Had a fantastic afternoon with blackdog surf school, friendly team who make the experience fun. We have never surfed before and were able to catch some great waves with a great instructor who helped throughout. Would highly recommend and would visit again. The only feedback I would give, it would be really cool to have a photographer ti help catch the moments!

my husband and i have both only surfed a couple times before, but we had the best day with black dog surf school! kristy was a very experienced and kind instructor who personalized the experience for multiple levels, and tam in the front office was very accommodating. we had great weather too.
